Historic Downtown Lewiston Mural Project
The mural at 513 Main Street, which
depicts three different eras of Lewiston’s Main Street, is complete! Peter
Goetzinger, a Lewiston native now
living in Sandpoint, put the finishing
touches on the mural on October 31.
Beautiful Downtown Lewiston is
thrilled with the finished product,
and grateful for all the support that
the community showed throughout
the process.
Mr. Goetzinger was also pleased with
the public’s response to the project.
“It’s rare to have this much community involvement and response,” said
Goetzinger. He received frequent
visits from community members
throughout the month of October, as
he worked on the mural day-in and
day-out. “(Community input) was
key,” he stated. “It really infused a
whole different spirit into the art. I
really appreciate all the people who
came by to tell me stories about their
ancestry.”
Beautiful Downtown Lewiston would
like to thank Mr. Goetzinger for
bringing his talent and appreciation
of our community’s history to this
new addition to downtown Lewiston.
Great thanks are also due to the
many businesses and individuals who
contributed financially to the project.
We invite donors and the public to
join us on November 9th at 12:00
p.m. for a special mural unveiling
celebration in the Towne Square
Parking Lot (adjacent to the mural
wall). There will be a brief presentation by Mr. Goetzinger and donors
will be honored. We hope you join us!

Downtown Welcomes Three New Businesses in November
Seasons Bistro opened its doors at 301 Main St. Suite 102 on
Friday, November 4, 2011. Owners Tina Poe and Ron Carpenter are
experienced restaurateurs who have had their eyes on a space in Morgan’s Alley for years. “It’s the most beautiful building in town,” said
Poe. “I know that someday soon this whole area will be bustling. We
wanted to get in on that. Downtown is becoming a happening place.”
In addition to the bistro, Poe and Carpenter are also new owners of
the Orchid Room in Morgan’s Alley. They have a catering business,
Seasons Catering, which will allow them to better serve Orchid Room
customers, although their catering services are not exclusive for that
event space.
Seasons Bistro, which is open for lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday and 4-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, serves a
variety of homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. They also offer small plates and appetizers that go well with wine.
Menu highlights include Asian Spring Rolls, Goat Cheese Salad, Curried Chicken Salad Sandwich, and Layered Italian
Torta. All menu items are under $10. Poe also has her own line of spice rubs which can be purchased on site.
The Locker Room Sports Salon, a popular men’s
hair salon already well-established in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls,
opened for business in Lewiston on November 1, 2011. The business, owned by Stacie Bishop and her father Bill Delbridge, found
its way to Lewiston through a family connection in the area. On
one of many visits to Lewiston, Bishop happened to be walking
along Main Street and noticed spaces available in Towne Square.
After getting in contact with the building owner, Mark Alexander,
and months of hard work to prepare their space, the salon is open
and ready for business on the corner of Main and Fifth. “I highly
recommend businesses (coming to Towne Square) because Mark
has been wonderful to work with,” Bishop said.
The Locker Room is open Monday-Friday from 10 am-7 pm and
Saturday 9 am-5 pm. They offer a unique environment where a man can get a hair cut, enjoy a cold beer or soda, watch
a game on one of the many flat screen TVs, and even shop for gear from their favorite team. They also offer father/son
specials, as well as discounts for veterans. Laura Metzger manages the Lewiston business.
Simple Eats Catering has been operating out of various
commercial kitchens….until now. The catering business, owned by
sisters Magen Goforth and Melony McKnight, will open its storefront
in Towne Square on November 14, 2011.
In addition to the advantage of having its own professional kitchen to
run the catering business out of, Simple Eats will also have the opportunity to expand as a business by serving a lunch menu and selling
take-home items such as beef and chicken roulade, compound butter,
and tomato and fig jams. Goforth says they will also be selling specialties, such as gourmet caramel apples and edible bouquets, out of the
storefront. The lunch menu will vary each week and be largely based
upon fresh, in-season ingredients. Buying her ingredients locally is
important to Goforth. She describes her menu as homemade, natural food that’s not compromised with additives. “I
want a place where you can go for fresh, seasonal, affordable items. It’s just good food!”
Goforth attended culinary school in Portland and returned to Lewiston to open her own business. She said she loves
downtown Lewiston because of its history, culture, and big city feel. “I saw everything BDL has been doing and called
on Towne Square one day to inquire about a space. The timing could not have been better. It was meant to be.”

From the Board...
You can nearly always tell the people from out of the area when they come into Jazzy’s
in Towne Square. They come in a bit tentatively, look around to size the place up, and
then more often than not, they come up and select a stool at the bar. After they place a
drink order and enjoy a sip or two, and after they have glanced around a bit more, the
questions start. “How big is Lewiston?” “What do people do here?” “What kind of restaurants are down here?” And after some more conversation, often the comment
comes, “Well, it looks like things are starting to happen downtown.”
I suspect most people, when they go to a new locale, head right for the downtown. I
know we do. When we decide to explore a city or town somewhere, especially when it
is just for the weekend, we drive right to the downtown. Drive around and pick out
some restaurant possibilities. Then check to see if there is nice lodging nearby so we
can just settle in for an evening of exploring, walking around, eating, and relaxing.
Sure, we could get a nice hotel way on the edge of town and then drive around and
find a restaurant, but what does that tell about what kind of a town it is. What kind of
an experience will we come away with?
Downtown is the heart and soul of the community. It tells a lot about the personality
and character of the town. About what the people in the community think is important. Is the downtown nicely laid out? Is the downtown clean and well kept? Are
there flowers, trees, plants, a public space where the community can come together to
celebrate and share?
A thriving downtown that offers entertainment, art and culture, cafes and restaurants,
museums and galleries, and fun boutiques and stores will draw visitors from surrounding towns. Where people would think of spending their special weekend in Lewiston.
Where Lewiston is the destination and downtown is the area of choice.
Very positive steps have been taken to improve the downtown, but sometimes the biggest impact can come from the smallest effort we can all do to make our downtown
nice – such as pulling weeds in the sidewalk and curb outside our businesses, picking
up any trash or litter in our nearby area, maybe rinse any dust and cobwebs off the
front (and back) of our businesses. Basically, just stand back and look at our buildings
and downtown streets and see if they look clean and appealing and inviting.

Committee Comments
Organization continues to plan major
programs for 2012, such as the BDL
Volunteer Program and BDL’s first
fundraising event, slated for early March
2012. The committee has also received
board approval to pursue a non-profit
status change, which will allow BDL to
more effectively recruit sponsorships and
grants, as well as providing a higher
benefit to our members.
Economic Restructuring recently hosted another Idaho Small Business Development Center training. This two hour
workshop, which was free to BDL members, focused on the topic of retail space
use and design. The committee has also
begun planning a social event for property owners, to be held in January 2012.
This event will allow BDL to further its
goal of working with property owners
on filling storefronts and providing resources to create a strong business climate downtown.
Design continues its work its work on
creating design standards for downtown.
Included in this document, which will be
available to downtown property owners
upon completion, will be suggestions on
streetscape elements, awnings, color palette, use of historic materials, and more.
The committee has also been working on
a incentive plan to create a cohesive look
amongst signage used by businesses.
Promotions October was a full month
with Pumpkin Palooza on October 15th
and Main Street Trick-or-Treat on October 31st. Both events drew huge
crowds to downtown Lewiston. The
committee will round out 2011 with
Decorate Downtown on November 12
and an ongoing holiday shopping promotional campaign throughout the
month of December. Shop Downtown
applications are now available to downtown businesses. Call 208.790.1148.
