Dear Friends:
Happy Spring! Well I believe the nicer weather has finally arrived. The birds
are chirping, the rabbits are enjoying the warm sun and we are ready to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day and Live More week!!! This
year’s theme, “Improve Your Health For A Better Self”! This year we will be
looking to be more active during Live More Week, May 23 – 27… we are
planning extra exercise events, including our Olympics, and tons of fun! New
this year, join us for our Lip Sync battles. Staff and residents will join forces
to entertain and battle it out to find out who are the best lip sync artists at The
Hearth on James.
A friendly reminder, our new emergency call system will be installed May 1620th. I’m looking forward to the upgraded system that will now allow for the
use of pendants. To purchase a pendant, please contact Christi in the Business
Office. If anyone has any concerns or questions regarding the new system,
please contact me.
New this year, we will be celebrating RED NOSE DAY on Thursday, May
26th. We will be selling red noses, red beads, and other RED items for the day.
ALL proceeds will be donated to support Red Nose Day which helps fund
various children hunger organizations. Then, in the evening, you can relax
and watch NBC for their Red Nose Day program and celebration.
Please look at all the events going on this month! The Activity Department
has scheduled so many exciting and fun programs that there should be something for everyone to participate in. Please be sure to get out and have some
fun.
Sincerely,
Kelly

Celebrating LIVE MORE™ in the month of May!

A hot topic everywhere is Brain Health. The truth is that there
is not a magic pill to take or puzzle to do to assure brain health.
Research shows and is illustrated in the “web” diagram below
(below left) that safety, nutrition, physical exercise, sleep, hydration, stress management, treatment of disease, and mental
activity/stimulation must all work together to obtain optimal
brain health. You can definitely tell when you have not had
quality sleep that your brain function can be diminished. The
reverse can be said that after physical activity your brain sharpness increases. When you do both and add the other components to daily living, you are on your way to attaining brain
health!
Hearth’s LIVE MORE™ philosophy closely aligns with the
brain health concept with our multi-faceted, holistic approach.
As illustrated by the Live More™ Wheel (above right), when
our spirituality and emotional needs, stimulate socialization,
work towards good nutrition & hydration, get physical activity
and address environmental, vocational and intellectual needs are
addressed, we can achieve a more fulfilling lifestyle equal to
LIVING MORE! Some of the facets of LIVE MORE™ may
come easily for us and our job is to work on the facets that may
be lacking.
We look forward to having a fun filled week starting May 22nd
when we celebrate LIVE MORE™ and National Senior Health
and Fitness Day with both residents and staff in all Hearth communities! We will introduce fun and easy activities plus educational events demonstrating how we can include new habits into
our routine. We hope to provide a roadmap motivating all to
work towards optimizing all facets of healthy living so we can
all …LIVE MORE™!
No Fall Zone
Happy Mother’s Day! Being a woman and a mother is
one of the greatest joys in life. What is not so
great is that women are at a 10% higher risk of falls
than men. In older women, falls can be particularly
troublesome because osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of the bones) is a widespread problem which increases the chance of fractures following a fall.
Childbearing can increase in severity of osteoporosis
which most women have after the age of 70%. Weightbearing exercises and fall prevention techniques go a
long way in preventing falls and fractures!
