Barter Players perform for Elkin students
On Friday, March 18,
the Barter Theatre Players
from the Barter Theatre in
Abingdon Va. performed two
plays for students at Elkin
Elementary School, Elkin
Middle School and Elkin High
School. Arranged as part of
the STEAM initiative in Elkin
City Schools, the performing
arts is a very integral part of
the learning experience for all
students in the school system.
Having a professional theatrical group to visit Elkin helps
students to envision potential
careers and stirs the emotion/
creativity of students in his/
her educational journey.
My Imaginary Pirate was
performed Friday morning
in Dixon Auditorium for students in grades 3-6. Written
by Catherine Bush, the story
revolves around the main character, Jesse McCall. Jesse is
having trouble making friends
at his new school, but in spite
of that, Jesse isn’t lonely—he’s
too busy going on adventures
with his imaginary pirate, the
Terrible One-Eyed Jack. Jesse
and One-Eyed Jack are determined to find the buried treasure, but they discover trouble
along the way when the outlaw pirate, Red Legs Ricky,
steals their treasure map! A
high-seas adventure ensues,
and Jesse soon realizes that
friendship is the greatest
treasure of all. This is a heartwarming story that shows the
power of imagination.
Students at Elkin Middle
and Elkin High School experienced the performance of
A Wrinkle in Time, adapted
by John Glore from Madeline
L’Engle’s novel of the same
name. The story begins on a
dark and stormy night, as the
eccentric Mrs. Whatsit arrives
at the home of Meg Murray, a
tomboy who doesn’t fit in at
her high school. Meg’s scien-
tist father vanished more than
two years ago under mysterious circumstances. With the
aid of Mrs. Whatsit and her
friends, Meg and her gifted
brother, Charles Wallace, are
transported through time and
space on a mission to rescue
their father from frightening
forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. John
Glore’s wildly theatrical adaptation brings this acclaimed
story magically to life.
On Saturday, in Dixon Auditorium, The Barter Theatre
Players provided a Student
Acting Workshop for ECS
students. The Student Acting
Workshop was free for the first
30 students who signed up
with Mrs. Tonya Smith, Choral/Drama Director for Elkin
City Schools. Students in
grades 3 thru 12 were invited
to participate in this unique
experience. This was the first
time ECS has offered a one
hour Student Acting Workshop by The Barter Theatre
Players.
Saturday night, The Barter
Theatre Players performed
Antigone at Dixon Auditorium. The play Antigone was
open to the public and the
cost for advance tickets was
$10 or $15 at the door. Students only paid $5 to attend.
Tickets were available for
purchase at the Yadkin Valley
Chamber of Commerce, Elkin
City Schools Administrative
Office, and at Elkin Elementary, Middle, and High School.
For those who wanted a “dinner and theater experience”
area restaurants (Mazzinni’s
and Speedy Chef) were offering 10% discounts if patrons
showed a theater ticket while
dining out the night of the
play. For more information
about The Barter Theatre
Players contact the Chamber
at 336-526-1111.

constructed bridge over the rippling waters of Grassy Creek,
through beds of wood ferns, and a grove of White Pines which has
un-officially been named “The Enchanted Forest.”
Hikes, and bicyclers are looking forward to many more miles of
trails opening in the near future around the campground.
