CAROLINE SPRINGS Volume 8 Edition 5 September 2016 Phone: 8390 6694 Email:[email protected] PO Box 3582, Caroline Springs VIC 3023 Closing Date for Next Edition Wednesday 21st September 2016 www.monsoonprint.com.au Melton City 2036: a new vision for our community Melton City Council is encouraging anyone who lives, works or studies in our municipality to share their views and aspirations for our City by becoming involved in the Melton City 2036 community vision project. These ideas will then be used to develop a new 20 year community vision, and guide the planning and delivery of programs, infrastructure, and services that will meet community needs well into the future. • February – March 2017: Public comments on draft community vision From now until 18 September, Council will engage with the community at a number of events, conduct a short survey and run an online forum where members of the community can provide responses to four key questions: what they love about the City of Melton; what they don’t like; what their hopes are for the City in 20 years time, and what can be done to make these hopes a reality. City of Melton Mayor, Cr Kathy Majdlik said Council was looking for a broad cross section of our community to provide input into the development of the vision; from business owners to local groups, residents and visitors. Council will offer many opportunities for residents to share their ideas and priorities, both online and at face-to-face events. To join the online forum, visit www.oursay.org/cityofmelton For more information and to complete the survey, visit www.melton.vic.gov.au/meltoncity 2036, email [email protected] u or phone 9747 7200. Page 6 TRAVEL GRANTS TO HELP EMERGING ATHLETES IN KOROROIT PROTECT ROLLER SHUTTERS - The Andrews Labor Government is helping athletes in Kororoit become sporting champions, by assisting with the costs of travel. Member for Kororoit, Marlene Kairouz, today announced the opening of the latest round of the Athlete Pathway Travel Grants Program, which helps athletes compete and participate without the burden of travel costs. Some of Victoria’s most celebrated sports stars come from regional Victoria, where travel to and from competitions or training camps can be difficult. Stars like Peter Siddle and Sharelle McMahon have made it to the top of their game, but it took many hours of long commutes to get there. We know getting to and from state and national competitions can be a challenge for emerging athletes. That’s why we are offering State Sporting Associations grants of up to $6000 for teams or $2000 for individual athletes for travel to compete at national events or training camps. Social success is critical for broader success, and resiliency research shows that children who are popular, likeable and able to resolve conflicts with others are also more likely to succeed at school, and are generally more resilient than children with less developed social skills. Social skills are complex and multi-faceted. They are also closely linked to development. The social skills which serve a five year-old child will clearly not be adequate for negotiating the more complex social world of a twelve year old. Page 16 The building blocks of social competence Basic interaction skills (e.g., smiling, making eye contact, listening), entry/approach skills (how to approach an individual socially or join a group), maintenance skills (e.g., how to share, take turns, follow rules, co-operate etc.), friendship skills (e.g., how to show appropriate affection, involve others in decision making, be inclusive, etc), conflict resolution (how to manage disagreements in a socially acceptable manner), empathy, communication of needs and ideas, sense of humour, assertiveness (how to say no to engaging in dangerous or antisocial behaviour, stand up for oneself, etc.). If you think your child would benefit from social skill development, please contact Western Plains Psychology on 8372 5723. Two major bottlenecks will be removed at Sunshine Avenue and Keilor Park Drive, where traffic merges from four lanes to two at Sunshine Avenue, and then again shortly after at Keilor Park Drive. Once complete, there will be no lane restrictions from the Western Highway to Sunshine Avenue, cutting travel times by 15 minutes. In addition, ramp signalling and overhead Lane Use Management Systems will help to ensure a smoother and more efficient journey for motorists. 9363 7200 1042 Western Highway, Caroline Springs (next to Masters Home Improvement) Page 18 The EJ Whitten Bridge will also have public safety barriers installed to transform the bridge for cyclists and pedestrians - providing a safer and more enjoyable experience for local families and commuters. Work on the upgrade will start within weeks and be completed by late 2018. Gilson College Book Week 2016 at Gilson College Also two students from each year level were awarded gi vouchers for our Book Fair. The prizes were given for being the ones who have borrowed the most books from the College library during the year. Two of our new Foundaon students had borrowed over 50 books between February and August. They visit the library almost every lunchme! ‘Edward the Emu’, almost certainly the ‘real’ Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy and Blinky Bills and Cuddlepots and Snuggle Pies of all shapes and sizes were amongst the large variety of storybook visitors to our College for our annual Book Week Character Costume Parade today! The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s theme for Book Week this year is ‘Australia: Story Naon’. A number of parents, grandparents and friends aended the parade to cheer their children and teachers on as they shared their favourite book character. The Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP was also present as a guest and spoke briefly to all present about the importance indigenous culture and sharing of story from generaon to generaon. Throughout the week teachers and student became bookworms and delved deeply into a variety of literature, including that of indigenous as well as classical and contemporary and faith-based authors. Classes also swapped teachers for an aernoon to enjoy the books other classes had been reading. During the week, Foundaon to Year 3 classes enjoyed a music, mime and drama performance, ‘Wake up and Read’, which focused on promong the magical world of books and the knowledge and enjoyment they contain. While the Book Character Costume parade was our culminang acvity, we also thoroughly enjoyed the way in which the week kicked off on Monday morning during our chapel me. Our College chaplain Pr Sammi related ‘Why Australia is important to me’, helping us to understand that in our mulcultural College we all have a story to tell. She recited very expressively the story of Mulga Bill’s excing bike ride, and we viewed a clip of The Man from Snowy River’s hair raising ride. (Both Australian poems by A Bango Paterson). But most of all we loved how Pr Sammi ed this all together by relang ’story' to who we all are in the context of the Bible narrave. Thank you to all of our teachers, students, parents and the wider community for making 2016 Book Week another resounding, memory making success. We look forward to connuing the fun next year. R U OK? Day Melton City Council is encouraging residents to take part in R U OK? Day on Thursday 8 September. R U OK? is a not-for-profit suicide prevention organisation that works with governments, corporate leaders, universities, teachers, students and community groups to raise awareness of mental illness. Each September, the organisation encourages people across Australia to ask friends, family and colleagues the key question, “are you okay?” in the hope of engaging in conversations that may otherwise be difficult to initiate. Mayor of the City of Melton, Cr Kathy Majdlik said the day was a timely reminder for members of local communities to look after each other. “We know that people experiencing tough times don’t always respond to offers of help, so R U OK? Day is a wonderful initiative that encourages residents to extend that offer of help to others,” the Mayor said. “It’s also a great reminder that staying connected with others is vital to our general health and wellbeing, and that regular, meaningful conversations can protect those we know and love.” In a 12-month period, it is estimated that 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt, with an average of 2,320 people suiciding every year. Around 45 per cent of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, while 20 per cent are affected every year. T o support R U OK? Day, Melton City Council will be holding a special screening of Pixar’s smash hit movie, Inside Out, at the Caroline Springs Library on Thursday 29 September at 1pm. For more information, visit: www.ruok.org.au Primary school friendship groups Chemistry Sets Children choose friends who have similar interests and enjoy similar activities. During primary school close friendships are most often with a child of the same sex. Chemistry Sets is a square dance club which has been operating for 14 year from 50 Station Rd, Deer Park on a weekly basis on a Saturday night commencing at 8pm. This is related to children’s preferences in play. Boys tend to prefer active kinds of play in groups, whereas girls typically prefer gentler games in pairs or threes and use talk more than action. Such preferences may be especially strong around the ages of eight and nine when many children become more aware of social expectations regarding girls’ and boys’ behaviour. These expectations can create difficulties for boys who are interested in gentler kinds of play and for girls who prefer the kind of active play that is usually associated with boys. Friends cooperate and communicate more with each other than with other children. They also have conflicts more often, but usually manage to settle them without upsetting the friendship. Friends influence each other’s behaviour. Over time they may take on similar mannerisms, language and preferences. Although friendships usually have positive effects, friends who have behavioural problems may encourage problem behaviour in one another. As children’s interests and developmental needs change, their friendship patterns may also change. By the middle of primary school it is common for children to form small friendship groups based around similar interests. These groups often establish their own rules about who can join them. Setting rules and learning to negotiate them is important for helping children to develop their understanding of social relationships. Square dancing is a friendly and social way to meet new friends and is very good exercise. It is fun for all ages as well and is danced to a variety of music called by Ralph Weise. The club was aptly named as it is situated next to Orica (formerly ICI). We welcome new dancers if anyone out there is interested in trying this wonderful activity. The cost is $8.00 per person and $20.00 per family, tea and coffee is provided and all we ask is a plate of food to share for supper. Contact: Ralph – 0419 514 147. Page 26 SETTING UP KOROROIT KIDS TO BECOME MATHS MASTERS Families in Kororoit are set to benefit from the roll out of a program to boost the maths skills of young children. Educators at Kings Park kindergarten will participate in a specialist Let’s Count program. The program, developed by The Smith Family, has been proven to improve numeracy in children aged three to five. The evidence-based program will enable educators to better engage children in activities such as counting, measuring, identifying patterns and increasing spatial awareness, helping to develop their skills and creating a positive attitude towards maths before they begin primary school. The program will also include ways to support parents and carers in finding ways to bring maths into their everyday lives, such as through cooking, shopping and other fun, simple activities. The knowledge and skills that children develop in the early years are crucial to their later progress – and this is especially the case for mathematics. In 2015, a longitudinal study commissioned by The Smith Family showed the Let’s Count program dramatically improved children’s maths skills, with children who participated in the program performing better across a range of mathematical tasks than children not involved in the program. The 121 educators across the state are the first cohort to participate in the program. An additional 379 educators in funded kindergartens across almost 30 areas will go on to participate in the next three years. Priority will be given to kindergartens in areas where children and families will benefit most. More than 14,000 pre-schoolers (aged three to five years old) and 5,500 families will benefit from the program. The next round taking expressions of interest in the program opens in Term 4. The program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25,000 tonnes each year and save up to $100 million in the longer term by slashing the energy use of government buildings and infrastructure across the state. Funded through the recently issued Victorian Green Bonds, the Labor Government will reboot the program with a $33 million investment in the next two years. This will include: Installing new lighting technologies and upgrading heating and cooling systems at Gordon TAFE in Geelong, and Peninsula Health facilities, including the Frankston Hospital Replacing all of Victoria’s freeway lighting with efficient and long lasting LED technology Installing solar power and highly-efficient LED lighting in hundreds of Victorian schools and regional healthcare facilities. This not only brings environmental benefits, but it strengthens the State’s finances, saving about $6 million a year over 15 years in addition to avoided capital investment costs. Money saved on energy bills will repay the initial investment in just five years and will continue to save energy for years to come. Following on from the Labor Government’s recently announced TAKE2 Pledge Program, these investments are estimated to result in the abatement of 25,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year. That’s equivalent to 5500 cars or 3600 households. The GGB program further supports the growth of clean energy and technology industries, creating jobs and strengthening Victoria’s position as the centre of excellence for energy efficiency. GRANTS TO HELP KOROROIT GET HEALTHY AND ACTIVE Sporting clubs in Kororoit looking to open more doors for women and girls to play the sports they love are being urged to apply for a VicHealth funding grant. Member for Kororoit, Marlene Kairouz, announced applications for VicHealth’s Active Club Grants program are open to community sports clubs in Kororoit. The VicHealth grants program aims to boost access to grassroots sport so even more people can enjoy the benefits of a healthier and happier lifestyle. In 2016/17, two levels of grants - up to $3000 or up to $10,000 - are available for clubs establishing new activities, competitions and programs that encourage more women and girls to get involved in physical activity, or which are starting up a social or modified sport program. Modified sports are fun and less-structured, increasing opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, skills and fitness levels. The grants will also provide more opportunities for the development of women’s sports teams. The Andrews Labor Government is working hard to grow women’s participation in sport, so female athletes have access to equal opportunities to get involved in sport and excel, both at the grassroots and elite levels. This includes $1 million to begin implementing recommendations from the Independent Inquiry into the Participation of Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation. Victorian sports clubs are the lifeblood of our towns, and they deserve modern, safe facilities. The government promised them and is now getting on with delivering them through the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund. The fund includes $10 million for Female Friendly Facilities to build or upgrade women’s change rooms, meaning female players will never again have to use make-shift areas to prepare for competition and training. Page 29 Zonta Club of Melton Women Helping Women Our goal is to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local level through service and advocacy. Snap Send Solve determines a users council using your phone's GPS location and returns relevant council details, including contact information, street address, and an email address. Snap Send Solve allows citizens anywhere in Australia to easily capture and report on common issues including Litter, Hard waste, Parking, Street Cleaning, Trees, Noise, and also provide a general request or general feedback. Thanks to the high technology in the iPhone, reports submitted by citizens automatically contain exact GPS coordinates of the issues and optionally, a photographic record. Already in use by nearly 30,000 Australians, Snap Send Solve has drawn critical praise from users and currently has a 5 star rating on iTunes. One user commented, ‘I used the app recently when I was walking along my street - I took a photo of a pile of rubbish that had been in front of the local pre-school for over a week and sent it instantly. Within 24 hours the rubbish had been removed.’ The app is being recommended by many councils around Australia. Gideon Kowadlo, a director of Outware Mobile, the Melbourne based developers behind Snap Send Solve said 'the app uses an advanced mapping system to match a location to a council so the citizen doesn't need to know anything about their position to report a problem to the right council. Page 38 Pokemon Go: Play it safe, Play it legal The new Pokemon GO, location based virtual game has taken the world by storm. Pokemon monsters roam the land and your objective is to catch them. • Remember that this game is GPS based and keeps track of your movements, it knows where you are all of the time. The concern here is the possibility of hackers getting this information too. The game forces players out of their homes and into the outdoors. It’s fun and is helping to keep people active but police warn that there are some dangers associated with playing the game that users need to keep in mind. • Watch that excess data usage, it could come back to haunt you. • Above all, have fun but play it safe and play it legal Below are some user tips to be considered. • Let someone know where you’re going and what time you expect to be back. • Lift your eyes from your phone regularly, be aware of your surroundings and watch where you’re going. There have been reports of people walking into oncoming traffic overseas, not to mention the pain that can be inflicted by a tree or pole. • If the game leads you to a place you wouldn’t normally go, then don’t go there now. Locations are often suggested by game users so there is the possibility gamers could be lured into unsafe situations. • Do not enter private property without permission, catching Pokemon monsters is not a defence to trespass. Be sure you have permission to enter your Pokestop. • Don’t use your phone whilst driving, it’s illegal • Don’t ride skateboards and bikes whilst interacting with the app Page 39 Caroline Springs Fire Brigade Page 40 Caroline Springs Police Station Community Update Hello Readers, Welcome to all our new and regular readers of the Caroline Springs Community Update. Last month I was able to provide a response from Senior Sergeant Trevor KING in relation to a series of home invasions that had rocked our community. During the month of August a gathering took place at the Caroline Springs Police Station that was attended by local police, senior officers, a representative from the Police Association, members of parliament and many concerned residents. From this event I can report that there will be more Police on their way to the Melton and Caroline Springs area. We are expected to start seeing these numbers increased and changes by the end of the year. Exact numbers have not been released at this stage but the area has been marked as a priority. This is great news and I am sure a comfort to many. The additional Police patrols that have been seen in the area over the last 6 weeks will continue into the future. The additional patrols have provided quicker response times and made a significant impact on overnight crime. We continue to ask the wider community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or vehicles by calling 000. What we do stress that the community does not take matters into their own hands as the risk of injury or danger to those involved is too great. There is also a risk that actions by members of the public may complicate investigations and cause difficulties when the matters come to court. The taskforce centred around these incidents continues to make some pivotal arrests and in the coming months these cases will start to proceed into the judicial system. Last month also saw the launch of the Melton/Caroline Springs Eyewatch page. This is a Victoria Police Facebook page for the local Melton Police Service Area. We ask everyone to “like” this page. This page contains information about local police issues, community updates and events and good news stories. On these days one way security screws can be fitted to number plates free of charge. If you find you can’t wait for one of these days the security screws are available for purchase at all leading hardware stores. For full details of these days and the dates please keep a look out on our Eyewatch page. A reminder to all readers that if anybody needs to report an incident which requires Police attendance, please dial “000”. Contacting the station directly or sending an e-mail is not appropriate in this case. Phone/e-mail messages should NOT be left for the reporting of crime. Finally the month of September sees many children on school holidays. For lots of parents and caregivers this is a time where we are at a loss for activities to fill in the days. I recommend parents take a look at the City of Melton website and visit the Youth Services page. Some great ideas, suggestions and resources are available. www.melton.vic.gov.au Opening hours for Caroline Springs Police Station are: Monday to Friday 9:00am – 9:00pm and 9.00am – 5.00pm on the weekend. Please be aware that regardless of the station operating hours Caroline Springs do provide a 24hr police response. Should you need to attend a police station please consider any of the 24 hour stations in the area, Melton, Keilor Downs or Sunshine. Before I go I am happy to hear from anyone in the community about a safety or policing issue they have experienced. If there is an issue you would like to discuss with me or explain in future updates please email my office at [email protected]. A further way to keep updated with current events in our community is to visit the Victoria Police Facebook page, www.facebook.com/victoriapolice Remember to take care of each other and don’t forget that community safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thanks for reading. We also continue to see a steady rate of number plate thefts. Vehicles that are parked in private driveways, shopping centres or railway station car parks are all at risk to this crime. In the coming weeks and into October which is Community Safety Month a number of Safe Pl8 days will be held at a variety of locations.
