May 31/11 Joplin, Missouri Tornado. While I have no idea whether the recent devastating tornado in Joplin, Missouri, USA made the news around the world it certainly has in North America. There are three heat treats in Joplin (2 captives and 1 commercial) and we have been worried about how they were effected. A friend and regular reader of "The Monty", Jimmy N. Morris of Aerospace Technology Partners Inc., [email protected] was in this area recently and after reading our comments of earlier this week took some photos of the area along with a picture of Trojan HT which appears to have suffered no damage, Jimmy also said the FAG plant appears to be fine although nobody was at either location. May 30/11 4 New Heat Treat in Connecticut, USA? A reader alerted us to the fact that in Newington, Connecticut a 37,000 square foot facility was just sold to a company by the name of Souza Investments LLC. The reason stated when it was purchased was that it will house a heat treating services operation which can only mean a commercial heat treat. The building sold for $600,000 USD but as to who Souza Investments is and what the name of the actual company will be we have no idea. I am sure we will find out though. We always enjoy comments from heat treat consultant David Pye about various aspects of the heat treating industry. Here are his latest. To David's thoughts we will add that duct fires and quench oil fires are far and away the most common reason for fires in the industry. May 27/11 "It was reported on The Monty about the fire that occurred at the Rubig Heat Treatment facility in Wels, Austria. While the fire was safely handled, there is a lesson to be learned from the pictures and the incident. Fortunately no one was injured or hurt. We have discussed safety in heat treatment on numerous occasions. We have also discussed the subject of maintenance. Each of the two subjects has been treated as separate subjects, and we have not discussed them jointly. This is the time to discuss them jointly. A heat treatment shop has the potential to be a dangerous work environment no matter how well the shop is kept. It has the potential for; . Fire . Explosion . Burns . Material handling injuries 5 . . Electrical shock Toxic fumes The above are just a few of the potential hazards that can occur in the shop. We push the aspect of safety in the heat treatment shop, but often the aspect of maintenance is neglected. Fume extraction ducts are often overlooked for contamination of; . . Oil condensation from the oil quench bath smoke Dust particles in the atmosphere being drawn into the ducts and mixing with the oil fume condensate. Because we cannot see inside the duct work, it is very often overlooked in terms of a maintenance program. If a fire does break out inside the duct, . Very often the only remedy is to either let it burn itself out, . Knock down the duct work if it is easily accessible . Try to remove the air that will support combustion (flood with nitrogen or some other non flammable gas) Or better still reduce the risk of the fire starting. This can only be done with both appropriate and adequate preventative maintenance program. Granted, that maintenance programs cost the company both time and money and especially in the commercial heat treatment shop that generates its revenue from the furnace equipment. But it is that furnace and auxiliary equipment that is generating the revenue for the shop. Who pays for the maintenance programs? Ultimately it is the customer that is paying for it by utilizing the heat treatment shops skills, equipment and facility. Can the maintenance cost be covered by the heat treatment processing charges? It should be! The old saying that 'an ounce of preventative maintenance is better than catastrophic maintenance' is quite true. If the equipment breaks down (for whatever reason) then the equipment is not generating revenue, but it is losing revenue while the equipment is being repaired. The heat treatment associate is very often the best line of defense if there is not a Standard Operating Procedure for maintenance in place. The associate can see, hear and smell. It is a recommendation that when the associate comes on shift, then the associate should do a 'walk about' around the equipment and if any abnormalities noted, then the appropriate maintenance associate should be brought in. Without the equipment being on line, the shop is not generating any revenue. Think about your own automobile, one of the things that we do is to have the vehicle maintained and serviced, then why not service and maintain the heat treatment furnace equipment and associated equipment. It is a shame that the fire in question at the Rubig facility, because it is a very impressive facility as seen from the pictures that The Monty published and yet it is very heartening that no one was injured. Yet even though it is an impressive shop, it can be seen that problems do occur even in the best of circles. Maintain and prevent (or at least minimize) is what should be the key words to every heat treatment shop, commercial or captive." Rubig Engineering Fire. Rubig Engineering is best known as a manufacturer of new Ion Nitriders and vacuum furnaces. Located in Wels, Austria this is a very impressive operation as you can see from the photo below taken just over a month ago. Just a few days ago the company suffered a small fire located in the duct work from their batch IQ furnaces. It really wasn't that big a deal however when you look at the video clip below you would think this was a 5 alarm fire, I don't think I have ever seen this many fire trucks and firefighters in my life. When you go to this link scroll down to the second video frame. Process-Electronic (www.group-upc.com), a member of United Process Controls, completed phase two of a furnace controls and automation upgrade for General Dynamics European Land Systems Mowag, a manufacturer of light tactical vehicles based in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. The second phase modernized the control systems of an IQ carburizing chamber furnace and two nitriding chamber furnaces, and expanded the automation platform already in place at the plant to support the new upgrades. The carburizing system now features a Protherm 500 programmable controller for monitoring and control of process parameters and a new electrical system. The nitriders are also outfitted with Protherm 500s, as well as H2Smart™ hydrogen analyzers and oxygen probes. Phase one of the project, which was completed in 2008, involved automating the nitriding cell consisting at that time of four furnaces with the implementation of Protherm 9800 production management software. The software application gives users online access to real-time data from the furnace control systems, and enables users to manage all devices, view and analyze historical data from each furnace, and monitor and address alarms." May 26/11 Ald Thermal Treatment/Port Huron, Michigan. There once was a Dana facility in Glasgow, Kentucky, USA that just a few short years ago purchased the latest and greatest vacuum carburizing technology from ALD-Holcroft. The recession caused all suppliers in the auto industry to make some changes with the result that the Dana facility in Glasgow was drastically downsized and the heat treating equipment put on the auction block. However in what is a perfect fit ALD Thermal Treatment in Port Huron, Michigan came to an agreement with Dana before the auction and the entire 8 cell system will now end up at ALD TT in Port Huron. With the addition of this line the facility now has 38 chambers making it far and away the largest commercial vacuum carburizer in North America. May 25/11 Powdered Metal Awards. Metal Powder Industries Federation has released their list of winners for powdered metal design. The edited version is below and represents some of the larger heat treaters in the world. Last week the assets of GM Ypsilanti were auctioned off over a period of 4 days. While demand for good used heat treating equipment is very strong these days surprisingly enough we have been told that the vast bulk of the heat treating equipment did not sell. The reason given was that this was generally older equipment with a very high removal cost. Included in the equipment that did not sell were several single row pushers (not much of a surprise there) and some "Super 30" lines of the older vintage with single quench cylinders which again are generally not in high demand. What did sell were several Induction systems which are always hard to find on the used market. These went to a combination of used equipment dealers and end users. May 24/11 Joplin, Missouri Tornado. What a disaster in Joplin as you can see from the press report below. We know of 3 heat treaters in Joplin, FAG Bearings (although I don't know for sure that this plant still heat treats), Modine Manufacturing and commercial heat treater Trojan Heat Treat. We have tried several times to get in touch with Trojan with no success, we can only hope it is just phone lines down. May 24/11 "JOPLIN, Mo., - At least 89 people have died in a monster tornado that left a path of destruction nearly a mile (1 km) wide through the heart of Joplin, Missouri, and directly hit the small Midwestern city's main hospital, local officials said on Monday. U.S. weather officials said the tornado that hit at dinnertime on Sunday may have been the single deadliest in the country since 1953. Rescue crews from throughout the region worked all night and into Monday morning in the town of about 50,000 people, searching for 8 anyone still alive in the rubble. An unknown number of people were injured and officials said they expected to find more bodies as they dig through collapsed homes and businesses. The tornado blew the roof off St. John's hospital where about 180 patients cowered, and some 2,000 homes and other buildings were destroyed. It flattened whole neighborhoods, splintered trees, flipped cars and trucks upside down and into each other." Thailand Heat Treat & Forging Seminar. The world keeps changing. Just a few years ago who would have thought that we would see a substantial and growing heat treating industry in Thailand. Below is more proof. Recently we had a brief item about how a bomb exploded in the parking lot of R & R Heat Treating in East Stroudsburg, PA. We see below that they have charged two fellows with this, sounds like they were just having some fun. May 23/11 "Two Stroudsburg men were indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges related to two recent pipe-bomb explosions in Monroe County, according to a press statement issued by the U.S. Department of Justice. Mathew VanOrden and Zachary Dougher, both 19, are accused of constructing pipe bombs and using them to blow up a mailbox and heavily damage a car in two separate incidents that occurred in March and April. According to the press statement the Justice Department issued Tuesday, VanOrden and Dougher are accused of using a pipe bomb to blow up a mailbox on Edgemont Road in Stroudsburg on March 22. They are also accused of detonating another such bomb in the parking lot of R&R Heat Treating Company on Stokes Avenue on April 6. That explosion, the statement said, "caused extensive damage to a car ... on the property." If convicted of the charges stemming from these pipe-bomb incidents, both men could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine." Solar Atmospheres of California. The note below gives you an update about the brand new commercial heat treating operation Solar has set up in California. Within a couple of weeks we will be touring this facility and will provide a number of photos of the plant. A reader in Thailand sent us this press release about Cat setting up a brand new manufacturing facility in Thailand and asked what we knew about their heat treating plans. We cannot comment except to say that from the limited information below we would assume that they will have substantial heat treating requirements. We will keep you posted. May 23/11 "Caterpillar to Open Facility in Thailand to Produce Underground Mining Machinery PEORIA, Ill. - Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) announced today that it plans to open a new manufacturing facility in Thailand. The company will break ground on the new factory in early 2011, with production scheduled to begin in late 2012. The facility will produce a full range of underground mining articulated trucks and loaders, which are used by Caterpillar customers around the world in hard-rock underground mining applications. "We continue to make strategic investments in our mining business to support our customers," said Chris Curfman, President of Caterpillar Global Mining and a Caterpillar Inc. Vice President. "We are pleased to announce our first manufacturing facility in Thailand, which will increase our capacity for our existing range of underground mining machinery, particularly as we sharpen our focus on meeting long-term customer demand in growth markets." The 60,000 square meter (645,000 square feet) factory will be located at the Hemaraj Rayong Industrial Land in Rayong Province. The new facility will increase the current production of underground mining products produced by Caterpillar in Australia and Brazil to respond to the growth in demand. Once the facility in Thailand is fully operational and at full capacity, it is expected to employ about 800 people. "The on-going infrastructure development plans for the world's growth markets combined with a long-term trend toward urbanization and growing wealth in emerging economies should continue to help drive long-term demand for commodities," said Steve Wunning, Caterpillar group president with responsibility for Resource Industries. "This facility will help to position Caterpillar for continued leadership in the mining industry." 10 Applied Process/Suzhou, China. Based in Michigan, USA commercial heat treater Applied Process has grown substantially over the years and this includes the company's facility in China. Below we have an update about a recent promotion at the China facility, comments about the electricity situation and a hint about their latest plant in Changchun, Jilin, China. In the photo below taken in late 2010 we see from the left Andy Chen of Powermax Furnaces, Stephen Gladieux, GM of AP Suzhou and Gord Montgomery, WG Montgomery Ltd. AP specializes in the ADI process and Austempering. May 19/11 “On April 25 2011 Stephen Gladieux was promoted to General Manager of AP Suzhou. He has managed the facility for over two years and has overseen a dramatic increase in sales as well as company development – he has well-earned this recognition. This promotion moves the holder of the GM title from the United States to China. This reorganization will improve efficiency during and after the impending capacity increase. Sales have been steadily ramping up at AP Suzhou and we are getting ready to install another AFC-Holcroft / Powermax 36-72-54 UBQA furnace line. This addition will give us much greater flexibility and increase our operating efficiency. The pie for ADI in China is definitely growing and we are seeing a lot of great new projects. It is an exciting time to be here. However, it is not without its challenges. Although the summer has not yet even begun Jiangsu province is seeing widespread electrical shutdowns. Several customers have been told to shut down two days a week with no end in sight. The word from local manufacturing groups is the same: there is already a major generation shortage and it will get worse. In our case, the electricity company actually suggested that we buy a generator, but quietly mentioned that we would still have to go through their official approval process before we could install it. Starting May first we were notified that at any time they might call us and we would have 30 minutes to drop our usage to 30kW or they might shut it all off. As an aside, 30kW won’t even run our quench agitators on one furnace. Let it be said that we are going o put in a generator soon. Nonetheless, there may be a silver lining to this cloud for heat treaters not using electric furnaces: we have received several urgent RFQs from heat treaters using electric furnaces who are over capacity because of the shutdown. In the midst of all this Jilin ADI, located in Changchun, Jilin, China, is on the verge of becoming a licensee of austempering technology from Applied Process. The final paperwork is pending. Jilin ADI will be hosting the annual Chinese ADI conference in conjunction with their open-house this August. They have quality equipment with a very large envelope size and will be a great addition to our family.” Alfe Heat Treating/AJ Foyt Racing. Yesterday we had a few thoughts about what in our opinion contributes to a well run captive or commercial heat treating operation. We received a response from an individual who at one time we rated as the most influential individual in the worldwide heat treating industry, Mr. John Hubbard who for a number of years was CEO of global heat treater Bodycote. John provided us with some flattering personal comments (not quite sure whether they are deserved) but of more importance he provided two ideas about what is important to any successful heat treating operation. May 18/11 "You are a heat treater. You may not actually heat treat but many of the executives of heat treat companies do not actually heat treat either. Your deep knowledge you shared with your readers is spot on and based on real experience. I endorse everything you said. Two items that I have observed; - maintenance of equipment is paramount. If your equipment does not run (reliably and produce quality results) it is useless. This ties to the second item; - heat treating service is a SERVICE business. Arrogance is rampant and so many service providers are best at making excuses rather than giving the customer their parts to specification and on time." What do Heat Treaters Get Paid/Alfe Heat Treating. For anybody with the tiniest bit of curiosity about what commercial heat treaters get paid (and who on earth is not curious about what others earn) we ran across a fascinating article summarizing what workers at Alfe Heat Treating get paid. The link below will give you all the details but to summarize three positions; General Managers earn between $86K USD and $108K USD, Sales Managers between $57K and $70K and Quality Assurance Managers between $48K and $58K. Alfe Heat Treating is far and away the largest commercial heat treater in the US when it comes to heat treating of aluminum and from our experience is a very well run operation. To see all the details we would suggest http://www.careerbliss.com/salary/alfe-heat-treating-salaries-1099875/. May 18/11 If I Were a Real Heat Treater. Over the years I have lost track of the number of captive and commercial heat treat operations I have seen around the world, from truly terrible to absolutely exceptional. From this experience I have gleamed a few rambling ideas that are applicable to both captive and commercial heat treaters when it comes to their success or lack of. May 17/11 1) You can't be all things to all people and this applies to both captive and commercial heat treaters. Far too often I see large captive operations specializing in one particular process (pushers or vacuums are good examples) with a couple of totally unrelated furnaces, seldom used sitting in the back. All this achieves is a dilution of experience and takes away from the company's core competency in heat treating. Stick with what you know and are good at and send the rest out to a commercial (I do understand that sometimes this can be a union issue in regards to outsourcing). The same holds true for commercial shops; in the larger heat treating areas such as Michigan, Ohio or Ontario most commercials are far better 13 served by concentrating on one or two particular processes rather than taking a shotgun approach to heat treating. Plus by specializing you have fewer competitors and higher margins-I hate seeing 4 shops competing for the same work all that is achieved is nobody makes any money. 2) Sizing of furnaces is crucial. Running furnaces partly full is a recipe for bankruptcy, the margins in heat treating are just not high enough to justify utilizing furnaces at anything less than full capacity or pretty darn close. Guess which captive and commercial operations survived the 2009 recession the best? Those with batch furnaces that could quickly adapt to rapidly changing volumes. This also explains why 30" X 48" X 30" batch IQ furnaces are back in vogue-they are flexible for those whose volumes are not 100% predictable and very few companies have the luxury of guaranteed volumes. 3) Gas over electric. The world is awash in natural gas and in virtually all areas is substantially cheaper than electricity and getting more so. Unless you don't have a natural gas option or are running vacuum or Induction heat treating systems I have no idea why anybody would choose electricity over natural gas. 4) Commercial heat treating is first and foremost a service industry. At the risk of offending all commercial heat treaters it is not unlike dry cleaning. I have been using the same dry cleaners for years, don't especially care for them on a personal level but as long as I get my dry cleaning when promised and it is done correctly I have absolutely no desire to look elsewhere. The same holds true for companies with heat treating requirements. Generally they have limited knowledge of heat treating and all they care about is a fast turnaround, at a competitive price with parts meeting specs. Virtually nothing else matters. 5) Blanket orders for commodity items. It is a genuine mystery to me why so many captive and commercial heat treaters are so reluctant to place blanket orders for commodity items such as alloy and oxygen probes. Haggle out a price for your estimated yearly requirements for any commodity item and you will save money guaranteed and also save yourself the labor of getting 3 quotes on every item. I know because for over 30 years I have sold commodity items and if you commit to me I will commit to you. 6) Scrap pricing. Know how many large companies still sell their scrap to the local scrap dealer down the street because they have been doing this for 20 years and it is the path of least resistance? Again from experience I can tell you quite a few and they are leaving in some cases big money on the table. Ask us what you should be getting for scrap and we will be glad to give you an idea. 7) Stick with what you know (closely related to our first thought). I have seen commercial shops that make money hand over fist at large volume, low margin, cheap and dirty work, I have also seen companies that have done extremely well at low volume, high margin jobs. Some commercials have thousands of customers at an average of a few hundred dollars/job others have a handfull of customers and also do very well. The moral of the story is find a niche, stick with what your know best and leave the rest to the other guy. 8) Margins on new equipment are low. This thought comes from selling new equipment for three decades, just because a new furnace is quoted at $1 million USD does not mean the mark-up is huge. 25 years ago yes but now if you can get a 5% discount consider yourself lucky. Offering a third of the asking price which I have seen from time to time over the years is merely wasting everybody's time and pissing off both sides. 9) Outsourcing. A hot topic for many years is the ideas of manufacturers sending their heat treating requirements to a commercial shop. I see no reason to delve into all the arguments on both sides-this has been beaten to death but I would suggest that any manufacturer with a small to medium size heat treating department take a long look at what the ACTUAL costs are and compare it to a commercial (notice the actual, many captives have little idea about what heat treating costs them as real estate and utilities are lumped in with the company as a while). A number of companies have been quite surprised over the years. 14 10) Cleanliness. 30 years ago heat treating was a pretty rough business, still is to some extent but the number of true dumps has dropped substantially. Sure it can be a very dirty business especially with oil quenching but at the end of the day a small amount of cleaning and fixing up makes an enormous impression on potential customers unused to heat treating and has a large emotional effect on employees. Odds & Ends. I see there is a large Ipsen bottom loading vacuum furnace being liquidated in CA. This is a model VVFC.BL with working dimensions of 60" X 72". While it was rebuilt in 2009 my impression was that Ipsen only built a few of this exact size all back around 1980. With an asking price of $495,000 US this would appear to us at first glance to be a lot of money for a 30 year old furnace. Granted Ipsen vacuums hold their value well but this is still a lot of money. I see Powerit Solutions has teamed up with Inductotherm to offer energy management systems. My impression of Powerit is that they offer a "peak demand" system which is a technology attracting a great deal of attention amongst heat treaters who use a lot of electricity (probably the best known around the world is Dibalog who has a banner ad on this site). I don't quite see the fit here as peak demand systems are not applicable to induction heating equipment (although vacuum melting would be a different story). Inductotherm is of course the largest supplier of Induction equipment in the world. Dan Krackovic has parted ways with New England Heat Treating Service a commercial heat treater which was one of the few new start ups in 2010. Lucifer Furnaces has shipped a 6"H x 6"W x 12"L box furnace to SunCoast Automation 2000, Inc., which designs and builds automated systems for various industries. May 16/11 Good People are Hard to Find. Going back a few months we had some thoughts about the difficulty in finding experienced people in the heat treating industry. Since that time the issue has only grown and virtually daily I hear of companies desperate to find good people. The two positions hardest to fill these days are good maintenance people with experience in the industry and salesman with a background in selling heat treating services. Both can almost right their own ticket these days. May 16/11 Therm-Tech of Waukesha Inc. Therm-Tech is one of the larger commercial heat treaters in the US and I know the company has been very busy of late. Consequently I was not surprised to see that they have added more space. May 13/11 "Therm-Tech expands with 65,000-square-foot lease Therm-Tech of Waukesha Inc., a heat treating company, recently leased a 65,000-square-foot building at 1511 Pearl St. in Waukesha. The facility will be added to Therm-Tech's four other facilities in the area. "This is a pure expansion move for them," said Jeff Hoffman, of Judson & Associates, who represented Therm-Tech in brokering the lease. The building owner was represented by Sam Dickman Jr. of The Dickman Company. "(Therm-Tech) touches so many different aspects of manufacturing," Hoffman said. "To hear that they are doing well is encouraging for the rest of the market." Alloy Theft. In reaction to our note of yesterday about alloy theft increasing we received several comments including this one from Dean Keal of Industrial Gas Engineering (furnace fans). May 13/11 "While we have our high alloy scrap inside a building with a monitored alarm, the lower alloy scrap was always an issue until we installed a heavy carbon steel cover for the container. The container itself is 15 large enough to make trying to tip it, etc., not practical, and the cover is heavy enough to require a forklift to move it. No scrap thefts since the cover was added. We also have a security camera trained on the container. This is certainly not the whole answer, but that heavy cover sure slows down the guys in a pick-up trying to grab scrap from targets of opportunity." Savage Precision Products/Wylie Texas. In the past week we have run across two companies in Texas adding aluminum processing furnaces, whether this reflects a greater need for aluminum processing or just a co incidence is hard to say. In this case a company by the name of Savage Precision Products http://savage-precision.com/index.php has just added a CEC drop bottom aluminum furnace purchased used from Quartz Mountain Aerospace in Altus Oklahoma. If the name QMA rings a bell it is because this was a start up aerospace company that closed down last year after having never run the furnace. Installation and start up of the furnace at Savage was done by Randy Rowland (Industrial Furnace Specialties) and Aerospace Technology Partners Inc. did the Pyrometry, Specification Training and Operator training. In the photo below you see Jimmy Morris of ATP on the right and WT Gardner Savage CEO (owner) on the left. If you have any questions about the installation we would suggest Jimmy Morris [email protected] May 12/11 Alloy Theft. As regular as clockwork when alloy prices go up so does alloy theft. Certainly theft can never be condoned but we can also see why it happens. A base tray for a 36" X 48" furnace made of HU material weighs roughly 315 pounds, as scrap it is worth several hundred dollars with very few questions asked at the local scrap yard which provides a strong incentive. The topic comes up today because theft is certainly on the rise and a large commercial heat treater in the US Midwest told us just yesterday that his plant was broken into just this past weekend and over 5,000 pounds of scrap was stolen. Over the years we have seen a commercial shop that stored all their scrap alloy in a fenced enclosure behind the plant, the thieves merely pulled the fence down with their vehicle and loaded up. Then of course there is the fake "pick up" which calls for more nerve. Several times over the years we have heard of individuals who show up with paperwork showing they are supposed to make a pickup of certain material-the paperwork is of course fake. One which was around for years was the donation to aboriginals to make jewellery, this was quite common but I haven't heard about it for some time. Of course one of the easiest is what I once saw at a very large captive, an employee on the night shift who for years was slipping a few base trays every month out the back door, never did catch the fellow either. The bottom line is that scrap alloy is almost impossible to trace and is worth a few dollars these days so be careful where and how it is stored as it makes an easy target. May 12/11 Ipsen Orders. New furnace builder Ipsen in Rockford, Illinois appears to be having a good year which mirrors what many are finding. May 11/11 16 "Ipsen USA receives 10 new equipment orders in the first 10 days of May including 7 Titan vacuum furnaces, 2 large TurboTreaters and 1 Aluminum Brazer. 8 of the 10 systems are for American customers showing USA manufacturing continues its expansion. One Southwest customer purchased 3 identical H2 Titans – two of which will ship still within May. We are very pleased to see our USA customers expanding at such a rapid pace and we have worked hard at Ipsen to grow our capacity so that we can easily keep up with this demand. For more information go to www.ipsenusa.com. Hard work wins." "L&L Special Furnace Co., Inc. has manufactured a multi purpose bench mounted box furnace. L&L has recently shipped 5 of these units to a major steel manufacturer in the south. The furnaces are used in the laboratory department for testing sample blocks of steel. This is a critical part of the testing and quality department to assure that manufactured products meet strict quality criteria. The Model GS1714 has internal dimensions of 17” wide by 12” high by 14-1/2” deep. It has an operating voltage of 208, 220, 240 volts single phase, 60 or 50 hertz. Included is a spring assist vertical lift door which allows for effortless loading and unloading even at high temperatures. The control is a proprietary Dynatrol program control standard with each unit. The Dynatrol has 6 programs with 8 segments each. A Bartlett 3 key overtemperature control is offered as an option. There is also an Industrial control option which includes a Honeywell DCP50 program control and a UDC 1200 overtemperature control and solid state relay. This allows for adjustable PID logic and finer temperature control around setpoint. The furnace is constructed from 3” light weight IFB firebrick, backed up with 2” of board insulation. The elements are supported in hard ceramic element holders. This allows for long element life and are easily replaced. The elements are located on both sides and the top and bottom. This allows for equal heat distribution from all sides. This element distribution has proven with the industrial control option to achieve uniformity gradient of ±7.5°F. Standard units include a sheathed thermocouple, a slot in the door for access into the furnace, a bench mounted powder coated CNC machined case, ceramic hearth plate with standoffs, a door limit switch that turns the power to the elements off if the door is opened, on/off toggle switch with control fusing and a power plug. Optional angle iron stand and a vent kit are available. The furnace is shipped by common carrier on a skidded carton with foam in place packaging. L&L has standard units in stock available for same day shipment. Units with control upgrade or fan option usually ship within one to 2 weeks. L&L currently has over 400 units in service. This makes the L&L GS1714 a great choice for general purpose heat treating as well as high tech industrial applications." Last week the remaining equipment at the Ingersoll Rand facility in Athens, PA, USA was auctioned off. Of interest to us and our readers was the heat treat equipment which consisted of 2 electrically heated Super 30 Allcases and 1 gas fired unit. Our understanding is that all of the equipment was sold with all or most of it going to a used equipment dealer. With the shortage of good used Batch IQ equipment on the market we are certainly not surprised that the equipment sold 17 however from experience we can say that peddling electrically heated batch IQ furnaces is not an easy job due to the fact that most heat treaters prefer gas due to the lower operating costs. May 10/11 Odds & Ends. Recently we announced how "Gasbarre Products Inc.", had purchased new furnace builder J.L. Becker Company. As many are aware the J.L. Becker Company deals in both new and used equipment and we were curious as to whether Gasbarre was purchasing the used side of the company. According to these comments from Bill Gasbarre the answer is no. "The used furnace opportunities through the Becker organization is of much interest to us, even though we did not purchase the used furnace side of the business. The J.L. Becker Company will work closely with John Becker and his business, Heat Treat Equipment. J.L. Becker Company will recondition, modify and service the used equipment that Heat Treat Equipment sells. Generally, the value-added is of great benefit, a win-win for all parties. " Recently there was an announcement in one of the industry trade magazines about "RollsRoyce" opening a manufacturing facility in Virginia. We were curious whether this would include heat treating, the answer is no. "Lakeside Steel Inc. (TSX VENTURE:LS) ("Lakeside Steel" or the "Company"), a leading North American producer of OCTG casing and tubing, today announced that it will expand its previously announced new USD $7.5 million state of the art tubular end-finishing and heat treatment facility in Thomasville, Alabama, to add end-finishing and heat treatment processing capabilities for casing products." "Nickel pricing." With nickel pricing continuing to go up we are back to the "bad all days" when a quote for baskets (as an example) a couple of months old is out of date. When buying alloy I would suggest that you not use pricing a month or two old as you will be sadly disappointed. May 10/11 What do heat treaters do when they retire? In 1989 Mr. Soon and Freddie started a commercial Heat Treat www.TwinVac.com in Singapore. They had two Vacuum furnaces that shared pumps (hence the name TwinVac) and a small budget. Over the years the company has become and is the leading Vacuum Heat Treat in Singapore with Vacuum furnaces from VFS, Hayes, CHS Asia, Solar MFG, Abar, Ipsen and other equipment. This year Mr. Soon decided to retire and enjoy life; currently he is Traveling the world enjoying his passion for photography. Actually he is traveling around visiting old friends in the business and taking photos. We wish him all the best in retirement. We have to add that in the background is Randy Simmons of CHS Asia that we haven't seen in some time. May 9/11 Mr Soon and the CHS Asia sales Team Photo 18 Mr Soon and Singaporean Edmund Lim Boss JML Heat Treat Thailand MAGNA Mexico. Just last week we had a news item about how Magna Powertrain has a brand new plant in Mexico. This fits in very neatly with that news item. "MATTSA (AFC-Holcroft's partner in Mexico) recently reconditioned and commissioned three Holcroft pusher furnaces for MAGNA outside of Monterrey Mexico. Furnace #1 is a four-row Holcroft pusher and Furnaces #2 and #3 are three-row Holcroft units. The furnaces are equipped with state of the art controls provided by AFC-Holcroft and Super Systems Inc. In the photo, we have Damian Bratcher of Super Systems Inc. (USA), Miguel Angel Ramos Galicia of MAGNA and Salvador Alvardo of SSi Mexico. SSi Mexico will provide local calibrations and support for the ever growing Mexican market. Special thanks to our photographer, Jorge Gonzalez of MATTSA." May 9/11 Hi-Tech Metal Finishing/Denton, Texas, USA. It would certainly appear that Hi-tech Metal Finishing in Denton, Texas is getting into the heat treating business. The company currently offers Anodizing, Cadmium Plating, Stress Relieving, Black Oxide and a number of other associated metal finishing processes so expanding more into the heat treating business would make sense. Again we understand that the company recently bought a Large used Despatch Aluminum oven which came out of a captive aerospace heat treat in the US southwest that closed down not that long ago. Combine this and it looks like this well established company will probably be getting into Nadcap heat treating work which would be a natural progression from what they are now offering. May 6/11 Metlab/Wyndmoor, PA, USA. Commercial heat treater Metlab offers a bunch of different processes (which they point out in their press release) however we at "The Monty" think of them mainly for one reason-they have some of the largest pit furnaces in North America. Their press release today talks about a very interesting order they recently processed for "Machine Ways". Machine Ways by the way are rails or guides used on a variety of saws or other industrial equipment. May 5/11 "Metlab Supplies Precision Ground Machine Ways. Metlab has shipped Machine Ways used to guide the track wheels of a precision industrial aluminum machine used for cutting wing segments and fuselage frames for commercial and military aircraft. Metlab chose A-2 tool steel as a replacement for the original 19 cold fused flame hardened bi-metal steel design, which failed at the junction of the two dissimilar metals. The selection of through hardened A2 eliminates the need for complete replacement of the machine ways due to wear in service. The Machine Way consists of eleven 12 foot long bars connected end to end, 2" thick by 6" wide, match ground to ± 0.003" in length, ± 0.0005" in thickness, with a maximum joint gap < 0.004" between adjacent bars. The overall Machine Way is over 130' long when installed. Metlab was chosen to manage the entire project which involved partnering with the material supplier and grinding source to solve the unique problems presented by the Machine Way design. A2 tool steel needed to be obtained in the special length and size. Domestic material was purchased from the one source in Illinois which allowed for timely delivery. The bars were heat treated vertically in Metlab's unique 48" diameter by 16' long vertical pit furnaces under a protective atmosphere to ensure no decarburization or oxidation. The individual bars were straightened to less than 0.050" in special fixturing provided by Metlab. Precision drilled and tapped locating holes (over 24 on the length of each bar) needed to be placed in the bars before heat treating. The use of low expansion A2 selected by Metlab allowed for predictable compensation for movement during heat treatment. The finished bars were then precision ground. Metlab's expertise in overall project management, background in material selection, and experience with large shape heat treatment produced a dramatic improvement in the component without a sacrifice in the machine design. Metlab, based in Wyndmoor, PA is a specialized commercial heat-treating facility serving a domestic and international customer base. The company's broad range of precision thermal processing capabilities include normalizing, hardening and tempering atmosphere annealing, stress relieving, age hardening, carburizing, nitriding, and boronizing, particularly very large parts to very deep case depths." Shanghai Heat Treatment/Shanghai, China. September of last year we spoke about a number of commercial heat treaters in China, one of which was Shanghai Heat Treatment. We commented at the time about the tremendous growth in heat treating in the country (one fellow told us if you aren't doubling your sales every two years you are doing something wrong). Shanghai Heat Treatment is a perfect example of this. Are article just 8 months ago stated that this company had 4 plants with a new one coming on line shortly. Since this time the company has expanded and now has six locations in Shanghai 20 Jinshan,Shanghai Changning,Tianjin Binhai New Zone,Tianjin Beichen,Shanxi Province Taiyuan City and Dalian city of Liaoning Province and will later this year acquire two more in Changsha City, Hunan province and Shanghai Fengxian(near Shanghai Powermax Furnaces Co.,Ltd). All we can say is amazing. While we have no doubt but that the company must rank amongst the larger commercials in China we do not know whether they are amongst the 10 largest or not. Certainly in North America or Europe an eight location commercial operation would be considered very large. May 5/11 "Shanghai Heat Treatment/Shanghai, China. European and North American commercial heat treaters would be absolutely stunned by the and profit margins of commercial heat treaters in China. Europeans and North Americans both have gotten used to a mature industry with relatively modest growth and small margins over the past decade: compare this with the booming economy in China which has dragged heat treaters along with it. Shanghai Heat Treatment is probably an extreme example of the growth in commercial heat treating but it does give you a good idea. Founded in 1956 the company has an impressive history including an award from the Chinese government in 1979 for their work in the aerospace industry. The company has 4 plants in 3 provinces with a total of over 200 employees which includes a new facility in Taiyuan city in Shanxi province which will be opening shortly. In the photos below we are looking at the largest operation which was built in 2006. This location has over 100 employees and offers a wide variety of processing including their mainstay process-Induction (up to 7' diameter parts), complimented by batch IQ furnaces, pit furnaces (up to 8' diameter) and plasma nitriding. As far as relative size goes I would have to believe that Shanghai Heat Treatment is one of the largest commercials in China but as far as I have been able to find out there is no such thing as a "Top 10" list of commercial heat treaters for China. Growth for the company over the years has been tremendous with sales growing over 400% in just the past few years. The main reason? The fellow in one of the pictures below, Mr. Kent Zuo, CEO. September 7/10" Industrial Gas Manufacturer Orders Nitrex Metal Neutralizing Systems . Nitrex Metal (www.nitrex.com) shipped two pairs of ammonia (NH3) neutralizing systems to an industrial gases supplier in Asia for their newly-constructed facilities supplying high-purity bulk ammonia to the electronics industry for use in light emitting diodes (LEDs) production. This is the first major application outside of the field of heat treating using Nitrex neutralizing systems for emission control. Each supplied pair consists of a primary and a secondary IN-1000 high-efficiency neutralizer for increased reliability of operations. Under normal operation, the primary unit operates as the on-line neutralizing system, and during periods of higher demand or in the event of failure, the secondary neutralizer will support the critical flow for 24/7 uptime. Each IN-1000 is rated for a capacity of 2120 cubic feet per hour (1000 liters per minute). ABOUT NITREX METAL INC. May 5/11 21 Ipsen Road Show. One of the more interesting marketing concepts we have run across is the Ipsen "Road Show". If you are not familiar with it new furnace builder Ipsen started this idea a good year ago. It involves one of Ipsen's "Titan" Vacuum furnaces traveling the USA on an 18 wheeler where it can be hooked up and demonstrated in a customer's parking lot. We have no idea whether this has resulted in any sales but the idea appeals to us. Here is the latest. May 4/11 "The TITAN Roadshow is back, featuring the mobile H2 TITAN Vacuum Furnace. So far the TITAN Roadshow has visited four midwest sites – Goodrich, Rockwell, Honeywell and Paulo Products – and is headed Northeast in early Summer. More exciting stops are planned mid to late Summer as well! Visit http://www.ipsenusa.com/titan/roadshow.html to register to see the TITAN Roadshow when it comes to your area!" Chrysler Detroit Axle Plant. Friday, March 25, 2011 was the end of the line for one of the oldest automotive facilities in North America, the Chrysler Detroit Axle plant which was opened in 1917. The remaining equipment which includes a number of Gleason press quench units, Holcroft carburizing furnaces and Eitel straightening presses will be auctioned off June 21st to Thursday, June 23rd at 10am EDT each day. By any measure this was a very large captive heat treater and the plant's production and heat treating was shifted to a new facility in Marysville, Michigan which will be run by a German firm working with Chrysler. Our understanding is that the German firm is ZF Industries. When the Marysville plant opened it included several pusher lines built by Williams Industrial Service Inc., which was roughly a $9 million USD investment. May 3/11 22 Curtiss Wright/Metal Improvement Company. Below are two excerpts from the recent financial results of Curtiss Wright Corporation, of which The Metal Improvement Company is a division. Metal Improvement is one of the larger commercial heat treaters in North America and what we see below is that they are one of the star divisions of Curtiss Wright. May 3/11 "Sales of $462 million in the first quarter of 2011 increased $20 million, or 5%, compared to the prior year period. The sales increase was primarily generated by the Metal Treatment and Motion Control segments, which grew 17% and 8%, respectively. Sales within the Flow Control segment were essentially flat compared to the prior year period. Our 2010 and first quarter 2011 acquisitions, entirely within the Motion Control segment, contributed $7 million in sales to the current year Metal Treatment - Sales for the first quarter of 2011 were $63 million, an increase of $9 million, or 17%, compared to the prior year period. We continue to see positive signs and increased demand for our products and services across all major lines of business and markets, most notably for shot peening, heat treating, and coating services to commercial markets. Operating income in the first quarter of 2011 was $10 million, an increase of $4 million, or 67%, compared to the prior year period. Operating margin amounted to 16.0%, a 470 basis point improvement over the prior year. This significant improvement was primarily driven by higher sales volumes resulting in favorable absorption of fixed overhead costs, mainly in our shot peening and heat treating businesses." Gasbarre/JL Becker Company. Earlier this year Gasbarre Products (new heat treating furnaces with an emphasis on the powdered metal industry) acquired the JL Becker company also a manufacturer of new furnaces. We were curious how this acquisition is going and William Gasbarre satisfied our curiosity with these comments about the acquisition. May 2/11 "Regarding our new acquisition of J.L. Becker, we are now in a strong position to supply heat treating manufacturers, be it captive or commercial, with quality equipment manufactured to their specific needs or growth. The thermal process product lines that Gasbarre Products can offer through J.L. Becker, C.I. Hayes, and Sinterite Products are numerous, will carry the Gasbarre production philosophy for highest quality, on-time delivery, and support service of equipment that has been manufactured in this industry since Hayes started 106 years ago, but with today’s technology. As far as I know, we are the only manufacturers that can boast the number of products, services, and industries that we supply. The future will confirm that. Our plan is to leave Becker as a separate manufacturing company within the Gasbarre organization, but with the same control structure and strategic planning with the Gasbarre team. Our sales strategic planning, with teams from all three furnace companies with corporate personnel involved, has commenced. Strategies are in place. Starting May 3rd, Tom Keane from Birmingham, Alabama will join Becker in Plymouth, Michigan as our new General Manager (not a replacement, but a new resource) to oversee daily operations, communication with all Becker departments as well as customer support and smooth manufacturing flow. Tom comes with over 25 years as an operations manager with quality and engineering backgrounds. He knows the J.L. Becker products, company, and is prepared to take on the daily challenges of what it takes to provide high quality Becker furnaces to heat treating customers. He comes from a premier manufacturer of helical anchor products and hardware for the power distribution and civil construction industries. 23 In June, we will be making another announcement within the Gasbarre Furnace Group. Plans are being finalized now. Simply put, we are very excited about the future. We look forward to continuing to supply the many industries and customers we have for so many years, and to grow our customers. Our strength lies in our inter-communication, which is key. As you know, we love to partner with companies to develop new concepts for our presses, furnaces and ancillary equipment. We are doing this right now – working with a customer who has Sinterite and Hayes equipment, yet wants to add a Becker product with a major component developed by the Gasbarre Press group. Thinking outside the box is thinking ahead in today’s challenging business. William R. Gasbarre, Sales & Marketing Director, Gasbarre Products, Inc." Magna Powertrain/Syracuse, NY, USA. Later on this year (date to be announced) the remaining assets of Magna Powertrain in Syracuse, NY will be auctioned off. Originally called New Venture Gear and New Process Gear this automotive transmission and powertrain facility has a long history. At one time it was part of Chrysler and during it's heyday it was ranked by "themonty.com" as one of the largest captive heat treating departments in NA with 13 multirow pushers and a host of other types of furnaces all under 1.8 million square feet. Unfortunately the world keeps changing, especially the automotive world and in 2010 the decision was made to close the facility with production being moved to Mexico. Some of the equipment was moved to Mexico and we assume all the rest is being sold at auction. While the equipment when purchased was top of the line this was sometime back and as there is very little demand for large multirow pushers I do not see the furnaces being sold for a great deal. May 2/11 Close Call for Advanced Heat Treat. One of the larger commercial heat treaters in North America is Waterloo, Iowa based Advanced HT with 4 locations around the US. According to the report below the Cullman, Iowa facility was almost hit by one of the tornados which have recently been sweeping through the south eastern US. May 2/11 "WATERLOO --- Advanced Heat Treat's plant in Cullman, Ala., was spared when a deadly tornado tore through the town Wednesday, causing extensive damage. Gary Sharp, CEO of the Waterloo-based company, said a widespread power outage forced the company to shut down, but the building suffered no specific damage. "The tornado went right in front of it, though," Sharp said. Buildings on the other side of a highway suffered extensively, according to Sharp, but details even by Thursday afternoon were still sketchy. "We're having trouble communicating," he said. Information primarily was coming in by text messages. "We expect to be shut down for up to a week. It just depends on how they repair the infrastructure," Sharp said. Mayor Max Townson described the disaster as one of the worst ever in Cullman. "But Cullman is a city of character ... and I think we can get this cleaned up and get through it," he told the Cullman Times. Advanced Heat Treat offers specialty heat treating for the automotive and aerospace industries. The company started building the plant in Cullman about four years ago, and it has about a dozen employees. Coincidently, an employee from Alabama was in Waterloo for training when the tornado hit. He kept in close contact with family members. Sharp said the man's relatives and all of the company's employees escaped the storm's wrath without injury. The Cullman Times reported widespread devastation to downtown businesses and local landmarks, including the Cullman County Courthouse. Virtually the entire county was without electricity, and that may be the case for up to nine days. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency reported two fatalities in Cullman County." 24 Disclaimer.
