Pritchard concluded their annual league competition this past Saturday with a new champion registering in history books of the league – the AYFS
Bears from Pago Pago under the management of
Head Coach Sa Suluai, clinched the Championship title after defeating Head Coach Shawn Togia
and his army of Steelers.
Throughout previous years, the AYFS Bears
had shown a lot of potential in making it to the
championship game, but were never able to pull
through the playoffs – this year, they were the
No.1 seed of the league, sitting comfortably with
an undefeated record, and taking the championship trophy last Saturday, after a 20 - 16 victory
against the Steelers.
The first half of their game started out with the
Steelers attacking the Bears’ offensive unit vigorously, who in turn had a hard time driving against
Luzonric Norman Heather and his defensive unit.
It wasn’t until the offensive player of the game,
Malala Jr. “Beastmode” dove into the end zone
for the first touchdown of the game that the Bears’
momentum became rock steady.
Into halftime, the Bears were at a comfortable
20 - 0 lead. But not long after the start of the third
quarter, offensive player of the game AJ Talafu
powered his way into the end zone for a quarterback
sneak to score the Steelers first touchdown of the
game. Their two-point conversion in the hands of
Talafu again brought hope back to the steel curtain.
The remainder of the second half had the Bears
nervously at the edge of their seats, as they watched
the Steelers coming back in the second half of the
match to trail them only by 4 points — 20 - 16.
However, in the final quarter of the game a call
from Head Official Mike White stating a fumble
from the Steelers offense inside Bears territory
stopped the Steelers hope of a winning comeback.
That call threw off the Steelers momentum,
gave the ball to the Bears offensive unit, who were
already knowledgeable on the time situation for the
match, and ended the game quickly with a knee to
all four downs of their final series to officially win
themselves the 2015 AYFS Championship title.

ASBA FLAG DAY LEAGUE
The American Samoa Basketball Association (ASBA) that has worked with many of the
ASHSAA basketball players throughout the
year, is calling out to any teams that would like
to register for the ASBA Flag Day League. The
ASBA stated that the deadline for registration
is tomorrow, Thursday, March 12 — for both
men’s and women’s teams.
Their meeting for teams will be Thursday at
the American Samoa National Olympic Office
(ASNOC) office at the Sports Complex Veterans
Memorial Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m. The
League will start this coming Saturday March 14
at the Tafuna High School gymnasium starting at
12:00 p.m. as they invite the public out to witness
some of the best basketball players in the territory in action. For more information, you can call

GIRLS BASKETBALL BEGINS
The ASHSAA Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity teams have taken to the courts with their
season starting this week. The Warriors will be
out trying to stay on top of the standings in the
Varsity division, as the Fa’asao Marist Cougars
will be attempting to the same thing in the Junior
Varsity division.

Big trades steal
spotlight from
NFL free agents
NEW YORK (AP) — Until the New York Jets landed Darrelle
Revis, the first hours of NFL free agency Tuesday looked more
like fantasy football.
Trades, anyone?
Monster deals sending Jimmy Graham to Seattle and Sam
Bradford to Philadelphia stole the spotlight from free agent signings. That is until mid-evening, when Revis Island returned to the
Meadowlands.
The Jets dug into their past to bring back the All-Pro cornerback, according to his agents. Revis goes from the Jets’ archrival
Patriots, who he helped win the Super Bowl last month, to his NFL
roots. The deal is for five years and $70 million, with $39 million
guaranteed.
New Orleans agreed to send its star tight end to the Seahawks
for center Max Unger, with draft picks changing hands. The Saints
are to get a first-round pick, while Seattle receives a fourth-rounder.
That stunner was followed by Bradford, the injury-prone quarterback who barely has played the past two years (knee), going to
Philadelphia for Nick Foles, who also comes off an injury-shortened season (collarbone) and is headed to St. Louis. Bradford was
the top overall draft pick in 2010.
Foles is the latest starter to depart Philadelphia. He joins twotime All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, now in Buffalo, and
Pro Bowl wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, headed for Kansas City,
in going elsewhere.
Philadelphia also added Seahawks starting cornerback Byron
Maxwell as a free agent with a six-year deal. And Seattle brought
in cornerback Cary Williams, formerly of the Eagles and a 2012
Super Bowl winner with the Ravens.
Baltimore dealt nose tackle Haloti Ngata to Detroit, which is
about to lose All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free
agency. Ngata, 31 and a five-time Pro Bowler, is due $8.5 million
next season and has a $16 million salary cap figure.
The Bills confirmed acquiring McCoy for linebacker Kiko
Alonso; McCoy also signed a contract extension for $40 million
over five years.
The Jets also confirmed a previously agreed upon trade, getting receiver Brandon Marshall from Chicago for a fifth-round
draft pick. The Jets released WR-KR Percy Harvin, whom they
acquired last season from Seattle.
Carolina released DeAngelo Williams, its career rushing leader.
Two retirements also drew attention away from the chase for
free agents. Five-time All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis, the heart
of San Francisco’s defense for eight seasons, called it quits. The
2007 Defensive Rookie of the Year is leaving because of recurrent
toe and feet injuries.
“In my head, I’m already a Hall of Famer,” Willis said. “I am
leaving this with closure, saying that I am happy today, more
happy today than I was the day I was drafted. That says something
to me.”
Tennessee quarterback Jake Locker, his four-year pro career
ravaged by injuries, also retired, saying he has no “burning desire”
to keep playing.
The 49ers lost another mainstay when running back Frank
Gore, their career rushing leader, joined the Colts.
Linebacker A.J. Hawk, who grew up in Ohio and attended
Ohio State, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on a two-year deal.
Hawk spent his first nine seasons in Green Bay.
Jacksonville, with lots of salary cap room, grabbed tight end
Julius Thomas away from Denver among a slew of moves. The
Jaguars agreed to deals with defensive end Jared Odrick, right
tackle Jermey Parnell, cornerback Davon House, linebacker Dan
Skuta and safety Sergio Brown.
Thomas agreed on a five-year deal worth $46 million, with $24
million guaranteed.
Arizona got probably the best run blocker in this year’s group,
guard Mike Iupati, who agreed on a five-year, $40 million contract
with $22.5 million guaranteed. The 6-foot-5, 331-pound lineman
played five seasons with San Francisco, is a three-time Pro Bowl
player and made the All-Pro team in 2012.
Arizona also re-signed linebacker LaMarr Woodley.
The Falcons fortified the middle of new coach Dan Quinn’s
defense by signing free-agent linebackers Brooks Reed and Justin
Durant.
Among other official free agency moves early in the process
were LB Malcolm Smith, the 2014 Super Bowl MVP with Seattle,
who agreed to terms with Oakland; DE Kendall Langford to Indianapolis; WR Brian Hartline to Cleveland; S Tyvon Branch to
Kansas City; TE Owen Daniels to Denver; G Orlando Franklin
to San Diego; CB Buster Skrine to the Jets; FB Jerome Felton to
Buffalo; and QB Shaun Hill to Minnesota, which also re-signed
RB Matt Asiata.

The sport of handball has been spreading like wildfire across the territory into the elementary
schools, high school and villages, thanks to the hard work of the American Samoa Handball Association (ASHA) and the Department of Education (DOE) Physical Education (PE) program. The ASHA
donated ten soft and eight regulation handballs to Lauli’i Elementary for levels K through 2nd grade
recently as part of their partnership with the DOE/PE program.
“These are the perfect balls for levels K through 2, because they are very soft and durable,”
said head of the ASHA Carl Sagapolutele Floor. “We believe in starting with young children, in
learning the game. I’m donating to the schools that have teachers that show the most interest in maintaining their PE program,” explained Floor. So far, he has donated the balls to Leone a and Lauli’i
Elementary.
He explained that he received the balls after they (ASHA/DOE-PE) completed their Aunu’u program and they will be going back to Aunu’u sometime soon. ASHA, along with the DOE-PE program, now services 11 elementary schools and four high schools.
This coming Saturday at Onesosopo Park starting at 9:00 a.m. will be the first of three handball
games between East side teams, South Shore Sports Club Under-15 Girls and Boys A and B teams
with the winner playing against the Leone Handball Club for the championship on June 4 at the
Sports Complex Veterans Memorial Stadium. Also on June 4, there will be the Under-19 Men’s and
Women’s handball championships between the Caboom Athletic Club and the CC Handball Club.
“The invitation is always open to any young athlete out there to come out and train with us if they
wish to learn this exciting game of handball and be part of the team,” he said. The ASHA practices at
the stadium Monday through Friday starting at 4:00 p.m. For more information on the ASHA you can

Planned UCLA basketball
training facility gets funding
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA’s planned basketball training
and performance facility that will house the school’s men’s and
women’s basketball programs will be named for Mo Ostin, the
music executive who has committed $10 million to the project.
Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced Ostin’s involvement
on Tuesday. The building will be located near Pauley Pavilion at
the south end of the Los Angeles Tennis Center. It will include
locker rooms, training areas, a strength and conditioning facility,
coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms and video rooms.
Ostin earned a bachelor’s in economics from UCLA and is
chairman emeritus of Warner Bros. Records. He worked with
Frank Sinatra, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young,
James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, Madonna, Prince and Red Hot
Chili Peppers during his career. Ostin was inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. He spent 32 years at Warner Bros.
and later worked in music for DreamWorks SKG.
A year ago, UCLA announced plans to raise private funds for
the project and has received $15 million in cash and pledges so
far. The project, estimated to cost between $30 million and $40
million, is set to break ground this fall.
Messi, Aguero and Higuain picked for
Argentina squad for matches in U.S.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina coach Gerardo
Martino has named Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo
Higuain in a squad to face El Salvador and Ecuador in international friendlies later this month in the United States. Martino
announced the 22-player squad on Tuesday, and included a firsttime call up for Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Forward Carlos Tevez was also called up. Martino recalled
Tevez late last year after he had been omitted for three years under
former coach Alejandro Sabella.
Defender Martin Demichelis of Manchester City, a starter for
Argentina in last year’s World Cup, was left out of the squad. Martino is likely to add several Argentina-based players next week.
Argentina faces El Salvador on March 28 in Washington, and
then plays Ecuador March 31 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

NEW YORK (AP) — Grigor Dimitrov beat 17-time Grand Slam
champion Roger Federer in an exhibition match at Madison Square
Garden on Tuesday night in a confidence-building victory for the
younger player. Dimitrov won 6-2, 1-6, 7-5, rallying from a break
down in the final set. The 23-year-old Bulgarian is 0-3 in official
matches against Federer, who’s nearly a decade older. Dimitrov
broke Federer’s serve in the final game to clinch the match.
Earlier, Gabriela Sabatini, 44, beat Monica Seles, 41, in a pro set
8-5. Both have rarely played since retiring, but they decided it was
worth training to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their classic
five-set 1990 WTA Finals match at the Garden, won by Seles.
Lakers sign guard Jabari
Brown to 10-day contract
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have
signed guard Jabari Brown to a 10-day contract.
Brown was called up from the D-Fenders, the Lakers’ D-League
team. He led the league with 24.4 points, along with 4.1 rebounds
and 2.2 assists in 39 games. Brown was a college teammate of current Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson at Missouri last season. Brown
left early for the NBA draft, and later signed with the Lakers for
training camp last season. The Lakers’ roster is at 16 after being
granted a hardship waiver exception from the NBA.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) — The Grand Slam
of Golf is moving to Trump National in suburban Los Angeles this
fall. The multi-year agreement between the PGA of America and
the Trump Organization was announced Tuesday.
The event will be played Oct. 19-21 in its return to the U.S.
mainland for the first time since 1993. It features the winners of
golf’s four majors: the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA
Championship. Trump National, whose owner Donald Trump
attended the announcement, features a 7,242-yard, par-71 layout
with lakes, massive bunkers, waterfalls and scenic views.
Golf Channel will air the event. The course also will host the
PGA Junior League championship on Oct. 17-19.
Dunn, Pointer share Big East
Defensive Player of the Year
NEW YORK (AP) — Providence’s Kris Dunn and St. John’s
Sir’Dominic Pointer shared the Big East’s Defensive Player of
Year award. Pointer, a senior forward, was also selected as the conference’s Most Improved Player in a vote of the league’s coaches.
Dunn, a sophomore guard, is the first player in Big East history
to lead the league in steals and assists in the same season.
Pointer was third in the league in steals and blocked shots and
his 7.6 rebounds ranks fourth. Pointer increased his scoring average
this season from 5.9 to 13.7 and his rebound average went up from
3.2 to 7.6 while his field goal percentage jumped from .438 to .526.
Josh Hart of Villanova was chosen the Sixth Man of the Year
while Alex Barlow of Butler was selected for the Sportsmanship
Award.

a five-year deal
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals and free agent
guard Mike Iupati have agreed on a five-year, $40 million contract
with $22.5 million guaranteed, a person familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. The person asked not to be identified because
the deal has not officially been announced. Announcement of the
agreement is pending a physical, which is planned on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-5, 331-pound lineman has played all five of his NFL
seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He is a three-time Pro Bowl
player and made the All-Pro team in 2012.
Iupati is considered one of the best run blockers in the NFL and
he joins a team that was last in rushing last season.
Iupati’s deal is richer than the five-year, $35 million contract
— with $17 million guaranteed — that left tackle Jared Veldheer
signed with Arizona a year ago.
The two deals mean the Cardinals are certain to owe $39.5 million to the two players on the left side of their line.
Iupati has played left guard throughout his career and is expected
to play that position in Arizona. That would mean the Cardinals
could move Jonathan Cooper, Arizona’s first-round draft pick in
2013, from left to right guard. Cooper missed his rookie season
with a broken leg and was slow to come back last season.
Among other things, the Cardinals are looking for a power back
either in free agency or the draft. Andre Ellington is not that style
of runner and was bothered by a foot injury throughout last season.
Iupati, from American Samoa, was the 17th pick overall in the
2010 draft out of Idaho. He was lightly recruited as a high school
player in Anaheim, California, but developed into one of the best
linemen in college football at the time.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Cardinals announced the signing
of inside linebacker LaMarr Woodley to a one-year contract.
Woodley played seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and
was with the Oakland Raiders last year. He played six games last
season, five as a starter, before a biceps injury ended his season.
The Raiders released him in February.
Defensive end Cory Redding, a 12-year NFL veteran, said in a
tweet that he would be visiting the Cardinals on Wednesday.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The mother of the South African
woman killed by athlete Oscar Pistorius said on Tuesday that
she does not care about an upcoming appeal, even if it leads to a
harsher sentence for the Paralympic medalist.
“How is it going to help me?” June Steenkamp, the mother of
Pistorius’ slain girlfriend asked.
Pistorius’ lawyers will later this week challenge a judge’s
decision to allow prosecutors to appeal the runner’s negligent
killing conviction for shooting Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. Prosecutors want Pistorius convicted of the more serious crime of
murder and were granted permission to take the case to South
Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal.
Steenkamp instead is focusing on the planned Reeva Rebecca
Steenkamp Foundation to combat domestic violence and the
book she wrote about her daughter.
Steenkamp would not be drawn into questions about whether
she believed her daughter was a victim of domestic violence.
Instead, she urged women to speak out about abuse, when she
discussed her book and the foundation at a public event at the
University of Johannesburg. “Teach your daughters to have the
confidence to come forward. I knew nothing about Oscar’s guns
and his way of life,” Steenkamp said. “It was very strange that
they were fighting in a three month relationship.”
Steenkamp held up the book she has written about her daughter
as she spoke, and took the opportunity to discuss “Reeva: A Mother’s Story,” published in November last year. “She was, in the
trial, referred to as ‘the deceased.’ She became invisible. People
forgot that someone died here. My daughter died. Horribly.”
Despite her heartbreak, Steenkamp said she is not seeking
revenge against the amputee athlete. “I don’t want him to suffer
in any way, because he’s a disabled person,” said Steenkamp to
loud applause from the packed room.
The foundation will do the work the slain model would have
done if she had lived, said Steenkamp. Shortly before her death,
Reeva Steenkamp was preoccupied by the rape and murder of a
South African teenager, she said. “This is the work she left for me.”

West basketball honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Boise State head
coach Leon Rice was named coach of the year in the Mountain
West Conference and Broncos senior guard Derrick Marks was
selected as the league’s top player.
The league’s 11 coaches voted on the awards.
San Diego State junior forward Skylar Spencer and Wyoming
senior forward Larry Nance Jr. shared defensive player of the year
accolades and UNLV guard Rashad Vaughn was named freshman
of the year.
Boise State sophomore forward James Webb III and Colorado
State sophomore guard John Gillon were chosen newcomer and
sixth man of the year, respectively.
Nance led a group of four repeat all-conference honorees,
earning first-team accolades for the second straight year. Marks
and Colorado State’s J.J. Avila moved up to the first team and
CSU’s Daniel Bejarano earned second-team honors for the second
consecutive season.
Boise State won a share of the regular season crown by going
14-4 in league play. The 14 wins set a program record for most
conference wins and the Broncos became the first team in Mountain West history to win a regular season title after starting conference play 0-3.

LONDON (AP) — Lionel Messi’s record 24th Spanish league
hat trick put him at the top of the Associated Press Global Football
10 on Tuesday. Messi scored in Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Rayo
Vallecano. Teammate Luis Suarez, who was top of last week’s
vote, also scored two in the emphatic win but dropped to second
in this week’s poll.
Luis Enrique’s side also moved to the top of the league, as Real
Madrid lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao.
“Another week and another record - this time most hat tricks
for a Spanish club - for Lionel Messi,” Mike McGrath of The Sun
in England said. “And Barcelona are back at the top of the table,
so it no surprise they dominate the poll.”
In the team poll, Barcelona took first place ahead of Bayern for
wins over Vallecano, and Villarreal in the Copa del Rey.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Southeastern Conference
coaches named Arkansas’ Bobby Portis player of the year and
awarded coaching honors to Kentucky’s John Calipari.
The top-ranked Wildcats received several other awards from
the league coaches on Tuesday. Willie Cauley-Stein was named
defensive player of the year, Karl-Anthony Towns as the top
freshman and Devin Booker as the best sixth man.
Alabama’s Levi Randolph, a graduate student with a 3.75 GPA,
is the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Portis is averaging 17.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
He’s the first Razorbacks player to win the award since Corliss
Williamson in 1994 and 1995.
Calipari has led Kentucky to a 31-0 record, the SEC’s longest
winning streak.
Towns is averaging 9.7 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds.

Boatright, Moore are unanimous AAC picks
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Ryan Boatright of Connecticut
and Nic Moore of SMU were chosen unanimously for the American Athletic’s all-conference team.
The rest of the AAC’s first team was Austin Nichols of Memphis, Will Cummings of Temple and James Woodard of Tulsa.
One of those five will be chosen as the league’s player of the year
on Thursday before the conference tournament starts.
Moore scored 14.4 points per game for regular season champion SMU, while Boatright leads the league with a 17.8-point
average for Connecticut. Nichols was chosen the league’s rookie
of the year. The second team was: Cincinnati’s Octavius Ellis,
Tulane’s Louis Dabney, Tulsa’s Shaquille Harrison, and SMU’s
Markus Kennedy and Yanick Moreira.
Blizzard on Hawaii summit delays telescope construction
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Construction of one
of the world’s largest telescopes is being delayed
because of blizzard conditions on a Hawaii
mountain summit.
The Thirty Meter Telescope will be built near
the summit of Mauna Kea. If not for the winter
storm, construction preparations would be getting
underway at the site of the $1.4-billion project,
Sandra Dawson, telescope spokeswoman, told
Hilo newspaper Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
The Mauna Kea access road was closed
Monday because of snow and wind. Because of
frozen weather gauges, it was difficult to estimate
snowfall and wind speeds, said Ryan Lyman,
meteorologist for the Mauna Kea Weather
Center. He’s expecting up to 2 feet of snow
and winds of 50 mph to 70 mph, with a break
Tuesday and then snowing again Tuesday night.
Conditions may improve to reopen the road by
Friday or during the weekend, he said.
“The winds are pounding,” he said. “Snow is
all over the place.”
When telescope construction can begin will
depend on when the weather clears, Dawson said.
“We have to do some re-planning based on the
weather,” she said.
Even though access to the construction site
will be restricted, there are plans to accommodate
protesters, Dawson said.
Some oppose plans to build the telescope near
the summit of a mountain held sacred by Native
Hawaiians. Protests disrupted a groundbreaking
and Hawaiian blessing ceremony last year.
The telescope should help scientists see some
13 billion light years away for a glimpse into
the early years of the universe. Astronomers say
Mauna Kea is the ideal location for observing the
most distant and difficult to understand mysteries
of the universe.
Senate passes bill for $28M in
bonds for health exchange
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii lawmakers
may allow the state’s financially struggling
health exchange to issue up to $28 million in
bonds backed by the state.
The Senate passed a bill that would pave the
way for the bonds on Tuesday. If the bill becomes
law, the Hawaii Health Connector would issue
the bonds that would be paid back through revenues generated on the exchange.
A similar proposal already died in the Hawaii
House after concerns were raised over the funding
mechanism and the dollar amount.
Democratic Sen. Rosalyn Baker defends the
proposal saying the Hawaii Health Connector
has met its sustainability goals and has improved
with new leadership. Republican Sen. Sam Slom
is against the proposal and says the bill would
give the Hawaii Health Connector taxpayer
money that it doesn’t deserve.
Retired Hawaii Supreme Court
justice endows UH scholarship
HONOLULU (AP) — A retired state Supreme
Court justice and his wife have endowed a new
scholarship at the University of Hawaii’s law
school. The university announced Monday the
scholarship by Simeon Acoba Jr. and his wife,
Carolyn Acoba, will go toward tuition payments
at the law school, with a preference for students
who attended public high schools.
The Acobas are products of Hawaii public
schools. The retired judge is a Farrington High
School graduate, while his wife is an alumna of
Roosevelt High. They both attended the University
of Hawaii. Acoba retired last year from the Hawaii
Supreme Court, where he served since May 2000.
University President David Lassner says the
Acobas are paying it forward by investing in students who might not otherwise be able to afford
law school.
Report of screaming lead
police to Maui murder victim
KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) — Maui police say a
report of screaming heard in Kahului led officers
to a murder victim. Police say a caller reported
hearing a female screaming from a Kahului property early Monday. When officers arrived at what
police describe as a one-bedroom shack, they discovered a dead 43-year-old woman lying on the
floor. She appeared to have been stabbed.
Officers searching the area found a man in
the back portion of the property’s main dwelling.
The 25-year-old man was taken into custody
after police determined he had potential evidence
linking him to the woman’s death. Police didn’t
reveal what evidence was found.
UH West Oahu accreditation reaffirmed, concerns addressed
KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) — The Western
Association of Schools and Colleges is reaffirming accreditation for the University of
Hawaii’s West Oahu campus, while removing it
from notice-of-concern status.
In 2012, the association identified some areas
of concern, including leadership turnover and
creating a student-centered environment at the
new Kapolei campus. The association said in a
letter last week to Chancellor Rockne Freitas that
all areas of concern were satisfactorily addressed.
The association is asking the school to provide
an interim report in fall 2018 notifying the commission about progress on recommendations. The
recommendations include resource planning and
development toward financial stability, growing
faculty capacity, developing assessment systems
and strategizing distance education delivery.
Students still attending
unfunded charter school
HONOLULU (AP) — Nearly 60 students
continue to attend a Honolulu charter school even
though the state stopped funding it and plans are
underway to shut it down. Seven teachers are also
showing up daily at Halau Lokahi Public Charter
School, even though they were de-facto laid-off
when the state funding ceased.
The Hawaiian culture-focused school stopped
paying rent and salaries, running up $500,000 in
debt before last school year ended. The state charter
school commission voted to revoke the charter.
Most of the students switched to other schools.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper
reports the state attorney general has advised that
the students still reporting to Halau Lokahi aren’t
attending public school. The attorney general is
investigating alleged misuse of public funds by
the school’s previous administration.
Kaimuki water main break
prompts lane closures
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu authorities
say some lanes of a road in Kaimuki are closed
Tuesday as crews repair a water main break.
Hawaii News Now reports the break in the 12inch water main occurred on Waialae Avenue.
Responders have blocked off all lanes of the
road between 6th and 8th avenues. Also closed is
7th Avenue between Keanu Street and Waialae
Avenue. The work on repairs is expected to continue through the day.
Man dies in vehicle
crash on Maui highway
HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities say a
19-year-old Maui man has died after losing control of his vehicle on a highway.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper
reports Jose Vasquez Jr. of Pukalani was pronounced dead at the scene of the rollover crash
Monday night on the Old Haleakala Highway.
According to authorities, a 22-year-old passenger in the multipurpose vehicle sustained
minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Police say Vasquez was not wearing a seatbelt. The passenger was wearing one.

The unanimous No. 1 team
in the Top 25, the Wildcats
are looking to become just the
eighth squad to stay atop the
poll wire to wire.

appear to be in good shape for
top seeds, though an early slip in
the conference tournament for
either might cloud the outlook.
Much will depend on what
happens with other contenders
during this frenzied week in college basketball.

holds through Saturday’s championship game, it may be just
a matter of which team ends

Real Madrid advances despite a 4-3 loss to Schalke
MADRID (AP) — Iker Castillas made a pair of diving saves
in the final minutes, and Real Madrid advanced to the Champions
League quarterfinals despite a wild 4-3 loss to Schalke on Tuesday
night that left them with a 5-4 aggregate win in the home-andhome series.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on headers, raising his Champions League goals total to 75, and the defending champions
reached the quarterfinals for the fifth straight year. “We had problems in all aspects of our game,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti
said. “We have to say it clearly, we are playing very badly.”
Christian Fuchs put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute, and
Ronaldo tied the score five minutes later.
Madrid made three defensive errors in a row that culminated
with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar hitting a post in the 40th and scoring
seconds later after connecting with Casillas’ clearance of Max
Meyer’s shot.
Ronaldo scored his 75th career Champions League goal five
minutes later, and Karim Benzema dribbled past two defenders for
3-2 lead in the 53rd.
Leroy Sane curled a shot over Casillas in the 57th, Huntelaar
scored in the 84th and Casillas made a pair of diving saves in the
closing minutes.
“We tried everything to stay in the competition, nevertheless,

“O, Lord, help me to be glad when my son (or daughter) picks a mate. If he brings home a girl with

forbid that I should blurt out, ‘How far along is she?’
“And please, Lord, help me to get through the wedding preparations without a squabble with
the ‘other side.’ And drive from my mind the belief that had my child waited awhile, he or she could
have done better.
“Dear Lord, remind me daily that when I become a grandmother, my children don’t want advice on
how to raise their children any more than I did when I was raising mine.
“If you will help me to do these things, perhaps my children will find me a joy to be around,
and maybe I won’t have to write a ‘Dear Abby’ letter complaining about my children neglecting
me. Amen.”
