President’s Message
If you like the paper piecing technique this month is for
you. Pam Morrison is our speaker and has all sorts of paper piecing techniques to show you and share with you.
We will also hold our Annual General Meeting which
should not take up too much time as there are no changes
to our Constitution.
When you come through the door please visit the Community Projects Table. Fern and her committee will have kits
available for you to take home and bring back completed
in June or September. The Community Projects Committee will be sharing some demos for easy block ideas between 7:00 – 7:30 and during our Coffee Time.
Don’t forget to bring in your President’s Challenge next
month. The museum’s website is
www.DufferinMuseum.com in case you need some ideas
for your challenge. Be sure to visit
www.stitchesacrosstime.com also. The challenge does not
have to be fabric related. I’m looking forward to seeing
your creative work!

Hi there,
Last week I had surgery for Breast Cancer
at the Orangeville Hospital and as I was ready to
leave a nurse gave me a foam pillow in a case that
was made by your group.
Just wanted to say "Thank You" - such a
wonderful idea and to let you know I have
used it every day since I came home and it really
helps both physically and mentally.
Sincerely,

Community Projects Block
Congratulations are in order to the members of Dufferin Piecemakers Quilting Guild….you
have successfully donated 44 quilts to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
The quilts were delivered to Country Concessions on Tues April 26 and from there they will
be delivered to Northcott Silk who is shipping all the quilts to Japan.
May activities:
There will be NO work bee in the afternoon prior to the guild meeting. At the meeting, we will have a special
display of ideas and fabric for members to use in making blocks to build up our quilt inventory.
Our usual work bee will be held at Cobwebs & Caviar on May 24. If you are trained on the mid-arm quilting
machine, please join us at 10:30. We will be loading and quilting one of our community project quilts and it is a
perfect opportunity to practice on the machine. In the afternoon, there will be other projects to work on as
well. If possible, please bring your sewing machine and sewing kit.
Thank you to everyone for your contribution to the community projects.
Your community projects committee: Fern Pugh, Jan Dickson, Mary Lynne Simpson, Marilyn Copeland, and Marie Tupling
Crieff Spring Retreat 2011
Our spring retreat was a resounding success and as usual we all had a wonderful weekend of sewing fun and camaraderie. There is
just something special about the bonding that happens at retreat. The weekend always seems to go by too fast!
Our many newcomers to retreat all commented that they had a wonderful time and not only had fun but accomplished a lot of sewing!!
On Friday night for our community quilt block project, Sue Van Zant was good enough to step in for Joannie who was absent. Sue put together a really slick
block that resulted in two good sized blocks per person. Everyone went away with a quick new ‘stash buster’ technique under their belt and a wonderful feeling of community support for their contribution.
As for the take home project I kinda dropped the ball on this one and while a few people made up beautiful tote bags the instructions were a little vague and
a bit of a challenge for some …. Better luck next time!! A very special thank you to Beckie Shaw for the wonder tote she made from upholstery ends and
presented to me… I will cherish it always. Also, thank you to Nanette for making up a wonderful snappy little wallet for both myself and Joannie.
With the absence of our special and very exuberant friend Joan Lorbach the retreat was somewhat quiet . However, she really was present in many ways
because we collected Easter Bunny treasures for her and many of the girls made special sewing themed pillow cases just for her, including one that we each
signed with special messages of encouragement.
Of course there were wonderful prizes to be won with the many games and draws which only slightly interfered with the sewing marathon we always find
ourselves embroiled in at retreat. A very special thank you goes out to a few of the quilt shops that donated wonderful prizes to our retreat weekend. Country Concessions donated a terrific book which was won by Candice Kitchen. Alice’s Quilt Shoppe donated 4 fat quarters of their newest fabric collection
which was won by Sue Pirie. Cobwebs & Caviar donated chocolate bars with coupons for ‘buy 1 metre get 1 free’ for each participant of the retreat.
According to our survey results the Easter Bunny visits were well received by everyone as each group came up with their own unique way of sharing a bit of
themselves with their fellow retreat companions. We all went away with special treats and unique blessings as the fun of sharing and giving became a part of
the excitement.
Many thanks go out to the retreat committee as a whole and of course to the people at Crieff Hills Conference Centre who always accommodate our needs.
Regards, Yvonne Conway

Trip to Montana or Wal-Mart Wing It Trip
Part 1, The Trip Out
Since this is my second last newsletter as editor, I thought I would take liberties and share our recent adventure to Montana. Why
Montana? No, not a quilt shop hop, but to get a new lift system (legs) for our truck camper and the company that makes the system is
based in Kalispell Montana . We had an appointment for April 11 th. Does anyone know just how far it is to Kalispell, Montana? Neither
did we :) Our goal each day was to get as far as we could and still enjoy the scenery and the travel. The thing about pre-season camping - NOTHING is open! We knew this might be a problem at times but hoped we could find the odd one open so we could have electrical hook up and possibly water. We thought it was still too cold, especially at night to fill the water tank, so we took a refillable jug and
many, many bottles of water.
Hopefully you won’t be too bored with the saga of …
Our trip: which began Apr 6th, with a flat on the passenger side front tire, with the camper already loaded
on! A couple of hours delay, drop the dog at the kennel and we were off. Our first night, arrived late, “open
all year” Michigan Allendale KOA. Do it yourself, pick out your spot, fill out the form, drop through slot with
payment. 15amp electrical, no water, no sewer, no advertised WIFI and no cell phone reception! Should have
gone to Wal-Mart! Day 2: Indiana, into Illinois. Chicago. OMG!!! The speeds! Thought I said it in my head
but I’m told I said “You’re going to kill us!!” We think this is where we lost a hub cap. Checked out another
“open all year” campground and spent the night at Wal-Mart in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. (free and someone is there to welcome you!)
Gained 1 hour. Day 3: Sunshine! Saw a herd of buffalo and a male and female bald eagle, amazing. Reached Fargo, N.D. mid afternoon
and there was a lot of water. The Red River was flooding its banks. Saw a golf course and a rest area mostly under water, a port-atoilet 1/2 under water and one section of hwy down to one lane because they were sand bagging the other. Wal-Mart in Jamestown for
the night. Day 4: Cold and foggy, with temp. dropping. Changes in terrain now, farming to hilly. Saw another herd of buffalo and the
painted canyon, beautiful! Gained another hour. Into Montana where fuel is scarce on I94! Chose a Super 8 motel in Bozeman, Montana for the night, in dire need of a shower!! Wow, hot water from a tap, not from a kettle and a little cup! Day 5: Cold and a few
snow flakes. Speed limits 75mph! Destination Stable Lift and their campground. Scenery is now rolling hills, ranches, black angus
beef, whole lotta nothin’. Did see a cowboy riding the range! Yee Haw! Kalispell and Stable Lift “factory” (a
tin garage/shed?!) The campground, ha ha, one spot of grass with a picnic table. We opted for Wal-Mart!
Day 6: Back at 8:00am, and leave the camper and truck while we spend the day in Kalispell with a rental car;
shopping (found Joann’s), lunch and oh look a hobby shop next door, laundry (Larry left to find NAPA Auto),
Baskin & Robbins, back to pick up camper, return rental, then to a service station and oh look a quilt shop!
Too bad we found it ½ hour before closing! It was too much for me to take in after a long day. I left with
two small jig saw puzzles. Well one has a quilt in the picture! Wal-Mart for night where we discover the
fridge had been turned off and the frozen yogurt was not so frozen. Day 7: Destination Linden, Alberta to stay with friends. Hwy 93
North out of Kalispell, craaaapy and comes up in BC. Stopped at border, paid the duties, and off we went. No matter how many times
you see them, the mountains are awesome! Stopped in Crowsnest pass for lunch, and a break .. Tim Horton’s! There is a dearth of Tim’s
in the US! What a view of the mountains from their window! Made it to our friends place by 4:00pm. For three nights we had a bed in
a house but even better … a shower, running water, hot water, simple pleasures. Day two of our stay with them, 6” of snow, another
OMG! Oh, and I did get to go shopping at the … Linden Quilt Shop, woo hoo! Day 10: Short hop to Calgary for a visit with my brotherin-law. Opening day for Calgary West Campground, checked in, made a run into Calgary, couldn’t find parking, got lost, back to campground, off load camper, back to Calgary, off load me, Larry found parking, at last- a visit. Spent the next day (-3C, icicles on front of
camper) in Calgary as well, and as we were heading back that evening, you guessed it, it was snowing. We debated loading, didn’t. Next
morning, brushed snow out of truck bed, off camper, off slide out so we could bring it in, filled jug with water, truck in four wheel
drive, then on the road heading home.
And if I haven’t bored you to death so far, Part 2, “The Trip Home” will be in the June Newsletter.
