Did you know that we proudly serve Bravery Brewing Craft Beer in our Country Club Lounge?
We welcome our very own club members, R. Lee Ermey and Bart Avery, co-owners of Bravery Brewing in
Lancaster, California. They are celebrating their fourth year of operation. With a recent expansion from a 3 barrel
brew house to a 15 barrel brew house, they now have increased their capacity to brew 25 times more beer. You
can find 22oz bottles of Allegiance IPA and Köbi (a Kölsch-Style Ale), for your afternoon cool down after a round
of golf. We congratulate our fellow club members. We look forward to a Beer Tasting event planned with Bravery
Brewing Company in our Country Club Lounge. Please look for details coming soon, Cheers!
Attention all Members
Starting July 1, 2016 we are requesting all scorecards be turned in to the Golf Shop for posting. The Golf Shop

Respecting the wet spots
(previously published by Turfgrass Research Institute)
Golf courses can be wetter in some areas than golfers would ideally prefer. Ironically, this problem is
greatest during the dry and hot months from June through September. This is because different areas of
the course receive water and take up water very differently, and these variations are most dramatic when
water demand is highest. For example, irrigation coverage is always uneven, even with the best of
systems. As a result, while most areas on the course receive sufficient water, some area may receive too
little. To remedy this situation, and to avoid dead turf in the drier areas, irrigation systems must be
adjusted to target the dry areas that are at risk, and to deliver enough water there to keep the turf alive.
This may lead to some soggy patches in other areas of roughs and fairways, but the only other option—of
allowing the dry areas to become drier—will result in dead turf and hard soils that are difficult to
remediate. Suffering with wet spots is a small necessary evil in achieving the bigger picture goal of the
best and most consistent course performance over the longest possible period of time.
For golf courses that rely on irrigation (rather than
rain), summer is usually the most difficult time of the
year. Turf requires more water during these hot
months, and is therefore at the greatest risk of dying
from the lack of it. This means that the proper design
and operation of the irrigation system is one of the
most critical summertime procedures on the golf
course.
Unfortunately, even the best irrigation systems deliver
water unevenly—while most areas get enough water,
some areas may get too much water, and other areas
may get too little.
Adding insult to injury
This problem is compounded by the fact soil types
and drainage systems can vary around the course, and
from course to course. So even when the right amount
of water is delivered to turf, some soils (those that
have a higher percentage of sand) can absorb water
rapidly, which permits the course to stay dry even
when it is overwatered. In other soils, the water will
form puddles that will not drain from the surface, with
wet spots, while others suffer from them all summer.
Page 6
Which do you prefer?
All of this variation causes a dilemma for superintendents
and an annoyance for golfers. Superintendents can
attempt to keep the course free of wet spots, but this will
cause the formation of dry areas in some locations. The
turf here will decline due to lack of water, as in the photo
below. Eventually, club-eating, wrist-cracking bare areas
of soil will form. If severely drought stressed, the turf will
not have time to recover before the cool fall weather
arrives.
The alternative is to adjust the irrigation system so that
the dry areas receive enough water. This of course means
that more than enough water will be delivered to other
areas of the course—-i.e. wet spots will develop. But at
least the turf will be alive, and turf quality can be more
consistently maintained in all areas throughout the year.
Given this choice, while you may never love the wet spots
on the course, you may eventually come to understand
that their presence means that turf health and quality are
being taken care of.

We had 16 players show up for a great celebration Wed. June 22 at the Club bar for our winners of the Flex
League Men’s Doubles and Coed Doubles which have been playing since April 6th. Drink tickets were given out
to the players and everyone ordered dinner from the kitchen. Our winners were for the Men’s: Ron Gass and Bart
Moran who went undefeated with 7 wins and did not drop a set & the Coed was won by Joe Jones & Ron
Columbo with 4 wins. During dinner, our Tennis Committee met and had an open forum discussing the wants,
needs and direction we want to grow our Tennis Club.
Mixed Doubles starts now and ends August 31 with 12 teams competing at the 6.0-6.5 level and 7 at the 6.5-7.0
USTA level.
Next Social is Wimbledon Sunday July 10 at 3:30pm.
Our first Summer Camp was hot as can be with 8 students playing games of all sorts and learning fundamentals in
Tennis and Golf at the Putting green and Driving Range with our Pros Captain Kirk and Annie Barker. Free swim
followed with lunch.
You can sign up for the remaining 5 camps ending August 5th.

WGA NEWS
WGA Club Champion
ANNE CAULFIELD
For two years in a row, our WGA has seen two new Club Champions! The Club Champion for 2016 is Anne
Caulfield! As she so profoundly states, “All of the practice sessions and the many lessons have finally paid off!” In
our Club Championship Tournament which took place during the past two weekends, Andrea Dilger is the first
runner-up, and Tess del Rosario ranks third in the championship flight. Congratulations, Anne, and thank you for
demonstrating the determination and tenacity required of a real champion!.
The results of this tournament from the other two divisions are as follows: In the First Division, Darleen Lockhart
is the First Gross Winner and June Rice is the First Net Winner. In the Second Division, Vicky Medlin is The First
Gross Winner, and Sandi Oest is the First Net Winner. Finally, the Championship Putter for 2016 is Vicky Medlin
but you also need to realize that to achieve this title, Vicky had to defeat Lana Palumbo, Andrea Dilger, and Sandi
Oest! Congratulations to all our winners and participants who from one day to the next could not be sure of what
the weather would bring to their games.
At the present time, our WGA members are participating in the Summer Ringer. This individual tournament
consists of each member competing with herself as she golf's six rounds of 18 holes. Two flighted divisions of
ladies are participating: this tournament started on June 7th and will end on July 18th. The goal is to achieve the
lowest gross and net scores. However, the lady who has the lowest overall net score will be the champion of this
net tournament.
WGA Senior Club Championship Tournament were on Monday and Tuesday, June 27and 28, results are on page
11. In the not –too-distant future, our Grand AVCC/WGA Invitational Tournament on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday, October 4, 5, and 6. Our WGA Committee is already hard at work planning this later special event so
please put these October dates on your calendars.
As the warm weather comes upon us, I will probably be in the minority who will be missing the cooler weather and
the strong winds. Please drink plenty of water and golf well in the sun!

PRO SHOP


Warm Up:
 Try to arrive soon enough to give yourself time to warm up properly.
 Work your way though the bag, beginning with the short irons, moving onto the mid-and long irons and then the

woods.
It's often a good idea to finish warming up by hitting a few soft wedge shots before heading for the practice green and
hitting a few putts.
Don't hit hundreds of balls and leave your game on the practice tee.

First Tee:
 Check the scorecard to learn any local rules.
 Local rules apply only to the specific course you are playing.
 If your playing companions suggest a match, it's a good idea to make sure everyone is comfortable with the stakes.
 Make sure to place an identifying mark on your ball and inform the other players the type and number ball you are
playing.
Avoid Slow play:






When your group is not keeping up with the pace of play of the group in front of you:
Walk at a reasonable speed between shots.
Begin planning your next shot as you approach the ball by studying the strength and direction of the wind.
When you reach your ball, check the lie, select your club, visualize your swing and shot, and then play your shot.
From the time you select your club until you actually hit your shot, you should take no more than 30 to 45 seconds.
If you aren't ready to play when it is your turn, encourage one of your fellow players to play.

The Antelope Valley Country Club Team Play Ladies had a stellar Season.
Here’s a recap of our season:
Our AVCC team players were victorious competing against Friendly Hills Country Club, South Hills Country Club
and Lake Arrowhead Country Club for the WSCGA Group 3 title. Then we went on to beat Rio Bravo Country
Club in a playoff for the SWCGA Divisional title. We were also successful in eliminating Oakmont Country Club
in a playoff for the WSCGA Regional title. All those victories brought us to the 2-game WSCGA Net
Championships, Antelope Valley Country Club versus Red Hills Country Club. The first game was played at Red
Hill Country Club and the final game was played at our home course, Thursday, 6/30. Red Hill won the final
match with a total score of 7-5. Antelope Valley CC Team Play ladies were the runners-up.
In the First Championship team match held at Red Hill Country Club, our team players were overwhelmed to see
Jon Jaress and Freddie Artim! These 2 men drove all the way to Rancho Cucamonga for the sole purpose of
supporting their ladies team.! I cannot begin to express how much that meant to each one of us. Thank you so
much!
Thank you to our WGA who continue to support the ladies team play in team breakfasts and a portion of the cost
of team shirts. A heartfelt thank-you to Sandy Ortiz who helped make the breakfast and lunch choices affordable
and to Chef Leo who always makes it delicious! A huge thank-you to our Head Pro, Annie Barker, for her
continued support of our WGA and in particular our ladies team play. And our hats go off to Mike Belleville who
continues to make our course the best it can be for our team play rounds! We appreciate you all very much!
After the WSCGA Representative, Joanne Farmer and the Red Hill ladies left the building, you may have seen us
on the patio celebrating the fact that we made it to the final Championship round. If you were not there...you
missed a good one. Our ladies jumped into “Poppies Pond” (aka AVCC swimming pool) in our team uniforms!
How cool is that? During our celebration, a few people bought the team a round of drinks.
Thank you Sally Szwenik...Thank you Dr. Britt Smith, and again thank you Jon Jaress...YOU ROCK!
Thank you to all our dedicated ladies for their hard work, hours of practice and personal sacrifice, who are
outstanding representatives of the Antelope Valley Country Club. Just a fun fact...the last time we enjoyed this
much success was in 1994!
It’s been an amazing year and we look forward to TEAM 2017!
