From the Editor
My choice for the cover this month is a long time friend and mentor to this wonderful
game Terry Florence. Terry was elected to the SC PGA Hall of Fame and rightfully
so. No other Pro that I know of in this State has done more to make this game. A true
Southern Gentleman, honorable, humble, dedicated, and totally a Great Man. I have been supported by this man since my beginning days of Golf. As an assistant Pro at the Muni Golf Club in
Charleston SC, he has been an inspiration to me thru his leadership, and dedication to this game.
No words can describe the respect that I and many others have for Terry. It is with great pleasure
that I have the opportunity to honor my friend by placing him on the cover and also extend my
congratulations to his induction into the South Carolina PGA Hall of Fame.
Hit it straight and Long, and May all of your putts fall,
Richard

South Carolina Coastal Seniors Continue
to Support Junior Golf
2008 WSCGA STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP
Since 2002 the South Carolina Coastal
Seniors, based out of Fripp Island, S.C., have been major
supporters of the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation
in more ways than one. Each year the SCCS contributes
$1,500 to the SCJGF Scholarship Fund to help enable a
high school senior from the ‘Low Country’ pursue a
collegiate academic career in his or her home state.
Students are selected through an application process
which is administered by the Center for Scholarship
Administration based out of Taylors, S.C. Through 2008,
funding from the South Carolina Coastal Seniors has
helped seven youth achieve their goals of getting a
college education. Not only does this group of dedicated
seniors contribute financially but they also donate a hefty
amount of used golf clubs, golf balls and golf bags
annually that go directly to the South Carolina Junior Golf
Association’s programs like ‘Clubs 4 Kids’ and Little
Legends. ‘Clubs 4 Kids’ is a grass roots program that
offers free instruction and equipment to any junior golfer
interested in getting started in the game of golf. ‘Little
Legends’ is the next step in advancing through the SCJGA
and is centered around the concept of a fun introduction
to the game of golf that includes instruction, teaches the
etiquette of the game and basic fundamentals all while on
the golf course.
Columbia SC –
Dawn Woodard of
Greer captured her first WSCGA
Stroke Play Championship
winning the 2008 tournament
played at the difficult 5839 yard
Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken with
a three day total of 226. Woodard shot three rounds in the
70’s to finish four shots ahead of Aiken resident Whitney
Simons, whom she shared the lead with going into the
third and final round. Simons stayed in the hunt most of
the final day, but Woodard’s consistency paid off in the
end with a second straight 75 to secure the title. Simons
finished with a 79. Wallace Hamerton from Bluffton
finished third with a 235 and in fourth place was former
champion Lea Venable shooting a three day total of 239.
Aiken, SC -
Linda Miller of Taylors won the State Division by two
shots over Liz Scheuer from N. Augusta. Miller took
control with a first round 82 and held on to win the
division. Susan Dauber from Simpsonville finished third
and Karren Peterson also from Simpsonville was the
fourth place finisher.
Brenda Bauer from Columbia was the overall net winner of
the Riccoboni Trophy with a three day net total of 226.
Recently, the SCJGA was recognized as the #1 Junior Golf
Association in the country by Golf Digest Magazine. This
kind of accomplishment must be shared with folks like
those involved with the South Carolina Coastal Seniors.
Elaine Johnson from Hartsville was the winner of Flight 2
in the Championship Division with Cecelia Barksdale
finishing second. In the State division, the second flight
was won by Russell Holliday from Myrtle
Beach. Sandy McKinney from Greer won the
third flight, and Carrel Westlake from Greenville
was the winner of the fourth flight.
The Women’s South Carolina
Golf Association would like to
thank Palmetto Golf Club,
golf professional Tom Moore,
tournament co-chairmen
Nannie Ward and Gloria
Morris, the Palmetto members and all of the many volunteers for hosting this Championship.

CAROLINAS PGA ANNOUNCES TERRY FLORENCE
AS ITS 39TH INDUCTEE INTO THE CPGA HALL OF
FAME
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Carolinas PGA Section is proud to announce Terry
Florence as its 39th Inductee into the Carolinas PGA [CPGA] Hall of Fame. Since the
CPGA established its Hall of Fame in 1981, only 38 other professionals have been
honored in this way. First nominated by his peers and then chosen
by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, Florence will be recognized for his abilities,
leadership and overall contributions to the Section, The PGA of America and most
importantly, the game of golf.“Terry Florence has been throughout his career the
epitome of what a PGA Member should represent and strive toachieve,” said Carolinas
PGA President Kelly Childs. “As a great player, leader, operator, and mentor, he has
demonstrated what it is to be the gold standard of PGA Professionalism. I could not be happier or more proud to see Terry
take his well deserved place among the greatest of all the Carolinas PGA Professionals in our Hall of Fame.” Elected to
membership in The PGA of America in 1978, Florence has been a consummate professionalthroughout his thirty year career
in the Carolinas, displaying the traits that are so inherent to the game of golf itself – honesty, integrity, and character. He
quickly became an active and integral member of the Carolinas PGA,serving on his first CPGA committee in 1980 and soon
after being elected to the position of Vice President of the South Carolina Chapter in 1981. From 1980 – 1992, he served on
12 other committees both for the Chapter and the Section, served on the CPGA Board of Directors, and was also an
instructor at National PGA workshops and USGA Rules Seminars. From 1980 – 2002 he also served as a Tournament
Committee Director for over 100 charity events which included the United Way, the American Cancer Society, and the
American Heart Association. He has also served on various community organizations throughout the Charleston area.
Even with all the time and effort he has put into various committees, community activities, offices, and education,
Florence’s legacy will perhaps always be defined by his playing ability. His playing career in his early days saw him
become an All-America at Gardner-Webb University in 1971, win the CPGA Assistants Championship in 1975 and win the
South Carolina Open twice in 1976 and 1978. In the past 40 years, Terry has won well over 20 championships, qualified for
the Professional National Championship 16 times and has participated in seven major championships including four PGA
Championships, one U.S. Senior Open and two Senior PGA Championships. The awards Florence has received throughout
his tenure have also continually exemplified exactly how successful he has been when it comes to golf as a business and
as a way of life. He has single-handedly set the precedent in the Carolinas when it comes to golf merchandising having
been recognized as the CPGA Resort Merchandiser of the Year four times (1987, 1988, 1992 and 1995). For his abilities and
accomplishments within the Section and his contributions to the game of golf in the Carolinas, he received the most
prestigious CPGA Special Award when he was honored in 1992 as the Carolinas PGA Golf Professional of the Year. In 2005,
he was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame and this year, the Carolinas PGA Section has the pleasure of
honoring this very deserving and inspiring PGA professional as its 39th Hall of Fame inductee. The first thing Florence will
tell you is that he is not alone when it comes to achieving this honor. Without his peers, his family and his friends, he
would not be where he is today. “I’m not sure I’m deserving of it. It’s very humbling but at the same time I’m very proud in
part because I’m proud of all of my peers and the work that theydo. [Golf] is an incredible profession- it takes a lot of
dedication and hard work. For me, this runs the wholegamut of the emotional curve. I’ve tried to serve, tried to lead, tried to
encourage my assistants to get involved and stay involved
and I just feel very blessed to have been able to make a
career and a living out of the game of GOLF

Below is the explanation of how simple a golf swing can be, and what perfect sense it makes,
it could be your key to playing better more consistent golf immediately, simply. While this
idea may not be for everyone, most of you reading this are not world class athletes like we
see every week on t.v. And we know that about half of these world class athletes “slam the
trunk” on Fridays. Missed cuts = no pay this week !! Tour players fail often, and they practice hours daily, you don’t
have the time for this amount of practice so how often can you expect to excel at such a difficult game? Natural Golf is
an alternative which absolutely works. Read on, conduct some due diligence to see if what is written below makes
sense to you
Why you are inconsistentThe primary factor causing inconsistency for most
golfers is that they setup with their arms and club shaft on different planes but
return through impact with arms and club shaft on the same plane (see pictures
to right). The alignment of arms with club shaft during the swing is a natural
response to the swinging force created by the club head. However, the sequence of body motions necessary to accommodate this alignment when
starting in a different setup is complicated and usually miss timed during the
swing, causing errant golf shots and inconsistent scoring…not to mention bad
backs, hips, shoulders and bruised egos! These pictures to the right are of
professional, world class athletes, they possess the talent level and physical
ability necessary to successfully accomplish the timing required during the
swing when arms and club shaft start where pictured. Look in the mirror...do
you have the physical ability to time a swing like this? There is an easier way
Natural Golf is based on the science of a Single Plane Swing. By starting with your arms and club shaft on the same
plane at setup there are virtually no strenuous body compensations necessary to return through this natural alignment
during the swing. The Natural Golf Single Plane swing simply has fewer moving parts leading to more consistent ball
striking and lower scores. This is a swing you can do, not a swing you see done on TV! Look at the pictures to the
right, the setup position is virtually identical to the impact position. No twisting or turning necessary to accommodate
the natural alignment of the club shaft with the arms because that is where you start! Learn the Natural Golf Fundamentals at the Moe Norman Golf Academy and enjoy the most consistent golf of your life! just go to
www.moenormangolfacademy.org
Fundamental #1 – The Natural Hold; Learn how to hold
the club in a way that virtually guarantees a square

Single Plane Setup ; Learn to setup to the ball where you
will naturally return during the swing at impact – Reduce

Francis Marion Golfer dies in traffic accident
Francis Marion University junior golfer Jonathan Lavin was tragically
killed in a traffic accident, Wednesday evening (Sept. 3) in Florence. Lavin, 21, was a native
of Askim, Sweden. The accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. at the intersection of
National Cemetery Road and Freedom Boulevard, approximately three miles from the FMU
campus.
FLORENCE, SC -
Lavin played in three tournaments for the Patriots last season after appearing in seven
events as a freshman.
He was majoring in marketing, and was named to both the Peach Belt Conference Presidential and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls for the 2007-08 academic year.“We
are deeply saddened by this accident and our prayers go out to Jonathan’s family,” said
Francis Marion athletic director Murray
Hartzler. “Jonathan was a fine example of what a
student-athlete should be, and his loss will be
felt throughout our campus.”
Francis Marion golf coach Mark Gaynor said,
“As an athletic coach, this is a day you never
expect to have to face. This time should be
about going to class and meeting on the course
for practice and preparing for a new season. All
of these young men become family members
and Jonathan was no different. Now we have
lost part of our family and that hurts. Jonathan
will be greatly missed and he will always be a
part of the FMU golf team. We extend our
deepest sympathy to his family.”

Mills takes the Bobby Chapman
Spartanburg, SC-Corbin
Mills started the day two strokes off the lead after
he finished day one with a 68. The Easley, SC native came home with a 67 to
win by two over Robert Register. A back nine of 32 gave him the cushion he
needed for his first major national win. “Solid play and a good short game
got me around on a tough day” said the future Clemson Tiger.
Normally played at the Country Club of Spartanburg, The Carolina Country
Club is host for the 2008 event due to renovations at the home course for the
tournament. Carolina Country Club is host to the BMW Charity Pro-Am for the
Nationwide Tour and has been a wonderful host for the one year hiatus.
The 2008 field represents Canada, Slovenia, and 13 states were invited based
on their 2008 accomplishments. The 84 players have combined for 7 AJGA
victories, 13 state junior championships, qualified for 13 USGA events, 20 other major wins, and has an average handicap of
well below scratch.
The tournament is held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman, Jr. Chapman, a long time member of the Country Club of
Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association & Carolinas Golf
Association. He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities. In his business life, Chapman
was a local and national leader in the textile industry. The tournament also benefits the Spartanburg Foundation and the
South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. To date, over $100,000 has gone to scholarship recipients through both organizations thanks to the many kind supporters of the Bobby Chapman.
For more information, contact Chris Miller with the SCJGA at (803) 732-9311. The Bobby Chapman is one of 13 major
events conducted by the SCJGA. Results, schedules and applications may be accessed via the Internet at www.scjga.org.

Spence Completes Renovation of
Furman University GC
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman University Golf Club, home to the
perennially powerful Furman men’s and women’s golf teams, has
been renovated by architect Kris W. Spence. The renovation
focused on all 18 greens and their surrounds and was completed
Aug. 22. The course is expected to reopen for play in early
October.Spence was intent on adding character and difficulty to
the putting surfaces to challenge the modern collegiate golfer, while also creating openings in front of the greens to
accommodate the everyday player at the public course.Furman University Golf Club was built in two phases in the late
1950s. It was a collaboration of architect R.K. Webel and Walter Cosby, superintendent of the famed Greenbrier in West
Virginia.
“The original designers did an excellent job routing the course over a beautiful piece of rolling topography, but the greens
were repetitive, lacked definition and didn’t offer strategic variety,” Spence said. “We incorporated more of a Donald Ross
look to the green complexes with raised fill pads, and bunkers cut tight to the greens with steep grass faces.”Spence said
the end result is a better all around golf course, one that can be ratcheted up for high-level tournament play.“We have two
very competitive nationally-ranked golf teams,” said head professional Kevin Dehlinger. “The golf course had to be
tournament ready and tournament difficult, yet able to be set up on a day-to-day basis for the average golfer. Kris accomplished that. We have areas to tuck pins for tournament play, but other areas for daily pins that are fair to average
players.”In addition to a complete redesign and reconstruction of the greens, Spence added a dozen fairway bunkers and
new tees on five holes. An updated irrigation system was installed around the greens, which were resurfaced in Champion
Bermuda, the latest hybrid Bermuda grass for greens.Length was added on four holes to bring the total yardage to 6,993
from the purple tees. Other
yardages are now: 6,500 yards
(black tees), 6,009 yards (white)

(lavender).“Modern technology
had rendered the course fairly
easy to play for college players,”
said Dehlinger. “Furman has
alumni like Dottie Pepper, Beth
Daniel, Brad Faxon, Betsy King
and Sheir Turner. That’s the
legacy of our golf teams and
now our teams have a course
that matches the legacy. “Said
Spence.” Its a sharper, more well
defined course with a much more
distinct and unique look. The
greens are very memorable and
certainly not repretive.”

Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship
Roaring Gap NC:
Fog was the toughest competitor in the Carolinas Senior
Amateur Championship. Rounds two and three were cancelled due to the soup
like fog that refused to leave the Roaring Gap Club. After halting the second
round at 11:30 on Wednesday and waiting for adequate visibility until 3 pm, it
was decided to resume play at 9 am on Thursday and make it a 36 hole tournament. The fog on Thursday was even thicker and after two more delays Paul
Simson was declared the winner with an 18 hole score of six under par 65. When
play was stopped during the second round Simson was 2 over through six
holes. Frank Ford of Charleston, SC was three under through seven and had
narrowed Paul’s lead to just two. “I was really looking forward to a battle with
Frank and am disappointed but I’ll take the win,” said Simson. This victory
gives Paul his 19th CGA Championship.
Carolinas Interclub News and Notables:
First round playoff matches have concluded and 16 teams are “movin” on to round 2. Some highlights
and notables below are:
% Willow Springs CC (Wilson, NC), probably considered the overall favorite going into this years
playoffs following a strong runner-up finish in 2007, was upended by Devils Ridge (Fuquay Varina,
NC) 19-17. Devils Ridge will play River Ridge (no relation) of Raleigh, NC in hopes of continuing
their run.
% Out of 16 first round matches, only 2 went to sudden death to determine the winners (Myers
Park and the Links @ Stoney Point). Congratulations to both clubs as they prepare for round 2.

Sometimes the biggest problem is
in your head. You’ve got to believe you can play a shot instead
of wondering where your next

Driving is about seventy-five percent
mental, so I believe in giving the ball
some sweet talk on the tee. “This isn’t

1st N.C. Super Senior Championship
of the Carolinas Golf Association
GREENSBORO CC TO HOST CGA’S
INAUGURAL N.C. SUPER SR.
CHAMPIONSHIP, SEPT. 30-OCT. 1
The inaugural N.C. Super Senior
Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association will be
played Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Greensboro Country Club’s
Donald Ross-designed Irving Park Course. The 36-hole
stroke play event for male golfers ages 65 and over
replaces the Super Senior divisions that were removed
from both the Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship
and the North Carolina Senior Amateur championship.
The field of 98 golfers is headed by Larry Boswell of
Jamestown, NC, who has amassed a most impressive
record in CGA events over the years. Boswell is a fivetime winner of the Carolinas Mid-Amateur, a former South
Carolina Amateur champion, the 1998 Carolinas Senior
Champion, and winner of the 2002 N.C. Senior Four-Ball
title and two Carolinas Senior Four-Ball titles with partner
Ronnie Grove of Raleigh. The tournament will be played
on the 6,014 yard, par-71 Irving Park course that opened
for play in 1909, the same year the Carolinas Golf Association was founded. This will be the 11th time that a CGA
championship has been played at Greensboro Country
Club. For more information about the 1st N.C. Super
Senior Championship at Greensboro CC and other CGA
events, visit the Championship Home Page online at
