THE DECLINE OF FAMILY VALUES,
lamenting the number of children
forced to grow up without strong
role models in their lives.
they talk about the breakdown of community in
general, pointing to the growing division between
those who have the most and those who have
the least, and worrying about how today’s
problems are going to affect future generations.
AT THE Y,
we’re well aware of the challenges facing society these days. But you
won’t catch us waiting for someone else to solve the problems. Instead,
over and over again, when an issue confronts our community, the Y is...
So let someone else rail against what’s wrong with society.
We’ll be rolling up our sleeves and working to change it. Let others
complain about the way things are done today. We’ll be coming
together to create a new way of doing things today and tomorrow.
Let the world, whine, worry and wonder what to do next.

As 2012 Metropolitan Board of Directors
Chair, HELENA RYAN draws on her passion for
the Y cause as she provides valued leadership
and forges personal connections with Y kids,
volunteers and staff. And as Chair of our
Strategic Planning Steering Committee, she
will continue providing leadership through
2014 as the Y establishes our next long-range
strategic plan.
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
THE Y IS TAKING ACTION TO
EVERY KID IN EVERY COMMUNITY
Some children are lucky. They never have to worry about where their next
meal is coming from. They never have to walk home from school in fear of
what might happen in their own neighborhoods. They never have to wonder
how they’re going to pay for clothes, food, school supplies and college.
They always have someone around to help them with their homework,
drive them to soccer practice, make them feel loved, cared for and valued.
Unfortunately, not all children grow up with such advantages.

We can get angry about the wrongs in our world. We can conduct
studies and create charts and graphs that detail the growing
differences between the upper and lower class. We can shake our
fingers at a society that created such disparity. Instead,

The Y is integrating education and reading into all
our programs, especially summer camps. By making
these programs available in challenged communities,
the Y keeps many kids from falling behind during the
summer and allows them to start the next school
year at the same level as their classmates. Our Youth
Development curriculums give parents peace of mind
and reduce their stress knowing that we focus on:

REINFORCING READING, which guards against
dropping out
ENCOURAGING HEALTHY LIVING, which curbs
childhood obesity
HELPING DISADVANTAGED KIDS
BUILD CONFIDENCE AND HOPE
FOR THE FUTURE
Children who grow up surrounded by poverty can feel
powerless to change their path in life. To help change
this, we recently expanded the Y Links2Learning
Program to the South Orlando Y in connection to
the Lockheed Technology Center. Kids learn golf
as a lifelong sport and the values, sportsmanship
and self-esteem that go with it, and receive academic
support they need to win in school and life.
A PROVEN TRACK RECORD IN MIDDLE
SCHOOL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We don’t just talk about the success of our Youth
Development programs, we invite the measurement
of outcomes. For 14 years, our Afterschool Zone
middle school programs have had a real impact on
more than 160,000 students’ lives. When the Y
comes to a community, attendance and grade point
averages go up and the number of juvenile justice
referrals goes down.
PROVIDING PARENTS WITH THE
SUPPORT THEY NEED TO RAISE
GREAT KIDS
When children from single parent or dual parent
working households are left unsupervised after
school, they can make bad decisions and get
involved with destructive behaviors. In 42 Orange
County Public Schools (OCPS), the Y turns free time
into “Y-Time,” when children are provided a safe
and enriching environment after school. Last year,
the Y provided $2,044,000 in scholarships and
subsidies to these programs.

It’s because of this
proven track record that
the YUSA is partnering
with the YMCA of Central
Florida to develop new
national models for youth
development programs.
In partnership with the
Harvard-initiated BELL
organization, the Central
Florida Y was selected to
launch an award-winning
summer learning program
that will be offered free to
100 kids this summer at
McCoy Elementary School,
a Title 1 institution. This
model builds upon the YUSA
afterschool partnership
program already
established at McCoy in
partnership with Orange
County Public Schools
(OCPS).
At West Oaks Elementary
School, we use the
nationally-recognized
YMCA Reads! Program,
teaching reading skills to
students in Kindergarten,
1st and 2nd grade who are
currently reading below
grade level.
In 2012 Chase Bank funded
our partnership with OCPS
to develop an afterschool
and summer reading
curriculum at Union Park
Middle School that will
become an OCPS replicable
model for outcome-based
programs.
GENTLEMEN OF EXCELLENCE
SETTING GOALS. REACHING HIGHER IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
Our new Middle School Achievers Program (MAP) draws on the Y’s successful Teen Achievers
model to provide the early mentoring and academic support younger students need to get
ahead of college and career planning. The young Gentlemen of Excellence, a small group
within our MAP, formed in 2012. Strong, handsome, polite and confident, this is not your
typical group of boisterous pre-teens, and not just because they wear bow ties. They are
committed to learning the values, good manners and empathy that will help them grow up
to be the caring, responsible citizens of tomorrow. And with research showing that 90%
of children who participate in programs like MAP graduate on time, the Y is expanding this
important program to schools all across Central Florida.

THE Y IS TAKING ACTION TO MAKE THE
ROAD TO
WELLNESS
MORE PERSONAL EVERY DAY
The numbers don’t lie. Half of all Americans have at least one chronic disease – heart disease,
diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer – many of which are related to obesity. Nearly
one-third of Floridians are obese, and if that trend continues, the number will double by 2030.
Things are not looking better for the next generation, with one-third of Florida children obese
or overweight. As a result, diabetes has doubled in children and tripled in teens over the past 30
years. These realities are why U.S. health care costs are projected to skyrocket to $344 billion
by 2018, with the Centers for Disease Control warning that obesity-related conditions could
bankrupt our national healthcare system if the crisis isn’t addressed. Our community and nation
are facing an unprecedented health crisis.
We could spend our days quoting scary statistics. We
could look around for someone to blame, from the fast
food restaurants to soda manufacturers. Instead,

REINVENTING THE OSCEOLA Y TO
STRENGTHEN A COMMUNITY IN NEED
With increasing unemployment rates and
foreclosures putting added burden on the families
of Osceola County in the past few years, the Y knew
it was time to take action. In 2012, we completed a
significant renovation of the Osceola County
Y, transforming it into a vibrant new community
hub. Every day at the new Family Center, kids
learn life lessons, people of all ages grow healthier
and stronger, and an entire community comes to
together to provide mutual support to their friends
and neighbors. Now, despite troubled times, the
foundation of the community is stronger than ever.
JOINING FORCES WITH HEALTH CARE
PROVIDERS TO CONNECT PATIENT
TREATMENT WITH PREVENTION AND
REHABILITATION SERVICES
A remarkable transformation is under way at
the Frank DeLuca YMCA Family Center with
a revolutionary partnership with the Munroe
Regional Medical Center. Thanks to this significant
commitment from the hospital, the Frank DeLuca Y
will feature a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center
in which people with cardiovascular, pulmonary and
orthopedic issues will receive top-notch medical
treatment in a friendly Y setting.
TACKLING CHRONIC DISEASE WITH
COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS
People suffering from serious health problems need
help to take charge of their health. And they’ll find it
at the Y with personalized and supervised programs
such as the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program
and health education in our youth programs. With
our support, individuals get to the root of their
challenges and learn exactly how to change their
eating habits, their exercise routines, and ultimately,
their lives.
DEBBIE AND HOWIE APPLE
PEDALING FOR PARKINSON’S: VITAL HEALTH SUPPORT
After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease three years ago, Howie Apple –
endurance cyclist, marathon runner, retired biomedical engineer – responded by
taking his health into his own hands. As members of the YMCA Crosby Wellness
Center, they helped launch the Pedaling for Parkinson’s group in conjunction with
the Winter Park Health Foundation and the Pedaling for Parkinson’s Foundation.
Now nearly 20 people strong, the group meets three times a week for vigorous
workouts on stationary bikes which track participants’ progress that can then
be shared with doctors. While not a cure, the routine, combined with traditional
medical care, appears to delay the disease’s progress and has been shown to
reduce symptoms by as much as 35%.

CENTERS FOR LIFELONG HEALTH,
WELLNESS AND DISEASE PREVENTION
The Y has always been more than a health club. We work to develop people from the inside
out, with the goal of inspiring men, women and children to change their lives, not just their
looks. And now our approach is coming to life in a more exciting way than ever at the new
Dr. P. Phillips Y and the Frank DeLuca Y.
Equipped with programs and
services that encompass the full
spectrum of health and wellness,
these Ys are reinventing the way
people think about and work
towards a healthy lifestyle. The
new Y model will include:
HEALTHY CAFÉS, where members can
grab a nutritious meal after working out
or learn how to prepare healthy, delicious
food for themselves and their families in Y
healthy living teaching kitchens.
HEALTH CONSULTATION ROOMS where
members can meet with trained Y and
medical professionals who can assess
their current level of health and develop
plans for achieving wellness goals.
REHABILITATION CENTERS where
members will receive therapy and enroll
in prescriptive programs for injuries, cardio
rehab, post-cancer strengthening and
other threatening health issues.
FITNESS CENTERS that offer personalized services for people at every point on
the continuum of health. Whether they are
a health seeker just starting out, a moderate exerciser ready to step up, or a highly
motivated member seeking specific training
support to reach personal goals, the new Y
will be ready to help.
SWIMMING AND AQUATICS activities
in easy-access pools that enable older
adults to stay active and independent,
even when dealing with age-related issues
such as orthopedic problems, back pain, or
knee and hip replacement.
The Dr. P. Phillips YMCA Family Center is the community’s front porch, a
place where neighbors and friends can depend on to come together for
life-enriching Y programs. So, we are answering the call by enhancing
the Dr. P. Phillips Y as the model Y of the future to deliver even more
progressive prevention services to the community.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
And now, we are taking another important
step forward. The Y has incorporated
reading into the curriculum of all our youth
development initiatives so that kids can
keep flexing their brains even after school
lets out. In our after school programs,
elementary and middle school students read
about the activities that they love so they
learn that reading can be fun. And in addition
to adding reading components to our summer
camp programs, the Y now has real school

Some communities in Central Florida need a little extra support from
organizations who commit to help not just one day, one month or one year,
but sustainably. The Y can’t look the other way. We reject the idea that some
communities must settle for fewer resources and opportunities than others.
The Y is taking action – and has invested even more in 2012 to make the Y
available in the most economically challenged communities.
REINVENTING OUR SWIMMING POOLS
MAKING EXERCISE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE
When high-impact and heavy-resistance exercises are just too much to handle,
water-based workouts offer a great way to stay active and healthy. That’s why
we are so proud of the new pools planned for the Winter Park and Blanchard Ys.
Designed for easy access, the pools enable members of all ages and abilities to
participate in aquatic exercise and maintain the dignity and independence they
deserve. And with fun fountains, a safe climbing area and playful water features for
kids, our pools are a perfect place for the whole family to come together, cool off
and forget the stress of the day.
In Osceola, with the support of Dr. Phillips Charities, Wayne Densch
Charities and the Osceola County government, families are connecting
at the Y, where kids receive quality child care while their parents work
and the entire family can come together to take control of their personal
health and find opportunities to give back to others in their community.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
SERVING DESERVING FAMILIES AND
COMMUNITIES THROUGH OUTREACH Ys
UNITING COMMUNITIES ACROSS
CENTRAL FLORIDA AND THE WORLD.
Eleven of the Y’s 20 local Family Centers are Outreach Ys, which serve Pine Hills, Tangelo Park,
South Orlando and other financially challenged
communities. In 2012, we provided $4,213,000 in
community services for these Ys and supported
51% of members with scholarships that enabled
them to take advantage of all our offerings. By
providing Y-quality programs, services and facilities to people who truly need them the most, the Y
is helping families reduce stress and grow stronger.
We’re also creating vibrant centers of pride, activity
and connection for the entire community.
While Central Florida has grown at all edges of
the community, the Y continues to bring people
together - united in a shared cause to strengthen
the foundation of the community. In 2012, more
than 2000 people joined us from across the
region at our two annual events: our 21st Annual
Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast in
commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with
guest speaker U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry Black,
and Gigi Graham for our 18th Annual Celebration
of Prayer. This year, members and staff from
Brevard County to Marion County sent more than
20,000 shoeboxes filled with gifts, and daily items
we take for granted to kids in war and poverty-torn
countries worldwide. Uniting the community through
Operation Christmas Child is a great example of
action behind the Y cause.
KEEPING OUR DOORS OPEN TO
EVERY MAN, WOMAN AND CHILD
WHO NEEDS US
Last year, the Y provided $3,035,000 in
scholarships to support 10,057 individuals and
families in need. And we will continue to welcome
individuals, year after year, who cannot afford the
Y on their own.
WE TAKE ACTION by convening over 2000 guests
annually for our Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer
Breakfast in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., and our Celebration of Prayer Breakfast.
For the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. event,
guest speaker Barry C. Black, 62nd U.S. Senate
Chaplain, inspired an audience of more than 1000
from Brevard, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, Lake,
Marion and other nearby counties.

Y and our cause, our organization has
been transformed.
THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE 10 YEARS AS
THE PRIMARY SUPPORT AGENCY FOR
DR. PHILLIPS CHARITIES.
Dr. Phillips Charities has taken action to
empower the Y to unite diverse communities, to establish facilities in underserved
communities and to impact tens of thousands of kids and families throughout
Central Florida.
Jim Hinson led the first capital campaign to create the Dr. Phillips YMCA
30 years ago, and today continues to
challenge us to think bigger and further
into the future. Today, with Dr. Phillips
Charities support, the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA
Family Center is poised to become the
most progressive Y Healthy Living center
in the country with holistic approaches to
preventative health and wellness. We will
be adding even more wellness personalization for members with diet and nutrition support, more physical rehabilitation
and clinical support in partnership with
area hospitals and healthcare providers.
Because of Dr. Phillips Charities’ capital investments in our dynamic Family
Centers at the Downtown Orlando and
Roper Ys, we are helping members of all
ages and abilities avert obesity and stay
strong in body, mind and spirit. Their historic commitment to the Aquatic & Family
Center enables us to host thousands of
teens year round as one of the leading
swim, diving and water polo training and
competition centers in the U.S.
Our Youth Development initiatives have
touched countless kids’ lives because of
Dr. Phillips Charities. In 1999 they took
action with the Y to launch SafeStart,
our infant water survival skills program
which has now made more than 12,000
infants and toddlers safer around
water. As a consequence of Dr. Phillips
Charities’ generous capital contributions,
youth in the region’s most economically
challenged neighborhoods have safe
places to go during non-school hours for
youth sports, camps, swimming and other
activities that help them gain confidence
and self-esteem while interacting with
positive role models.
The Dr. Phillips Charities partnership
has been vital to fulfilling our commitment
to Social Responsibility and providing
opportunities to those less fortunate.
With their help, we serve neighborhoods
where working parents have a hard time
putting food on the table and affording
healthy, supervised activities for kids
after school and over the summer. Thanks
to Dr. Phillips Charities, we have been
able to raise the bar at our Osceola Y
with significant renovations to better
serve the men, women and children of
Osceola County. With critically important
facility improvements made possible with
contributions from Dr. Phillips Charities,
our South Orlando and Wayne Densch
Ys are centers of pride and activity
where neighbors come together and
get connected.

WINTER PARK
HEALTH FOUNDATION
As the community’s greatest advocate
for Healthy Living through research and
collaboration, the Winter Park Health
Foundation has made possible two of our
leading Family Centers: the Peggy & Philip
B. Crosby Wellness Center in Winter Park
and Center for Health & Wellness in
Oviedo. Beginning in 1999, the Foundation
set the stage for the Y’s hospital partnerships
to provide rehabilitation and medicallybased wellness support for members.
With complimentary missions, in 2012
the Foundation has convened the “Crosby
Collaborative” with the Foundation, the Y
and Florida Hospital to create a Health
& Wellness Neighborhood as a model for
preventative and wellness continuum of care
throughout the Central Florida region and
beyond. And, each year, the Foundation steps
up with significant support for our Scholarship
Campaign. Thank you Winter Park Health
Foundation for taking action with us.
WAYNE DENSCH CHARITIES
Wayne Densch Charities’ purpose is to provide
opportunities for people to acquire the
knowledge, skills, desirable qualities of behavior
and character, wisdom and general competence
that will enable them to fully participate in
and enjoy the social, political, economic and
intellectual life of the community. The Y is
privileged to share in the generosity of Wayne
Densch Charities and the Leonard Williams
family to fulfill their philanthropic goals.
The Wayne Densch, J. Douglas Williams, and
South Orlando Ys are thriving and engender
community engagement and pride within
these communities because of their thoughtful
contributions. Their impact is felt each day with
healthy, sustainable operations made possible
by our long-standing partnership that doesn’t
wait to resolve community disparities.
FRANK DELUCA
The Marion County YMCA Family Center has
been renamed The Frank DeLuca YMCA in
honor of Ocala philanthropist Frank DeLuca.
His signature gift to the Marion capital
campaign is putting the Y on track to serve
nearly 35,000 adults and children a year and
is essential to ensure the Y sustains the high
level quality of programs offered within the
community. Originally an active Y youth in
Orlando, Frank DeLuca thankfully sees that
the Y builds character in our children, remains
focused on addressing the changing needs
of Marion County’s families and improving
the overall wellness of the community. We
welcome Frank DeLuca as our a vital partner in
Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social
Responsibility.
MUNROE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
Munroe Regional Medical Center is our newest
healthcare partner in an innovative healthcare
collaboration focused on continually improving
and managing the health of the Marion
County community. With the Frank DeLuca
YMCA Family Center, the hospital intends to
tackle the burden of chronic diseases, such
as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and
obesity with onsite health screenings, risk
assessments, health and wellness education
classes, nutritional counseling, support
groups, diabetes and other chronic disease
management programs, therapies and even
on-site medical services, specializing in
preventative and wellness care.
THE ROPER FAMILY
The Roper Family has been involved at every
level of our organization including Barbara
Roper’s service as the first female board chair
of the YMCA of the USA. Through their generosity and support of the Family Center that
bears their name, the Burt and Barbara Roper
Family have been the catalyst in transforming
the Roper YMCA Family Center into a healthy
and vibrant environment with a swimming pool
and aquatics program that has contributed
to the safety of our children in West Orange
County since 1978. The Roper family’s legacy
of dedication to the Y is a perfect example of
the crucial role our partners play in our mission.
FLORIDA HOSPITAL
Few organizations are as committed to Healthy
Living as we are in developing the preventative
health services that will change how healthcare
is delivered than our partner Florida Hospital.
Our partnership is changing lives in our Ys with
rehabilitation centers at our Crosby and Dr.
Phillips YMCA Family Centers, in taking the
Y Diabetes Prevention Program to their
employees, and in the development of a Health
and Wellness Neighborhood concept at
the Winter Park campus with the Winter Park
Health Foundation.
DARDEN
In 1993 with the largest capital gift ever
made to the YMCA of Central Florida, Darden
changed the trajectory of the Y and continues
to set the pace for committed partnerships.
The global company’s record capital gift was
the spark to set a new standard for Y facilities
throughout Central Florida. And that was
not enough. Darden has continued to provide
substantial scholarship support to Teen
Achievers, capital support to South Orlando
and Wayne Densch Ys and to the sustained
growth of our Youth Development programs
association-wide.
ORANGE COUNTY
Since 1997, Orange County Government
has committed to a Y partnership that has
since impacted the lives of hundreds of
thousands of its residents throughout
the county. For family and youth services,
the county helped open the Blanchard Park
YMCA, co-launched the Afterschool Zone
middle school programs in 14 OCPS schools,
partnered in making the Tangelo Park and
South Orlando Ys exciting community assets
for youth and families, and provided resources
to the Aquatic and Family Center to become
one of the finest training and competition
aquatic centers in the country. Additionally,
with a focus on its senior residents and kids
who need extra academic support to get ahead,
Orange County partners with us to provide
wellness support in 22 senior centers and
extracurricular reading support to students
in the Apopka/Zellwood communities.
OUR Y PARTNERS: TAKING ACTION IS A TEAM EFFORT
OSCEOLA COUNTY
As home to an international employee base
who serve more than seven million tourists
annually, Osceola County has looked to the Y as
a trusted partner in Social Responsibility to
ensure its residents have a safe place to come
together for healthy youth and family support.
Together, Osceola County Government
and the Y have committed the resources over
the past 20 years to make the Osceola Y a
source of pride and life-enriching programs
for Youth Development sports, swim safety,
and academic support programs, plus Healthy
Living programs such as diabetes prevention
and group exercises for a community that
speak 62 different languages.
WALT DISNEY WORLD
One of the most recognized companies in
the world, Walt Disney World recognizes the
power of early childhood development and
how employee families need quality childcare
to be their best at work. As a result, they
partnered with us in 2004 to open two Y
early childhood development centers on
property to provide Y-quality early childhood
development care seven days a week from
6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Serving about 1000
families a day since, the Y continues to deliver
an educational model that incorporates all the
tenants of exceptional Youth Development.
LAKE NONA/TAVISTOCK
Together, with our other partners in OCPS,
City of Orlando and Orlando Health, Lake
Nona made possible an educational model
others worldwide are seeking to duplicate – the
Lake Nona YMCA/Northlake Community
School. The shared use facility is a vibrant
anchor for its community, open 7 days a week,
362 days a year, bringing students, parents
and teachers together with higher academic
performance, parental involvement and healthy
living. We are proud of our partnership in
Tavistock whose commitment was recognized
by the Urban Land Institute with the national
Award of Excellence for “maximizing resources

While Lockheed Martin does business services
worldwide, its commitment to community
service is purely local with the Y as a thankful
partner. Initially partnering with the company
to provide corporate wellness support to
employees, Lockheed has since focused its
support on impacting the lives of area youth.
In 2008 Lockheed Martin and the Central
Florida YMCA partnered to open the nation’s
first community-based high-tech learning
center at our Tangelo Park YMCA to engage
students in math and science, creating a
foundation for success in the classroom and in
future careers. Since then, they have provided
resources to open a second Technology
Center at the South Orlando Y, to support
the Teen Achievers engineering cluster,
and contribute annually to our scholarship
campaigns.
THE BERT MARTIN FOUNDATION
One of our legacy philanthropic partners, The
Bert Martin Foundation, made possible in
2012 the expansion of our revolutionary
Links2Learning program to the South
Orlando Y. Engaging 3rd-12th grade school
kids in a combination learning and golf
program, The Bert Martin Foundation support
provides kids with homework help and teaches
them life skills one swing at a time. Thanks to
this support, urban youth will have access to a
life sport they would otherwise would not have
access to.
MICROSOFT
Microsoft’s well-known philanthropic commitment has landed at the YMCA of Central Florida
in 2012 with a partnership committed to
providing computer access and mentoring
to Y kids who need it most. Local Microsoft
professionals give their personal time and
corporate resources to make sure youth at our
South Orlando Y have the support they need
in our Technology Center and Links2Learning program. Their commitment to the Y community has extended to donating computers
to our afterschool programs where kids may
otherwise not have computer access at home
to get homework done. We are grateful for the
commitment of this caring global company.

While Pepsi has a worldwide business focus,
the company has been there for us on a
local level as a gracious corporate partner
for 20 years. From seeding our Hispanic
Achievers program, to making sizable capital
contributions in outreach communities, to
improving our sports facility signage and
providing invaluable leadership to our board,
Pepsi is there for the YMCA of Central Florida
year after year. Ahead, Pepsi will be supporting
the Y Healthy Living initiative by helping
us provide members with healthier beverage

local communities, Bank of America’s longstanding partnership with us has been integral

Committed to removing barriers to postsecondary access for underserved students
by supporting them with mentoring career

they have always responded to our needs with
capital contributions for the South Orlando
and other facilities and for on-call educational

Collaboration has always been one of the keys to
our success here in Central Florida, and through
strategic partnerships with Disney, Lockheed
Martin, Darden, Microsoft and other globally
focused organizations, the Y continuously shares
ideas, insight and inspiration with the other
leading organizations shaping our world.
Based on its innovative design,
it has also earned the Urban
Land Institute’s distinguished
national Award for Excellence in
the areas of planning, publicprivate partnerships, community
enrichment and addressing
social needs.
The only one of its kind in the
nation, the facility combines an
“A-rated” school, YMCA and city
park all in one 25-acre setting.
It was built in 2009 through an
innovative partnership between
the YMCA, Orange County Public
Schools, the City of Orlando and
other major partners.
While the concept may be unique,
the school’s socio-economic
challenges are not. Fully 35% of
students come from low-income
backgrounds, but thanks to
great community collaboration
Northlake ranks in the 90th
percentile for reading scores.
Hailing its success as
‘remarkable,’ U.S. Secretary of
Education Arne Duncan said
Northlake stands as a national
model for other communities
to emulate. “A big piece of its
success is adult collaboration,”
Duncan said. “I know how hard
that is to build. That spirit is as
important, if not more important,
than ideas.”
YMCA’S GLOBAL TEEN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
FOSTERING A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE IN THE NEXT GENERATION
This August the Y will send a group of promising young people to the YMCA’s Global
Teen Leadership Conference in Prague, where they will join 10,000 peers from
around the world to explore new ways they can better serve their local, national and
global communities. And when the World Council of YMCAs holds its international
conference next year in Estes Park, CO, our local Y teen leaders will serve as
ambassadors for this international gathering of Y leaders and policy makers.
