WHAT'S HAPPENING
Breakfast of Champions
A REASON TO HOPE
See the events coming up this
month.
Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death of adults
in America and the 3rd leading cause of death of adults in
Washington State. Idaho has over 26,000 people living with
Alzheimer’s disease. The race is on. Alzheimer's and related
dementia research is a dynamic field and momentum builds
each year.

Recognize When to Take a Break
Have you ever played Candy Crush? My son, Keiran, who is now 8 and heading into third grade, recently introduced it to me. It is bright
and enticing with all of the glistening candy. It is all fun and games at first, and then it gets a little challenging, and then harder and
harder and I just can't win. I find myself stuck on a level for way too long, but I'm not one to give up, so I don't until I am forced to. That's
right, the game tells you when you've had enough and need to step back and do something else for a while. It even has a timer that tells
you when you have "permission" to get back to the struggle; and if you are one who likes a challenge, actually enjoy the struggle.
There are so many ways you can look at this:
1) Now I know how Kristin wastes her time (I call it decompressing)
2) I like candy, maybe I should download this game on my phone, or,
3) Is Kristin hinting at real-life? Knowing when to take a break and go back at it with fresh eyes?
All apply, but I am talking about number 3; knowing when to take a break and come back with fresh eyes.
KRISTIN KEMAK
President/CEO,
Lewis Clark
Valley Chamber
I am so guilty of this, so it makes me the perfect example! Now, I know I am using a silly game to open eyes.
I am just encouraging all of us to think about it. I was recently having a conversation with someone I like to
think of as my mentor and coach, and he told me that awareness is the first step to being able to correct a
problem/situation. So let's dig in.
Here are 9 signs it is time to take a break (Thank you Jeff Hindy at www.lifehack.org)
1. You're making small mistakes
2. You feel overwhelmed
3. You're tired all the time
4. You're irritable
5. You suffer from insomnia
6. You can't focus
7. You neglect other things
8. You don't have any motivation
9. You don't have any ambition
Do any of these hit home? Guess what? It is time to take a break and go back at it with fresh eyes! So let's put it out there; What should
we do to take a break (aside from playing Candy Crush)? What do you think LCVC Members? Do you have any tips and tricks to keep
fresh? Let me know at [email protected], and we can share your tips and tricks in the September newsletter!

Coffee Break with the
Idaho Foodbank
On Thursday, July 9, Chamber staff and Ambassadors stopped by the Idaho Foodbank to have a
coffee break with Cari Miller and the North Central Idaho branch crew. Their branch covers all of
North Central Idaho and takes food directly into communities that haven’t been able to support their
own permanent food pantries. Cari gave us a tour of their facility where we got to see their hard
working volunteers and hear about the future of the Idaho Foodbank in the LC Valley.

Natural Resource Committee Meeting
The Natural Resource Committee supports, promotes and protects the values and treasures of the Lewis Clark Valley by providing natural
resource issue awareness and education to the business community.
This month’s speakers were Patricia Hart and Ivar Nelson, presenting,
"The CCC in Idaho Forests: A research portal."
JUNE PRESENTATION
The CCC in Idaho Forests: A research portal to provide an online
finders’ guide to the people and activities of the Civilian Conservation
Corps in the forests of Idaho from 1932 to 1942.
We are currently researching the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC) and its involvement in the national forests of Idaho during the
1930s. The project will first result in a website through the University
of Idaho Library that will identify existing resources about the
people, places and history of the CCC and Idaho’s forests; resources
such as books, newspapers, reports, camp magazines, articles,
manuscripts, photographs, videos, archives, and websites. Once
the portal is active, we will be working on a book that will focus on
national issues that are central to CCC work.
Patricia is a professor of Journalism and Mass Media at the
University of Idaho as well as former director of the university’s
American Studies program. Ivar is the former director of the
University of Idaho Press. Together, we wrote a book on Wallace,
ID, called Mining Town, The Photographic Record of T.N. Barnard
and Nellie Stockbridge from the Coeur d’Alene’s.
Our current work on the CCC has been partly funded by a grant
to Patricia from the Idaho Humanities Council and is aimed at
increasing the accessibility of historical resources about the CCC
to researchers and the general public. The website will be an
online portal and finding guide that will searchable and sortable
in order to facilitate research, and will include names, locations,
camps, companies, events and other information, and pinpoint the
accessibility/location of that information. We are also considering
a book project based on this research, to follow later.
We are especially interested in locating memoirs, articles, letters
and personal histories about people’s lives in and around the CCC
during its existence from 1932 to 1942—concerning both enrollees
and local staff.

Lewis Clark Yin-Yang Professionals
Dave Pankey led a mindfulness meditation session for a group of LC
Young Professionals at his Quiet Tiger studio in Lewiston. He went
through exercises that clear the mind, relieve and prevent back pain,
and calm nervousness. Dave did a great job of providing history/
philosophy of his meditation practices, and tying in how each of
the participants may benefit in their work and personal lives. This
blended group meditation and Tai Chi was totally different from
other LCYP events. People were happy to learn about what Dave
offers at his studio and the time conversing afterward allowed
people to get to know each other more.
While getting a crowd to a networking meeting on a hot afternoon in
the valley maybe challenging, the LCYP lead man, Eric Justis, figured
they would keep it casual with some time on the river. He took a
group out on his boat for some Friday evening fun on the water, and
a good time was had by all! They have a 1st Wednesday Coffee Kickstart planned for August 5th at 7:15 am at Mystic Café in Lewiston.

The Best of Ireland
THE LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WILL BE OFFERING A FULLY ESCORTED TOUR OF THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY OF IRELAND.
Ireland is a country that has never lost a shared sense of community.
Even in towns and cities, the pace of life is gentler there; people
stop to chat in the streets, they are happy to give directions to
tourists, they are glad you have come and they are sorry to see you
go. Ireland has much to offer everyone. From storybook castles to
magnificent gardens, wide open spaces to the bustle of international
cities, breathtaking natural scenery to man-made megalithic
structures, Ireland opens her arms and welcomes you to explore her
ancient sites, traverse her green fields and discover her treasures.
The scenery is gorgeous, the weather is mild (though changeable),
there is a rich cultural heritage to discover, and a wealth of music
and stories to share. But the real joy of Ireland lies in the friendliness
of the people, the warmth of their welcome, and the ease with which
they make you feel at home.
Enjoy highlights such as Muckrose House, Cliffs of Moher, St.
Patricks Catherdral, Wicklow National Park, Adare Village, Blarney
Castle, Trinity College, Book of Kells, Old James Whiskey Distillery,
and more!
“This is truly an amazing opportunity to discover all that Ireland has
to offer. We at the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce are
so happy to be able to offer these extraordinary trips,” said Kristin

Workplace Wellness
Workplace Wellness Programs can help your employees get
healthier; sometimes all an individual needs is a little motivation to
get the ball rolling and a Workplace Wellness Program might be it.
Another great benefit is a built sense of camaraderie between
coworkers. They’ll have a chance to experience activities with each
other that aren’t related to work by going to the gym together before
or after work, or possibly even on their lunch break. Social support
is a very important part of weight loss and getting fit. Plus, they’ll be
motivated by seeing other’s positive results.
Adcope Athletic Club is the Valley’s only full service athletic club
with cardio equipment, weights, a mineral pool, racquetball, group
fitness class and more! We are here to motivate, facilitate, and to
help our members achieve their personal wellness goals!
AUGUST 2015
LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION
We would like to invite your company to become one of our
Workplace Wellness partners. At no cost to your company, your
employees gain the benefit of a discounted all-access membership
to the club. All we ask is that you give us the opportunity to make
presentations to your employees and provide club promotional
materials for you to distribute to your employees, such as in your
break room or HR Office.
I would love the opportunity to discuss this, as well as any other
way you feel Adcope can work with your business with you at your
earliest opportunity. I can be reached at 208.746.7472 or by email

Community Public Forum
Join us for a public forum on the Idaho Chamber Alliance's top
issue from the past legislative session - local option sales tax - and
have open dialogue on both the pros and cons of such legislation to
gauge the public interest in this legislation.
When: Wednesday, August 19th from 6-8pm
Where: LCSC SAC 115
The ICA feels that a local option sales tax will allow voters to make
decisions for their communities. In a nutshell, the legislation that is
being discussed would go something like this: Let's say that Moscow
and Potlatch got together and found land between the two cities to
build a new youth baseball/softball complex to attract tournaments
in the summer to help boost tourism and money spent in their
communities. The plans and cost of such a project must be finalized
before the project is put on the ballot for Latah County voters.
The voters in the county would then vote on whether to approve such
a project (there is debate whether it should be a simple majority
vote or 60 percent of the vote to pass). If it passed, the entire
amount of the project must first be collected through taxes before
any construction could begin, whether it's a half-cent or a full penny
tax (also tba). But all of the money must be collected before any
construction could begin. And if for some reason the project fell
through after any money had been collected, voters would have
to approve a new project of some type before any money could
be transferred to that project. And on every project, it starts at the
county level, but if it is a project for a specific city, the county can
opt out and the tax can only be collected in the city. A public forum
would allow more details to be provided as well as an opportunity
to discuss the pros and cons.

SEL to Open Health Clinic for Employees
Visiting the doctor is about to get easier and more affordable for
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories’ LC Valley employees and
their families. The company announced today that it will open an
on-site health clinic in their Lewiston facility this February.
“Our Pullman clinic has been an overwhelming success, and we’ve
received so much positive feedback from our employees, including
many from Lewiston who’ve made the 32 mile drive to visit the doctor
and nurses here,” said Michele Beehler, SEL Human Resources
Manager. “We are happy to now offer our LC Valley employees the
convenience of an on-site clinic too.”
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories invents, designs, and builds
digital products and systems that protect power grids around the
world. This technology prevents blackouts and enables customers
to improve power system reliability, safety and cost. SEL, a 100
percent employee-owned company that is headquartered in
Pullman, Washington, has manufactured products in the United
States since 1982 and now serves customers in 147 countries. SEL
provides unmatched technical support, customer service and a 10year worldwide warranty.
The clinic will provide employees and their families with
comprehensive care and assessment, without the co-pay. Services will
include physical examinations, vaccinations, weight management,
health screenings and lab services.
While many of the details are still being determined, the clinic will
most likely be staffed by a provider a couple of days per week, with
a full-time registered nurse, who will be cross trained as a wellness
coordinator. As the Lewiston employee base grows, so will the clinic
and its offerings, said Beehler.
“The nice thing about the SEL Health Clinic is that they offer sameday appointments, you don’t have to leave campus or be away
from work long, and there’s no copay,” said Karen Hess, a business
coordinator in SEL Information Services. “My son works here too,
and it’s been great for him to be able to bring my grandson in for
free immunizations and checkups.”
Daphne, a young patient at the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory
Health Clinic in Pullman, gets a checkup.
SEL included space for the 1,225 square-foot clinic when they built
the Lewiston facility in 2012. The plan was to open the clinic when the
number of employees, and their family members, reached the point
where they could sustain an on-site clinic. SEL Lewiston currently has
just over 275 employees.

Marketing Matters
MARKETING TO TRANSACTIONAL AND RELATIONAL SHOPPERS
Do you remember Blue Light Specials? For many years it was a
very successful campaign by K-Mart to move product instantly. A
store announcer would ask for the attention of the shoppers and
then direct them to a flashing blue light where they would find an
item at a fantastic sale price. Transactional shoppers ate it up!
Transactional shoppers are folks who are motivated by price; they
are bargain hunters who relish finding a great deal. Today in our
cost-conscious environment, a little more than half of the consumers
are in transactional shopping mode; they are looking to stretch their
budgets and have no problem shopping around for the best possible
price on the product they want to buy. The remaining consumers
are in relational shopping mode; rather than focusing solely on
price, they are drawn to a business because of its brand and the
relationship they have developed with its product, service, and staff.
Ask yourself: do you grocery shop at whatever store or stores have
the best sale in a given week, or do you typically do business with
the same store because it is familiar and you like the experience
you have when you shop there? When marketing your business, you
are attracting both transactional and relational prospects. And they
each speak a different language.
There are benefits and pitfalls to each method of advertising. One
of the benefits of transactional advertising is that you will get quick
results because you are offering a SALE, coupons, or a compelling
offer. Generally there will be a time limit on the offer or limited
quantities which drive traffic. One of the pitfalls of transactional
advertising is that you will not have customer loyalty. If your
competitor offers a better deal on the same product, they will shop
there; remember transactional shoppers love to price compare and
look for the best deal. You will recognize them because they come
into your store with a coupon or flyer or ask about the special they
heard on the radio. Another pitfall of transactional advertising
is that you train your customers to wait for a sale before they do
business with you.
Some of the benefits of relational advertising are customer loyalty,
repeat business, and great word of mouth testimonials. Companies
who have successfully branded themselves actually have customers
wear their logos on their clothing or even tattoo their logos onto
their skin…think Harley Davidson, Apple, or Nike. One of the
pitfalls of relational advertising is that good branding takes time, it
is something that builds gradually, and is developed with consistent
marketing. A branding campaign will not deliver instant results like
a blow-out sale.
Roy Williams, of Wizard Academy, has outlined steps to reach the
transactional and relational customer.
Transactional:
1. Make a compelling offer
2. Impose a time limit
3. Make a limited quantity available
Relational:
1. Give them specific details
2. Give them an honest evaluation of the product
3. Deliver what you promise
4. Add in a ‘delight factor,’ some unexpected added value
Your business will attract both transactional and relational shoppers.
A wise business will recognize their customer, and then speak their
language. And importantly, train your sales staff to identify whether
a customer is a transactional shopper who is interested in price,
PRICE, PRICE or a relational shopper who is interested in fine details
about the product, an honest assessment of its quality, and an expert
opinion. Then let them speak their language.
By giving each customer a positive, pleasant experience with your
business, you will create an impression that may turn a transactional
shopper into a loyal relational customer for life.

Pay Attention to Storage Costs
and Ways to Reduce Them
Reducing the cost of storage — especially the expense of stockpiling
operational records, inventory, and raw materials — can be a real
challenge for any business. Dilemmas abound: What records should
be kept and for how long? When and how should the firm dispose
of obsolete inventory? Should on-site or off-site storage be used?
Consider the following suggestions for reducing your company's
storage costs.
•Records management. A well-thought-out records retention
schedule, especially when paired with reliable software, can
help ensure that a company doesn't incur unnecessary storage
costs. Relatively inexpensive computer applications can be
used to organize files and alert staff when it's time to dispose
of specific records in accordance with company policy. By
conducting routine file audits you can even ferret out unneeded
records before they're sent to storage. (Just be sure to retain
any paper documents that may be needed for legal, tax, or
regulatory purposes.)
Some businesses choose to reduce storage costs by creating
digital scans of their important documents. Though initially
time consuming and labor intensive, the process of scanning
documents provides the added advantage of improved access
to archived records. Searching a well-organized database from
the comfort of your office beats walking the aisles of a dusty
warehouse in hopes of finding some long-lost document.
•Dealing with obsolescence. Businesses shouldn't pay year after
year to store something that may never be sold. A prudent
manager will track outdated inventory and ensure that it's
discounted for quick sale or moved — temporarily — into storage.

Paying for warehouses filled with obsolete products and raw
materials is a drain on revenue. So it's important to pay attention
to inventory. The time may come when stored inventory needs to
be hauled to the nearest recycling station or sold via an online
auction.
•On-site or off-site storage? Having reached storage capacity at
your current site, offsite solutions may be the only option. But
sometimes a little creative management can yield great results
and reduce the need for space elsewhere. For example, you
may discover open racks that can be used to store supplies or
inventory in a smaller (and less expensive) space. If you opt for
off-site storage, be sure to negotiate a contract that's to your
advantage. All fees should be itemized, exit fees should be
minimized, and terms and conditions should be spelled out.
