Villa Jovis - Mount
Tiberio
The most important of
the island's twelve imperial villas, Villa Jovis was
built in the First Century
AD and discovered in
the Eighteenth Century
under the rule of Charles
of Bourbon. Dominating
the promontory that extends from Grotta Bianca Point to Caterola Point, the villa, which covers an area
of 7000 square metres, towers over the valley looking out to Cesina.
The coastal perimeter covers a distance of about 17 km. Mount Tiberio (334 m.) to the east and Mount
Solaro (589 m.) to the west are the island‟s two main massifs, between which we find the small town of
Capri (138 m.) stradding Marina Grande (to the north) and Marina Piccola (to the south). The other
inhabited centre, Anacapri (286 m.), is located in a large verdant plain to the west of Mount Solaro.
Contrary to other islands in the Gulf of Naples, Capri is of sedimentary, and not volcanic origin, having
been formed by calcareous land dating to the Cretaceous period, and to a lesser degree by layers
from the Eocene epoch and tufa carried by the wind from nearby volcanoes. From a geological angle,
it represents the last spurs of the Sorrento peninsula mountain range, which is also of calcareous origin.
The flora, one of the richest in the whole of Italy, gives the island a lush appearance even during the
cold season. Similarly, the island‟s fauna, which includes a large number of marine species, enrich its
deep waters; the land fauna also includes many non-migratory birds, such as the large albatrosses,
and saurians, like the rare blue lizard of the Faraglioni.
The naturally marine climate is temperate, pleasant and salubrious. The average temperature is 13.1°
C in winter, 16.5° C in spring, 22.7° in summer and 13.9° in autumn.

Bergwandelen. You will certainly not miss one of the most beautiful walks in Capri. The route dates
back to the Roman times and was built to link Capodimonte (the only access to Anacapri until the last
century) to the Migliera belvedere where the remains of Imperial-age buildings were found.
We recommend you to leave from Piazza Vittoria by taking the small street (Via Caposcuro, then Via
Migliera) on the left of the chairlift station. The basically level route, winds through an amazing
landscape, among the slopes of Monte Solaro and the orchards and vineyards of the first houses of
the town, and finishes with the
belvedere with a splendid view of
Punta Carena. Going up along a
path on the left, you can reach
another
splendid
belvedere,
overlooking the southern coast of
the island, and the far-off
Faraglioni.
For the less audacious and those
who have enough of walking, there
is a restaurant "Da Gelsomina" a
few metres from the belvedere.
You can then either go on along a
path leading to the Torre della
Guardia and Torre di Materita, go back to Piazza Vittoria along the same route or take one of the small
streets, that go downhill towards Caprile, Via G. Orlandi and the rest of the historic centre to discover
some more spectacular views of the landscape of Anacapri.
