Our relations observed the religious
ritual of fasting and worship for Thai
poosam and proceeded by walk from
Kundrakudi to Palani in a group of 400
persons with Kavadis – Decorated wooden
stick with two baskets carrying offerings
like milk for Lord Muruga.
The devotees gifted cooldrinks, drinking
water, biscuit packets, holy ash bag, prayer
books, rice flour balls, and towels to the
pilgrims near Saravana Poigai pond in
Kundrakudi.

Namadhu Chettinad magazine also took part in this
happening at it gives great pleasure to us.
From the early hours of morning on that day,
devotees thronged in strength in large numbers in
Kundrakudi. There were many vehicles that getting a
place to park them was scarce and the vehicles went
hither and thither to get a place. There was exhilaration
and a high degree of religious fervor, was evident
among each and every devotee on that day.
However, the paths to the Saravana poigai pond,
banks of the tank and in almost all places were littered
with the remains of food and other things used
and thrown out. The devotees did not mind it as an
obstruction and they were doing their duties praising
the name of the God. The proverb, “cleanliness is next
to Godliness” came to our mind suddenly.
The clean India scheme under the title “Swach
Bharat” is propagated and activities to enhance
cleanliness are being increased throughout India.
In such circumstances, an idea has been put forth
that cleaning work may be undertaken by Namadhu
Chettinad magazine joining hands with Kundrakudi
Madam and Kundrakudi Panchayat.
I wish to inform that after consultations with the
requisite authorities and responsible office holders, a
good and proper decision regarding the implementation of this proposal will be taken.

Ramanathan Ramkumar – The future star
of tomorrow.
Few in the history of Indian tennis
achieved international fame. Tennis is widely
considered a game of Europeans and to learn,
train and achieve glory is next to impossible
for the not so rich. But the above mentioned,
though born to middle class families, became
internationally famous sports persons by their
untiring efforts.
Among them Ramanathan Ramkumar
is the son of Ramanathan whose father
is Karaikudi Kumarappa chettiar and
Alagammai whose father is Kottaiyur Le. A.
Ru. Subramanian chettiar, at the young age
of 21 he is an internationally known tennis
hero. His family is called Na. Kuna. House in
Karaikudi. He belongs to the vairavan kovil
sect.
This young Tamil hero is achieving glory
for India in tennis. News reports on his

successes were widely circulated recently
in newspapers. On approaching him for
an interview, the following interesting
information are collected.
How was his interest aroused?
His father Ramanathan played shuttle
cock and badminton well. He took the young
boy Ramanathan wherever he ventured to
play. The active and dynamic boy enjoyed the
play of his father and started playing tennis, a
game played with a bat, from his eighth year.
Knowing his eagerness his parents, instead of
discouraging him, encouraged his talent with
enthusiasm.
Education ?
His high school education was in A.M.M.
Matriculation School. He studied +2 in
Christian College High school Chetpet. He
is pursuing BA Economics in Loyola College
now.
Turning Point ?
He won victories at the state level in his
10th age and the national level in his 12th
year. When he was 15 years old, he won the

under 16 years. This win became
a great turning point in his tennis
career.
About his training ?
Arduous practice is necessary
for fitting in tennis. He practises
3 hours in the morning and 3
hours in the evening every day.
Physical exercise for 2 hours daily
tunes up his body. Such arduous
physical training and practice now
raised Ramkumar to this high level
personality. He was trained in
Spain during his 14-16 years and
he considers this foreign training
as his most useful gift.

in Spain. His father Ramanathan
says that if sponsorship is extended
by companies or individuals he
could involve him more forcefully
✲ In 2009, he won the single and double
titles at his 15th year in the M.C.C Adidas under
18 tournaments.
✲ In the same year he participated in
his first foreign training in Barcelona in Spain
in San-chek-Kazal academy. This training was
conducted with the supervision of Sergio Kazal
and Juan Palcels- the top seeded players of
Spain.
✲ In 2013, he won the championship at his
18th year in the National Mens Title conducted
at Kolkata. In the same year he won the
tournaments at Raipur and Kampuchea and got
the 526th ranking in the international level.
✲ In 2014, he won in three rounds in the
ATP-Aircel tennis preparatory series at Chennai.
He conquered the Indian tennis stalwart Som
Dev Devvarma in this tournament. In the same
year he won in the five tournaments conducted
by international tennis federation and acquired
291th rank in the international rank order.
✲ Towards the end of 2014, he achieved
241st rank in the international rank order and
became a member of the Indian Davis cup
team.
✲ In 2015, he participated in the Australian
open tournament. On his return to India, he
captained the Tamilnadu team in the national
tennis tournament at Trivandrum. He won two
gold medals and declared as the individual
champion.
✲ At present he is in the 206th place in the
international ranking and in the fourth place in
the Indian ranking. He won gold medals in the
men’s singles and doubles in the 12th South
African games conducted at Guahati in February
2016.

Encouragement by parents ?
We took him for daily practice in the morning
and evening and we did that with much enthusiasm.
Now he has to play in other states/ countries for
about 20 days in a month. My wife Alagammai and
I look after the arrangements. We contact tennis
associations in foreign countries for obtaining
invitations and visit foreign embassies to obtain
visas. Such basic work is carried out by us to assist
Ramkumar.
Moreover, 16-20 age is the most important
period for building the career for tennis players.
They have to play against, some famous players

during this period. They should train
them untiringly without losing morale
under defeats. They should continuously
participate in the foreign tournaments.
Then only they can reach international
ranks. Ranking is valid for one year only.
If they do not play in some tournaments
they will go down in the ranking
order. Players who cannot face these
difficulties give up the game and revert
to their studies. Tennis players require
strong morale, brave mind to face the
game and rich economic background.
As the parents, we extend the necessary
encouragement to Ramkumar, says
Ramanathan.
Healthy food?
Stamina is needed much for playing
tennis. This is not a team game, but the
fight of a single person. Sometimes it
is a game of doubles. Nourishing food
is essential, western players engage a
personal dietician. We do not have such
practice here. The advices of dietician
are received and followed. Alagammai
told with affection that her son takes less
spicy food with little salt, less tamarind
and less chilies.
Family?
Father is in textile business and
mother is a home maker. His sister
Uma and her husband Palaniappan are
both software engineers working in
Singapore.
Future goals?
He aims to raise the name of India
with flying colours and win Grand Slam
titles and he plays with high hopes. It is
true. He is the future star of Indian tennis
and his wins in recent tournaments are
the indications. Namadhu Chettinadu
extends its best wishes to Ramkumar to
achieve his goals, gloriously.

aja Rammohan Roy rebelled against
the practice of ‘sati’- the burning of wife in
the funeral fire of the husband- in Bengal. So.
Murugappan, belonging to our Nagarathar sect
fought tooth and nail against the derogatory
practice of treating women as destitute widows
and spoiling their entire life, in south India.
So, he was rightfully called the Raja
Rammohan Roy of south india and greate
reformer. He conceived and implemented
reforms in the life and practices of Nagarathar
community.
He was born in Karaikudi which is
considered as the capital of Chettinad. It is the
largest commercial town in Sivaganga district.
His father was Chokkalingam Chettiar and
mother was Visalakshi Achi. He was born on
21.08.1893.
Among the nine sacred temples of
Nagarathar community he belongs to the
Pillaiyarpatti clan.
As per the social practice of Nagarathar,
Murugappa attended the thinnai school, the pial
school of gurukula type. He learnt the alphabet,
multiplication tables, fractions, and the moral
precepts of Avvayar like Moodhurai, Nalvazhi
and Nanneri.
Later he learnt with fervor and passion
Tamil grammar and Tamil literature from
Chidambaram Iyer, who had won Vidhwan title
from Madurai TamilSangam.
In his 19th year, he married Porkodi the
daughter of his maternal uncle.
He received panchaksara upadhesam from
Patharakkudi swamiji and was much devoted to
the Hindu religion.
Following the community practice of
financing business, he went to the city of Epoh
in Malaya and practised the financing business
from 1913 to 1916.
During that period he realized that the
Hindu religion interspersed with Tamil ideals
was losing track and losing its glorious state.
He earnestly felt that he should preach real
spiritual precepts mastered by him to the Tamil

people. He decided to involve himself in public
service.
In this state, he returned from Malaya
to Karaikudi. Along with Murugappa who
returned to India with inspiration and
enthusiasm, twenty friends including Raja
Chokalinganr, Kamban adipodi Sa. Ganesa
nar, Thi. Narayanan chettiar, and A. Mu. Ka.
Mu. Karuppan chettiar aligned to form Hindu
Madhabimana Sangam in 1917.
This Sangam did great service to the
Hindu religion, freedom movement and Tamil
development.
At the invitation of Vai. Su. Shanmuganar
Mahakavi Barathiar visited his house and
stayed there from 28.10.1919 to 10.11.1919.
On his journey back to Kadayam, Barathi
stayed in Karaikudi for 2 or 3 days. He visited
Hindu Mathabhimana Sangam on 9.11.1919
and congratulated the Sangam for its worthy
activities. He took a photograph with mem bers
of the Sangam. As requested by the Sangam
members, Barathi sang 7 poems praising the
Sangam wishing it well in future.
In the whole of Tamilnadu, the only
association which received the poems of
Barathi is Karaikudi Hindu Mathabhimana
Sangam.
After inauguration of Hindu Madhabhi
mana Sangam, Murugappa established another
institute named Ramakrishna Kalasalai.
Chidambaram Iyer who was earlier mentioned
as the gurukulam teacher, was appointed as the

instructor in Ramakrishna Kalasalai. Many
ardent students got the opportunity to learn
Tamil language and literature in the proper
and formal way. Murugappa also learnt Tamil
continuously in the Kalasalai.
On 11.09.1919, with some members of
Hindu Madhabhimana Sangam, he founded
Dhanavaisya Uzhiyar Sangam. On behalf of
the association he published a journal Dhana
vaisya Uzhiyar, and served as its edi tor.
On 15.07.1921, due to the strenous efforts
of Murugappa, the 96 villages Nagarathar
assembly was convened.
Later due to some other reasons he hand
ed over the editorial responsibility of Dhana
vaisya Uzhian to Raja Chokkalingam and left
the Dhanavaisya Uzhiyar Sangam also.
He commenced the Karai Sivanadiyar
Thirukkottam. On behalf of it he published
a monthly magazine ‘KUMARAN’ for a few
years and served as its editor. That magazine
was published as a literary magazine in enti rety
and carried worthy literary essays of great Tamil
scholars. “Murugan allathu alagu” [ Mu ruga or
Beauty] the most eminent essay of Tamil savant
Thiru. Vi. Ka was first published in this journal
only.
On 22.08.1923, he started the weekly
magazine ‘Kumaran’ and for about 25 years
published it as a very popular and worthy
weekly, serving as the editor and publisher of
the weekly.
In its first issue, Murugappa mentioned
‘Kumaran’ will work dedicatedly for social
development and religions development,
treating them as the two eyes of him. Murugappa
added further aims as, “Among the national
resurgence activities, the best one is the khadi
movement and Kumaran will involve it in
entirety and work whole heartedly”. In religious
ways ‘Ahimsa’- nonviolence will be considered
as the pupil of the eye and ‘Kumaran’ will work
for it.
For the first two years the aims of the
journal were the following celebrated slogans.
‘My purpose is to work for others’, ‘Working
for the betterment of Nattukottai Chettiars’. ‘Temple worship is most worthy’, ‘Cross the
seas to collect wealth’
In 1926, “Khadi is Life, Mercy is God”
replaced these slogans.
From 1930 all these phrases were given
up and two couplets from Thirukkural by
Thiruvalluvar were given pride of place.

These changes were caused by Murugappa’s
changes of principles. In the beginning, the
journal was started for social reformation
among nagarathar and Indian freedom move
ment. As time flowed on Murugappa’s
connections with Periyar E. Ve. Ra. made him
use this journal for propagation of self respect
and rationalistic ideals. The changes in slogans
point to these developments.
In ‘Kumaran’ weekly, literary essays and
poems found place along with news items.

Mahakavi Barathi’s poems, articles of Thiru. Vi.
Ka, R.P. Sethupillai, Sami Chidambaranar, T.K.
Chidambaranatha Mudaliyar, Vipula nanda
adigal and T.N. Subramanian were published.
The poems of Kavimani Desika Vinayakampillai
were first published in ‘Kum aran’ weekly only.
Murugappa, wished that Tamilians should
known the history and thoughts of Buddha
who preached love and mercy as the foremost
ideals. Murugappa requested Kavimani Desika
Vinayagampillai to write the minor epic Asia
jothi, Light of Asia.
Many good poets who write Tamil verses
developed in Chettinad because of the ‘Venba’Fourline stamza- competition conducted by
‘Kumaran’ weekly. Every week the final fourth
line of a venba would be given and the poets
wrote the three preceding lines to complete it.
During that era, lot of youngsters waited with
bated breath for Thursdays to receive and read
‘Kumaran’.
A venba wrote with the fourth line given by
‘Kumaran’, wrote by the author of this essay
was published then.
“Ignorant; Artless; Lacking in love;
Wicked, unpopular”. The whole world
Should not abuse me: So, my ignorance!
You are like dark night Go away!

The journalists who worked with Kuma ran
became worthy writers and artistes in due course.
Among them P.Sri, Murugu Subramaniam,
editor, Ponni magazine which encouraged poets
of the Bharathidasan’s heritage, P.Neelakandan,
Film Director are noteworthy.
Once, Murugappa was delivering a speech
on widow remarriage in Pattukottai. It was one
of the ideals of Periyar. E. V. R. s self respect
movement. Suddenly a young widow from
the audience, Maragathavalli, came to the dais
and raised a sharp, surprising question to the
speaker.
“I am a widow, who attained puberty only
after the death of my husband. Will the speaker
marry me, as per his speech?”

Murugappa, filled to brim with affection,
has honest mind and clarity of speech. He
expresses what he felt without too much
craft. Too much of praise or too much of
criticism are absent in his approach.

We discern interest in education,
service-minded
activity,
reformative
mindset and a host of talented speakers in
Chettinad now only. The great source for
all these developments was Murugappan.

happy consent to marry the girl.
On 29.06.1929, the marriage of Murugappa
and Maragathavalli was conducted in the presence
of Periyar E. V.R. at Thiruparankunram.
A magazine named ‘Sanda Marutham’
(cyclone) was published by him from
Thiruchirappalli, only for propagating self
respect rationalistic ideals.
Murugappa and Maragathavalli jointly
established Mahalir Illam (home for
women) to educate young girls and equip
them with handicrafts training and arrange
remarriages when possible. It was established
at Amaravathipudur on 10.04.1938 and then
the minister for education Dr. Subbarayan
inaugurated it.
This institution published a monthly Madhar
Marumanam (Remarriage for women). A nursery
school was also started and Vibulanandha
Adigal inaugurated it on 30.08.1939.
‘Mahalir Illam’ was continued by
Maragathavalli even after Murugappa. After
Maragathavalli, it did not function.
The ‘mahalir Illam’ campus was purchased
by Pallathur Mu. A. Palaniappa Chettiar family
and they shifted the Sri Sarada Sevasram, a
Murugappa has well developed knowledge
and forceful writings.

Murugappa can be called as the Raja
Rammohan Roy of south India. Murugappa
was unequalled in hating the old practices,
disregarding the useless ways, learning
the emerging new trends and acquiring the
golden precepts of value. His biography is
the history of reforms in our country.

Murugappa is a great nobleman. He
was attracted to the pious principles of
Gandhiism. He is a very cultured friend.
Pleasant face, kind words and simplicity are
hallmarks of his character. He was fortunate
to meet, appreciate and look after the great
poet Barathi.
He had a brave heart, –in social affairs he
was not disconcerted by the opposition and
conquered all.

common to all. In the same way knowledge
and research are also common to all. This
effort of mine is also common to all” are
the lines in his preface to Kamban’s epic.
Murugappas heart, deeply interspersed with
rebellion, is also very humble, honest and
sweet. The preface indicates it clearly.

My poems were first published in So.
Murugapp’s magazine ‘KUMARAN’. He
encouraged me to pen and publishes ‘Light
of Asia’ in Tamil. He sent me the original
English version of that work to me.

The management of that service organization
was handed over to Salem Sri Saradha Samithi
in 1994. Sri Saradha Samithi established Sri
Saradha Niketan Womens College in that
campus.
The great Tamil poet Kamban is closely
associated with Chettinad. Kamban’s tomb
is in Nattarasankottai, a hamlet in Chettinad.
Moreover there is a memorial stone and places
associated with Kambar. Viz. Kambar kulam,
( Kambar tank), Kambar oorani (Kambar
Drinking water pond) and Kambar sei (Kambar
field). Muthunayaka pulavar, a poet who lived
there in 1775 penned a poem mentioning
Kambar’s connection to Nattarasankottai.
Murugappa was much attracted to Kamban’s
Ramayana. He published the scholarly treatises
of Prof. R.P.Sethupillai on the aspects of
Ramayana in his magazine ‘KUMARAN’. He
wished earnestly that the Kambar’s narrative on
Rama should be properly edited and published
and the reading public should receive its
benefits. He involved himself during the fag end
of his life from 1950 to 1956 in editing work of
Kamba Ramayana. He toiled without rest. He
selected 3251 verses so that the narration does
not suffer in anyway and added meanings, brief
narration and appreciation of poetic nuances. It
was named Rama Kaathai- The story of Rama.
Two parts of that edition were published.
Bala gandam, the story of Rama growing
as a young boy was published in 1953 with a
preface from Pandithamani and appreciation
by Vaiapuri pillai. The Ayodhya canto was
published in 1956 with the appreciation note of
Raja Chokkalinganar.
He authored a treatise – Kambar Kaviyam
– athan nilai vilakkam ( Kamban’s epic – its
standing – an explanatory note). It served
as a critical preface on Rama Kathai. It is
considered as a rare research work pointing out
the interpolation and decadence in Kamban’s

Murugappa served as the able companion
when Kamban Adipodi Sa. Ganesar established
Kamban Kazhagam in Karaikudi in 1938.
Murugappa maintained a deep and abiding
friendship with Mahavidwan Vayinagaram. A.
Ramanathan chettiar, an eminent scho lar hailing
from the Amaravathipudur Vayi nagaram family
who renovated 14 temples including Madurai
Arulmigu Meenakshi Sun dareswar temple.
Once Murugappa visited the vayinagaram
house. He took a water kettle (kooja) with him.
He forgot to take it back when he returned.
Vayinagaram Ramanathan chettiar informed
the same in verse to Murugappa.
You preach ethics in rich Tamil;
“Pandya”. Influenced by it, Murugappa named
his son as Veerapandian.
He went to village after village delivering
speeches to stop killing of animals.
His penname was ‘ Anja Nenjan’ (The Brave
hearted man).
When Nagarathar’s hair style turned into
cropped hair, it was considered wrong by
some people. Murugappa fought against such
prejudices.
Murugappa, who worked hard for social
reformation, Tamil development and the
uplift of women passed away on 20.06.1956 in
Chennai.
A four line stanza – venba on this great
reformer:-
You are an embodiment of virtue!
Reforms for the uplift of chettiars
You got up as a pious man and left
Eagerly carried out every day
yesterday morning!

The Tamilisai movement – singing Tamil

keerthanas – took Murugappa’s heart and
he served as a front ranking leader of it. In
addition to it, he organized music festival on
Muthu thandavar, one of the three great Tamil
music stalwarts.

Kovalan
sang a song praising river
cauvery.
“Chola, the king of chola kingdom is the
guardian of the kingdom’s major river Cavvery. He marched with his army towards
north and won the regions in and around
Ganga river basin. Even then Cauvery is
steadfastly intertwined with chola. The reason is the chaste quality of virtuous women.
Oh lady Cauvery! Long live!” Kovalan praised
the river sitting on its banks.
Poets usually personify rivers as women.
Chola king embraced another woman when
Cauvery is rightfully belonged to him. Even
then, Cauvery is not angry with him. The
reason is the tolerant bahaviour of virtuous
women. Madhavi understood this in a different mode. She thought that Kovalan belittled
his paramour Madhavi and praised his wife
Gna. Manickavasagam
Swan! You did not tell my worries of stayi
ng alone to him! Do not come here!
Tantalizing evening – why does it come?
The moon burns me hot! The soft breeze
burns me like fire!’
Using a lot of images of the loneliness of
the heroine on her separation from the hero,
Madhavi sang in a sonorous voice in tune
with the music of the harp. The proverb says,
‘The goddess Lakshmi lives in the words of
the liver’. Whatever she sang fell on her as her
unfortunate loss and suffering.
This is the painful result of not understanding one another – fate conspired against
them. Wife is not only described as the companion for life. She is the embodiment of
goodness – benevolent companion for lifelong journey.
Is there anything more
powerful than fate?
Kannagi. Even though Kovalan left Kannagi
alone and came to be with Madhavi, Kannagi
is patient and tolerant because of her chaste
nature. This is the real meaning of Kovalan’s
song, thought Madhavi. She wants to reply
with another song and took the harp from
Kovalan.
“Oh! Sea! With your flowing waves! Oh!
Sandy beach!
Sweet smelling flower! Tantalizing nice
evening!
My hero left me, left the love for me and
the horse drawn carriage.
Even if he leaves us, we shall not leave
him.”
‘O! Red-legged stork! Why do you come
here?

A truly wedded wife doesn’t bother much
the slips of her husband. She will not differ or
quarrel. She will cooperate mostly. Husband
also will not be keen to point out the flaws
of wife. Even if he comes across some minor
defects he will ignore it as her nature. Here
Kovalan is not the truly married husband of
Madhavi and Madhavi is not the lawfully sole
mnized wife of Kovalan.
Kovalan was the son of Masathuvan, a
rich merchant whose resources equalled that
of the king, in the city of Poompuhar.
Madhavi was the daughter of the acc
laimed dancer Chitrapathi. Madhavi is consi
dered equal to the beautiful heavenly dancer
Urvasi. When Madhavi’s formal dance recital
inauguration was conducted, the King accor
ding to the traditions of the land, presented
the emerald garland, 1008 ‘kalanju’ gold and
the thalaikol Tittle.
Madhavi received that gift of 1008 kalanju
weight golden garland of 24 karat gold. She
sent it through one of her servant maids and
declared that whoever purchased that costly
garland will become the rightful paramour
of Madhavi. The maid called out for a purchaser in the auditorium and the main streets.
When nobody is rich enouch to purchase that
costly ornament, she had a mocking glance
on the rich men of that city. This challenged
the heritage, copious wealth and glory of
the rich clan of Kovalan. These challenges
danced in front of his eyes. Fate conspired to
arouse the intrest, ego and power of Kovalan.
So he purchased the garland with the worth
of 1008 kalanju. Rather he was bought by
Madhavi and followed Madhavi to her house.
He reached the point of no return forgetting
the rightfully wedded wife.
Fate pressed hard. It came in the shape of
Madhavi’s garland and became the chain of
bondage. Even Thiruvalluvar who penned in
his kural that one can defeat fate with proper
effort, allocated a chapter of ten couplets on
the power of Fate. After nine couplets on the

undefeatable force of fate, he concludes in the
final tenth couplet “Is there anything more
powerful than fate? Nothing?” He heaves a
sigh. We accept that Fate is strong. We plan
to conquer it with our dynamic efforts and
start over actions. But fate will run ahead of
us and show its invincible might and laugh at
us. So how powerful the Fate is? This power
pulled Kovalan to Madhavi.
Sivanesar of Thiruvenkadu got a son and
named him Thiruvenkadar. This boyhood
name became Pattinathar in later days. He
carried out trade across the seas with many
ships and became a wealthy merchant. But he
renounced all his wealth and became a sany
asi, a hermit, with just a loin cloth and lived
in Thiruvalangadu temple as his home. Once
he sat in meditation in front of a Vinayaga
temple.
At that time, thieves who stole ornaments
from the palace came across that way. Soldiers were in hot pursuit, chasing them. To
divert attention, the thieves put one necklace
of pearls on Pattinathar’s neck and disapp
eared in darkness. The palace guards thought
that Pattinathar was the thief wearing pearl
necklace and he was in pious disguise. They
took him in custody and produced before
King Bathiragiri. The King ordered that the
thief should be killed by putting him upon
the sharp iron spike. The guards took him to
the killing field. Pattinathar’s meditation wore
out and he looked upon the iron spike. ‘My
actions now do not warrant this murder by
spike. But the evil deeds of my earlier births
accumulated and raised their ugly head. This
is also god’s will’, he thought. He sang a
verse……….
“I cannot do anything further! Oh! God!
This is the act of you – divine lord,
I didn’t do any evil after I was born in this
body.
But the evils of my earlier births raised its
fiery head!”
Suddenly the spike got fire and it collapsed. The king learnt the news – ran fast
and fell at the feet of Pattinathar – cried and
sought his forgiveness. He became the disci

ple of Pattinathar.
Even the great sanyasin Pattinathar who
renounced all his wealth realized that he did
not do any evil in the current birth but the
collected evil of earlier births brought him
that punishment. If that is the case of a great
sanyasi what will be the fate of ordinary mortals? The effects of good and bad deeds will
continue in the subsequent births. This idea
is conveyed in, epics and literary works.
Kovalan misunderstood that Madhavi had
some hidden meaning in her reply song to his
‘Kaanal vari’ – Beach Avenue songs. Madhavi took the meaning that Chola king took
Ganga but has not forgotten Cauvery and it
will continue to hold him. In the same manner Kannagi will continue in the memory and
life of Kovalan. So Madhavi sang a song on
separation of hero and heroine. Fate played
all this tricks. If they talked freely with one
another on the real meanings of their songs,
the separation would not have occurred. The
relationship would not have broken. The
after effects of earlier births struck on them
as thunder through the music of the harp.
Kovalan threw away the hand of Madhavi
and stood up. Madhavi asked him whether it
was time for returning home. He ignored her
words and went away alone. As soon as he
left the song and dance of the girls stopped.
Madhavi was depressed and returned to her
home in her cart.
Madhavi could have tried to stop the angry Kovalan. She didn’t do it. Where would
he go? He would come back today if not
tomorrow, she expected. She went to the
balcony of her palatial house and played
the harp shaped like a fish – maharayazh.
Her voice didn’t tune with the music. She
sulked and her heart didn’t like singing. She
kept away the harp. In her mind she wanted
to make Kovalan happy. She saw the many
flowered garland in front of her. Manmathan,
the god of love uses only flowers as his arrows. So she decided to arouse the feelings of
love in Kovalan by expressing her thoughts
writing them in a flower petal.

by her as her pen. She penned a missile.
“This is the sweet season of spring! All
the beings are happily loving one another!
The prince of love comes along in the chariot
of cool breeze! The attractive evening has arrived. Moreover the full moon pours its milky
light. The bright and cool moonlight of the
beautiful moon makes the hearts of separated
lovers fiery hot!
If a couple who mingled with one another
joyously, separated for a short time or if one
lover forgets another companion manmathan
thinks it is the apt time and aims his flower arrows and becomes like a god of death to the
separated one. Please understand the peril!”
Madhavi called for her bosom friend Vasanthamalai and told her, “Please take this letter to Kovalan”. Kovalan told “Your heroine
with Thilak in her fore head, long black hair,
lily like eyes Kumizham flowers like nose and
reddish lips like Kovvai flower looked at me
like a lover who fell in love with me- it was a
drama – not a real act”.

Eyed me with desire, spoke like sugarcane
juice- it was also a drama.
When evening sets in she is attracted to
me and behaved as if she was in suffering- it
was also a drama.
Anklets raised sonorous sound, the hip
danced, she bewitched me, walked away as if
she didn’t see my longing- it was also a kind
of drama.
Her garland spreads sweet smelling petals; her necklace with jewels and soft breasts
like flowers extend charm; your heroine sang
a song with double meaning so that my heart
may suffer in pain! It was also play- acting
only.
I left her away and she pretends like she
is in sorrow- because of the separation- a
drama.
I realized that all these are drama only.
All these are only acclaimed arts for your
heroine because she herself is only a performing dancer!”
With these strong and sharp words Kovalan returned the letter back to Madhavi
through the very same messenger Vasanthamalai.

e looked at tax savings, gold deposits, small
savings and spreading investments in the previous
issues. Some of you might have invested in those
schemes. My best wishes to you for growth of those
investments. Some may like to invest afresh. Public
who invested already may know that we have to
make some efforts to create investments.
Financial investments are not easy like
purchasing pulses from a grocery shop. Even if
the price of pulses sky rocket, they will sell to you
if you give the higher price. At present they don’t
demand PAN number for purchase of pulses. In
the ongoing trends PAN may be demanded even.
But for financial investments PAN number and
many other details will be demanded.
PAN number details are familiar to many. For
the new, PAN is permanent account number.
Income tax department issues it. One person
should have one PAN number only.
Alright, PAN number has been obtained. Don’t
think that one can make financial investments in
financial institution. The reasons are black money,
Hawala which is covert transaction in foreign
exchange, financing terrorist acts. The central
government has made many legal procedures to
stop those irregular financial transactions.
The most important procedure is KYC- Know
Your Customer. This must be followed by each and
every investor. This should be done before making
investments. It has to be done only once. For this
one needs PAN number, colour photograph and
correct address card. I repeat, one needs a correct
address card (here only many face difficulties).
Without KYC no one can make financial
investments. KYC is demanded in the beginning
of investments in mutual funds, share market, gold
bonds of government, small savings schemes and
demat account.
If you have not made KYC so far register KYC
for monetary investments. Even the investors,
who deposited in the above schemes few years ago
without KYC, should compulsorily do KYC now.
Investors who made KYC and invested few years
ago also should verify their KYC whether it
is suitable for present rules.

status. The PAN number must be used to
known your KYC status. If the KYC status is
not correct you can amend and correct it. The
form for KYC may be filled up and registered
for making the correction. This is called non
financial transaction. One should not be
negligent but with alertness should correct
KYC. This will make further transaction easy.
Otherwise subsequent transactions may get
bogged down.
Ok, essential KYC has been done. PAN
number is available. Correct address is
maintained. We should not be lazy or sleepy.
Even though not compulsory, doing some
needful things is better. Let us see them.
First is the cell phone number………
now everybody has a cell phone. People do
not have cell phones are treated as stone age
barbarians. This cell phone number should
be registered with financial institution. one
of the benefits available for such registration
is the facility of sms message sent by banks
if a monetary transaction takes place above
a certain amount (e.g. Rs 5000/-). Now
days we can get many services through cell
phones. Bank and mutual fund transaction,
current balance in mutual fund, value may be
obtained through cell phones.
Next is, e-mail address……….. This is
not so wide spread as cell phones. But it is
familiar to all. If you do not have an e-mail
address, obtain one immediately and register
your e-mail address in all your financial
institutions. From any town in any country,
without the necessity to go directly or taking
the torture of calling the organization’s
customer service outlet, we can know the
transaction details, balance and value through
mail back service.
Before looking after another write up, a
few words about the present social systems.
As far as I know the details of financial
positions is not informed by husband to wife
or wife to husband or father to son. So far,
they do not discuss financial position with
one another. There may be thousands of
reasons for everyone for such aloofness. The
net effect is, the deposit or asset would not
reach the proper heirs or there are numerous
problems in receiving the asset by the proper
heirs. This is the actual truth.
To avoid such difficulties, we can open a
joint account operated by two on the account
opening day itself. Moreover one can register
to whom and at which proportion the asset
should go to heirs or nominated persons after
the demise of the investor. This is the process
called ‘nomination’.
For mutual fund, share market,
government gold bonds, small savings and
demand account, for all these assets, register
your ‘NOMINATION’ right now without
any further delays. Many do not register
‘NOMINATION’. But it is highly essential.
For some persons, this may present some
difficulties. We nominate some relatives who
are liked much now by us. But after a number
of years they may not be liked by us. This
is human tendency. In such events, we can
change ‘nomination’. During your life time
you can change nomination any number of
times.
Nomination has been registered. Ok. Is
the work entirely over? No, not at all! Why?
Consider the matter deeply for some times.
We can understand. Let us see regarding that
in detail.

This will not give the expected effect. The

These are well known family quarrels. If
wife is nominated, daughter in law will start
the fight asking why the name of the son
was not nominated. If the son is nominated,
the mother’s condition will become pathetic
after the chettiar. Because of this problem
chettiar will not inform the details of assets
or investments to wife or children. The result
is the net effect told earlier. The legal heirs do
not know the details of investments. So the
investments do not go to them generally.
No one can understand registering the
‘nomination’ is not sufficient. The details
gains. The second level is ensuring proper
documentation, registration and maintenance
of details and ensuring the receipt of funds by
proper nominated heir later. The second part
is not done by many. This essay is mainly for
such people. The readers of this essay should
verify the registration of PAN number, KYC,
cell phones number, email address, correct
postal address, and nomination in financial
institutions and banks. If anything is missed,

NICE TO TASTE
BANANA FLOWER VADAI
Ingredients needed:Banana flower -1
Pottukadalai (Bengalgram) -100gm
(Grind as powder in mixie)
Salt & oil as needed
Anise (sombu) – 1 teaspoon
Ginger, Garlic Paste
– 2 teaspoons.
Method:Boil the banana flower in a
pot and drain the water. After it
cooled down, grind it in mixie.
Add pottukadalai powder, Anise
powder, Ginger, Garlic paste and
salt to the banana flower mix and
mix it well. Don’t add water.
The banana flower wet flour
may be made into small balls or flat vadas.
Then pour oil in a kadai and fry the banana
flower vadas. It is ready to eat now.
NOODLES BONDA
Ingredients needed
Onion – 1 (cut into small pieces)
Green chilies – 2
Carrot – 1
Beans – 5
Capsicum – cut into pieces
Green peas – small quantity
Potato – a few
Oil – as needed
Noodles – 1 small packet
Bonda mix or bengalgram flour
- as required
Salt as needed
Method:Boil carrot, beans, potato, green
peas and a little salt in a cooker till
2 or 3 whistles. Then pour oil in a
kadai and fry onion, green chilies,
capsicum, and the boiled vegetables.
In another vessel boil noodles masala
adding sufficient water.
Boiled noodles and boiled
vegetables should be mixed and
made into small balls. If you apply
some water in the hand, the mix will
not stick to the hands.
Take oil as needed for deep frying, pour
in a vanali and heat the oil to a medium heat.
The bengalgram flour or bajji bonda mix may
be added with water as required and a little
salt. (Please note the bajji bonda mix will
have already some salt mixed in it). Then the
small balls of noodles and vegetables should
be put in the bonda mix for the coating. Later
deep fry the noodle bondas in the oil and
tasty noodles bonda will be ready. Children
will crave for this snake.

Raj mohan entered into the house.
There are four glass shelves in Sigappi
Achi’s house. Books were arranged in all of
them. Servantmaid Kuppayi was cleaning
them with a cloth.
Achi was drying the mattress and pillows
in the open terraces. She saw the Eswaran
temple priest coming into the house and
came down on the steps.
“Welcome ‘sami’! Are the temple rituals
are conducted well?”
“It is done very well. When Nagarathar
are involved, how can any temple ritual will
not be good?”
“That is there. What is the matter? “
“Recently a marriage was celebrated in
U. Peri. Vellaiyan Chettiar’s house. Their
son in law will be leaving for America for
employment. They will be performing an
abhishekam [Holy bath with milk etc]. They
like us to adorn Pillaiyar with Golden Angi
(coat)”.
“Hey, Singaram, come here….”
“I am plucking jack fruit, Achi.” Singaram
replied from the garden.
“Jack fruits will not run away, you can
pluck them later. Come here for a short
while”.
Singaram climbed down from the jack
fruit tree. Adjusted his dhoti. Sigaphi Achi

stopping these?”
“Half of the time he will not be in temple.
If I ask he will tell lame excuses. He asked for
an advance of Rs 2000/-, you refused it. So
he is playing tricks”.
“His marriage was conducted at our
expenses. A rent free house in the temple
has been given to him. We took care of his
wife’s delivery expenditure. What else can
we do? We should not allow him to knock
on our head by bending time and again. If it
stings it is a scorpion. Otherwise it is treated
as harmless beetle. No monetary advance
for him need be given. Sami, be very strict.
Charity should not be taken as business gain.
Don’t introduce such new practices”.
“No, No, I am not allowing any
unwarranted new practice! I informed you as
you should be aware of it. If a cat closes its
eyes, the world will not become pitch dark
everywhere!”
“Leave this matter. Give a list of
expenditure for kumbhabisekam. I shall ask
the accountant to look into it when he comes.

is liked by chettiar very much that is why I
asked you to pluck tender ones. You say
that you would give it to others. Keep it
here and give the vegetable cutter to me. Go
and come quickly, don’t waste time standing
there, looking at things. The kitchen is full
of cobwebs. Stand on a stall stool and clean
away the cobwebs, go………….
Singaram went away.
Raj mohan entered into the room. He saw
the thousands of books in the almira and was
wonder struck.
The telephone rang. Sigappi Achi ran from
the kitchen and answered it. Her husband
Thanneermalayan chettiar was listening to
the world news sitting on the reclining chair.
The phone was ringing for a long time.

Sigappi Achi will become angry if her
work is disturbed. But her nagging words are
just like a beggar’s cry, “Give alms, plain rice,
in the name of god” to chettiar. Sigappi Achi
took the phone and spoke. Her granddaughter
Nachal spoke.
“Appatha, grandma, Nacha is speaking”
“Tell me Nacha, are the children hale and
healthy? Your chettiar (husband) went to
Qutar, had he returned? Is he well? The elder
boy Pethaperumal, is he studying well?
“He is studying hard, but forgets what he
learnt”
“Tell him kindly to learn well. Has he got
good marks?”
“He is getting good marks, A grade”.
“Then, what is the younger boy Chellappan

(The utterance of pleasant words G. U.
Pope translation)
This is called DHARMA by Sanskrit texts.
Rule of dharma, it is called. Aram is different
from Dharma, some scholars opine. Aram
includes Dharma also. The ancient classics of
Tamil predominantly used the word Aram,
for virtue, morality, ethics and noble ways of
life. We shall deal with this elaborately in later
issues.
The institutions which resolve the disputes
among public are called by us as courts of
justice.
Court can be called as ‘Muraiyidum
manram or muraiyeettu manram, i.e.,
courts where public seek justice. In ancient
Tamil texts, courts are called Aram koorum
Avqiyam. As these are defined as courts where
ethical principles are declared we can clearly
understand that the early Tamils treated
moral principles as law of the kingdom.
‘Sattam’ (law) was not mentioned anywhere
in ancient literature as far as we know. ‘Aram’
– virtuous principles prevailed. The courts of
justice were called Aram koorum Avaiyam
– the courts where Ethics are declared as
judgment.
Chilappathikaram mentions :
‘If the rule of government is
Unjust or prejudiced or
The code of Ethices becomes one sided
In the ‘Aram kooru Avaiyam’
MaduraiKanchi (A long narrative
included in Ettuthokai) says:‘The aram kooru avaiyam
Declares the perfect ethical principle
Without anger or pleasant manner
Towards any petitioner’
Many Ahananooru (400 poems on love)
poems in a number of places speak about
Aram Koorum nal avaiyam – the good courts
which define and declare virtuous conduct.
In these Aramkoorum Nal Avayams, very
popular justice was declared and dispensed
which evoked sky high praise. It totally agreed
with virtuous principles. In those days, there

were no laws in the written form. Collections
of legal principles or procedures were not
there. There were no thousands of printed
books regarding justice.
The king administered justice He served
as a virtuous king – a just king! He was
worshipped as living god by people!
The judgment given by him was proper
and perfect to the litigants who came to him
seeking justice.
The king held the crown on his head. He
may be a young man of tender age. He may
also be a well experienced gray-haired elder.
But the judgment given by him centered on
ethics. Let us see a case!
One person sold his land to another and
got the price money. The purchaser levelled
the land alright and started ploughing it after
some time. There was a hidden pot down
under the land and the purchaser took it out.
The pot was a treasure house. A lot of
gold coins and jewels were there. He got it
when tilling the land. Our friend did a strange
thing.
He rushed to the seller of the land and
told, “Sir, I bought your land and made it
alright. Then when I started ploughing it, I
got a pot of treasure. This belongs to you.
I bought only the land rightfully belongs to
you. Please accept the same………..”
(This incident happened in good old days! It
happened in the sweet nice Tamil land! The friends who
read this should not think and wonder as unimaginable
in the light of present century practices. Will it happen
now? Quite laughable!)
The seller disagreed. ‘Sir, I cannot accept
this. I sold the entire land, part and parcel
to you. I got the price amount before many
days. You are the owner of the land. So, this
treasure belongs only to you’.
Both of them repeated their words
again and again. But nobody accepted what
the other party told. They did not want to
accept the treasure even in a slight way. They
wondered what to do. Finally they came to
Aram koorum Avayam – the court of virtuous
principles to find a solution to the question
‘To whom does the treasure belong’.

Dr. S. Subramanian married his maternal uncle’s daughter Vasantha in 1965. The
elder son Dr. Sundar is Professor of Ortho in Chennai Ramachandra Medical College.
His wife is Uma. They have two daughters the younger son Muthu is M.S.degree
holder in Engineering from Boston. He looks after the administration of V.S. Hospital
from 2003. His wife is Sarada. They have twin daughters.
Amudha is the only daughter of Dr. Subramanian. Her husband Dr. Ramakrishnan
is an Ortho Surgeon. They have three daughters. The eldest daughter is studying I
year MBBS in Ramachandra Medical College.
Cancer is not a contagious or infectious
disease. Com mon cold which may come to
all of us, Malaria, T.B. Syphillis, AIDS, are
only infectilious diseases. Before 50 years
there were no medicines for curing TB.
That is why mathematician Ramanujam,
Mahakavi Barathi, Jinnah, the first
president of Pakistan died as the treatment
did not cure them. Nowadays medicine has
improved. They could have been saved
with 6 months treatment. Cancer is caused
by the uncontrolled growth of cells within
the body.

PARASURAMAN
Our Ancestors are highly talented in
expressing great thoughts and messages in
the form of verses. They will mix it with a
story and make them indelible in our minds.
Paduvar Muthappar authored one hundred
poems and narrated wonderful stories with
them and engraves deep and salient messages
in our hearts.
This song is like a valuable pearl.
This praises Lord Muruga.
“The Devas sought asylum with Lord
Muruga.
He was born as a child in Saravana
Poigai Pond.
The Venomous Mountain Kraunjam
was destroyed by the spear of Muruga.
Oh! Villainy, will break the! Hearts of
even Devas!
Siva, who won Yama with your foot,
It is true in the world.
The Devas were experiencing a sea of
difficulties due to the tyranny of Soora Padman
and they pray to Lord Siva. By his grace, Lord
Muruga appeared in Saravana Poigai pond as
a child and eventually destroyed the Kravnja
Asura. The poem gives out this message.
Though the poem deals with the slaying of
Kravnja, Paduvar Muthappar did not mention
about the destroyal of Surapadman in this
verse. Why is it like this? Why the Kranuja
destroyal episode is given much importance?
To understand the reason, we should know
the details of Kravnjam. If we know them, we
can understand the mind of Paduvar.
Kraunjan is a Rakshasa. He doesn’t have
mercy even to a slight level. He took the form
of a mountain. There is a path across it. If
anybody ventures into that path, it will have
a diversion. If one goes along the diversion,

another new path will cross it. It will lead to
so many other maze like paths. By and by, the
wayfarers will become tired and confused,
later they swoon and die.
Even great sages were caught in the tricky
maze of villainy and ended their lives. If this
is prolonged unendingly, what is the final
solution for such tantalizing trickery?
Every worst thing had a solution. So
Kravnjam’s magical tricks will also be ended
throughout one day. The day of relief came in
the form of sage Agasthya. One day……
Agasthya came along that way. As usual
Kravnjam blocked him. Agasthya realized
the villainous trickery of Kravnjam in a short
time.
Agasthya had drunk the entire sea and
made it dry once. Can’t he know to face the
trick of Kravnjam? He thought over a minute.
He took his staff and made holes in various
places in the mountain.
“Oh! Kravnja Asura! You make many
magical tricks and do much harm to good
persons. Lord Muruga will break you into
pieces by his spear and will destroy you”.

Agasthya threw a curse on him.
It happened like that. When Tharaka
Asura tricked and tried to kill Veerabahu
and his Soldiers, Kravnja came to the help of
Tharaka. Veerabahu and his group swooned
and fell. At the moment …………
Lord Muruga’s spear destroyed the
villainous tricks of Kravnja and killed
him. Veerabahu and his regions regained
consciousness woke up from the deadly
swoon and liberated by Muruga’s ‘Vel’.

What does it convey? Why does Paduvar
Muthappar mention this? Let us examine
it with the example of a present day
gadget………..
Cell phone! It developed as a valuable communication tool to
contact a person wherever he is, now expanded its utility. We can,
photograph, record Audio and Video, see what happens around
the world and makes everybody an addict of it. It is not possible
to extricate us from its magic.
Like wise, from one
thing, it changes to ano
ther, and that leads to
unexpected further chan
ges. The net effect……
Misfortunes attack us
in so many ways and roll
us into the worries. Like
Agasthya, some saintly
person appears and guides
us from darkness to light
and from misery to good
fortune. If we follow that
path steadfastly, by the
benign grace of god our
difficulties disappear.

divine appearance to

festival.
Thai poosam festival
will be celebrated in
Palani with much fun
and fanfare in fantastic
ways. It is conducted
with much delight and
fervor centering in the
Siva temple in the foot
hills where Peria Avudayar
(Siva) and Perianayaki
(Umai), Selvamuthu kuma
rasamy (Muruga) and
Somaskanda shrines. What

is the specialty of Thai poosam? Why does it
conducted in Perianayaki Temple?
When Lord Muruga flew around the
whole world in peacock for getting the ‘Fruit
of Wisdom’ and landed at the top of Palani
hill, goddess Ambikai come down only to this
sacred place and invited Muruga to her fold.
The Perianayaki Amman Temple is situated
in the place where goddess Ambikai set her
foot.
On the glorious full moon day in Thai
poosam goddess Ambikai presented the holy
spear ‘Vel’ to her son and blessed him to gain
victory in the war against Asuras. The next
reason……
There will be no moon light on the new
moon day i.e. Amavasya. On the full moon
day moon reaches its full growth and shines
in glory. In the same way on the day of Thai
poosam, tremendous power will emanate
from sun. Our ancestors guided us to
worship sungod on that day and designated
specific procedure of worship, so that we can
be benefitted from the tremendous power
emanating from sun.
Sun changes its orbiting path and the
occurrence of sacred period of uttarayana –
the northward movement commences in the
month of Thai. During that sacred period the
seventh aspect of sun falls in the astro-sign
of ‘Cancer’, the house of moon and moon’s
seventh aspects falls on the astro- sign of
Capricorn, which is the house of sun.
On that day our spiritual power is enhanced
due to sun and the power of mind is enhanced
by moon. So the rituals and worship are done
at a grand level on Thai poosam day.
Lord Nataraja performed his dance of
ecstasy and made the sages Pathanjali and
Viakrapadha and many others happy at Thillai
– (Chidambaram) on a Thai poosam day.
Vallalar, the great saint who preached
mercy to all and love to the fellow beings,
mingled into the divine existence of god

on a Thai poosam day only. (Poosam is the
constellation of stars in which full moon
appears in Thai months).
On such a sacred Thai poosam day
miracles happened at Palani and let us see the
details.
Thiru means goddess Lakshmi, Aa means
the divine cow Kamadhenu, Inan is sun. Ku
is earth. Ti is Agni. All of them worshipped
Lord Muruga at the place. Thiru - aa- inan
– ku - di. The name Thiruvavinankudi is the
ancient name of Palani. Nearby this holy
town Kandasamy lived maintaining a cow and
living by the income generated from its milk.
Kandasamy’s one leg was handicapped. He
cared less about wealth and more about the
worship of ‘saravana bavan,’ Lord Muruga.
He had a deep devotion and never forgets his
pious path.
One day…………….
Kandasamy was trying to milk the cow.
Blood came out from the udders of the cow.
Kandasamy was broken hearted. He cried
and prayed to Muruga,
“Oh Palani Andava! Blood is oozing out
instead of milk, safe guard the cow! Save
me! I shall carry “Paal Kaavadi” – milk in
two vessels on the two ends of the hole of a
traditional offering frame.
By the grace of Lord Kanda his worry
was relieved. It was the sacred day of Thai
poosam. Kandasamy wanted to thank Lord
Muruga by carrying out his ritual vow. He
poured milk in two small vessels and tied
them to his ‘Kavadi’ – the decorated caring
frame for offerings and limped with his
handicapped leg.
During that time...
The Thasildar, the head of administration
of that area arranged a big pooja and waiting
for his superior officer, the collector, the head
of district administration to come and grace
the function. He threatened the people of the
town and collected from them freely, fruits,
milk, flowers and coconuts.
Kandasamy approached the foot hill with
his milk ‘Kavadi’. But……..
But the subordinate officials shunted,
out him. “Go away to that side! Why do
you cross the path when the collector is
scheduled to arrive?” They blocked and
stopped Kandasamy from climbing the steps
of the temple hill.
Kandasamy was sad and stepped to one
corner with the milk offering. At the same
time……..
On the hill temple, the holy pouring of
milk over the Lord Muruga commenced.
When the first pot of milk was poured on
Palani Andava’s holy idol, one worshipper
jumped in a trance. He raised his voice in
divine intervention and told, “My sacred
worshipper Kandasamy is standing restless
with worry because of the mistake of the
Thasildar. Go and bring him here! The holy
pouring of milk should start only with the
milk brought by him!
Then the Collector himself came down to
the foot hill and invited Kandasamy to the
precincts of hill temple. The holy pouring
of milk was done with the milk brought as
offering by Kandasamy. Everybody realized
the boundless mercy of the six faced Lord
Arumuga.
Sage Arunagirinathar, the divine poet
praised Palani as the holy place where a lot of
miracles happen by the grace of Lord Muruga.
This was one of the miracles witnessed at
Palani.
Let us worship Lord Muruga, the divine
hero of the Thai poosam day to relieve the
worries of our minds.
Surely, Lord Kanda – will pour his
heavenly grace on all of us.

The Man
Short Story
Who Ran Away
The Puthurani village is in a happy
colorful appearance. A new school building.
Bright lamps fully adorn it and look
bright and stunning. Decorative festoons;
banana tree on the gate….Music is flowing
everywhere.
The headmaster, teachers, high ranking
officers and police officials are busy with
arrangements.
The chief minister is expected to come
there in a short while.
A few minutes ago, a luxurious big car
followed by two other cars arrived. Maniraj,
his father Sundara raman, brother, sister,
relatives, the old headmaster Venkatrama
Iyer all of them alight from the cars. The
teacher and police officers welcome them
and give them seats in the front rows of the
auditorium.
Within the next fifteen minutes the
chief minister arrives. All members of the
audience stood up, clap and welcome him.
The function starts with a prayer.
The chief minister is seated on the dais
along with MLA of that constituency,
collector and in the nearby seat is seated
Sundara raman.
They call upon Maniraj to come up to
the dais. Mainraj declines and says, “No!

No! It is – enough if my
father is seated on the
dais”
The new building is
declared open by Sundara
raman, father of Maniraj,
in the presence of the chief
minister.
The MLA opens the stone tablet in
which the names of the diginitaries and donor
are inscribed. Maniraj looked attentively
whether his father Sundara raman’s name
is mentioned in it and whether the building
is named after his mother.
All the speakers of the function showered
praise Maniraj, the donor of the building.
But his thoughts converge on the place
he sat in his class room in the school and
the incident of leaving that village without
informing anybody running a long distance
and on the long journey he undertook on
the train. He words of praise of the speakers
do not register on his ears. His thoughts go
round and round about his boyhood days.
He is unable to forget the old incidents
even after lapse of time. The incidents

happened on the day when he returned to
that village after 23 years shine as lightnings
on his mind. He recalls the incidents in his
mind. Only a few houses in the 12 streets of
the village have changed their appearance.
Two houses were painted in new colors.
Some of the old houses were dismantled
and rebuilt. One or two new houses were
also built up. On enquiry he learnt that the
builders went to, far away countries to earn
their wealth and used the earnings to build
the new houses.
Watching slowly every one of these
changed buildings he came round the whole
village. Finally, he stopped the car in front
of his own house where he was born and
brought up and played in his boyhood.
When the car stopped in front of the
house an aged gentleman comes out and
looks out craning his neck. He thought that
somebody was trying to locate or enquire
the address of some one. He turned his
head inside.
Maniraj knew that it was his father
Sundararaman. He is stepping into his
house of his birth after 23 years. It is a very
long gap. As he made a sudden visit without
any prior intimation who could recognize
him easily? Nobody recognized him.
When he climbed the steps of the front
porch Sundara raman came out asking in a
raised voice,” Who are you? Whom do you
want to see?”
“I came to see only you” told his son
Maniraj.
“Want to see me? Who are you?”
“Father, don’t you recognize me? I am
Mani………Maniraj”.
“Are you Mani? My son Mani, is it?” He
was shocked and surprised. He repeated,
“Are you my son, Mani?”
“Yes father, I am Mani only…….23
years have lapsed. That is why you do not
recognize me immediately. He put down
his suitcase and touched his feet and paid
obeisance.
Father was not sure whether it was true
or just a dream. He pinched his hands to be

sure. He hugged him tightly.
“Mani….I never thought that I could
see you again……At least you remembered
all of us after, so many years…….I am very
happy…….How are you? Are you doing
well? Come along……Let us sit and talk”.
“Bhuvaneswari… Come here...Amma…
my son has come at last. Bring a cup of
good coffee….quick……” He told in a
voice choked with pleasure and emotion.
A woman of about 40 years age came
out from inside. ‘Welcome brother’ she
told and went inside and brought a cup of
coffee.
“Brother, where are you? What are you
doing? The deity of our clan, the dancing
Ayyanar only has brought you back here”
she told. “First drink the coffee” and mixed
more sugar in it.
His house appeared small to him as he is
seeing it after many years. One more reason
is, he is coming from Mumbai city where
tall skyscrapers and heavy population
abound”.
He looked intently with eagerness all
the photos hung in the wall. A picture of
a woman was garlanded and a lamp was lit
in front of it. On seeing it tears well in his
eyes……
“Oh! Mother, my mother! I, Mani has
come! Forgive me...I could not come and
see you who gave birth to me and brought
me up”. He bows to her in his heart.
The next picture was taken when he
was a 5 year old boy along with his elder
brother and elder sister. In it he was sitting
in the middle of his father and mother. His
brother and sister stand behind. Seeing the
same he asks,
“Father! Where is sister? How is she?
Where is brother?”
“Your sister Saradha is in the nearby
town only. She has three children. Your

brother-in- law works in a government
office there, she is doing well”
“Your elder brother Gandhirajan is in
Chennai. He has no children. Your sisterin-law is a very nice lady….They come and
see me quite often. Hm…I have crossed
the age of 70. What is my need here after?
The grand children will visit me now and
then seeing them and talking to them is my
only happy pastime.
“Leave away all these! In which town
do you live? What are you doing? You
remembered your father, myself! At least
after 23 years”.
“How could I forget you, my father?
Because of my bad time I separated from
you and went away”.
“I am in Bombay. I am quite wealthy. I
have own house, car and servants for my
errands…. I have not married so far. I earn
about 3 crores every year. I had a strong
vow. I should come back to this puthur
only if I reach a very high status. Otherwise
I thought that let my life end as it is. Now I
reached a very high status as I desired. I will
not leave you all hereafter”.
“Let the bygones be by gones! What is
your profession in Bombay?”
“I am a cinema cameraman there. My
name is not Mani there. It is Raju Sundar.
“Why? You don’t think Mani is a good
name?”
“It is not like that, Father, Raju is my
name. I came to this world only because of
you. I should not forget that so I attached
your name to mine”.
“Ok! You must be very tired. Take bath
and have rest….Let us talk after the lunch
is over. I shall ask Bhuvaneswari to prepare
lunch”.
“Father! Who is this Bhuvaneswari?”
“When your mother passed away, your
sister Saradha asked me to go and stay with
her. My heart did not feel like going away
from this house like your mother, I should
live to my last day in this house and then
only should breathe my last”.
“Don’t tell like that father. You should
live well for many years”.
“That lady Bhuvaneswari is working
in our house. She has a very good nature.
She will never be angry. She has 4 children.
They reside just beyond two streets. Her
husband is a driver. He is also a very good
gentleman. They treat me as their own
father. I have no complaints”.
Whatever his mouth spoke out, his
mind was pricking him for his guess; when
he wondered whether his father married a
second woman. It was a foolish thought,
his conscience condemned him.
“Father, after my lunch let me go and
see our teacher Venkatrama Iyer”.
He also enquired about you often. He
would ask was there any message? How is
Mani? Sundaram! Don’t worry! He would
definitely come back one day! He would
console me.
After his bath Mani wore new dress and
sat along with his father and ate lunch. He
remembered his last food which his mother
served in that house.
“Sir……Sir” called out Mani and entered
the front porch of the teacher’s house”.
“Who?”
“Sir, do you recognize me?”
“Who are you?”
“Sir, I am your student Mani raju”.
“Which Maniraj?”
“Sir, I am the son of Sundara raman of
kulathu street”.
“Is it you who left without trace before
23 years”?
“Yes, sir”
“Very glad! Welcome! When did you
come? Where do you live?”
“Sir, you are calling me with respect and
honorifics. I am still your student only. Sir,
you can talk to me as your student”
“Yes, I can treat and talk informally but
if I give you respect and talk with regard,
others may notice it and speak to you with
respect. Leave it, when did you come?”
He touched his feet with reverence and
told, “I came only this morning only. I am
now in Bombay in a good position. I am
quite wealthy also”.
“Sir, where is sister Bama?”
“She is in America with her family”
“I cannot forget her at all”
“So, you can conveniently forget us?!”
“I don’t say in that way, sir……whenever
I come to class without doing homework
and without studying the lessons, you
scolded me…..You couldn’t come up, you
dull head, you buffaloe, you will face a lot
of difficulties in life. After your curses,
sister will console me, “Don’t worry Mani,
If my father, who’s is your teacher, curses
anybody and says that he won’t come up
well, that fellow would definitely come
up and reach a high level….You wait and
see, you will also reach a very high level.
At that time don’t forget this sister”. She
would repeat it often. It still lingers in my

ears. Moreover she told, “Hey Mani! After
you reach a high status in life please build a
new building for our school…..It could be
definitely possible for you”.
“What to do, my boy? When children
don’t listen to us or don’t study properly in
anger, we scold them that they could not
come up well”.
“The proverb goes like………
The teacher has no command over
words, the policeman has no place to
go …..But my curse came true only in a
negative way”.
“The old saying must be taken very
differently still. The policeman corrects the
way of behavior. If the words do not come
all right, when one reads incorrectly only
the teacher corrects the words of a child.
Likewise people who fail in good conduct
and indulge wrong ways are warned,
corrected and shown the right path only by
the police, sir”.
“Well done boy! Nicely said! I am very
happy that you didn’t forget me and took
care to meet me after many years”.
“Sir, how many students are studying in
our school now?”
Reflecting on the point, the teacher
thought over for some time and said,
“Students coming from this place and
nearby villages will come around to 800
approximately. I am a retired person now.
The correct strength may be ascertained if
we ask the present headmaster”.
“Sir, I am in a good position now.
There is no shortage to my income. I am
contented. I earn very well. I would like to
help our school in our village in a big way.
“The government is freely giving
uniforms, books, notebooks and even
cycles. Some old students like you do some
help continuously”.

“Sir, I saw our school on the way. It is
in the same old tiled building…..I propose
to demolish it and build a new spacious
building. Sir”.
“Very very happy……come along, I
shall, accompany you. Let us go and visit
the school and return”.
“Sir, I am Maniraju, an old student of
this school. God has raised me to a very
high level presently. I propose to demolish
the old building of the school….I like to
do it…..This is my business card. You may
obtain all the necessary permissions. Don’t
worry about me expenditure. I shall donate
at least Rupees one crore. Whenever you
need money. I shall send to the bank in our
village. You should be patient enough to
look after the construction…………”
The teacher was shocked, overjoyed and
wondered whether it was a dream or true
incident and whether there could be such a
student at all.
“Brother, why you lost in your
thoughts….They are are calling you only
to dais to deliver your address……Goahead…. Speak out your experiences to
all of us…….” Vemkat rama Iyer shook
him. He became aware of the situation.
He alerted himself and climbed to the dais.
He adjusted his throat a little and gave his
speech.
“Honorable Chief Minister, Respected
MLA, Dear fathers, mothers of the town,
brothers elder to me and younger to me,
relatives and people of this town to which I
also belong, my obeisance to you all”.
“I studied in this very same school up
to seventh standard. Look there, you can
see a mango tree. Venkatrama Iyer sir,
taught our lessons under its shade. The last
day I attended my class was 14th August.
I never forgot that day. The next day it
was Independence Day. On that day I was
branded as a ‘thief’ for a mistake which
was not committed by me and produced
before my father. I agree that I was not a
good student regular in my studies. That is
true. But I was definitely not a thief. Even
though I told again and again no body
believed me. The scars of the beating by
belt by my father are still visible in my back.
Only two people believed that I was not a
thief then. One was my mother. Another
was Bama sister, whom I cherish till date as
my guide……Bama is none other than the
daughter of Venkatrama Iyer sir.
My mother told, Mani you are not at all
a thief. You are my son. You know only
to do good. Definitely you will not commit
wrong things or stay away from good path.
My mother is my predominant goddess.
My mind is sure that she is guiding me still
from somewhere beyond.
When I was blamed as a wrong person I
didn’t like this school, my fellow students,
even my father who gave birth to me, the
relatives and no one here. I did not feel like
living my life. I decided to commit suicide
by falling before the running train. With
such purpose I was walking over the railway
track. Suddenly somebody came behind me
and thrashed my back heavily. I cried with
unbearable pain.
“Idiot! The track is for the train to move
on. It is not a road for you to walk along”.
He scolded me. He bought me food to eat.
He enquired full details about me. I did not
reveal the truth. It was because I feared that
he would take me back to my home…..
Later he told me “I am residing in Bombay
you come along with me. You can stay in
my house looking after housework”. He
took me along with him.
He enquired so many times about my
family. I would tell that I am an orphan
only. I wished to reach a top level some

‘No sir! We can give. Please ask,
we shall give”.
“You asked me again and again
what do you want to eat. If I should
eat more, I need one more stomach”
told Ki. Va. Ja.

talked about me praising me: That strong
will to achieve was indelible in my mind.
Time flowed on.
Later I did not study….So who would
give me a good job, so I joined cinema
industry as a lightman. I learnt to operate
the camera very well. I changed my name as
Rajusundar. Luck also helped me.
When I joined my employment, whatever
my guru told me, which I still remember
well! I worried that I was a fool without
education. Whenever I was sad over it he
would say,
“There was a student who was scolded
by his teacher as” You are a damn fool,
unfit to learn any worthwhile thing. If
you at least learn and do menial jobs as a
casual wager, you can earn your livelihood
instead of wasting your time coming to the
school.”

But he didn’t become a useless person.
He went on to become an eminent scientist
who invented electricity, electrical bulbs
and cinema which are used by us. He was
the genius Thomas Alva Edison.
Whenever I lose hope and feel dejected,
he would say “Hey Raju, life is not what you
could not do so far. It is shaped by what
you would do here after. Sharukh Khan, the
cine star of tremendous fame in the whole
of India, slept on wooden benches on
street corridors, borrowed Rs 20 everyday
from his friend and travelled to Bombay
city in search of a chance to act in films and
reached the top level later. Take the case
of our cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar. He
failed in eighth standard. Later he beame an
internationally famous sportsman. Even our
leader Kamarajar who identified and made
two leaders as Prime Ministers of India
did not even study up to eighth standard.
Kannadasan who wrote film lyrics in cinema
with noble philosophical thoughts in a
simple style has not also passed the eighth
class. Achievements are not necessarily by
school studies. It will be the result of what
you decide with a strong mind. Work hard
hereafter for your lofty aims. So do not lose
heart and step up your efforts”. His words
served as vitamins and tonic which I drank
when I was in troubles.
“There is nothing impossible for you
Raju. Even if you fail thousand times don’t
give up your efforts. The winning chance
will come on the thousand and one time.
He was like another Bama sister I got in my
life. Such encouraging words became life
giving fertilizer to the growth of plants in
my mind”.
All the Hindi, Marathi and Punjabi films
in which I worked became resounding
successes. Top film stars became my friends.
I got the “Best Cameraman in India” award

from the President of India. In the history
of Indian cinema, a page is allotted to me.
I earned in crores. The reason for that are
the encouragement from my mother and
Bama sister and the encouraging words
my mentor told me often. My guru would
encourage me often with the words. “Raju,
you are born to achieve, born to win, you
can win. Definitely you can win.
I wanted to show my gratitude to
Madhavan Ayya who took me and developed
me as a person of consequence. Even
though he refused my help, I compelled
him and bought him a good house.
Though not for me, for my mother
and father who gave birth to me and my
respected sister Bama I wanted to build
a new spacious building for our school.
Because of the blessings of my mother and
the good wishes of my teachers I took up
and completed that work……….
Though I ran away from this village
before 23 years and reached whatever high
level, this is my own village. This is the village
of my birth that cannot be forgotten.
All of you can perform great
achievements. Nothing is impossible if one
has self confidence and untiring efforts.
You can also teach these to your children
with love and affection avoiding harsh
words and condemnation. If we are united
our village will be well always. Thank you”.
There was a resounding applause,
clapping of hands went on for quite some
time. It was over after some minutes. The
function was over.
“You told that you ran away became this
school named you as a thief. But in a way it
is not incorrect…… You are a thief as you
stole all the hearts in this village entirely”,
Venkatrama Iyer said with all smiles in his
face. He also laughed on hearing this from
his teacher.
“I came back to our village for two
purposes. One has been completed. Next
is my marriage. In my boyhood days my
mother identified a girl for me to marry.
She has reached the age of 29 and is still
unmarried like me. I shall marry her on an
auspicious day and will be taking her to
Bombay”.
‘Then, what about me………?’
His father Sundararaman quizzed him.
‘Not without you, father. You are the
first priority to take with me ‘.
Venkatrama Iyer, his teacher heartily
blessed him that this happiness may
continue ever here after.
One should live by the wealth earned
by him. Moreover he should help others
so that the relatives and his village folks

is a boon which very few good ones get.

The wealth that accumulated with a truly
wise man who loves his fellow beings is like
the copious water filling the village pond of
drinking water.
The moral is nothing is impossible if the
efforts are strong and unbroken.

Pongalo Pongal…….Sakkarap Pongal
Last year myself and my husband went to my son’s house for celebrating
Pongal. My son lives in Iswarya Apartments in Medavakkam Chennai. Both my son
and daughter–in-law work in IT Companies.
On Pongal day my daughter-in-law got up early and dressed herself in a sari
(only for that day). She cooked sweet Pongal in the Prestige cooker which was
decorated with turmeric stalks, in the kitchen slab itself. Then praying in the place
of worship called out to the children. “Pooja, Arvind, come on, pray to god, we are
celebrating god sun, eat breakfast quickly, let us watch Pongal programmes in TV,
come”. Suddenly my mind went back to the celebrations of Pongal in our native
place.
We call upon the pesant women living in the front porch, and start the cleaning
and decoration before a month. The floors are cleaned polished and made fresh. All
the vessels are washed scrubbing away the dust and dirt. The main front yard will
be decorated with kolams – patterns so beautiful in raw rice flour. The murichembu
– copper pot will be made shining bright. The lamp will be lit. Pongal will be cooked
in Lord Ganesha temple at 5 AM. Then a feast of mixed vegetables stew, jack
fruit curry, fried sabre beans (avarai), and fried sweet potato, and mashed dhal
will be made. The items with sugarcane will be spread and dedicated to the gods.
Enquiring nearby relatives and friends whether the milk Pongal boiled over well and
then the koppi will be done. That was the grandeur of Pongal in our youth. Now our
daughters and in laws do the Pongal in a quick fashion within a flat. (My god! If I
say it alone we may not get this fast food also, ‘Sigappi Achi’ will say). Like ‘Sigappi
Achi’ I wondered the changes in traditions.

The modern children may not be aware of
this historical fact. Only scholars knew the
glory of this aspect. You have explained the

Anmika Thondum Arunthamil Paniyum is
very sweet. Hon’ble Justice M. Chokkalingam
has mentioned in the essay ‘Homage to M.
A. M.’ that when we say MAM, MAM, it
will sound as “Imayam Imayam’. The reason
given for calling the Hon’ble Justice as elder
brother by the great, MAM Ayya is very nice
Hon’ble Justice meaningfully explained that
knowledge, wisdom, devotion and spiritual
attainment will come but will not leave us
after they come. But honor and ‘lives’ may go
but will not come back.
Thiru M. A. M. R. Muthiah, the worthy
son of the great M. A. M. will safeguard the
hereditary prestige of his father definitely.

commands” – These sacred precepts will be

under the Puthuvasantham ‘New Spring’
group Thiru. Panju Arunachalam was elected
as Vice President and Thiru. Karaikudi
Narayanan was elected as a member of the
Executive Committee. They won with a
resounding majority. They both belong to
our Nagarathar Community.

M. G. R. gave the Best Film Award and prize
of Rs 1 lakh. He introduced Urvasi Shobha in
this film in 1978.
16 awards, 23 Films, 36 Plays, and six
TV serials are his Achievements. Kaviarasar
Kannadhasan praised him as a person who
brought glory to our region. He is writing
the history of Nagarathar, in our magazine,
as a series under the title “Nagarathar
Sigarathar”.
Thiru. Panju Arunachalam
He was closely associated with poet
Kannadhasan and assisted him in his film
lyrics for recording them. His first song
is ‘Manamagale Marumagale Vaa Vaa’.
He introduced the legend Ilayaraja first in
his film Annakili. He produced films with
Kamal, Rajini and Sivaji as the Heroes. He
has written about 1000 lyrics. He wrote story
dialogue and himself produced 20 films.

You may have seen zebras in the
zoo! Oh! Seeing them the first question
appearing in your mind may be why do
these have such lines in their body? Many
answers were given by various people.
But the truth is the correct answer is not
yet found.
There may be multiple reasons,
zoologist think. The basic reason pointed
out by them is they are a camouflage to
escape from dangerous animals.
The sea turtles have their front legs
shaped like long oars. Only because of
them, they swim easily in the sea. These
limbs which are in the front part of their
bodies are like wings of the aeroplane.
These limbs give to the massive power for
life for sea turtles. It will be a wonderful
experience to watch sea turtles swim in
the sea.

it. The average weight of a turtle is 115
Kilogram.
The turtle which swims very fast in sea
will walk very slowly in sand. For walking
also only its flippers help. Crawling in the
sand is tiresome for it but the turtle comes
to the beach only to lay eggs.
For bird sanctuaries like Vedanthankal,
birds from foreign countries come every
year during particular months, stay there
and leave after some months. We enjoy
seeing them.
They travel from places beyond
thousands of miles and they come without
changing the season to the same place. This
is a big mystery. Some birds locate the very
same trees in which they stayed last season
and stay there again.
Ok, how do they locate their habitat?
Do they use any calendar or map?
The long day light timings and the
changes which happen in their body
depending upon the season make them
tour on migration likewise. Researchers
tell that they identify the directions and
angles of sun and some stars to find out the
particular places. God gifts some boons to
species.
There are some birds called ‘Birds of
paradise’. They live in New Guinea and
islands around it. Among the birds of the
world, this bird has the highest level of
decorations. The colorful appearances
and beauty of this bird cannot be easily
described in words. So beautiful it is!
The head and neck will be in shining
bright yellow color. The chest will be like
black velvet cloth, soft and cotton like.
The throat will be in emerald green. The
other parts of the body will be teak in color.
The wings will have shining gold colored
feather having on the ends. The sharp ends
of feathers will be in blood red color.
A bird so beautiful is not found in any
other part of the world. So it has been
named bird of paradise.
