Eric Brush General Manager Sound Garden Q. Often there is a high turnover in the retail business. The Sound Garden has been downtown for 18 years. To what do you attribute its successful longevity? A. We mix an independent spirit with solid, proven core business values. It’s OK not to be a “mall store.” To do retail well takes proper signage, design, structured hours, cleanliness, etc. Target is an amazing retailer. Notice the little things that they incorporate into your own unique shopping experience. Q. Why have you chosen to continue doing business in Downtown Syracuse? A. The Sound Garden relies on a diverse population. We believe in being a downtown anchor tenant and forging our business path based upon the variety of people who frequent our stores. Every race and every age group shop at Sound Garden. Q. In your recollection, who has been your most famous customer? A. John Densmore of The Doors, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes and even actress Kate Hudson have shopped here. The list is pretty long. Q. What is your vision for the Downtown Syracuse of tomorrow? A. I’d like to see a larger mix of independent retail, restaurants and bars. Downtown should offer different choices mixed with the convenience of the suburban mall. Available parking, walkability, variety of retail and affordable rental units should attract the next generation. “We mix an independednt spirit with solid, proven core business values.
