POTENTATE’S MESSAGE
by Joe Randall
The “Circus is Coming” the El Korah Shrine circus will start the third week in June in Idaho Falls.
We will also have performances in Pocatello, Twin
Falls and Boise! One of the highlights is the circus
parade on June 20th in downtown Boise. All Nobles
and Ladies can help increase circus attendance by
giving out free kids tickets. They are available at the
Recorder’s office. This is the most effective way to
advertise the circus so jump in and do your part!!!!!
Our pre-circus ticket sales are ahead of last year so
we are hoping for a good circus turnout. Thank you
Circus Chairman Ron Lester!!
The Shrine Circus Parade will line up in the parking lot east of the El Korah Shrine
Temple. Lineup time will be 9 AM. All floats, cars and walking/dancing participants are
welcome. Contact Director Ron Harris to reserve a space. This is a great opportunity for
the entire Masonic Family to show the community what we are about.
Our next major fund raiser is the Sportsman Raffle. We are selling raffle tickets for
50 quality firearms. The raffle items may be exchanged for other merchandise at the
Sportsman Warehouse. Ric Bobier is chairman of the committee and Garland Risner
and Corey Turner are committee members. This raffle, in the future, is expected to rival
or exceed the circus as El Korah’s major fund raiser. The raffle tickets are being sold for
$20 each or a book of 5 for $100 which includes a bonus raffle ticket. We need all nobles
and their ladies to support this effort by selling tickets. You may get tickets to sell at the
Recorder’s Office or if you would just like to purchase some for yourself they are available
there too.
The Provost Guard Wine Tasting event was well attended. They had music, prizes
and an auction. Our very own PP Gary Adams served as both the Master of Ceremonies
and Auctioneer. What a talented noble!!! While I’m speaking of talent another noble, Jack
Gardner and Friend’s band provided the music. Prominent local wineries provided wine
samples and had bottles of their wine for sale.
The Past Potentates offered up many tasty options for their Mother’s Day Brunch.
This was served with a smile and champagne and enjoyed by many Nobles and Ladies.
The Baron Car Show was a smashing success, they had over 140 cars and raised
over $20,000 for the El Korah Patient Travel. This was up from $12,000 last year! Thanks
to Ken Rufe and his team for putting this together.
The Duck Club sponsored another successful concert in the El Korah Ballroom.
Utilizing our facility for fund raising events is key to our financial health. Thanks to all the
many volunteers that help make this happen.
El Korah Shrine involvement in your community can help improve membership and
in turn help our hospitals. One way to do this is by participating in your local parades. I
encourage you to participate but if you cannot then be on the side line cheering on those
participating. Let people know that Shriners are alive and well in your community.
Summer is here with many Clubs and Unit picnics, parades and football games
(Twin Falls and Baker City). Enjoy these events with your friends and families. See you
there!

CHAPLAIN’S
CORNER
By Stan Barker, Chaplain
Greetings to one and all, and
welcome to summer 2015 in
El Korah Shrine, Boise! We
are thankful for the spring
weather which we all enjoyed
to get into the feeling that
summer is here. We have
a great program of events
which has been developed
for us. To name a few, there is some football,
golf, circus, camping, and just enjoying the summer in the events in and around El Korah.
This is the month in which we should all pause
and give THANKS, to all who served in World
War II, while stationed in Europe to help preserve
our freedom. We ask our Citizens display the
flag of our country on June 14, FLAG DAY.
This year we are noting that this is the 117th year
for El Korah Shrine in Boise, Idaho.
June 21 is the day this year when we should
pause and give THANKS, to our fathers or
THANKS for the memories. June 21, 2015 is
FATHER’S DAY.
A TRIBUTE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED
STATES OF AMERICA
Our Father, we bow our heads at this time in
gratitude for all the blessings we have received
from Thee. We are an honored Nation in a great
company of Nations. Our Flag stands for all that
is noble and true in word and in deed. May we
be stirred with pride as we gaze upon its beautiful
colors of red, white, and blue, and may our love
for our Flag grow with each year of our lives.
May Flag Day to us mean a closer walk with
Thee and each other.

THIRD ANNUAL BARON’S / SHRINER’S CAR SHOW
Nobles and all,
In one word for our Third annual Baron’s / Shriner’s car show
event on Sunday, May 17 is WOW!
We had wonderful weather, a great crowd (about 150 people
based on rough estimates) and we had over 145 cars in the show,
some Barons, Idaho Chariots, Classy Car Clubs and some general public. We also collected over $20,000, final numbers are not
ready yet, for the Children’s Travel Fund which is outstanding.
We sold breakfast, raffle tickets, tee shirts, and auctioned of
several items. We also had the pleasure of Ava, one of our youngest Shriner Children ever, and her family at our car show. There
were many Barons, “Kids pick” awards and the Potentate’s car
show awards given out, the clowns were clowning around and
creating tons of fun for the kids, face painting, the Provost Guard
was there supporting the event and keeping the crowd under control. We also had one potential Shriner from the membership
booth. See the link that Blake Titus put together, thanks Blake
great job - 2015 Barons Car Show Link and the Classy Car Club
would like to thank the volunteers for their support as well.
In closing, I want to thank everyone very much for your support and commitment in making this a great event and more importantly being able to help the Children and as we say “Helping
Kids and Having Fun” was a perfect example of this car show.
Can’t wait for next year’s show.
One historical note. I was looked at the amount of funds we
raised on our first year and we raised $7315.70 and had 94 cars
compared to upwards of $20,000 and 145 cars this year. We have
come a long way in 2 years and I can’t wait for next year.
Fraternally yours,
Ken Rufe

SHRINERS PROVIDE PRIZES FOR
LOCAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Shriners for years have been helping kids with medical problems through
their medical facilities either at burn centers or orthopedic hospitals. To help
fund some of their activities, El Korah Shrine in Boise sponsors a Shrine Circus
that performs through South Eastern and Western Idaho cities in June. Local
Shriners buy tickets to the circus to give out to children in their areas. This year,
local Shriners in Challis found out about a fitness program at Challis Elementary
School as well as the achievement awards program at the end of the School year.
Challis Elementary School held a walking program for the Elementary school
kids to promote good health. Each time they walked through a predetermined
course on the playground they received credit for the distance they walked.
These credits were totaled up and prizes were given out to the winners in each
grade. All the kids participating in the walking program had a chance at winning a
ticket to the Shrine Circus either by walking the most miles or having their name
drawn randomly from out of a hat. The next day at the end of the year achievement awards ceremony the rest of the tickets were given out for good spellers,
good attendance ect. The teacher of the year award from Challis Lodge # 92 AF
& AM Masons of Idaho was also given out. Karen Coonts the District Special
Education teacher was this year’s winner.
The Kindergarten winner had 10 miles plus 12 laps, 1st grade 10 miles, 2nd
grade 10 miles plus 9 laps, 3rd grade 20 miles, 4th grade 30 miles, 5th grade 5
miles plus 10 laps and 6th grade 5 miles plus 7 laps. The K-3 grade overall winner was Ty Farr and the 4-6 overall winner was Wiley Turek who both received
additional prizes. Ty had already left school for the summer so the second place
winners for the 3rd grade each got a shrine circus ticket.
Due to the number of local Shriners the excess tickets (almost 40 total) were
donated to the Elementary School. Two local Shrines were at the awards ceremony for the fitness prizes and one was at the awards program the next day
for the teacher of the year and student awards activities. Another example of
Shriners helping Children.
These are the winners for the most miles walked Kindergarten through
6th grade With Shriners Ken Miller and Doug Hammond in the back row with
the “Genie” hats on. Kids left to right Jaiden Wright, Rylee Bartel, Jessa Hunt,
MaKala Bruno, Cody Lanier, Wiley Turek, Jessica Lafeen, and Grace Kowarko.

PAYETTE PARADE
Parade season is here! El Korah Tin Lizzies
riders Ron Harris, Dick Berry and Joe Kowalczyk
and El Korah Shrine Clowns Dave Thomas and
Rodger Hood gathered May 16th in Payette for
the Apple Blossom parade. Dick Swift drove the
El Korah Van while El Korah Shrine Nobles Rick
Holloway and Mark Isserman walked the parade
route handing out free Shrine Circus kids tickets.
Many more parades coming up. Please take
this opportunity to support your Nobles. This
is great publicity for the Shrine and the Shrine
Hospitals for Children. Don’t miss the El Korah
Shrine Circus parade on June 20. Contact our
Director Ron Harris if your Club or Unit would like
to participate. It is always great fun. Encourage
your friends and family to line the streets of Boise
to cheer on our Nobles.

SHRINE CIRCUS
Ron Lester, Chairman
Many of us have memories of a circus in our earlier years.
My earliest memories are those of being taken to the Circus by my
Shriner Uncle and aunt. They were instrumental in getting their
family to the circus. The Circus is an excellent source of entertainment for kids (and adults). It is an excellent way to share a fun
event with your family
As Shriners we can be proud of our Shrine Circus and enjoy
the fact that It provides our Shrine Temple the financial support
required to allow us to do the things we do best- - - Help Kids and
Families. I am proud to serve as Chairman of the Shrine Circus
and allowed to represent our Nobles of El Korah in the presentation of the Circus.
I hope each of you will support the noblest of our causes by
purchasing your Noble’s Tickets and allowing the use of them by
your neighbors, friends and family.
The purchase of your tickets shows you are taking pride
in producing the Shrine Circus and will see to it that your children and grandchildren will be afforded an opportunity to see the
GREATEST SHOW IN IDAHO.

THE CIRCUS IS COMING!!
THE CIRCUS IS COMING!!
El Korah Shrine Circus will be starting beginning June 15th in Idaho
Falls, with the final performance June 21 in Boise. Mark your
calendars, Nobles! When the circus is in your area, plan to attend,
wear your Fez and show the public what a great organization we
are.
Noble tickets were mailed in the first part of April. Please purchase your tickets and give them to people who would enjoy the
circus. If you are unable to purchase them, please return them
to the Temple and enclose a check for the amount that you can
afford. Wouldn’t it be great to see a smile on a child’s face as the
guy is shot out of the cannon, taking a ride on the elephant, or the
clowns pulling their pranks.
Thanks to all the Nobles who are working hard to sell advertisements for the program. Posters will be available by the middle of
May. Scatter them all over the towns. Once again, we have free
tickets for kids. When you have a parade, have nobles go along
the parade route and hand out tickets. Tents will be available to
be put in a business along with kids free tickets. In the Pocatello
area, McDonalds will be putting kid tickets in happy meals, and the
Idaho Food Bank will be distributing tickets as well. The following
business will have tickets for sale: Ridleys, DL Evans Banks, Albertsons in Idaho Falls, Broulins in Eastern Idaho, and Quick Cash.
With the cooperation and hard work of many Nobles, we can make
this the best Circus ever for El Korah!

UPDATE ON HARLEY
WADE’S HOUSE
We were recently informed that the widow of Harley Wade, a past Shriner
and member of Boise Lodge #2, was having problems with her roof leaking and general maintenance issues on her home. Boise #2 donated
$290 so far for the materials, Clarence Jones donated $100, Dave and
Ann Triplett donated $50, Rick and Jackie Holloway have donated about
$300 so far, and Ken Beaudreau has donated a considerable amount as
well for the repair of Mrs. Wade’s house. Franklin Building Supply donated all the materials to replace her roof, two teams of roofers removed
the old roof and installed the new roof, and Rick has replaced two areas
of damaged sheetrock, finished it and textured it, and installed a new
bathroom light and fan. We still need to paint the interior ceilings, replace the soffit and fascia all around the house, and replace the awning.
This should be done by the end of next week. A full report on the donations and a picture of the finished work will be published in the September
Desert Dust. Thanks to everyone for your donations so far!

SHRINERS HOSPITAL VISIT
June 2015
THE EAGLES CONCERT
The Eagles, one of the most recognized bands of the 1970’s
and forward, held a concert in Boise on May 31. Recognizing the
contributions the Shriners Hospitals give to so many kids, they allowed volunteer Shriners to sell a digitally remastered copy of their
Greatest Hits album 1971-1975 as well as a chance to win a guitar
signed by the Eagles. The profits from the sale of these items was
equally split between Don Henley’s Walden Woods charity and the
Shriners Hospital.
Corey Turner wanted to send out a note for a huge thank you
for all the Nobles and Ladies who helped sell CDs and the chance
to win the signed guitar. We ended up selling about 660 units.
After the concert started, the Nobles and Ladies were given free
tickets to the concert. The area where we were seated were normally $150 per seat!
Lady Ellie Mastropaolo was the one that sold the ticket to
Karen Reaves who was the winner of the Autographed Guitar. The
best part of this is Karen was a volunteer with Treefort and worked
our venue three of the five nights.
By illustrious Sir Mike Mastropaolo
On Wednesday May 6th, Lady Ellie
and I along with Ellie’s sister Bernadette
visited the Sacramento Shriners Hospital
and delivered some of the wooden toys
donated by our friends, The ADA County
Wood Workers Club.
As we entered the facility, there
was a clown (Pinwheel) standing in the
hallway and I asked him if he was getting a time out for something he done.
He chuckled and explained across the
hall is the outpatient check in and he
was there to entertain the children waiting to receive treatment upstairs.
We were greeted by Mr. Joseph Ramos, Special Events Coordinator and
shown a brief video on the facility. Our tour was about an hour and covered many areas of the hospital. One of the most interesting areas was
the casting department. They have a piece of equipment that I have not
seen in other hospitals. It is used to make castings for prosthetic devices
out of Styrofoam in a matter of minutes in an enclosed cabinet driven by
computer. We were told they often use this device to support other hospitals in Salt lake and Portland as well. We met some of the Shriners who
volunteer as drivers waiting in the Shriners Lounge for the kids to be treated so they can be driven home or back to the airport.
As always, a visit to a Shriners Hospital is good for the soul. If you
haven’t visited a hospital and an opportunity presents itself, go and see
for yourself. The rewards are great and you will see the Kiddo’s smiling
faces and will put a smile in your heart.
EL KORAH BAND NEWS
The El Korah Shrine Band performed Wednesday, May 20,
2015 at the Meadows Lake Village Senior Living Complex. The
Band was under the direction of Cal Bowen and performed for
an hour. In addition, a talk was given regarding Freemasonry in
Idaho over the past 150 years, the El Korah Shriners and their
presence in Idaho for 120 years, and the Shriners Hospitals.
The Meadow Lake Village presented a donation of $100 and
another $100 was received from Noble Deek.

PORTLAND SHRINE HOSPITAL SCREENING CLINIC
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland is coordinating with our affiliated Temples for the first ever regional screening clinic day, in conjunction with our board members.
On Saturday, October 24, 2015 FROM 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., we are inviting our affiliated Temples, clubs and/
or units to hold a screening clinic in their home towns (the goal of increasing the number of new children
seeking care at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland ).
On that day (10-24-2015), we will have a staff member in the hospital manning the patient referral phone
number to accept calls from these clinics to “onboard new patients” who are referred from these clinics (to
put the referred child’s information in the computer system and to coordinate with the family a scheduled
date, time for their first appointment at Shriners Hospital)
Why are we doing this? In the past at screening clinics, families were given an application or referral form
to complete, and the Shrine Club coordinating the clinic would mail the forms into the hospital. (Causing a
built in delay for the family) We would then review and approve the application and mail the family a date
and time for a first appointment in an acceptance letter.(most likely a date/time which didn’t fit the families’
schedule which ultimately made our successful show rate at the first clinic appointment a negative situation).
If your club/units are considering hosting a Screening clinic in the fall; please have them consider selecting October 24, 2015 for their date. Our hope is that the families that attend the clinic and who are referred
by the volunteer physician at the clinic can call from the screening clinic directly to Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Portland and be given a first appointment date and time right then.
Please email or call with questions or to receive a pdf on how to set up a screening clinic.
