News from the Customer Club
After the summer we will be introducing
a number of new products that you, as a
member of our Customer Club, will enjoy. The
minimum requirement for becoming a member in the future will be a subscription. If you
are subscriber, you will automatically become
a member of the Bronze group.
Individual purchases in addition to subscriptions will also add points to your balance,
as will a long-term customer relationship.
Strong incentives
We usually talk about three strong incentives
for becoming a subscriber: you automatically
receive the most recent stamps and stamp
products in your mailbox, we pay for shipping
and invoicing and you receive Bulletin five
times a year at no extra cost.
We have several interesting subscriptions to
choose from. They can be found on pages
12-13.
New levels
We are also changing the levels for membership in the Gold and Silver groups. To become a Gold member, you need 11,000 points,
and to become a Silver member you need half
of this, in other words 5,500 points. As mentioned, you automatically become a Bronze
member when you sign up for a subscription.
We are also changing the period during
which you can gather points to October 1-September 30. One important reason behind this
change is that we would like to have as upto-date information as possible about which
member group you belong to before we send
out our Christmas gifts.
Welcome to the Postal Museum day of issue May 4. 2016. Buy the new stamps and discuss
subscription with us. Photo: Matton Subscription.

BULLETIN MAY · 2016
Stockholm expert and photographer Jeppe Wikström has captured the
true spirit of Gamla stan for the current stamps. The aerial photo of the
entire island acts as an introduction, and with the four close-ups he
invites the viewer on a trip to the well-known areas of Skeppsbron,
Stortorget, Brända tomten and the
streets around Storkyrkobrinken,
with Stockholm Cathedral in the
background.
Gamla stan
– the heart of Stockholm
Gamla stan, with its historical ties and special
atmosphere, is an irresistible magnet for
visitors from near and far, a must for every
Stockholm tourist.
There is a long list of guides and tips that
share the places and streets that everyone
absolutely must visit.
Greetings from Gamla stan
The Gamla stan stamp booklet also offers tourists a guide to some of the must-see areas on
the island. And what is a better end to a walk
among the streets and squares than to send a
greeting from Gamla stan, franked with one of
its own stamps.
The proofs for the stamps are photos by
Jeppe Wikström, a well-known photographer.
The first photo in the booklet is an aerial photo
that captures the entire island.
“From the air it is very apparent why Gamla
stan is located where it is located. A small
island that is only five hundred meters wide;
an island located precisely where the big lake
meets the sea,” he says.
Both small town and great power
The text for the Gamla stan collector’s sheet is
signed by Jeppe Wikström. Order the Collector’s Sheet using the included order form and
receive a copy of the text that he has written.
Here is a sample:
“Gamla stan is exactly what its name says
- an old town. It is a jumble of buildings and
narrow streets and exudes not only the feeling
of a small town but also that of power. It was
here that the streets ran with blood after the
Stockholm Bloodbath, it was here that Gustav
Vasa galloped astride his horse, If it were possible to hear the beats of history they would
resound throughout its alleyways.
A living district
But instead what visitors hear is a completely
different sound. Vehicular traffic is forbidden
on almost all of Gamla stan, which means that
it is possible to hear feet on the cobblestones,
the brrrrring of bike bells, conversations and,
not infrequently, music from an open window.”
The five beautiful and evocative photos,
which is the basis for the stamps, have been
reinterpreted artwork by Martin Mörck. With
his vast experience of the stamp design, he
has created dense and visually exciting images
of Gamla stan.

in Stockholm
Gamla stan is the heart of capital and where Stockholm was founded in the
Middle Ages. The motifs on the new maximum cards complement the stamp
illustrations. The cards depict the changing of the guards at the Royal Palace,
Stortorget, building facades along a street, Skeppsbron and parts of the island
from a bird’s-eye view. The photographs were taken by Jeppe Wikström.

This year’s summer stamps for domestic greetings sent while on
vacation, at the shore or swinging in a hammock share the buzzing
activity at the shore, both on land and in the water.
The stamps are issued in a booklet of ten
selfadhesive stamps with five motifs
as well as in two coils with one
motif each.
Lazy days at the
shore lend a feeling
of vacation to all
summer greetings
When summer has arrived, many people want
to head down to the shore to relax, read, play,
swim and maybe even do some fishing.
Summer greetings
And they love to share their experiences from
their vacation and throughout the summer
with their friends and family. What better way
to frank a post card from a vacation than with
summer stamps that depict life at the shore as
an inspirational motif..
Postcards and letters
Summer is the time of year when many people
choose post cards and letters to share their
experiences from new places, meetings and
events. A post card sent when travelling during the summer is a simple yet personal way
to send a greeting and share a fun experience.
So start writing!

We have closed the factory,
gone as far as we can go
Far from traffic, to lick
our wounds
We have our own house in

Meet Lisa Rydell, the artist who suggested
that the Pride flag should be on a stamp
and was given the assignment to design
the motif.
Photo: PostNord.
”The rainbow flag is so
obvious on a stamp”
When Lisa Rydell was given the assignment to
design the Pride stamp, the typography was
the major challenge.
“The flag is just as it was since 1979 when
the six colors were established and could not
be changed. After a lot of discussions, we
landed on a solution where the texts SVERIGE
and BREV rest on the lower part of the red and
orange bands. The lines add a calming, stable
influence to the composition,” she says.
Send love greetings
Stamps are a reflection of today’s Sweden,
where diversity is a given. Therefore, PostNord
issue a stamp with Pride flag.
– By issuing a postage stamp with Pride
flag, we want to stress the equal value and
strength of people’s unique characteristics and
differences. Pride flag has to our knowledge
never been reproduced on a stamp
before, and it feels
great that it is now
possible to send
love greetings with
Pride flag, says Per
Ljungberg, head of
the Communications
Department,
PostNord Sweden.
Photo: PostNord.
Early stamp interest
In the summer of 2014, Lisa Rydell took one of
her creative, long walks at home and came up
with the idea of a stamp with the Pride movement’s famous symbol as a motif.
“It just hit me that the rainbow flag would
be the perfect motif on a stamp. I sent in the
proposal to PostNord and it was accepted.
That I was then given the opportunity to work
with the design was a pleasant surprise.”
Her interest in stamps as a piece of art
and message conveyor emerged 20 years
ago when she was studying graphic design at
Beckmans College of Design.
“Our teacher gave us an assignment to design a stamp. It was fantastically inspiring and
educational. Making a stamp was immediately
added to my bucket list,” she says.
Culture and fashion
Eventually, Lisa Rydell became a freelancer,
and she had a long assignment at Kulturhuset
in Stockholm, where she was responsible for
the design and production of the exhibition
posters.
During her career she continued to take on
design jobs for the cultural sphere, including
book design.

The Pride Flag
– its history and
colors
The rainbow flag was officially introduced
at San Francisco Pride in 1978 and it quickly
became very popular among the city’s gay
communities. Back then, the flag, which was

“The original proof for
the Gamla stan stamp
that was issued in 1953
for Stockholm’s 700th
anniversary is an ink
drawing that comes
from our philatelic
collections,” says
Kajsa Lemon, head of
the philatelic collections
at Postmuseum.

Gamla stan on stamps
– a 90-year history
Gamla stan in Stockholm is being depicted on stamps once again. Its premier as a motif in 1924
captured the island’s skyline, including several of its well-known buildings, for one of the stamps
celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union.
Kajsa Lemon, who is responsible for Postmuseum’s philatelic collections including stamps,
test prints, sketches and proofs dating from 1855 to today, is presenting here several of the
Gamla stan stamps.
“Gamla stan and parts of the island have been depicted on stamps on many occasions. I have
selected several of the stamps that capture the essence of Gamla stan and are related to the
new stamps that show Gamla stan from a bird’s eye perspective,” she says.

“A stamp series was
issued in conjunction
with the Universal Postal
Union’s congress in
Stockholm in 1924. The
motif on the öre denominations is a stylized
image of Stockholm that
centers around Gamla
Stan. The stamps were
engraved and printed in
one-color recess.”
“One of the stamps
issued in 1953 for
Stockholm’s 700th anniversary shows Gamla
stan as it is seen from
Saltsjön. Skeppsbron is
crowded with boats and
the Swedish national
emblem (three crowns)
can be seen among the
towers. Mark Sylwan designed the stamp based
on a wooden engraving
from the 1600s.”
“Gamla stan as seen
from straight above was
one of the stamp motifs
in the Swedish Maps
booklet issued in 1989.
The proof was designed
by Magda Korotynska
and Ola Nyberg and
shows the island as it
appeared at the end of
the 1980s.”
“When Stockholm
celebrated its 750th
anniversary in 2002,
two stamps were issued
that were designed
and engraved by Lars
Sjööblom. The proof
was the Vädersolstavlan
oil painting, which was
painted in the first half
of the 1500s and is one
of the oldest depictions
of Stockholm.”
