(Dr. Richard Kelley is travelling.
His column will return on February 23.)
Effective yesterday, February 15,

Improving the Guest’s Experience
By Una Murray
The Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji (FOR) continually strives to improve its
guests experience. One way the FOR achieves this goal is by having a continuing
in-house education program on working in socially-diverse environments. Training
Manager Naomi Waqawai coordinates this wonderful educational program.
Fiji is a popular destination for Japanese travelers. In order to better serve
these guests, Japanese Coordinator Kalesi Naqinoca is currently teaching FOR
employees basic Japanese and educating them on Japanese customs.

Page New Uniforms and Inspiration
at the Outrigger Waikiki
By Ethan Chang
The Outrigger Waikiki on the
Beach (OWK) rolled out their new
staff uniforms this week. The event was
marked by a celebration with the entire
OWK ‘ohana as well as the designers,
Sig Zane and Kuha‘o Zane.
This special event included a series
of workshops focusing on the Hawaiian
art of ‘ohe kāpala or bamboo/stamp
printing, where employees gained a
better understanding of the processes
and techniques used in creating some of
the designs and patterns. As part of the
festivities, employees modeled various
uniforms, all incorporating the new
beachfront design.
Kekaulai‘o, The Significant Cord,
was the name given to the design by
Sig Zane. The kaula (cord) represents
our origins and “binds us to our values
and traditions”.
Mahalo to Sig and his ‘ohana for
the new design and inspiration for the
Outrigger Waikiki ‘ohana.

Outrigger Waikiki Celebrates the Year of the Rat
Continued from page 1
The celebration kicked-off with a fantastic fashion show
with some of our employees of Korean heritage modeling
elegant Korean wear. Not long ago, traditional Korean
clothes were worn everyday. Today, they are reserved for
special occasions such as weddings, holidays, and celebrating
the New Year.
A Chinese dance troupe, made up of employees, preformed
a Chinese Fan Dance in honor of the New Year celebration.
Headed by Janice Ng, the all-employee group performed a great
dance number called “The Beauty at West Lake.”
Other events included food and candy sampling and Chinese
calligraphy. The celebration concluded with fireworks and
blessings, complete with a traditional lion dance throughout the
hotel to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck in the New Year.
A special mahalo to Ivy Kwok, Janice Ng, Barbara Lam,
and all of our spirited volunteers for working so hard in
putting on such a wonderful event for guests, employees, and
the community to experience.

These six properties are also included in the Choice
Privileges rewards program, enabling members to either earn
or redeem points for their stays. With this new alliance, the
more than six million Choice Privileges members from around
the globe now have the opportunity to stay at these hotels.
“This alliance is a great way for us to reward our Choice
Privileges members, giving them the option to earn and
redeem points at six premier Hawaii hotels,” said Bill
Carlson, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Choice
Hotels. “Additionally, this alliance will enable us to capture
new business and encourage our Choice Privileges members
to stay more often at our properties to reach a goal of reward
nights in Hawaii.”
Although the end result is simple -- more new business
for the six properties, which is great news at a time when
the overall flow of visitors to Hawaii is slowing -- success
in this effort depends on many different departments, from
IS and Wholesale, Database and Accounting, Revenue
Management, Marketing and Legal, all the way through
to hotel operations. Mahalo to everyone involved for your
patience and creative support.
The best news is that it’s already clear that the alliance is
working, with more than two dozen bookings made in the
first days the system went live. We anticipate a significant
increase in bookings once Choice launches the full marketing
communication plan to its members in March.
