It has matured to be one of the best equipped maritime training institutes with national and international standing. MIWB consists of a maritime university, providing programmes for masters and chief engineers and other marine related profession. It is a division of the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden (NHL) University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands. In 2011, in the national ranking list of Higher Education (Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs), the maritime officer training programme of the MIWB, has consolidated its position to hold an overall excellent place for the fourth time in row since 2008 both in quality as well as in number of new enrolments. The Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) remains at the forefront in Maritime Education and Training, offering full-time diploma courses in Marine Engineering, Maritime Business and Nautical Studies as well as a comprehensive range of professional maritime courses since 1957. It has supported Singapore’s move from being a major hub port to becoming an international maritime centre. SMA has been awarded the Seatrade Asia Education and Training Awards 2011 and 2008 (inaugural), and Seatrade Awards High Commendation (London) in Investment in People 2009. It is approved by the NVAO (Netherlands Vlaams Accreditation Organisation), DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and Nautical Institute where relevant. Full details available at Website: www.sma.sp.edu.sg (in partnership with Singapore Maritime Academy) Overview Course Curriculum The Bachelor of Maritime Operations (BMO) & Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) courses aim to provide sound and broad knowledge, understanding, skills and competencies in maritime-related disciplines with specialisations in Technology, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Offshore, and Maritime Transportation Management. Stage A & B 2012 Intake: Stage A at SMA 23 April to 18 August 2012 Stage B at MIWB 10 September to 06 December 2012 Stage C From Jan 2013 Dissertation & Internship) The programme takes about 1½ years to complete. The course is delivered full-time at SMA and MIWB: 1 semester at SMA, 1 semester at MIWB, and approximately 6 months for a dissertation (or thesis) while doing an internship programme. Courses are assessed by evaluation of coursework such as practical reports and assignments, as well as, examinations. Course Options The BMO course comprises of four options and they are: a. Marine Engineering Offshore The BBA course comprises of one specialisation: Maritime Transportation Management Teaching Staff The BMO and BBA degree programmes are conducted jointly by staff of SMA and MIWB. Students may have an opportunity to do their attachments in The Netherlands Applicants applying for the above course must hold one of the following qualifications awarded by Singapore Polytechnic - Singapore Maritime Academy: Diploma in Nautical Studies Diploma in Marine Engineering* Diploma in Maritime Studies (DO)* or (MPP) * Applicants must have at least 3 months of sea service. The award of the BMO will be subjected to the attainment of a minimum CoC 3 Deck Officer or CoC 5 Engineer Officer. Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Applicants applying for the above course must hold one of the following qualifications awarded by Singapore Polytechnic - Singapore Maritime Academy: Diploma in Maritime Transportation Management Diploma in Maritime Business Specialist Diploma in Shipping Operations and Management (SSOM) The final decision and selection of candidates for BMO and BBA will be done by MIWB. All applicants must attend an entrance interview to qualify to join the course. Why should I join this programme? This is the first-ever degree offered in Singapore that allows seafarers to embark and complete a degree while working at sea. It is also a unique opportunity for maritime transportation management diploma graduates to pursue a degree in their chosen field.
