Since the International Olympic Committee announced its plan to drop Wrestling from the OIympic Games after 2020, local, state and international Wrestling organizations as well as wrestlers, coaches, officials worldwide have been campaigning to reverse that decision. Many of our NLWC members, including our Coaches and Resident Athletes in our USA Wrestling-Approved Regional Olympic Training Center are major contributors to those national and international campaigns to keep wrestling in the Olympics. We are grateful for, and enthusiastically support, their efforts. But our Club also wants to put on record its own statement about how damaging the IOC’s proposal would be not only to us but to all the current and future young wrestlers we serve as well as to the current and future elite “Resident Athletes” in our USA-Wrestlingapproved Regional Olympic Training Center. The Olympic ideal aims at uniting the world in peaceful and inspiring competition that celebrates the highest aspirations — and all the mental, moral and physical disciplines — it takes to be among the best athletes in the world. The games held at Olympia in the 8th-century BC brought at least momentary respite from war between Greek city states. Those games continued for 1,200 years until ended in 393 AD by newly converted Christian Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius because the Olympiad had pagan roots. When the Olympics were re-invented and made more broadly international in 1896, wrestling remained among its major attractions. For nearly 3,000 years, it has been known as “the oldest and greatest sport.” After 1896, Olympiads have been boycotted or suspended by war. But we have also seen compelling evidence of their power to help unite the world through friendships growing out of peaceful competition. At the closing ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics in LA, the athletes from sometimes hostile nations broke away from their formal isolated team ranks in the final “Parade of Athletes” and started dancing with each other. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house during this spontaneous demonstration of a yearning for a greater peace. When, in recent weeks, wrestlers from the US, Russia and Iran joined in competition as part of their shared protest against the IOC proposal to abandon wrestling, we witnessed a welcome moment of togetherness in a deeply divided world. We do not want our sport to lose its most visible connection worldwide to the healing ideals which inspired such shows of unity. The Olympics have also become the greatest showcase for sports in the world. Just check out the measurable world-wide TV audiences since the 1950s. The NLWC’s Regional Olympic Training Center reflects a movement created by USA Wrestling to attract young athletes to our sport, and give them opportunities to meet and train with the our nation’s best talents, and 1 to travel to both early developmental competitions as well as USA World and Olympic Team qualifying events. And we are pleased that Wrestling is one of those sports in which weight classes do not tend to narrow toplevel competition to the supersized. Removing Wrestling from the Olympics would have a chilling effect on the appeal of the sport to hundreds of thousands of these young athletes around the world. We do not want “the oldest and greatest sport” in the Olympics to be cut off from the world’s greatest celebration of international diplomacy through sport. Printed by Advanced Color Graphics Coaches Cunningham and Sanderson help Varner prepare for his Olympic matches For more than 30 years, the NLWC has been providing training and competitive opportunities at all levels – from elementary school children to the post-collegiate elite on USA World and Olympic Team “ladders.” All the young athletes who have participated in our School programs since the 1980s have had opportunities to meet, be inspired by, coached by – and even get on the mats with: Japanese Olympians like World and Olympic champions Yugi Takada (who won five titles) and Mitsuro Sato; with Iowa Olympian Lou Banach, with Silver Medalist and former Lion Coach, Sammie Henson (an NCAA Champ from Clemson), with Penn State Olympian, Kerry McCoy, more recently, with Olympic Gold medalist Cael Sanderson; and, most recently, with current Resident Athletes Jake Varner and Jamie Espinal who won Gold (for USA) and Silver (for Puerto Rico) in the London Olympics last summer; and Franklin Gomez who won Silver the year before for Puerto Rico in the World Championships. Many state high-school standouts who have benefitted from NLWC School Programs have moved on to become NCAA medalists in colleges and universities across the nation – and in all divisions -- including schools like Penn State, Cornell, Oklahoma, Edinboro, Iowa, Oklahoma State, and Pittsburgh. Other recent successes by our Resident Athletes include medal placements in World and Olympic Team qualifying tournaments (i.e. the 2 US Open and final Olympic Trials), as well as in the Pan American Games. We are now one of 27 USA-Wrestlingapproved Regional Olympic Training Centers from coast-to-coast. We are far from being the only organization in the US and around the world promoting and helping both youngsters and elite veterans to pursue Olympic dreams. We can only guess at the total numbers. But we do know that our NLWC School -- for over a quarter century – has helped thousands to develop in our sport. They have been taught to have fun, to eat and train healthily, to learn skills from the elite, to sharpen their skills in pursuit of district, regional, state, and national championships. Last year, over 450 scholastic wrestlers participated in at least one of our NLWC School Programs. They came from a substantial number of schools, mostly from the following school districts: Altoona BEA Bellefonte Brockway Cambria Heights Central Cambria Central Columbia Central York Chambersburg Chestnut Ridge Clearfield Curwensville Dubois Halifax Hershey Hollidaysburg Huntingdon Juniata Juniata Valley H.S. Young wrestlers from all over Pennsylvania — and a few beyond — who were competing in the tournament had opportunities to meet 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Jake Varner, Silver Medalist Jamie Espinal, and Olympic teammate Franklin Gomez and have their pictures taken with them. There was also a table set up to allow wrestlers, parents and fans to write letters expressing their hopes for a future that can continue to include Olympic dreams. They all felt strongly about the value of a future that keeps Wrestling an Olympic sport. Have you already added your voice to the world wide chorus supporting the preservation of such wrestler dreams? If you haven’t but would like to, it’s not too late! The final vote by the IOC Executive Board on which one of three sports will get the nod for continuation will come on September 8. The sports initially being considered included wrestling, squash, karate, men’s baseball and women’s softball, roller sports, sport-climbing, wakeboarding, and the martial art Wushu. In the past couple of weeks the IOC has narrowed its choice to Wrestling, Squash, and Men’s Baseball/ Women’s Softball. The IOC has already invited supporting comments for those on the final list of possibilities. But we can still gather names [at nlwc@nittanylionwrestlingclub. com] and forward them to the September “deciders.” US National Team Training Camp Hosted by NLWC, December 2012 National Freestyle Team Head Coach Zeke Jones and Bill Zadick, National Freestyle Development Coach ran a week-long clinic in State College. They were assisted by our Regional Training Center Coaches Cael Sanderson, Casey Cunningham, and Cody Sanderson. The camp attendees included our own Resident Athletes, along with the following World Class and current leading contenders for place on Olympic and World Teams (many of whom are probably well known to you): Obe Blanc, Andrew Hochstrasser, Boris Navachkov, Devin Carter, Colt Sponseller, Nate Carr Jr., Trent Paulson, John Reader, Austin Troutman, Wynn Michalak, Dave Zabriskie, and Ryan Tomei. National Team Coach Jones offered to bring one of his Training Camps to State College because he thought it would be “a great opportunity to be around the top program in the country . . . . I look at Penn State wrestlers as our future.” But its also true that he is taking his Camps to many college towns. USA Wrestling has approved 27 regional sites, 21 of which are in college towns and sometimes share college or university facilities. The NLWC is simply proud to be one of these regional centers promoting American success in international competitions. Coach Jones spreading his Camps around the country greatly broadens his opportunities to bringing the elite in contact with Olympic hopefuls at all levels. Penn State’s Quentin Wright — himself an Olympic hopeful — said; “It’s great to have people like that around that really inspire you and help you look to the future.” Other Recent Successes of NLWC Competitors on National and World Stages Our recent Olympians aren’t the only competitors representing the NLWC in major competitions. We can’t give full coverage to all competitions. But recent highlights for our other Resident athletes most notably include: At 121, Mark McKnight, a Penn State AA who has become our most popular NLWC youth coach working with our youngest School members, competed in the Dave Schultz International Tournament in February. He placed 2nd to Japan’s Mamora Honda. On his way to the final, beat last year’s winner, India’s Kumar. Kumar who is now ranked #1 in the world by FILA. McKnight won Gold at the Pan Am Games in April. He was one of three American champs leading the way to the USA’s PanAm Team title. Also in April, McKnight, placed 4th in the US Open National in Las Vegas. He had a couple of wins on the way to the semi-finals before falling to eventual Champ Obe 4 Mark McKnight Nico Megaludis,121, finished 5th with a 4-2 record. After losing to Champion Obe Blanc, Megaludis rallied back, including wins over Zach Sanders and Ben Kjar to take 5th. Blanc. He dropped a close match for 3rd to Brandon Precin, after beating Precin in the preliminary rounds. At 211, Les Sigman, former USA World Teamer at heavyweight, has dropped to 211 and got back into competition at the US Open. He defeated several top competitors including former National Champ, Dave Zabriskie. Collegians also wrestled under the NLWC banner in Vegas and did remarkably well given their limited freestyle experience against veteran post-grad freestyle elite. David Taylor finished 3-1 with wins over Ryan Morningstar and Nick Marable before dropping a hardfought final to Olympic Champion Jordan Burroughs, 1-3 and 0-1. Non-placers included: Dylan Alton finished the weekend 4-3 at 145. He lost a close 1st-round match to eventual Jordan Oliver, and to veteran Phillip Simpson. He had convincing wins over Kyle Ruschell and Joshua Kindig. Les Sigman Ed Ruth, 185, placed 4th with a 3-2 record. He had wins over Austin Trotman, and Enock Francois, who upset #2 seed, Max Askren in the first round. He lost to 2nd place Clayton Foster, and to Jon Reader in the 3rdplace match. James Vollrath was 1-2 at 163 in the final tournament. Morgan McIntosh competed at 211 and finished 3-2 on the weekend. He had wins over Jacob Marrs and Tucker Lane. He lost to Dustin Kilgore in the first round, and then to Dave Zabriskie in the consolation rounds 2012 Olympians, Jake Varner, Franklin Gomez and Jamie Espinal 5 New NLWC Website to Get Fans and Supporters More Involved With Coaches, Managers, NLWC School Members and Resident Athletes — In Training and On the Road The homepage will offer twitter and video feeds as well as news. From the homepage, visitors can navigate through major sub-pages describing: resident athlete programs, youth and scholastic programs, and listings of program and other event schedules. In- formation will be enlivened by multimedia presentations. Registrations for programs and events can now be done more easily and quickly on line The major purpose of our NLWC’s three-year old Regional Olympic Training Center is to support the training of, and provide travel to major competitions for, our elite Resident Athletes aiming at World and Olympic Gold. The website section on the RA program will include coaches and athlete bios, schedules and results, competition photos and videos, and an on-line blog. We want you to get to know all these people better and keep up with the great things they are doing both on and off the mats. We think you will find the ability to join the Club, renew your memberships, or send donations in support of our missions, a welcome convenience. Each of you play a significant role in making the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club such a proud and successful program. I cannot thank you enough! As many of you are aware, I am the Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club (NLWC). During the past year, I was approached by several supporters of the NLWC who wanted to take a more active role in supporting the NLWC’s Regional Training Center and its development of senior level wrestlers who aspire to be World and Olympic Champions. These supporters were very impressed by the NLWC wrestlers’ success at the National Level and also at the most recent World and Olympic Championships where Jake Varner won a Gold Medal and Jaime Espinal a Silver Medal. While recognizing this success, these supporters also wanted to make sure that these same opportunities would continue to be available for current outstanding collegiate wrestlers who have World and Olympic Goals and wish to continue competing after they graduate from college. To enable this, it is very important that the Resident Athlete Program be adequately funded for this next Olympic Cycle (2013-2016). The goal of the NLWC and these supporters is to keep State College, PA, as the location where the U.S.’s best young talent goes to train and compete! As a result of these inquiries and to supplement our yearly membership donations and golf/wrestling tournament fund-rasisers, NLWC Coach Cael Sanderson, NLWC Co-Director Dave Hart, and I have initiated a special fund-raising drive for those individuals, families, or businesses who wish to make a commitment to help the NLWC raise money for its Resident Athlete Program through the 2016 Olympic Games. We have named this fund-raising drive the “2016 Olympic Gold Fund-Raising Campaign”. This initiative has already received tremendous support, and we have had numerous individuals and businesses make commitments through 2016. Since the campaign is off to a great start, and we’ve heard that there may be others who would be interested in joining, I wanted to inform our membership of this opportunity. If you have any questions or are interested in being a part of this campaign, please call or e-mail us anytime. You may call me at (814) 574-1441 or Dave at 814-574-7799 or e-mail at [email protected]. As it has always been for the NLWC, this is a family affair that takes a group effort to succeed. We greatly appreciate your help in making this fund-raising campaign a success. This year’s event will be played on the Penn State Blue Course. Proceeds from the golf classic help provide training expenses for NLWC resident athletes/coaches. This enables the NLWC to bring top international wrestlers to live and train in Central PA. Participation also provides the opportunity to spend a day with NLWC wrestlers, coaches, friends, and fans of wrestling. The NLWC Golf Classic is a four-person scramble with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Each player must contribute 2 drives (par 3 holes excluded.) You can choose to register your own team or let our committee pair you with other golfers. Since 2002, we have awarded four hole-in-one prizes including new automobiles and other exciting gifts. The NLWC Golf Classic registration fee is $175 per golfer and includes: cart and greens fees, continental breakfast, lunch on the greens, social and dinner buffet immediately following the tournament, shirt, and plenty of great team and door prizes! To register, please complete and return the registration form. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For sponsorship information, please contact Dave Hart at (814) 574-7799 or [email protected] or visit the NLWC website at www.nittanylionwrestling.com.
