DRAFTING SUCCESS
By Mike Cannon, BDL Board Member, My Architect, LLC
Spring excites people for a lot of different
reasons. It could be the blooming vegetation, or the fact that summer is just around
the corner. For me, I love spring for one
specific reason. The National Football
League offseason. Don’t get me wrong, my
eyes are usually glued to the TV on a Sunday during the season. But nothing excites
me more about the league than being alerted on my phone concerning player trades,
free agency acquisitions, draft picks, etc.
What is the root for this excitement? Simple. The offseason is an opportunity for an
organization to build their franchise into a
winning atmosphere for a sustained period
of time, from the ground up. The success or
failure of that franchise relies on a series of
good decisions from their office personal /
coaches and their ability to communicate
and practice their main philosophy.
Much like any other franchise, we too have
a central theme or ‘philosophy’ that we
communicate and practice throughout our
organization. Beautiful Downtown Lewiston, created in 2008, is a young organization that has been consistently improving
each year of its existence. Upon its creation,
came the adoption of our main philosophy,
which was developed by the National Main
Street Program in the form of the “Four
Point Approach”. This approach, if followed correctly, is structured to provide
stability and long term success
for our downtown. It has become
a national model for revitalization
and the statistics show that success can very likely be in our
favor. In order for the process to
work, it has to have the full commitment from the community.
The sooner the community becomes committed, the faster it
moves.
The Seattle Seahawks (Northwest
favorite) is a great example of a
young franchise that has been consistently
improving ever since head coach Pete Carroll was hired in January of 2010. Upon his
hiring came certain philosophies that he
personally developed throughout his years
as a college football coach at USC. Many of
these philosophies include concepts such as
promoting competition, developing relationships, and increasing player work ethic,
strong recruitment, and preparation. His
approach to revitalization, if accepted by all
players and coaches, is also structured to
provide stability and long term success for
the Seattle franchise. In order to become a
championship contender for multiple seasons, he has to have the full commitment
from the players, coaches, etc. The sooner
they ‘buy in’, the sooner Seattle will finally
win a Super Bowl!

In his introductory press conference as head
coach, Carroll stated:
“BUILDING A FRANCHISE WITH A CERTAIN LEVEL OF SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS WILL ULTIMATELY TAKE A WHILE
TO ACHIEVE. BUT IT IS NOT A DAUNTING PROCESS, JUST AS LONG AS YOU
TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME AND WORK
TO IMPROVE THE ORGANIZATION EVERY SINGLE DAY.”
The revitalization of Downtown Lewiston
will take time to accomplish. But the process and philosophy that we have adopted
WILL, in due time, lead our downtown and
our community on a path to greatness. Trust
in the philosophy and we shall create a winning atmosphere for many years to come.
CREATING A VITAL, INVITING DOWNTOWN LEWISTON WHICH WILL PROM OTE QUALITY
BUSINESS, CULTURAL, AND COMMUNITY GROWTH
Hello BDL Supporters!
BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN
I recently had the incredible opportunity to represent Lewiston at the National Main Street
Conference. This annual event is the very best way to learn from and network with other Main
Street professionals. I came away from the conference with so many new ideas and “best practice” examples that I couldn’t choose just one to write about this month.
So, in lieu of my regular article, I would like to invite you to coffee. If you are interested in
chatting with me about any of the topics I studied at the conference—business recruitment,
walkability, youth engagement, second floor housing, or crowdfunding, just to name a few—let
me know. Whether you’ve been volunteering with BDL for years or you just recently learned
about our organization, I’d love to sit down with you for a conversation about downtown
revitalization!
Sincerely,
Breanne Durham, BDL Executive Director

Friends of the Market
With the 2013 season of the Lewiston Farmers
Market gearing up (kick off is June 8), it seemed
like a great time to highlight a wonderful group of
BDL volunteers: The Friends of the Market!
Started in early 2012, the Friend of the Market
group was created to increase community involvement in the Lewiston Farmers Market. BDL did an
all-call for volunteers and were thrilled with the
turnout! Of those initial meetings, a core group of
committed individuals began meeting once or
more per month to plan various aspects of the
market. As the 2013 season grew new, we did
another all-call and are happy to be welcoming
three more wonderful volunteers to the Friends of
the Market group!
Volunteer tasks range greatly within the Friends of
the Market group. One basic function is to promote the market. This can take on many different
forms, and we don’t at all discredit the power of
word of mouth, so we encourage all our Friends to
regularly attend the market and share their experiences within their own networks. Staffing the market, working with vendors, and helping to conduct
annual market assessments are other important
functions.
Though each Friend comes from a different background, they all share one very important connection: Friends of the Market love farmers’ markets
and want to see ours thrive! A farmers’ market is,
by nature, community-oriented, so the Friends of
the Market group tends to attract individuals who
care about healthy living, local food and businesses, and creating a strong sense of place.
Please contact us (208.790.1148) if you are
interested in becoming a Friend of the Market!

CONGRATS TO MARTIN INSURANCE
Congratulations to our partners at Martin Insurance in downtown Lewiston!
They were recently awarded the prestigious Premier Partner Award. Here is
their statement:
“Less than 10% of Safeco’s agents are chosen for the Premier Partner Award
which recognizes the agencies that meet Safeco’s highest performance standards in personal lines (home, auto, recreational vehicles, boats, etc). We have
to be excellent front line underwriters, claims advocates and exhibit strong
growth. We get a number of extra resources by earning this award including
special training, custom programs and a dedicated claims contact for our
agency to assist if we have claims that need special attention. It’s great for us
and even better for our customers.”
HONOR A BUILDING OWNER:
NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR ORCHID AWARDS!
STUDENT PROJECT ON DISPLAY
AT LEWIS CLARK RECYCLERS
The Lewiston Historic Preservation Commission is seeking nominations
from the public for the annual Orchid Awards for Historic Preservation. The
“Orchid Awards” highlight the actions of those individuals and businesses
who invest both their financial and intellectual capital to preserve our heritage. This is a wonderful way to honor their contributions to our community.
Hopefully you made it to the 8th Annual Earth Day Celebration two weeks ago, but in case you missed it (or in
case you had so many fun activities to participate in that
you didn’t notice…), you have another chance to view the
student work that was on display there:
Residents are urged to nominate their favorite historic building in our
community or to nominate an individual or groups who have worked to
preserve our community’s heritage.
Tuesday, May 7, 2013 2:30-7:00 PM at 207 Capital St.
The nomination form can be found at www.cityoflewiston.org or picked up
at Community Development -215 ‘D’ Street. Nominations should be received by Friday, May 31st 2013, for consideration. Award winners will be
announced on June 14th, 2013.
University of Idaho Landscape Architecture students
worked on a semester-long project related to a parcel of
land in downtown Lewiston. They came up with some
creative ideas on how to update the land and turn it into a
vibrant community space! Students will be on hand to
give presentations and speak about their concepts!
COMMITTEE COMMENTS
Organization is planning a volunteer appreciation event to be
held in June, preparing a marketing campaign for BDL called “My
Downtown,” and recruiting new supporters through direct contact
and an upcoming social event to be held in a newly developed
downtown business!
Design is working on various projects, including sprucing up the
informational kiosk at the Historic District Parking Lot on D
Street and creating welcome banners to be hung from the new
light poles. All banners on Fifth Street have been funded (!) and
there are four banners available for sponsorship on First Street.
Economic Restructuring is meeting with various developers and
making headway on a number of projects related to filling and
enhancing downtown properties. Work has begun with regional
groups in an effort to bring or create a small business incubator in
downtown Lewiston. The committee continue to work toward
stronger business retention in the downtown corridor.
Promotions is looking forward to our new event—Hometown Pep
Rally—on Saturday, May 18.. The committee is in full swing with
planning the new Sound Downtown concert series, the Lewiston
Farmers Market, and planning for another great Lewitson’s Hot
August Nights this summer. Mark your calendars for June 8, when
Sound Downtown and the market will both kick off at 4:30 PM.
