Sugar Mammas specializes in the sweeter side of the baked goods spectrum — donuts, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, cookies and muffins. Pies and other pastries such as croissants, éclairs and cream puffs are in the works for the near future. They can create gift baskets to fit any budget and are willing to deliver any of their products anywhere in the valley. Call ahead to special order any of their menu items to carryout for meetings, events or birthdays. Sugar Mammas has a nice sized seating area including tables with chairs and a comfy corner featuring couches and side chairs. They have WiFi – it is free but you have to request the password. Sugar Mammas features DOMA brand drip coffee, fresh ground and brewed daily, as well as Mighty Leaf Teas. You will also find a variety of cold beverages provided by Coca-Cola and eventually Pepsi as well. Anna Hill is the head Mamma at Sugar Mammas. She is a military brat – born to Southern parents and raised in Georgia. She began baking at an early age and continued the tradition on through adulthood. Anna has baked as a hobby for many years. She recently decided to open the bakery after she joked that she would if she didn’t get into the radiography program. She did make it into the program but found the bakery calling her name, and it soon became an obsession. Anna soon began offering special order cookies, cakes and cupcakes to friends and businesses. Before long, she found herself needing more kitchen space. At this point it became apparent that a store front was definitely necessary. After looking at several locations and a number of conversations with Sascha Albrecht of Beautiful Downtown Lewiston and Mark Alexander, owner of Towne Square, she decided that downtown was the place to be. There couldn’t be a better place in all of Lewiston for the bakery. Sugar Mammas has been open now for 2 weeks and they are getting into the rhythms of the day and most of the time you can find an assortment of donuts, cinnamon 18 Alive After 5! rolls, cupcakes, muffins and cookies on the shelf. PAGE 2 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Herb Boreson The Diamond Shop President John Roy John Roy & Associates Vice President The Downtown Dish by Sascha Albrecht, BDL Executive Director Last year, $2.3 million was privately invested in the downtown corridor. With the flurry of building activity occurring right now, I anticipate that this year will exceed that mark. I am anxiously awaiting the re-opening of the LCSC Center for Arts & History, the completion of the building project at 5th & Capital Streets and the evolvement of the prominent Towne Square building at 5th & Main Street. Another noteworthy development is the Tribune’s removal of the blighted property on the 500 block of D Street. Each of these projects positively impact our downtown district. Thank you to these property owners for your substantial investments. Michelle Witthaus Northwest Media Sec./Treas. In addition to the continuous progress made in each of the BDL’s Main Street Program committees, downtown has momentum with the developments of the waterfront, parking and MPO developments. Each of these areas is critical to the success of our district. Vikky Ross Morgan’s Alley Past President The City’s Community Development department continues to deliver for downtown. Recently, it was announced that $290,000 of the Community Development Block Grant funds will be targeted for downtown improvement in the upcoming year. LCVMPO hears downtown traffic recommendations The WGM Group, a firm contracted by the Lewis Clark Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, made preliminary suggestions on traffic circulation at a June 30 public meeting. Beginning in November 2009, WGM conducted traffic studies from 15th Street in Clarkston to 22nd Street in Lewiston, encompassing both of the valley’s downtown areas along the U.S. Highway 12 corridor. WGM developed a traffic simulation for the year 2030, with land use and traffic volume changes factored in, and presented current and future trouble areas and proposed solutions at the public meeting to generate feedback. Although improving traffic flow is the primary goal, improving downtown’s ability to attract pedestrian traffic and making infrastructure changes to stimulate redevelopment are key as well. Here’s a brief synopsis of the suggestions for downtown Lewiston: The intersection of 18th Street and Main Street is the most congested. A roundabout was suggested for the long term, however a short-term solution would be to allow left turns on green lights rather than just during a left-turn-only cycle. Another proposal was to open D Street and Main Street to two-way traffic, rerouting more traffic onto the levee bypass. Enhancing the river-front property by adding connections as well as providing streets to connect to the old Twin City Foods plant. Improve way finding, particularly at entry points, by increasing signage. The end goal of WGM's work is to hand over a framework document to Lewis Clark Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization by which they can make future development decisions. The next public meeting will occur in September, when a fine tuned version of proposed solutions will be presented. To view the full presentation, visit http://lewisclarkmpo.org.
