And
“Publics Around the World Say UN Has Responsibility to Protect
Against Genocide” Published April 4, 2007 Full Report
What The Media Reported:
Summary: This UN release received widespread coverage across the globe thanks to coverage by
international wire services. Overall, this release received 154 press hits. About 30 different media reported
on a previous release focusing solely on the human-rights related findings.
Notable Mentions:
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon authored an article in which he highlighted the study’s
results. Published by key media in over 20 countries, the article formed the basis of a campaign by the
Secretary General to shore up international support for his initiatives and the UN overall.
…Perhaps most encouraging, public support for the U.N. remains strikingly high. A new poll by WorldPublicOpinion.org found large
majorities (74 percent) believe the United Nations should play a stronger role in the world, whether in preventing genocide and defending
nations under attack or aggressively investigating human-rights abuses. Even in the United States, where disillusion with the U.N. has lately
11
run deep, three of four Americans favor a stronger United Nations, and nearly as many expect the nation's foreign policy to be conducted in
partnership with it. For the U.N., all this, too, amounts to a climate change. I wouldn't quite call it a new San Francisco moment—but it might
not be far short, so long as we seize the opportunity…
