PERSPECTIVE
T
he new CPABC executive held
its first meeting on Friday, Nov.
18 at Delta Christian School.
We are very thankful for the warm
welcome and hospitality shown to us
during our meeting by both staff and
students. May God continue to bless
Delta Christian as they impact their
community for God’s glory!
The following highlights from the meeting are
offered for your information. More extensive
minutes are kept on file with the CPABC Executive
should you wish further clarification on some issue.
1. SCSBC Review - Mark Nill will sit on a committee and
review the written responses and input from the various
member groups of SCSBC.
2. Executive Roles - Chair: Mark Nill and David O’Dell
Secretary: Jane Roxburgh
Secretarial/Administrative Support: Jean DeVries
3. Items Considered at our November Executive meeting
a) Leadership Certificate: Is this limited to the five
courses offered by TWU? The credentialing
committee does have the authority to accept
alternatives for certification purposes.
b) Membership: Do we need to build a more
systematic approach to membership fees?
Certification processes?
c) Controversial issues: Ongoing discussion of how we
give leadership in our schools around sexual identity
issues continues. An important meeting was held on
December 8, for principals and counselors, and LPG
met that same evening.
d) Spring Conference: Set for May 4-5, 2006 at TWU.
Rob Fitterer will be the speaker for this conference.
e) Christian Schools Canada Conference: To be held in
Ontario, in September 2006.
> Perhaps only 30-50% of CPA principals able to
attend–what happens to those unable to attend?
– What about a day prior to the CTABC
Convention for all principals? Elementary
and Secondary? (having provincial
principals meet one day prior to the
CTABC Convention in October 2006 as an
alternative way of keeping in touch due to
the fact that we will miss our fall retreat).
Keep the spring gathering at Cedar Springs
Retreat Centre, May 2007?
> The executives of the three provincial principals’
organizations meet prior to the CSC conference
next fall–David will ask that question. David will
also lay to rest any concerns about CPABC being
willing to travel to Alberta for joint principals’
retreats.
– We will contact Berkley Glazer about the
possibility of a pre-conference (CSC) meeting
with all of the principals of BC, Alberta, and
Ontario. Common topic: leadership issues,
cultural contexts, etc.
> Early planning of the workshops and activities for
the CSC conference for the fall of 2006.
f) Compensation Report: Henry presented the highlights
of the report, which is now jointly a SCSBC, CPABC,
and CTABC document.
g) Leadership Fridays: Do we need another forum for
connecting leaders and working through issues?
Tension: don’t want to lose what we have, and don’t
want to add more to over-committed lives. It would
be more helpful to study professional development/
university courses with a cohort of people and make
some excellent connections and networks (better
than online course work). Such a model would be a
significant way to profile professional development
and encourage work toward the Leadership
Certificate. Linking it with the Leadership Certificate
would be a helpful way to support our principals and
leaders.
h) SCSBC Strategic Planning: February 11, 2006 session
plotting the next directions for SCSBC. Representatives
of the CPABC are requested to attend this all-day
meeting.

three decades, primarily
in the areas of French
and Humanities. Currently
he is Assistant Principal at Langley Christian High
School where he has also served as Guidance
Counselor. Peter and his wife, Mabel, have five children
and a daughter-in-law, ranging in age from 15 to 26 years.
John Zuidhof was born and raised in Lacombe,
AB. After a stint at Dordt College, he completed his
BEd. at the University of Alberta. He began music
programs at West Edmonton Christian School and
at Bulkley Valley Christian School. During some
years spent at Duncan Christian School he gained more classroom
experience and took courses leading to a Master of Arts in Leadership at
TWU. In 2002 he accepted the principalship at Agassiz Christian School.
John is married to Jacquie VanWoerden. They have six children (scattered
around the world) and one grandchild. John assists Jacquie in running South
Garden B&B where he enjoys taking care of the gardens.
Roy VanEerden has 19 years teaching experience,
with nine years in administration. These have
included one year as Administrative Vice
Principal with Edmonton Christian School and
eight years as Administrative Vice Principal at
Abbotsford Christian School. Roy has taught grades one,
four, five and seven. He is currently working as Community Relations
Coordinator for Abbotsford Christian School in addition to his role as
vice-principal. Roy is married to Jane and they have two adult children
Michael and Jennifer. Cycling, camping, and singing are among Roy’s interests.
Jane Roxburgh is the Principal of Maple Ridge Christian School.
During her thirteen years at MRCS, she has been responsible
for the development of a middle school and subsequently a
secondary school. MRCS is anticipating its fifth graduation in
June 2006 and its 50th anniversary in October 2006. Jane has
three grown children, a busy husband, three wonderful grandsons, and two
standard poodles. Hobbies include walking, piano, guitar, baking, writing and reading,
traveling, doing all kinds of Nana things and long evenings of good conversation.
Mark Nill is serving his second year of his second term on the CPABC Executive. Mark serves the CPABC
by being responsible for acquiring the speakers at the conferences. He has been teaching at Fraser Valley Christian
High School for thirteen years and has been an assistant principal for six years. Mark is married to Kimberley, and
together they have two sons, Yanik (4 ½ ), and Torin (2 ½).
David O’Dell is in his fifth year as principal at Pacific Christian School. He has the great pleasure to serve with an awesome
administrative team and loves his job. This is David’s twentieth year in Christian education and his eleventh as an administrator.
He began his teaching career in sunny Southern Alberta at Taber Christian School and was enticed to move west by John
Messelink and Lee Hollaar. David is married to Cindy (same last name) and they have three children, Megan in grade 12,
Kylee in grade 11 and Craig in grade 5—don’t ask! His hobbies are: hey, he’s in admin, who has time for hobbies? David is
thoroughly enjoying his second year on the CPABC Executive and greatly appreciates it when Henry Contant pays for lunch.
