I feel incredibly fortunate to have had two incredible learning opportunities in the last two
weeks that I’m just bursting to share with you!
Though this article will be brief, I also want to
offer an open invitation to sit down with any of
you who would like to hear more about the
following topics!
First, a true downtown revitalization guru,
Kathy LaPlante from the National Trust Main
Street Center, visited Lewiston for a day-long
training on October 25. There is some real momentum building for Main Street in Idaho right
now, so Lewiston, as one of the few cities in the
state that is already following the Main Street
Approach, served as host to Kathy during her
Northern Idaho tour. In addition to representatives from Lewiston, Kathy’s morning workshops benefited community leaders from neighboring cities such as Moscow, Orofino,
Sandpoint, and Pierce. I am very excited to
continue building strong ties with our partners
across the state as Main Street grows in Idaho.
During her afternoon workshops, Kathy spoke
directly with BDL committee volunteers. She
spent time on each of BDL’s four core committees, answering questions and sharing bestpractice tips with committee members. The
workshop was dynamic and inspiring for myself and those in attendance. Each committee
will now take their notes from Kathy’s training
and turn them into their work-plans for 2013.
Just a few days later I traveled to Spokane for
the National Preservation Conference, for
which I was awarded a scholarship from Preservation Idaho to attend. Preservation is an essential piece of downtown revitalization, so I am
so grateful that I had an opportunity to immerse
myself in the topic for four full days. Here are
some of my (very brief) take-away points from
the conference:





Preservation is anything but old and boring. The field of preservation is full of
incredibly passionate people who are experts in the area of using the resources
available to make things happen!
Historic Tax Credits are a very underutilized tool that we, in Lewiston, need to
start taking advantage of...soon!
Preservation is not just about buildings—it
was widespread impact on local economies (including tax base and job growth),
the environment, and even education.
Though there is no perfect combination,
most large-scale rehabilitation projects get
off the ground through the use of publicprivate partnerships
This Place Matters is a national campaign
hosted by the National Trust. It is also an
ethic that is absolutely essential to the
preservation movement, which includes
downtown revitalization. The great news is
that our community has this ethic in
spades. This place matters!

Lewiston’s business plan competition, Spark Downtown.
We received some great resumes and are happy to announce that we have selected
this year’s winner, Kris Wallace of Buy the Dozen.
Kris will set up shop toward
the end of November in the
Liberty Theater building and
run the business through the
Christmas season.
Buy the Dozen sells fresh donuts that are dusted with a variety of flavor choices. The
business has had a presence

various other events throughout the area.
The goal of the competition is
to give a hopeful business
owner an opportunity to see if
their business concept might
work as a long term opportunity in Downtown Lewiston. It also is designed to
create excitement in downtown by filing a vacant storefront during the holiday season.
We appreciate Greg Castellaw and Larry Kom, both part
owners of the Liberty building, for working with Kris
and her husband John to get
the space ready for Buy the
Dozen’s holiday pop-up shop.
Over the next week, BDL
committee members will be
contributing volunteer hours
to help the Wallaces’ efforts
to do minor rehab work in the
Liberty’s entryway.
BDL is excited to have Kris
and Buy the Dozen in our
downtown corridor. Please

BDL Core Committee Members
November seems like a good time to take a step back from the regular hustle and bustle of downtown promotions and development efforts to truly appreciate what an incredible organization
Beautiful Downtown Lewiston has become. One of the most important factors in BDL’s continued growth has been the hard-working group of community members who serve on our four core
committees: Design, Economic Restructuring, Organization, and Promotions. These people meet
at least once a month in regular committee meetings and often put in extra time throughout the
year as projects require. They come from various backgrounds and typically align themselves
with the committee wherein their unique skills can best be utilized. What they all have in common is a desire to serve their community and a shared vision for a vital downtown Lewiston.
Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to remind us to be thankful. This was the case two
weeks ago at the workshop provided by Main Street guru Kathy LaPlante, who made the comment during a training for BDL volunteers that she was very impressed by the number of people
who attended, especially considering that the training took place in mid-afternoon. Kathy was
right—BDL volunteers are extremely dedicated, eager to learn, and generous with their time and
resources. They deserve a great deal of respect and appreciation for the work they do to make our
community a better place.

DECORATE DOWNTOWN
Volunteers are invited to help decorate downtown Lewiston for the holiday season. In coordinate with
Winter Spirit, volunteers will string lights around the trees that line Main Street. This is a great opportunity for students, families, and new volunteers to get involved with BDL!
NEW: Winter Spirit, with help from a number of BDL members, raised funds to purchase all new
white LED lights for Decorate Downtown. Main Street will look better than ever this holiday season!
Event details: Saturday, November 10, 2012. Meet at 8:00 a.m. in Brackenbury Square. Coffee
provided for volunteers!
VALLEY VETERANS PARADE
The Lewis-Clark Valley Veterans Council will once again host the Valley Veterans Parade in November. The parade will begin at 11:11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Line up will take place
on Snake River Avenue from Primeland to the bypass on Prospect Avenue for larger entries.
The parade will travel along Main Street in downtown Lewiston. Businesses are encouraged to participate by inviting parade-goers in to shop, setting out chairs, and flying a flag.
The theme of this year’s parade is “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Applications for parade entries, as well
as more event information, are available at http: valleyveteranscouncil.webs.com.
BDL CELEBRATES SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
This holiday season, as a kick-off for the Shop Downtown shopping campaign, BDL will host a special
event in Saturday, November 24. The day is known as Small Business Saturday, which has become a
nationally recognized day for supporting and celebrating small businesses across the country. Using
momentum from this national campaign, BDL will invite downtown businesses to participate in special
promotions on November 24 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. BDL will host special festivities in Brackenbury
Square, including local choir performances and Christmas tree sales by All Saints Catholic School.
Businesses are encouraged to host their own promotions in coordination, such as wine tasting, art showing, or special shopping/dining discounts. Again, this is a kick-off for the month-long Shop Downtown
campaign, for which applications are due on Friday, November 9.

NEW BUSINESS: SEASONS & MORE
On November 1, a new business opened up on Main Street—Seasons & More is a year-round
holiday shop that specializes in crafts, gifts (ranging from homemade soy candles to women’s
athletic jerseys), and décor items. Their shop at 836 Main Street is quickly filling with vendors
and crafters wishing to sell their unique products. They also have a number of pre-decorated
Christmas trees for sale, as well as an assortment of ornaments.
Owner Leslee Henry and investor Audrey Holt say that they have dreamed of opening a holiday
store for years. They see a need for a holiday shop in downtown Lewiston. Their store will have
Christmas craft and décor items year-round and seasonally focus on other holiday décor such as
Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am—6 pm. During December they will also be open on Mondays. Welcome to downtown, Seasons & More!
NEW OWNERSHIP: DISCOVERY ANTIQUES
" iscovery Antiques customers are delighted that the high-quality antique shop on Main Street will
D
remain open with new ownership (and a slightly new name: Discovery Antiques II). A long-time
interest in collections, plus years of business experience, led Jan and Gary Hicks to take over the
antique shop at 706 Main Street. Earlier this year, they began using a small portion of Crop Paper
Scissors for antique sales and found that the business was so successful that they needed a larger
space. Taking over Discovery Antiques has allowed them to expand their business, while also
maintaining the name of an existing, high-quality antique shop downtown.
Discovery Antiques II is now owned and operated by Jan and Gary, who rent booths in the store
to a select number of antique dealers. Jan says they are very specific about the mix of high quality
furniture and collectables that the store will maintain. She also mentions that new inventory is
coming into the store very consistently, so it is a place customers can return to weekly! Discovery
Antiques II is open Monday-Saturday (now 6 days a week!) from 10 am—5:30 pm.
MURAL IN THE WORKS
Artist Rolf Goetzinger began work last month on the west-facing mural on the Sonoco building.
The mural is meant to enhance the public art feature, “Canoe Wave,” that was added to the Lewiston’s entryway in late 2010. Rolf’s water and fish concept will add context to Christopher Fennel’s sculpture which incorporates approximately 30 repurposed canoes. Rolf began by enlarging
his concept onto the building, and he will pick back up in spring 2013, due to the difficulties of
working on an outdoor project of this magnitude during winter months.
Rolf happens to be the brother and business partner of Peter Goetzinger, the artist Beautiful
Downtown Lewiston commissioned to create a historic mural for the west-facing wall of 513
Main Street in 2011. Peter is currently working on his second project in Lewiston, as he and his
wife Kelly Price were selected to design the library focal point as part of the Fifth Street rebuild.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM SOCIAL
On Thursday, November 8, Beautiful Downtown Lewiston hosted its first wide-spread (all BDL
committee members were invited!) volunteer appreciation social. This event was made possible
through a specific BDL Volunteer Program sponsor: Hometown Chevrolet Dealers! Big
thanks go out to the folks at Hometown Chevy—we are thrilled to be able to recognize and celebrate our amazing volunteers!
Attendees were treated to refreshments (food prepared by Simple Eats Catering) and live jazz
music at Blue Lantern Coffee House. Over 30 volunteers attended the event! BDL hopes to host
more volunteer functions such as this one in the future, thanks to the generosity of our sponsor.
THANK YOU to all BDL volunteers! Whether you volunteer frequently or once a year for a specific program, you are playing an integral role in making our vision for downtown a reality!
COMMITTEE COMMENTS
Organization is pursuing a change in non-profit status from a 501
(c)6 to a 501(c)3, which will allow BDL members and sponsors to
list their generous contributions as tax-deductible. A volunteer
program sponsor has been secured, so the committee will now be
able to start planning volunteer recognition activities, including
volunteer t-shirts and quarterly appreciation events. The committee is also planning BDL’s first fundraiser event for Feb. 2013.
Design is finalizing work on design guidelines for downtown.
Included in this document, which will be available to downtown
property owners upon completion, will be suggestions on
streetscape elements, awnings, color palette, use of historic materials, and more. The committee has also been working on a incentive plan to create a cohesive look amongst signage used by businesses.
Economic Restructuring is pursuing follow-up information and
visits with property owners in the downtown corridor. Regional
businesses have been visited and given information about opportunities in downtown Lewiston; follow-up contacts are now being
made. The committee is finalizing rehab details for the Spark
Downtown business plan competition winner, whom the committee will be working closely with for the next two months.
Promotions is wrapping up a busy autumn season full of events:
Downtown Art Walk, Pumpkin Palooza, and Main Street Trick-orTreat are all behind us now. We are looking forward to another
Shop Downtown campaign this holiday season, beginning on
Black Friday and running until Christmas Eve. To kick-off the
campaign we will be hosting festivities downtown on Small Business Saturday, November 24, from 12:00-5:00 PM.
