Sports Day at the
Outrigger on the Lagoon- Fiji
By Una Murray and Jane Turaga
The first-ever Staff Sports Day in the history of the Outrigger
on the Lagoon – Fiji (FOR) was held on July 20. The day started off
with General Manager Darren Shaw thanking the familia for giving
their free time to take part in this exciting event and the Sports Day
Committee members for organizing it. Committee Chairman Jacob
Pau’u thanked the management of the FOR for hosting the event,
which not only allowed the staff to share the Outrigger Bula Spirit
with each other, but also fostered the spirit of teamwork.

It was just a week ago

announcing Outrigger’s

deluxe Viridian Resort

resort town of Noosa,
Australia. At that time, I
indicated a second Australia

forthcoming, and here it is.

Sports Day at the
Outrigger on the Lagoon- Fiji
Continued from page 1
The resort’s staff was divided into four
teams: Team Blue (Food & Beverage, Kitchen),
Team Green (Housekeeping), Team Red
(Human Resources, Engineering, Activities,
and Bebe Spa), and Team Yellow (Front Office,
Security, Sales, and Finance). Each competed in
various land and water events.
This competition was not only a day of fun,
but also the “trials” for the upcoming Annual
Sigatoka Bilibili (Bamboo) Boat Race. The
race, comprised of 19 separate events, is held
on Fiji Day in October, and all the resorts and
hotels on the Coral Coast and Denarau Island
in Nadi take part. The FOR participates in
this event every year, and the Staff Sports Day
helped select the team members who will be
representing the FOR at the annual race.
The preparation for the Sports Day had
been going on for months, and it proved really
worthwhile, because at the end of the day,
everyone went home with a smile and cherished
memories. With the theme “Sharing the Bula
Spirit,” the Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji was
able to prove to the world that the Bula Spirit is
alive in all of us, and we are still the best when
it comes to Fijian hospitality.

Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff Annual Picnic

It was an evening of fun, food, games,
and camaraderie that was enjoyed by all who
attended. The kids really enjoyed the cotton
candy and popcorn machines; the younger kids
got a big kick from their fishing expeditions;
while the older kids enjoyed the egg tossing
and water balloon games.
It was a wonderful fun-filled event, but most
importantly, it was a time to show our appreciation
to all the ‘ohana and thank them for all their hard
work and commitment to excellence.

Moments of Aloha
Outrigger Condominium Collection and OHANA East
“This letter of appreciation is written on behalf of the entire
Department of Public Safety. It is to commend the Outrigger
Hotels and Resorts Corporation for the timely and generous
assistance in the aftermath of our recent tragedy involving
the murder of our Deputy Sheriff, Daniel Sanchez. As you
know, Deputy Sanchez is the young man who interceded in
the attempted armed robbery of the Osake Sushi Bar by a
gunman who entered the Sushi Bar firing a pistol. Deputy
Sanchez stopped the robbery and shooting by taking down
the robber, at the cost of his own life. Deputy Director of
Law Enforcement, James Propotnick, has informed me
that he placed a call to his friend, the Vice-President of the
Condominium Division, Mr. Steve Winter asking whether
it would be possible to make a room available to the mother
of Officer Sanchez, Robina Browne, Our Department had
just brought Mrs. Browne to Oahu, from the Big Island,
to be with her son during his fight for life at the hospital.
Mr. Winter, I am told, passed on the request to you [Barry
Wallace] and to the Manager of the Outrigger [OHANA]
East Hotel, Shawn Usami, and within 15 minutes had a
suite made ready for Mrs. Browne, at no cost to her. Mrs.
Browne would have had a very difficult time in financing
the following one-week stay, had it not been for the help of
Outrigger Hotels. It is this type of community concern that
makes the officers under my command willing to serve the
public, knowing that people do care, and show it by taking
action. Outrigger Hotels and Resorts did just that, and again,
you have our thanks and our gratitude.”

Outrigger Luana Waikiki
“I just wanted to thank you for the excellent service I
received at the Outrigger Luana Waikiki. My group arrived
late (about 5 a.m.) and John [Jay] (the desk clerk) had
everything ready for us. All we needed to do was give him
our credit cards to process, which took about 30 seconds, and
we were on our way to some much-needed rest. John even
made little cards with the last names and room numbers of
those in our group so we didn’t even have to spend time with
that. Thanks again!”

The agreement between Outrigger and Twin Towns
includes our managing the four-and-a-half-star resort’s two
highrise hotel towers – the 12-month-old Harbour Tower of
197 suites and the original Ocean Tower with 116 hotel rooms
and approximately 30 suites. A $1 million (AUD $1.2 million)
refurbishment of the Ocean Tower is to take place following
the area’s high season.
Located at the twin towns of Coolangatta and Tweed
Heads, astride the border of Queensland and New South Wales,
the resort is only a few minutes walk from Coolangatta Beach
and the Tweed River and the area’s many visitor attractions and
charter boat operators. Cliff Olson, Outrigger’s Vice President
of Operations for Australia, says Twin Towns is undoubtedly the
Tweed’s most recognized leisure and entertainment landmark
and has built a very solid following over the years.
Pending approval by members and owners, Outrigger
will assume management of the resort’s Harbour and Ocean
Towers beginning November 1. Twin Towns Services Club’s
gaming, entertainment, conference and food and beverage
facilities will stay under the Club’s control.
General Manager of Twin Towns Services Club, Rob
Smith, said the Club was seeking the expertise of a recognized
global hotel group such as Outrigger to focus its efforts on the
project’s accommodation operations. Our previous operations
at large-scale resorts in Coolangatta and on the Tweed Coast,
combined with our proven performance, were key factors in
the Club’s board recommending Outrigger.
We certainly know the area. Twin Towns Resort is literally a
five-minute drive from the properties we had previously opened
and successfully managed (Outrigger on the Beach at Salt and
Outrigger Coolangatta Beach Resort), and we will be tapping

into our previous sales and marketing
networks and databases to build on Twin
Towns’ great name and reputation.
Just a 10-minute drive from Gold
Coast Airport, which is experiencing
considerable growth, we will use our
marketing networks and industry
partners to bring more visitors to this
beautiful part of Australia that is a tried
and proven holiday playground for both
domestic and international vacationers.
This week’s agreement heralds a
busy period for Outrigger’s Australian
operations, with further resort signings
expected within the next six months, plus
the new five-star Outrigger O-CE-N Bali
Resort scheduled to open this December.
