Our research shows that girls love the social
opportunities and ’resting’ spots on BLOQX.
The vision behind BLOQX
We’re creating a NEW climbing experience for tweens and teenagers —
we’re taking climbing further than the normal climbing wall.
We wanted to raise the bar and create a whole new climbing system that doesn’t look like a fake rock or a traditional
climbing wall, something that looks completely different and fresh. And something that really has focus on form and
aesthetics all at the same time. That’s why we agreed on making a play sculpture. And that’s the keyword — it’s
something you climb on and also admire as a sculpture in a public space.
10-15 years tweens and early teenagers
Difficult age group, they don’t play anymore... it’s not cool. Instead, they hang-out and do sports. To this group, everything
that would be found in a ’normal’ playground is percieved by them as childish and very uncool.
They grow older younger today due to our fascination of electronic era. Today, kids at 11 years have mobile phones, live
on the internet, play gameboys, playstation... you name it. And the fascination with electronics leads to inactivity.
As leaders in playground innovation, we love having the challenge of inventing and developing things that appeals to our
hardest-to-please market — tweens and early teenagers. Our research shows that they need to feel as if the product is
made for them so they take ownership over it, and that they can bring their own rules to make it their own.
It’s critical to create the right places for them that appeals to them and does not signal ’playground’! It’s much more than
just the equipment... it’s the whole scene — the landscaping, the choice of colours, green environment, the sculptural
aspect of it...
How to make a NEW, innovative, climbing experience
We wanted to create a funky, urban product that provides an abstract climbing experience that is unique to any other due
to its one-of-a-kind sculptural and geometrical appearance.

Compare BLOQX with other current ’climbing’ products
Here’s how we compare BLOQX with other current
‘climbing’ products (like fake rocks):
Fake rocks are products which attempt to imitate nature and fool the user.
Fake rocks have a dull appearance which does not attract users.
Fake rocks look the same from all sides and don’t allow the user to see or
understand where they have already been.
Fake rocks are typically a singular, non-modular, inflexible, unit.
Fake rocks are heavy, cumbersome, and difficult to ship.
BLOQX is visually attractive that speaks to the user — ‘come and discover me’ —
and fits well into the urban built environment.
Through our research, we’ve discovered that BLOQX encourages (especially
young boys) youth to challenge each other on strength, speed and strategy. It also
encourages them to teach and mentor one another in developing their climbing
skills.
BLOQX is a modular system that can be built in different sizes and shapes.
BLOQX are light weight, packable, and easy to send (flat pack).

And here’s how we compare BLOQX with other current
‘climbing’ products (like traditional climbing walls):
With traditional climbing walls, the target really is to get to the top and then down
again — it’s a one dimensional climbing experience.
BLOQX offers a climbing experience similar to ’bouldering’ — it’s low-to-the-ground
climbing where the climber can jump back down to the ground; and where a rope
and belay aren’t necessary. This way, almost everyone can take part in climbing —
hop-on and hop-off. We’ve designed this product with a ’way out’ — meaning that a
person can have a great climbing experience climbing near the ground... practice to
get better and move up higher — and jump off anytime it suits them.

We developed the product
in cooperation with actual
active climbers... and we
involved the end user.
Not only did we work with actual experienced climbers, we
used several user groups to observe, experience and give
us feedback about BLOQX. We set up an outside test site for
the purpose — and invited different user groups. We had
three different user groups; very active and fit young people; a
climbing club of youth; and an older crowd to see how it would
appeal to them.

The use of colour
As we were founded by a sculptor, colour has always been very important for
KOMPAN. We also understand the importance of colour and what a strong message
it sends to the users — especially when you want to create age appropriate
equipment.
The base colour of BLOQX is grey — chosen essentially for the tweens and early
teenagers. We invited a lot of different age groups into the design department and
got their preference on colour boards and had them choose colours — what you see
are their choices. The 3 colours are:
• Major colour grey – 9 out of the 12 plates are grey • Minor colour orange – 2 of the 12 plates (warm colours)
• Accent colour light-blue – 1 of the 12 plates (cool colours)
Having 3 plate colours allows you to create challenging routes across the product using
colour.

Materials
Making a playground is an investment, it has to look fantastic for many years.
BLOQX HDPE panels — highly resistant material
• High impact resistance: vandal proof panels for
urban settings.
• Low maintenance: durable material in all weather
conditions (-30°C to 60°C). The special surface
texture eases the job of cleaning the panels.
• Supporting leg: is mounted below elevated cubes
to ensure stability and safety of the entire structure.
The legs are made of hot-dip galvanized steel.
• Coloured through: scratches and cuts are less visible.
• Rot and fungal attack proof: ensures long lifetime
of the products under all climates.
• UV Stability: panels are stabilized to reduce colour
fade to a minimum.
• 100% recyclable: all panels can be disposed of
environmentally safely after use. Panels are in
accordance with the EN71-3 Standard.
• No-skid safety plates: are located on plates used
to access elevated cubes. These ekogip® plates
have a rubber surface which ensure safe climbing.
• Flame resistance: HDPE is almost impossible to set
alight due to its high ignition temperature.
• Environmentally friendly: no hazardous materials
or additives are used (e.g. PVC, phthalates, heavy
metal UV stabilizers, poisonous flame retardant
materials etc).
• Climbing grips: they’re a special KOMPAN
customized design. They are based on
professionally designed climbing grips — for
optimal play value. The material base is Polyester.
• Metal corner connectors: are made of polished
stainless steel plates. The countersink A2 steel
screws are secured with locktite.

The single BLOQX can stand alone and create a spectacle
due to its slightly oversized proportions (with three different
panel colours).

The climbing experience on this module with its broad sides
(and therefore more roomy climbing area) is different from the
more concentrated clustered structures. The less experienced
climber can get the satisfaction of having reached the top.
Each side has 4 climbing grips arranged in a varied pattern to
assist the climber. Different climbing events can be arranged
when the climbers focus on using a special coloured grip or a
panel colour.

By combining 2 climbing elements, different climbing angles
appear (where the climber can use grips placed on opposite
sides and find foothold in corners). This can make the climbing
easier for the beginner, but can also open up new challenges
for the advanced climber, who can choose to use only the
most tricky placed grips.

With the 3rd module things get really dramatic. A flying
module is added to the 2 coupled modules, thus offering a
number of totally new and exciting climbing routes.

Not only is the airborne module much higher and more
difficult to access, there are also tricky bouldering routes
around the whole structure that get really tough. Thus a
climbing landscape is offered that can be a training arena,
where enthusiastic training is rewarded with success!
To secure the internal fall height, no climbing grips are
placed on the surface adjacent to the flying BLOQX. Instead
the plate is provided with a non-slippery texture to provide
a safe foothold.

WARRANTY
Warranty Conditions for KOMPAN Play Equipment
Warranty coverage applies only if products have been
properly installed and maintained.
The warranty is not effective if products have not been
installed properly according to the instructions provided by
KOMPAN, or maintained correctly according to the KOMPAN
Maintenance Manual.
1. Classification of material in relation to years of warranty
20 years
Against failure due to production defects or
decomposition of HDPE and HPL panels in all
climates. Panels are UV stabilized to the maximum,
nevertheless some colour fading will occur over
time.
10 years
Against failure due to material or production defects
on all galvanized and other non-painted steel and
metal parts, solid plastic, resin-coated plywood
panels and engineered timber.

2. Warranty coverage of damaged parts
The warranty is limited to KOMPAN products. Such
damaged parts will be replaced by KOMPAN and
will be delivered to the customer’s address free of
charge.
3. Warranty coverage applies only if products have been
properly installed and Maintained
The warranty is not effective if products have not
been installed according to the instructions provided
by KOMPAN, or maintained correctly according to
the KOMPAN Maintenance Manual.
4. No coverage for wear, tear, misuse or vandalism
The warranty does not cover normal wear and
tear, surface corrosion on metal parts, discoloured
surfaces and other cosmetic issues or failures due to
misuse or vandalism.
Limitation of Liability
KOMPAN’s liability for any faulty or defective goods will be
limited to:-
2 years
(a) the replacement of the goods or the supply of equivalent
goods;
(b) the repair of the goods;
(c) the payment of the cost replacing the goods or of
acquiring equivalent goods; or
(d) the payment of the cost of having the goods repaired, at
the sole discretion of KOMPAN.
Against dysfunction errors due to material or
production defects on moveable plastic and metal
parts, and sport nets.
All conditions, warranties or other terms implied by statute
or common law are expressly excluded to the fullest extent
permitted by law.
Against failure due to material or production
defects on springs, painted metal parts, moulded
plastic parts, ball bearing assemblies, climbing net
constructions and ropes, and synthetic grass.
Extreme Foreshore Conditions
Play systems installed in these locations are subject
to constant extreme corrosive atmosphere. This will
undoubtedly cause surface corrosion.
Installations in these situations require extra
maintenance and regular documented evidence of
washing down with clean water is required for the
warranty to be considered.
