Diversity Statement
The Gospels, Catholic doctrine and the United States Constitution state
that we are all created equal. Sacred Heart Schools, faithful to the mission
of the Ursuline Sisters, welcomes and celebrates the uniqueness that
each student and faculty member brings to its campus. SHS is a learning
community dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment of respect,
acceptance, understanding and inclusion that maximizes each person’s
abilities and creates a climate for diversity to flourish.
Diversity includes, but is not limited to, differences in race, ethnicity,
socio-economic status, gender, learning styles and physical abilities of
faculty, students and staff.
SHS values diversity. By encouraging difference in ideas, backgrounds and
experiences, SHS enhances the quality of its learning environment. The
diversity experience prepares students for responsible global citizenship.
Diversity begins with leadership. Strategic and systematic planning and
review are essential to achieving this cornerstone. Support of SHS parents,
students, faculty, staff, alumni and board members is quintessential.

Dear Supporters of Sacred Heart Schools,
Congratulations on another successful school year! Your financial support
has made a real difference to the entire Sacred Heart Schools community.
For all of us who serve on the Board of Trustees, our greatest priority is
maintaining Sacred Heart Schools’ long-standing qualities of excellence
in academics and service to the community. In that spirit, we thank you
for your generosity. This year, we raised over $702,150 in the Annual
Fund across all schools. As a result, we were able to continue making
important investments in providing unparalleled education to the nearly
2,000 students who attend a Sacred Heart school on the Ursuline Campus
each day. This legacy of leadership is a tribute to our Catholic faith and the
education and values our campus is built on.

As we reflect on the 2014-15 school year, it was truly a year of celebration,
progress and commitment.
We celebrate the Class of 2015 on earning more than $25 million in
university scholarships, the highest of any girls’ Catholic high school in our
area. As we blow out the candles on our 90th year at Sacred Heart Model
School, we continue to exemplify the best and most progressive teaching
practices that make us a ‘model’ school. As an International Baccalaureate
World School, we know our students are ready for life in a globalized
world.
We’ve already seen progress after announcing a $7 million investment
in facility improvements across campus. The first round of improvements
were completed this summer with the project to finish at the end of
summer 2016. All SHA students and all SHMS middle school students have
iPads as part of our 1:1 Program, and we also now have wireless access
points across the entire campus.

This year’s Annual Report lists gifts received between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015.
A Message from the President
Dear Parents, Students, Alumni and Friends,
Since 1877 Sacred Heart Schools (SHS) has been providing a
unique educational opportunity for students on the Ursuline
Campus. We strive daily to live the Ursuline Core Values of
Community, Leadership, Reverence and Service. SHS offers this
unique educational opportunity from early childhood to high school
through Sacred Heart Preschool (SHP), Sacred Heart Model School
(SHMS), Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) and Sacred Heart School for
the Arts (SHSA).
“All Are Welcome” was our campus theme for the 2014-15
academic year. During this school year, our community of over
2,000 students, faculty and staff dedicated our efforts to becoming
a more welcoming community that embraces all people. It has
been inspirational to see our core values being lived out in new
and exciting ways. Promising Futures, our strategic plan, continues
to direct our work in the classroom and beyond. The students
demonstrate each day how they are transitioning from Learners to
Leaders.
The Ursuline educational experience here is a unique one and
one of which we are very proud. A community of four schools
collaborating to make the educational experience of every student
valuable and positive is our niche. As our vision implies, we serve
a higher purpose and we could not continue without the support
of our parents, students, alumni and friends. Your gifts of time,
talent and the generosity of your treasure allow us to support
our talented faculty and staff, outstanding academic educational
programs, highly acclaimed athletic opportunities and endless arts
opportunities. I want to personally thank you for your support of
our Sacred Heart Schools.
Saint Angela Merici reminds us, “Give good example- teaching
more by what you do than what you say.”
Sincerely,
Dr. Cynthia R. Crabtree
President, Sacred Heart Schools

A Message from the Principal
Dear SHA Alumnae, Parents, Families and Friends,
Thank you for being such a blessing to Sacred Heart Academy by giving so
generously to make sure that we meet our mission of educating our students
academically, artistically, athletically and spiritually. We guide our young women
to be Valkyries, strong women of great faith, and we work to make sure our
Valkyries are learners and leaders. We could not accomplish this without you.
As I reflect on this school year I am proud of the many accomplishments of our
Valkyries.
• The Class of 2015 earned an ACT composite score of 25, the highest average
among Louisville Catholic high schools (The national average is 21.0)!
• Seventy-five percent of our seniors earned scholarships worth $25 million; a
record for SHA.
• Eight students were recognized by the National Merit Corporation.
• Eight of our seniors were Governor’s Scholars and 2 were Governor’s School
for the Arts participants.
• For the first time, we had appointments to the U.S. Air Force Academy,
U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
• The SHA musical theater students performed in very professional and enthralling
productions of The Wiz and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
• The Bel Canto, A Cappella and Madrigal choirs were invited to perform at the
Choirs of America National Festival adjudication which resulted in a performance
at Carnegie Hall.
• Our golf, swimming and cross country teams were state champions, and 20
students signed to play college athletics.
• Close to 500 of our 842 students participate in our athletic program.
• SHA students give selflessly by contributing over 10,000 hours of community
service to various charitable organizations.
• We remain committed to Catholic, Christian values and students participate in
our retreat program, morning prayer, school liturgies, religion classes and service
projects. Students are daily encouraged to demonstrate our Ursuline Core Values
of Community, Reverence, Service and Leadership.
As you can see, our young women are true Valkyries! Thank you for blessing all of us
with your generosity to SHA; I thank my God every time I think of you.
With warmest regards,
Mary Lee McCoy
Principal

A place to
Grow in
Faith
On April 14, members of the Ursuline Campus community
gathered for a liturgy led by Archbishop Kurtz, dedicating the
newly renovated Immaculate Heart Chapel at Sacred Heart
Academy. Through generous donor support, tedious planning and
much prayer, SHA students have a beautiful place to worship and
grow in faith.
Dr. Cynthia Crabtree, SHS President, explained, “The newly
remodeled chapel which is now known as the Immaculate Heart
Chapel at Sacred Heart Academy has been transformed into
formal sacred space for our girls. Through the spirit of St. Angela
Merici and the support of the Ursuline Sisters, our students will
have more opportunities to live out their Catholic faith in ways
that the former space could not provide. Our SHA faculty, parents
and students have watched the space evolve over this last year
and are excited to have it available for their use.”
With the renovations and additions to the existing space, Mission
Effectiveness and Campus Ministries can accommodate more
liturgical and sacramental observances.

Alumnae Giving by year
In 2014-15, 1,407 alumnae invested $356,102 in Sacred Heart Academy, and for that, we are truly grateful. Gifts to the Annual Fund reflect the
combined strength of all alumnae who are committed to helping their alma mater thrive. The Annual Fund allows our principal to address the
current needs of the school, support dynamic programs and initiatives, and provide scholarship assistance to our gifted students. These unrestricted
contributions are crucial to maintaining and enriching the Sacred Heart Academy experience.

A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Grandparents, Friends and SHMS Alumni,
What a joy it has been to be a part of Sacred Heart Model School as we
celebrated ninety years of excellence in education. Because you have
generously shared your time, talent and treasure, the Model School
continues to positively impact our region.
We continue our commitment to student learning using best practices
that result in enduring understanding. To improve their practice, our
teachers are able to participate in professional development led by the best
educators in the nation. Our students are using current tools to support
authentic learning. We initiated our 1:1 iPad program in the middle grades
this year and added digital resources for all grade levels. In order for the
tools to be used well, SHMS added an iPad coordinator who also serves as
a teacher coach. Our IB Middle Years Programme continues to build a firm
foundation at the Model School as teachers put into practice what they
have learned through their involvement in IB training. Our IB work is led
by an IB coordinator who has a vision for excellence in each classroom and
throughout the school. These are but a sample of the many outstanding
benefits our students enjoy because of your generous giving.
Our Foundress, St. Angela Merici, once said, “Live and behave in such
a way that your children may see in you a model.” Indeed you do
that as you continue to support the great work that is being done within
these walls and beyond as we partner with you to take our students from
“Learners to Leaders.”
With a grateful heart,
Ann Carol Grant
Principal

A Message from the Director
Dear Sacred Heart Preschool Parents,
The 2014-15 was an eventful year. Lisa Houghlin was named as my replacement
for Director of SHP. Austin Nikolich will replace Lisa as Assistant Director. Ms. Tara,
SHSA teacher, began teaching the Sensory Art classes at SHP Salesia Hall. What
an outstanding job she has done! The hallways have been proof of the wonderful
things happening in the classrooms.
We had another successful year in our community service projects due to your
generosity. We made another substantial contribution to Pennies for Patients.
Kosair Children’s hospital received 700 books from our book drive. The Terra-Cycle
program to date has earned much more than previous years. The total points were
21,300. This provided 20 chicks for a needy family through Heifer International,
20 geese for a needy family through Heifer International, gave clean water to 18
people for a year through the charity, Water, and gave a meal to 102 Americans
facing hunger through Feeding America. We also collected used shoes for Water
Steps.
SHP JrK began STEM this year. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics. SHA engineering club came to SHP and worked with the JrK‘s
in the study of building bridges. The preschoolers had a wonderful learning
experience.
As I begin my retirement, I can’t thank you all enough for the support you have
shown me through the years. I am so proud of the teachers I have assembled to
work with the preschoolers. What a talented group of educators! They are devoted,
creative, compassionate and committed. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to
teach your children.
Sincerely,
Vicki Furlow
Director

A Message from the Executive Director
Dear Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart School for the Arts,
At SHSA, the door is open to anyone wishing to extend himself or herself with a
challenging or ambitious project. This year was no exception: 700 students in our four
disciplines presented 20 music recitals, six musical theatrical productions, two major
ballets and a dance showcase, as well as two visual art displays.
In addition to those stellar achievements, individual students and faculty members
have met their own challenges with great success: Ms. Loren Crawford, drama
instructor and department chair, is also a dramaturge. Her work, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde,” an adaptation of the original story, was accepted for publication by Eldridge
Plays and Musicals and will be available for production by the public. This entitles the
original cast members to be listed in the script, along with the location of the first
production - here at SHSA. Bravo to Ms. Loren!
Sam Rickert, a student of Mr. John Little, won the Louisville Youth Orchestra top
audition. Kimberly Hebdon won the audition for principal horn in the Louisville Youth
Orchestra’s 2nd orchestra as the youngest principal of the system to date. Mr. Little,
himself a man of many talents, designed a French horn mouthpiece that is now sold
by Osmun Music in Boston.
The SHA choral department performed as part of the Choirs of America National
event at Carnegie Hall. The groups also performed in an adjudicated event at the
Aaron Copeland School of Music, accompanied by SHSA’s harp instructor, Rozanna
Thompson, and John Little on horn.
Ms. Hannah Lee, a voice student of Dr. Laura Chipe, was chosen from thousands of
students to participate in the high school honors choir at the national convention. This
choir performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in March.
Students from the SHSA dance department have had major successes this year as
well. Jeb McWilliams has been accepted into YPAS; Laura Yoder will attend Governor’s
School for the Arts and Clare Blim has been accepted to dance with the Governor’s
Scholar Program. Lydia Morgen has been invited to dance again in Barcelona, Spain as
their guest.
In the Drama department, Maddie Gaughan has been accepted into the theatre
program at YPAS.
A final acknowledgement to our annual fund donors. For the first time, SHSA arrived
at its monetary goal of $13,000.00! A grateful “Thank You” to the numerous donors
who made this possible.
As we look to the future, SHSA will continue to offer an education in the arts that
stimulates creativity, enjoyment and excellence. Thank you for sharing your talented
children with us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anna Jo Paul
