Now what? Take a deep breath, drop those feed dogs and start machine quilting! In this class, you’ll learn to free-motion quilt some basic designs including curved lines, meandering, echoing, and loops. We’ll also discuss needles, threads, batting and tension. This is a Fat Quarter friendly quilt, twin size, with enough leftover fabric to make a smaller version as well. This is a class for advanced beginners, but we will be reviewing rotary cutting skills. For each block a center square is surrounded by “logs”, very reminiscent of a traditional log cabin block, but with an updated feel. Set them on point with side triangles in your choice of sizes. All it takes is a little fabric folding and fussycutting combined with a dab of glue and some stitching, and voila! – you have a cathedral window. We will cover several machine appliqué methods including both raw edge and turned edge. You will learn to trace the patterns, cut, and fuse them and use your machine to finish the edge. We can no longer resist the pull of English Paper piecing, and have become Smitten with the pattern designed by Lucy Carson Kingwell, daughter of famous Moda designer Jen Kingwell. Lucy is famous for her beautiful scrappy, hand pieced quilts. Three of us in the shop have begun our own Smitten quilts, each measures 48” x 61”, and each using our own choice of favorite fabrics and styles. Using a riot of fabrics is key, and you can use your stash or add new selections to it. We’ll meet monthly to share the ins and outs of English Paper Piecing and enjoy the resurgence of the Slow Quilting movement together. With each month’s pattern, you receive a short biography of a legendary actress who lived and worked during one of the most glamourous times in Hollywood history. The finished quilt measures 79" x 79". The program begins May 1, 2016. Cost: $29.98 per month for 7 months includes the pattern and the fabric for your quilt top and binding. Shipping is extra for those electing to participate by mail. Page 3 Quilts for Kids On the first Tuesday of each month a group of charity-minded quilters meets at PQW to sew together for the organization, Quilts for Kids. Quilts are given to children who are ill, abused, or in difficult situations who could use the comfort of a quilt made for them. Experienced quilters only, please. Please bring your lunch or snack, your machine and sewing supplies. Quilt kits will be provided. Please register ahead so we know how many to expect. Let’s say that a class you're interested in requires rotary skills, and you’re still snipping along with scissors. Well a 1-hour private class will bring you up to speed. Or say that you really want to get the hang of paper-piecing or some other skill. Or maybe our classes just don’t fit in your schedule. Talk to any one of us and we’ll find you the right person at the right time to teach you what you need to know. $25 per hour per person. Policy for class registration You must pay for a class in full in order to receive the class supplies list and to reserve your place. You may register by phone, on line, or in the store. If you need to cancel, please do so at least 10 days prior to the first class in order to receive a full refund. If an emergency arises and you cancel less than 10 days before the first class, but at least one day before, a class certificate will be issued. Please use this for emergencies only as late cancellations can be problems for us. All books and patterns and some special tools required for a class can be purchased at a 20% discount after paid registration. Check that class enrollment minimums have been met before purchasing supplies. Modern quilting is a new and rapidly growing movement in the quilting world. Kids’ Beginner Sewing Class This year Pennington Quilt Works is offering a sewing camp for kids filled with fun and creative projects. We will focus on learning basic sewing skills and build on those skills as the week progresses. The goal of the class is that each student will go home everyday with a completed project and a sense of accomplishment. By the end of the week she or he will possess the skills and confidence to sew gifts for friends and family, decorative pillows and other projects inspired by creativity. Open to ages 9 to 12. Kids’ Sewing Masters Camp For the young sewist who is ready for more advanced projects we are offering a master’s series. The students will make a pair of pajamas bottoms, pillowcase, drawstring bag and bedroom banner. We will focus on precision and advanced finishing techniques. By the end of the week the student will be comfortable reading a pattern, cutting out projects and adding personalized touches. Open to ages 10-13. Then we’ll schedule 2 private hours with you and a Bernina educator to begin exploring with you all you’d like to learn. From there you’ll be guided into more private or small group classes to go as far as you’d like. Stitching Fun Decorative stitching, memory, alphabets, combi-mode and special techniques. For all electronic machines. Quiltmaking Skills Special attention to those features on your Bernina that are especially useful in quilting. Piecing, machine appliqué, free-motion quilting, and using the walking foot are covered. We’ll include the BSR if you have one. Embroidery Basics Learn to find, set up, and manipulate designs, and stitch them out with success. Unravel the mysteries of threads, stabilizers, and hooping. For machines with embroidery units. More Embroidery Techniques Learn to do embroidered appliqué (our favorite!) while you dig deeper into your machine’s embroidery features and perfect your skills. Take basics class first. My Bernette When you purchase your Bernette from PQW, we will arrange your individual or small class sessions to fit your schedule. Software Sampler Club 2016 A monthly club that will explore Bernina Embroidery Software 7. Each month we will watch a video presented by Amanda Whitlatch of Bernina of America, covering some component of Software 7. You will receive a CD that will include a PowerPoint of the video, written instructions and project suggestions. Then we will walk through the lessons ourselves. Bring your laptop with the software installed, if you have it. But this is also a great opportunity to see what Bernina Embroidery Software 7 is all about even if you do not yet own it. Don’t have a Bernina? That’s okay. This software will convert designs to many formats All About Embroidery Club A monthly club that focuses on machine embroidery. Each month we will watch a video presented by Kay Hickman of Bernina of America. You will receive a CD that includes a PowerPoint of the video, a tips and tricks handout and a featured embroidery design. We will have machines set up for you to try the featured technique. Open to all, but if you are a Bernina user please bring an oval hoop and its grid. Thanks to its variable setting options, both pleat depth and frequency of gather can be varied. This means that Ruffler # 86 can set a pleat with every stitch, every 6th stitch, or every 12th stitch, as you choose. There’s also the option of sewing without pleating, without replacing the presser foot. Gathering is performed by the special gathering blade, which causes the up-and-down motion of the needle to catch a bit of fabric each time and slip it under the needle.
