Steve Shanley is an assistant professor of music at Coe College (Cedar Rapids, IA),
where he coordinates the music education and jazz studies programs, teaches music
education courses, and directs the jazz band. He is also the music director and conductor
of the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, a professional ensemble that performs 18 concerts
each summer.
Prior to his full-time appointment to Coe, Mr. Shanley spent 11 years teaching middle
and high school music in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Groups under
his direction earned over 40 Division I ratings at concert band, jazz band, marching band,
orchestra, and show choir festivals, and over 75 of his students were selected for the Iowa
All-State Band and Jazz Band. Mr. Shanley directed five high school ensembles in performances at the Iowa
Bandmasters Association conference (jazz band in 2006 and 2009 and concert band in 2003, 2007, and 2010),
and his band was also selected to perform in the prestigious Music For All National Concert Band Festival in
Indianapolis, IN (2008). His jazz bands qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships every year—placing in the
top six each of the last nine years. Students in his Advanced Placement Music Theory classes consistently earned
high scores on the AP exam each year.
Mr. Shanley earned a Bachelor of Music Education (with jazz emphasis) degree from the University of Northern
Iowa, Master of Education in Music Education degree from the University of Minnesota, and a Master of Arts in
Educational Leadership degree from the University of Iowa. He is currently completing a Ph.D. in Educational
Leadership at the University of Iowa. He is licensed in Iowa as a K-12 Music Master Educator, PK-12 Principal,
PK-12 Supervisor of Special Education, and Evaluator.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Shanley frequently plays keyboard for touring Broadway shows, local theatrical
productions, jazz ensembles, symphony orchestras, rock bands, and other ensembles. He is the music director,
arranger, and keyboardist for Funk Stop (11-piece funk band) and the pianist and arranger for the Rod Pierson Big
Band. Mr. Shanley has an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and accompanist, and he
is also in demand as a composer and arranger. Over 1,000 of his works have been performed by marching bands,
jazz bands, concert bands, orchestras, brass bands, and choirs throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe.
Mr. Shanley is an exam reader for College Board Advanced Placement Music Theory, is co-chair of the Iowa Jazz
Championships, and was the founding president of the Jazz Educators of Iowa.
Mr. Shanley’s wife, Valerie, teaches at Franklin Middle School and plays horn in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls
Symphony Orchestra and the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band. They enjoy spending time with their seven-year old
daughter, Vivian, and five-year old son, Evan.
Guest Artists
Pianist, composer and arranger Steve Allee is a veteran of more than 35 years on the
music scene, working principally in jazz, writing and performing for syndicated radio
programs, network television and motion pictures, and as a music educator. All of his
career facets have blended into a distinct musical style that has a very strong visual,
almost cinematic flavor because of his skill in capturing or reinforcing important moods
or visual elements that inspire his projects.
Steve has released six CDs as a leader, the two most recent being his trio recordings,
Dragonfly (June 2008) and Colors (April 2007) on the Owl Studios label that are artful
collaborations with bassist Bill Moring and drummer Tim Horner. Saxophonists Rich
Perry and Rob Dixon appear on select tracks. In his liner notes for Dragonfly, jazz journalist Ken Franckling
noted that “From start to finish, Dragonfly makes it clear that this is a band in which each of the players finds
their interaction to be exhilarating…. this trio is all about making the most of the journey – as the best jazz
should.”
A native son and longtime resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, Steve was fortunate to grow up in the hometown
of many jazz greats, including brothers Wes, Buddy and Monk Montgomery, Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, David Baker, Freddie Hubbard and Melvin Rhyne, among others. His playing style has a touch, sparkling clarity
and improvisational variations reminiscent of the late Bill Evans, as well as a very strong blues influence that
Steve credits to his exposure to Buddy Montgomery and Horace Silver.
Steve began his professional career at age 19 with the Buddy Rich Orchestra before he was drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. Through the years, he has worked with a veritable “Who’s Who” of major
jazz artists across the United States and abroad. Recent performances include the Rufus Reid Trio, The Randy
Brecker Quartet, David “Fathead” Newman, John Clayton and The Rich Perry Quartet. He also leads a big
band that performs regularly in Indianapolis. Steve’s big band CD, Downtown Blues, with bassist John Clayton
and drummer John VonOhlen, was nominated for a Grammy® award. Allee’s first national solo CD, The Magic
Hour, released on Noteworthy Records, landed at No. 14 on the Gavin national radio poll.
His other musical accomplishments included being commissioned to write and conduct a four-movement work
for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Indianapolis Museum of
Art. His score for the film, “New York in the Fifties,” was performed live at Switzerland’s acclaimed Montreux
Jazz Festival. Steve was co-director and arranger for a J.J. Johnson Tribute Concert featuring trombonist Slide
Hampton at the Indy Jazz Fest in 2001.
His writing credits include soundtracks for “New York In The Fifties,” the film inspired by the Dan Wakefield
book of the same title, as well as “Something To Cheer About,” a documentary starring Halle Berry and
Oscar Robertson that focused on the 1954-55 Crispus Attucks Tigers basketball team on which NBA legend
Robertson played in high school in Indianapolis. It was the first all-black high school team ever to win a state
championship – and the team that changed the face of basketball forever.
Steve’s performance and network television writing credits with Los Angeles Post Music© include music for
“Chicago Hope,” “Mad About You,” “Martha Stewart,” “Friends,” “Nash Bridges,” “NYPD Blue,” “Dharma
and Greg,” and “Touched by an Angel.” This busy artist also is the music director for the nationally syndicated,
Indianapolis-based comedy-variety radio show, “The Bob and Tom Show,” with which he has co-produced
more than 50 albums over the past 25 years.
As an educator, Steve has taught or lectured at several college and university music programs over the years,
including the University of Cincinnati, University of Louisville, University of Illinois, Morehead College,
Purdue University, Butler University, University of Indianapolis, Indiana State University, Drury College, and
Florida International University. He now teaches at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops and other
master classes and workshops during the year.
John Kizilarmut holds a BSEd in Instrumental Music Education from Northwest Missouri
State University and a MM in Percussion Performance-Jazz Emphasis from the University of
Texas at Austin. He has recorded with a wide range of artists, from jazz pianist Anthony Belfiglio
to the Grammy Award winning DJ Starscream. John has also worked professionally with several
jazz luminaries, including Branford Marsalis, Ron Westray and Slide Hampton.
In May 2006, John presented a clinic entitled “Jazz Vibraphone for the College Percussionist”
and performed with drummer Greg Bissonette at the East Central University Day of Percussion.
He has also been active in DCI, both as an instructor and arranger for several Drum Corps. John
currently has a teaching studio at Joyful Noise in West Des Moines, IA and is serving as an
adjunct percussion instructor at Northwest Missouri State University.
Al Naylor is the trumpet professor at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He plays with his
own brass quintet, The Cedar Brass, and with the Coe Faculty Brass Quartet. As a soloist, he
performs in both concert and jazz venues. His teachers have included Keith Johnson, Arnold
Jacobs, Thomas Lisenbee, Randy Grabowski, and Roger Wood.
Al has played with many great artists including Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, Dick Oatts, Bobby
Shew, Victor Mendoza, Jerry Niewood, Ernie Watts, Paul McKee, Bill Frisell, Ray Anderson,
Corey Christiansen, Bob Sheppard, Brian Lynch, John Fedchock, Conrad Herwig, Wycliffe
Gordon, and Steve Turre.
Al has also performed with Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Buckinghams, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, and
was a founding member of the popular area group, Orquesta Alto Maiz. He has performed at the Montreux Jazz
Festival twice.
Locally, Al performs with his own small jazz ensembles, Bob Dorr and the Blue Band, the Rod Pierson Big Band, and
the CR Jazz Big Band. Each year, Al records the trumpet audition etudes for both the concert band and jazz all-state
bands, making these available on his website for student reference.
As an educator, Al taught in the Iowa public schools for 28 years. Along with his duties at Coe College, he has a large
private trumpet and jazz studio. Al maintains a busy schedule of guest soloing and working with middle school and
high school bands throughout the state. He is a former president of the Iowa Chapter of International Association of
Jazz Educators.
Al’s compositions and arrangements have been performed by many high school and middle school jazz bands. From
1995 to 2009, he was the orchestrator and arranger for the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and its Discovery Chorus.
Al is co-editor of the recently published Spoon River by Percy Grainger. Grainger’s concert band version of Spoon
River had never been published, but parts for this piece were discovered in the Coe College Library. Spoon River was
recently recorded by the Dallas Wind Symphony and the President’s Own Marine Band.
Al’s recording credits include soloing on the album, Rain or Shine, by blues artist, Joe Price. This album was awarded
the best blues album of the year in 2010 by the prestigious international program, the Independent Music Awards.
He is on three albums with Bob Dorr and the Blue Band, New Year’s Eve Pimento, Happy Blue Year and Blue Moon
Honeymoon. Al is featured on many albums with Orquesta Alto Maiz, many of which can be found on iTunes.
Naylor’s first CD as a leader, Legacy, has recently been released to critical acclaim, and is available at Cedar Rapids
Barnes and Noble, The Blue Strawberry, the Coe Book Store, and the Campbell - Steele Gallery in Marion. In Cedar
Falls, Legacy can be found at The Henry Myrtle Gallery, West Music, Grady Instrument Repair, and Mohair Pear.
Legacy is also available online at CDBaby.com, or by visiting Naylor’s website, alnaylormusic.com.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
Sinfonia was born on October 6, 1898 at the New England Conservatory in Boston, when a group of thirteen
young men met under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills. Mills, bursar of the Conservatory, sought to create
an Order in which men with a shared love of music could develop the virtues of manhood in themselves and
in their fellows.
Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad
Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. Since that time Sinfonia has grown into the largest music fraternity in the
world, with more than 150,000 initiates, and chapters on over 200 college and university campuses across the
nation, including the Beta Kappa chapter which was founded here at Coe College on November 1, 1930.
For over a century, Sinfonians in nearly every field of study and professional endeavor have transformed the
face of music in America. Today, the Brotherhood represents a diverse group of individuals spanning the nation,
who continue the proud tradition of advancing the Fraternity’s Object: “the development of the best and truest
fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America
and a loyalty to the Alma Mater.”
Sinfonia has always been an integral part of the Coe College Jazz Summit, providing stage and logistical
assistance, as well as financial support, for the festival. Jazz Summit grew out of the Horizons Jazz Festival,
which was an official activity of the Beta Kappa Chapter.
