p.m. on the grounds of The Venue.

Immerse and Emerge
Immerse yourself in Salado April 23-25 and emerge from a special weekend of visual, performance and culinary arts.
Texas limestone carvers will be on hand on the grounds of The
Venue, creating three tabletop pieces that will be auctioned off
during the Live Auction of the Public Arts League of Salado (PALS)
on April 25. The carvers will be there during the day on April 23-25,
giving visitors a chance to watch them work on these pieces.
An evening of fine art and fine dining begins at 6 p.m. on April
24 and will take patrons from Wells Gallery, where they will enjoy
an appetizer followed by two main course entrees that will be served
at Alexander’s Distillery and The Range at the Barton House. A final
dessert course will be served at Prellop Fine Art Gallery. Guests will
be shuttled to each location for this Progressive Dinner. The Progressive Dinner can be purchased as part of the passport for the entire
weekend.
Patrons will then be taken to The Venue for the Blue Lapis Lights
performance slated to begin at 9 p.m. April 24. Blue Lapis Lights
will present a one-of-a-kind 45-minute performance created for Salado and for the Immerse and Emerge weekend at 9 p.m. April 24 on
the creekside grounds of The Venue. The performance is part of the
Weekend Passport. In addition, individual tickets for general admission to this show are $19.95 per person and premium seating on the
deck is $29.95 per person.
The Public Arts League of Salado will host its annual Taste of
Salado at The Venue beginning at 6 p.m. April 25. This evening will
feature the culinary offerings of Salado’s restaurants, cafes and bed
& breakfast inns, as well as displays of local artists. There will also
be Silent and Live Auctions. The Taste of Salado is part of the Weekend Passport. In addition, individual tickets are $29.95 per person.
The Weekend Passport includes all of the events for the weekend:
The Progressive Dinner, the Blue Lapis Light performance and the
PALS Taste of Salado. Passports are $199.95 per person and represent a cumulative value of more than $250.

The Bell County Division of the American Heart Association
Holly Tucker will help “Paint the Ranch Red.”
(AHA) will host the annual “Paint the Ranch Red…A Night under
the Texas Stars” Gala on April 25, 2015 at Tenroc Ranch. The event
will have silent and live auctions, cocktails, dinner and dancing. .
This year’s Texas Chic celebration will feature Holly Tucker, from
NBC’s The Voice.
The proceeds of the event will go toward the American Heart
Association to advance its not-for-profit mission of building healthier
lives, free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. These dollars
fund fund research, advocacy efforts, professional and public
education, community service programs and support services. Over
the past three years, the “Paint the Ranch Red” Gala has generated
over $200,000 in donations to AHA programs.

A Night at the Derby Gala raises funds for Variety Texas’ Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children.
Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children was established in
1984 in memory of Charles Schreiner V, son of Mary Helen and
Charlie Schreiner IV and grandson of Daurice and Jim Bowmer.
Charles Schreiner V (also known as Baby Charlie) was born with
a congenital heart defect, and after a courageous battle for almost
a year, he passed away at the age of eleven months. The Bowmers
started Baby Charlie’s Fishing Camp and they, along with Mary
Helen and Charlie, brought children and their parents from nearby
Scott & White Hospital to fish on the Lampasas River.
The fishing camp grew, and the Bowmer family expanded
and started what is now Variety’s Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for
Children on 120 acres adjacent to the Lampasas River. The retreat
serves over 4,000 children with chronic illnesses and special needs
each year. The children participate in three programs at the retreat:
Summer Camp Program, Weekend Program or Environmental Education Program.

Family Festival June 20
The Salado Chamber of Commerce will host the Furry Family
Festival on June 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in beautiful Pace Park
along Salado Creek.
The Furry Family Festival will host an array of animal themed
vendors, as well as treats for the pups and humans. Admission to
Pace Park is free to all animals, humans cost $1.
Returning again this year will be the Military Dog Demonstration Unit from Ft. Hood.
The Pace Park Pet Parade returns! This time, the Parade will be
a Costume Contest as well. Entry is free for the costume contest.

Robertson Colony Salado College Foundation history is one
of preservation; its future is welcoming a new generation
Robertson Colony Salado College Foundation
Inc. started in 1973 with a gift from Alice Robertson Sneed West Trust continuing the purposes
of a previous project - Malcolm McLean's 20 volume Robertson Papers. Beyond showing "what
land does to people" instead of the usual "what
people do to land," as McLean said, the cousins
wanted to be sure Texas history includes an adequate chapter on Robertson Colony's contributions to the 28th State of the USA.
In 1822, the Texas Association Of Tennessee was formed with Sterling Clack Robertson
emerging as Empresario. Robertson, and son,
Salado's Elijah Sterling Clack - ESC Robertson,
became second in importance among approximately 40 empresarios. Of all the early land
agents responding to Mexico's call to populate the
Tejas territory, Robertson descendants' longevity
has extended their news-worthiness to the present
21st Century with expectation of more information soon.
The Robertson Land Grant, 200 miles long
and 100 miles wide, includes all or part of 30
Texas counties of the State total 254, more than
one-half of which are named for Scots. More
important than landmarks of Robertsons being
there are Statewide evidences of their leadership
of agencies and services beginning as early as the
1820's and continuing almost two centuries later with Salado, Bell County, a fortunate Central
Texas focus of that State - building family experienced from their ancestry with the naming of
James Robertson Father of Nashville in the 16th
US State.
ESC Robertson's 1859 gift of 10 acres of
land called Salado College Hill (and at the same
time 90 acres for Salado town lots surrounding
and supporting the educational enterprise) was
again, in 1973, requiring pioneer vision and labor to clear the reduced 7.94 acres, magnified by
rubble from three arson - suspected fires of the
early 20th Century. The fires had destroyed the
school buildings, but would not destroy original
educational purposes that serve as enlightenment
of travelers and increasing enjoyment for Salado
residents.
From 1860 to 1880, never without guardianship of Trustee - Directors, school use of the
land, prior to fires, was extended in the Office of
Texas Secretary of State to 1930. Trustees of the
1930’s - Edgar Griffith, Sterling Robertson, and
Paine Bush continued until Bush, sole survivor,
in 1973, joined the land (with its goals for a Public Park honoring Pioneer Texans) with the Alice
Robertson Sneed West Trust, the act marking the
beginning of Robertson Colony Salado College
Foundation.
One decade following the 1973 Foundation
formation, the 1979-chartered Salado Historical Society in cooperation with Texas Historical
Commission, cited Salado College Hill with two
coveted, non-binding designations that volunteers
and funding organizations take pride in supporting and that Bell County and Texas are proud
to claim: (1) Texas Archaeological Site with (2)
National Register of Historic Sites listing. The
Foundation’s continuous prideful claim of these
non-binding high honors further assures community partnership, an equal or greater plus for all
concerned with the unique long anticipated Park.
The 1973 Foundation, experiencing Millennium - changing declines that barely allowed dedication of the height of their success, an attractive Northwest comer Park entrance topped with
Sculptor Dahlberg’s bronze likeness of ESC Robertson, in Republic of Texas officer’s uniform,
overlooking Salado and his plantation home.
Having started with low stone fencing, in the last
minutes, a donor provided an eye-catching higher
black iron fence with a striking gate calling attention to the 1859 - gifted site.
Illnesses and deaths of dedicated Foundation
supporters continuing into the first decade of the
21st Century slowed progress to the point that year
2010 became a time of wake-up calls sent and received with over-confidence as the two surviving
Trustees of that time, Ronnie Wells and Doris
Kemp rather easily acquired, for the first time, a
full 15 member Board.
Friends all - of the Salado area - few of the
2011 Board actually knew the land site was there
and only the two expected to lead were Foundation insiders, distinguishing that entity as a separate enterprise from any other of several Salado
groups, in their own way, interested in the Village
history. With some over-lapping and enhancement of each other natural for these friends’ interests, additionally, through the years, both friends
and foes of College Hill plans sought at times especially Foundation low times - to assume leadership under similar names and always with some
of the same people.
Goals of the 2011 reorganized Robertson Colony Salado College Foundation are (1) to carry
forward unfinished 1973 Foundation goals and
(2) simultaneously to make certain the Foundation is fully Incorporated as a 501c3 and has ownership of a deed of trust for the 8 acre Park site.
Among firsts, the 2011 Foundation Board
named the Park land site (7.94 acres, Bush 1973
description) Historic Salado College Park. With
the future in mind, a youth group was created.
Leadership rather than age will characterize the
Historic Salado College Park Eagles guided by
simplicity and practicality in placement of perennial landscaping along nature trails and fences.
Preservation of sections of College Ruins,
having had an early start after Salado Historical
Society, with THC, awarded the site archaeological and historic designations (1984), was declared
safe with the exception of “berms” arranged from
rubble surrounding College Ruins. This mixture
of dirt, rocks, etc. currently stalls progress of
clearance of land for the Park. Money contributed
for clearance by Salado area citizens is frozen at
$1400 while other Foundation committees continue around the Ruins.
From 1859, ESC Robertson being an outstanding Mason in Texas along with those he attracted to his causes, the Masons have been available as volunteers. Several other Texas groups
have devoted time, funds, and encouragement
toward the idea and actual beginnings of what is
expected to be the unique Public Park in Texas.
Significant among area community supporters is
nearby Stagecoach Restaurant and Motel Properties, owners of property purchased from the 1973
Foundation for the drilling of a deep well they
share with Robertson College Hill and their surrounding properties. Represented by Bratton and
Foster in 1992, the cooperative well arrangement
also made possible the dedication of the Robertson Statue before the turn of the century.
Before the Park is completed, those continuing interest in this historic venture expect to be
reading two informative books based on research
used for the first time: Empresario Sterling Clack
Robertson, a biography by Gerald Saxon, Professor, UT Arlington, and Empresario’s Son: Life
and Legacy of ESC Robertson (with emphasis on
Salado) by Michael and Nancy Kelsey and Ginny
Parsons.

Inc. since 1973 have been Byron Skelton, Temple;
Jim Bowmer, Temple; Ken Burns, Houston; Cile
Robertson Ambrose, Nashville/Salado; Doris
Kemp and current president Bill Kinnison.
Contributions to the Robertson Colony Salado College Foundation Inc. support preservation of the site, listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, and improvements to the Historic Salado College Park.

The 27th Anniversary Lincoln and Continental Owners Club meet will be held in
Salado April 17-19, 2015.
More than a quarter of a century ago, the
three Texas Regions of the Lincoln and Continental Owners Club joined for the first time
to put on a car show in Salado.
Don and Micki Ellis, longtime residents
of Salado from The Lone Star Region, Sonny Gray and Ron Stein from the Gulf Coast
Region and Ed Green from the North Texas
Region organized the show.
Doc Ellis made arrangements with the
historic Stagecoach Inn. For the first few
years, the group shared the hotel on the first
weekend in April with the Packard Club, but
they soon grew so large they had to have the
Stagecoach all to themselves.
“We then moved to the second weekend in
April and partnered with the Buick Club and
that tradition continued until 2009,” according to the group’s secretary Dean Forbes.
The Lincoln group then began meeting
on the third weekend of April here in Salado so that it could accommodate holding the
Mid-America meet in Salado for the National LCOC. The regional LCOC clubs have
continued to meet together the third weekend

The welcoming party on Friday, April 17
began in the hospitality suite at Stagecoach
Inn, but now gathers at the City Garage,
owned by Don and Micki Ellis. The City Garage houses the Ellis’ collection of vintage

While there is judging and awards presented, the cars are also on display at the
Stagecoach Inn for the public to view on Saturday, April 18.

ABWA Fashion Show
set for May 14
at The Venue
For the 20th year, the Chisholm Trail Chapter of the American
Business Women’s Association are holding their annual style show
and benefit luncheon.
The event will be held at The Venue in Salado on Thursday, May
14. The usually sold-out event starts at 11 a.m. but doors open at 10
a.m. to allow attendees to view the silent auction and the raffle items
on display.
Spring fashions will be shown from Christy’s of Salado, The
Howling Wolff, Magnolia’s, Susan Marie’s and Spring House.
The five businesses are donating clothing and/or offering gift certificates as well for the silent auction and the three big raffles.
The themes for the raffles are House Beautiful, Patio Dining and
All About Me.
Tickets to attend are $25. Tickets may be purchased from any of

Historic bridges over Salado Creek
For several years after the town was laid out, the citizens of Salado
crossed the shallow creek by stepping from rock to rock, or on logs laid
across the wider places. These logs were chained to the rocks and would
sink down stream during freshets and be replaced when the flood subsided. But when in 1866 a dam was thrown across the stream at the lower
end of the village, the water was backed up over the rocks. Then for a
time “foot-logs” raised on legs standing in the water and chained to the
rocks below were used; but they were narrow, rickety and unsafe, and
pedestrians not infrequently tumbled off into the water. A general demand
arose for a bridge. To meet this problem as well as others, it was decided
to incorporate the village. Application for incorporation was made under
the general law and the county court in January 1867, authorized and
election for town officers. On February 23, Judge O.T. Tyler was elected
mayor and a board of aldermen was chosen. These officials appointed the
other officers, among the Colonel Thos. H. Jones as treasurer. The town
officials first tried to raise funds for a bridge by voluntary donations, but
finding they could not raise enough by this means, on December 3, 1868,
they ordered an issue of bonds...
The bonds were purchased by the citizens of the town. With the proceeds and subscriptions amounting in all to some $2,500, the municipal
authorities proceeded to build a wire cable suspension foot-bridge of
substantial construction of unique design and graceful proportions. Two
large galvanized rope-wire cables, anchored at each end in strongly built
stone abutments, were carried over two double-turreted dressed-stone
piers of towers. From these suspended cables wire cords extended down
to catch and support the ends of sawed cedar cross bars or joists on which
the plank floor was laid. It was one of the first of its kind in the Southwest and was designed, engineered and constructed entirely by home talent-Judge Tyler, Colonel Thos. H. Jones, Judge Wm. H. Garrett, Wm. A.

Davis, John Hendrickson and others. It swung some twenty feet above the
water and although it could be made to sway enough from side to side to
frighten timid souls--especially groups of squealing girls when mischievous boys chose this method of teasing them--it served the people well
for more than thirty years. After the county built a combination wagon
and foot bridge a few yards upstream the suspension bridge gradually fell
into disuse. In 1913 it was finally swept away when a cloud burst in the
upper water-shed of Salado Creek sent down a terrific flood that carried
away the county bridge as well. The latter was promptly rebuilt, only to be
carried away again in the still greater flood of September 9 and 10, 1921.

Packards return to Salado
The 37th Annual Texas Packard Meet will be held April
10-12, 2015 in Salado.
It is the oldest regional Packard meet in the country
and one of the largest.
This meet is sponsored by the Texas Packard
Association, comprised of the four Packard
Clubs in Texas.
It again will be held at the Stagecoach Inn
in historic Salado approximately 50 miles from Austin on
I-35.
Typically there are 40 to 70 cars and well over 100 master
registrations. Being the 37th edition of this great meet will
likely increase the numbers! Last year, there were over 60
Packards on display with collectors coming from 11 states.
Participants enjoy a tour, all Packard swap meet, people’s
choice competition, seminars, and awards dinner. Packard
lovers from all over the country compete for the long distance
award.
Viewing for the public is free on Saturday morning April
11 on the grounds of the Stagecoach Inn.
Packards were once seen as some of the most prestigious
on the market. The founder of the company, James Ward
Packard, was an engineer by trade and began producing automobiles as early as 1899. The first Packards were designed

competition. In 1902, the Ohio Automobile Company was
renamed The Packard Motor Car Company and moved to Detroit. The last Packard came off of the assembly-line in 1958.

Divine Desserts June 13 benefits Children’s Advocacy Center
On June 13 at 7 p.m., the Children’s Advocacy Center of Central
Texas will be hosting Divine Desserts in the Blue Heron Room of
Tenroc Ranch.
Guests will enjoy a Fajita Buffet, followed by a wide array of
scrumptious desserts provided by local bakeries as they compete for
the title of Dessert Wars Champion. There will also be live entertainment by the GTO’s, and a diverse and fun silent and live auction.
Complimentary Beer and Wine provided.
Tickets to Divine Desserts are $150 for a couple or $85 per person.
A Table can be reserved for $650.00.
All the proceeds will benefit agency and ensure child abuse victims
in our community receive the quality services that reduce pain and
promote healing.
The mission of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Central Texas
is provide comprehensive services which protect, promote healing
and enhance the quality of life for abused and neglected children in
Central Texas through Children’s Advocacy Center and Court Appointed Special Advocates programs. In 2012, the agency served 700
children and their families.
When children are abused and traumatized they are thrown into
a legal and social system that, although well intended, is often not
fully equipped to deal with these traumatized children. Children’s
Advocacy Center provides a safe, neutral place for children to come
and tell their experiences to a trained forensic interviewer. This interviewer works with agency personnel through a multidisciplinary
approach to child abuse. Child victims receive child focused services
during investigation and beyond with the assistance of advocacy center staff and team members.
The best bakers will compete in Dessert Wars on June 13.
When children are in a situation that is unsafe, the State has
to remove those children and often place them in foster care. This
experience for these children is confusing, scary and often lonely.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) advocate for children
who have been removed from their homes due to child abuse or neglect. CASA trains community volunteers to serve as advocates for
these hurting children. They are a consistent source of support as the
child moves through the court system.

Memorial Day program at Cemetery

Every Memorial Day, Salado Cemetery Association hosts a ceremony to honor the men and women
buried in Salado Cemetery who have served their
country during wartime and peace time. The Roll
Call of Honor is an important part of the Memorial
Day ceremony that includes the Bell County Sheriff’s Posse color guard, an honor guard, soloists on
trumpet and bagpipe and a missing man flyover. This
year, the service will be 9:30 a.m. May 25 at the Cemetery on Baines Street. Visitors are invited to bring
lawn chairs. Light refreshment are shared afterward.

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has designated Old Salado Grave Yard as a Historic Texas
Cemetery. This section of Salado Cemetery has been
referred to as the “Old Original” part of the cemetery; however, a search of old deed records reveal
that the original name was “Old Salado Grave Yard.”
The designation, reserved for cemeteries that are
at least 50 years old and deemed worthy of preservation for their historic associations, means an “Affidavit of Designation for Cemetery purposes” has been
issued to Salado Cemetery Association, Inc. and has
been recorded in the Bell County Clerk’s office.
“The designation is a tool that will increase public
awareness of these important cultural resources.
Such awareness and education are among the best
ways to guarantee the preservation of a cemetery,”
said Larry Oaks, THC Executive Director.
Cemeteries hold valuable historical information.
They are often the last reminders of early settlements’ historic events, religious beliefs, lifestyles
and genealogy. Teachers are using this resource in
their classes on Texas and local history.
According to Oaks, “Historic cemeteries serve as
directories of early residents and reflect the cultural
influences that helped shape our state’s communities.
