A handbook for adults
Dr. Pat Campbell
Newleaf and Gatehouse Books
Newleaf Books and Gatehouse Media, England
In each book, students narrate experiences and events in
their lives, from being bullied in school to living as a single
parent. The students have skilfully communicated their
thoughts, dreams, experiences, and sense of humour. The
sets are organized according to readability level.
Readability: Grades 3 - 4
Will my reading improve? What will help me learn? How can I
remember what I’ve read? What causes reading difficulties? This
handbook uses easy-to-read text and 22 illustrations to explain how
students can become better readers. Students will also learn about the
factors that contribute to reading difficulties. The handbook concludes
with suggestions for becoming an effective learner and a fluent reader.
You can provide students with a copy of this handbook when they join
the program, or recommend it to them as a valuable resource. (54 pp.)

“We are using this book with all our new students during the
orientation process, and we are finding a warm reception
for it. It covers issues that sometimes get overlooked—adult
literacy students often need to learn HOW to learn. The book
is simple, with great illustrations.”

through reading passages written at an appropriate level. The
workbooks are organized around four themes: health, wildlife,
the environment, and popular culture. Each lesson
presents a non-fiction passage that relates to
one of the four themes and a set of activities.
The workbook activities can be completed
independently, with a tutor, or with a group.

These workbooks promote a strategy-based approach to
spelling. Each workbook provides an introductory lesson that
describes the spelling “tools”, and 20 thematically organized
units on the topics of home, community, work, health, and
writing. In each unit, the student learns how to spell 15 words
by using phonics, syllabication, word families, and a spelling
rule. Dictation and an application activity are provided so the
student can try out the spelling strategies he/she has learned.
Application activities include writing a notice to a landlord,
making a shopping list, filling in a form for a free offer, making
a to-do list, etc. Finally, students are encouraged to write words that they
frequently use in their personal dictionary. Spelling Toolbox 3 is more difficult than
Spelling Toolbox 1 & 2 because the words are multi-syllabic. (176 pp.)

Clock and Calendar Skills:
Teaching time to special students
Science Within Reach
Jean Bunnell
This workbook presents a logical
development of time-telling skills,
but students do not necessarily
have to complete all the material in
order. The worksheets, games, and
activities in this book have been
designed to demystify clocks and
calendars for special students and
to help them improve their timetelling skills. The worksheets provide everyday activities that
allow students to practice their skills. For instance, students
learn how to set an alarm clock, use a timer, decipher a bus
schedule, and read a TV schedule. Blackline masters in this
workbook can be reproduced by a single instructor for use
by his/her class, which means that each instructor needs to
purchase only one copy. The permission to reproduce does
not apply to entire institutions. (137 pp.)

Starspell 2.4
Spelling Fusion
This multimedia spelling program emphasizes four spelling
strategies: phonics, word patterns, word parts, and visualmotor memorization. Every word in the program is
incorporated into a spoken sentence to establish context.
The program is progressive, providing nine levels of spelling
instruction and practice exercises. Instructors can customize
instruction to meet the needs of individual students by
adding word lists and changing fonts, font size, and colours.
Starspell 2.4 comes with a user guide and a spelling guide,
which provide clear and concise explanations.
Students learn vocabulary and spelling through seeing and
hearing words in context. The target words are grouped into
contemporary, relevant topics such as home, environment,
places, and food. Students have the opportunity to work
through interactive exercises, games, and tests at their
own pace. Instant feedback gives learners the positive
reinforcement they need. The program provides both
beginner and intermediate instruction for ESL/literacy
students.

Writing Out Loud
More Writing Out Loud
Participatory Practices in Adult Education
This best seller is a collection of fun exercises and inspiring
ideas to encourage even the most reluctant writer to put
words on paper. Adult basic education and ESL educators
will appreciate this user-friendly manual that provides
detailed steps for each writing activity, samples of student
writing, and ways to adapt the activity for students at
different literacy levels. (154 pp.)
This manual is a must-have for your resource collection. The
opening chapters discuss the importance of using strategies
that create a safe environment to help reluctant writers
overcome their fears and take a risk. The remaining chapters
contain dozens of writing exercises and ideas collected
from adult literacy educators. The final chapter stresses
the importance of celebrating students’ writing through
publishing and public readings. (178 pp.)
Although there has been a great deal of rhetoric about learner
empowerment in educational and community development circles,
this book is the first to offer detailed examples of successful
participatory practices in adult education spanning a wide range
of program settings, such as literacy and ESL programs, and
correctional and workplace programs. The editors join with
practitioner colleagues in the United States and Canada to document
successes; to exchange ideas about active projects, past and present,
that have had a participatory component; to share experience, new
knowledge, lessons learned, and reflections. Some chapters give
detailed descriptions of the triumphs and challenges in individual
projects, while others centre more on theoretical analysis and years
of experience. All, however, are rooted in particular experiences and
give examples from action. Participatory Practices in Adult Education
is a vital resource for both new and experienced practitioners who
want to learn from the practical experiences of their counterparts,
and is highly appropriate as a text for courses in adult education and
community development. (304 pp.)

More Writing Out Loud is a
remarkable combination of the
practical and the mystical. It
guides us expertly through the
techniques that prompt new
writers to write, and at the
same time it encourages us to
let go when the magic sets in
—as it always does.
We’ve used Writing out Loud in
our workshops for five years,
and have watched with pride
and admiration as new writers
discover that they have something
to say, and that they can say it in
fresh and artful ways.

Dragonslippers:
This is what an abusive relationship looks like
Rosaline Penfold
When Rosaline Penfold met Brian, she was swept off
her feet, but the love story soon became a nightmare. As
words failed her, she drew the horrors she experienced
and witnessed as they happened. This compelling graphic
memoir sheds insight into the question “Why do women
stay in abusive relationships?” This book is recommended for
educators who want to understand the nature, cycle, and
process of domestic abuse. Dragonslippers presents the many
warning signs of abuse and
offers a frank examination
of the psychology of
both abusers and victims.
The book contains some
profanity and nudity.

Measures of Success:
Integrating CLB Assessment
into your ESL Classroom
Assessment and accountability in adult basic education
Edited by Dr. Pat Campbell
New
Tara Holmes
In Measures of Success, 13 respected practitioners and
researchers from Canada, the US, Australia, and the
UK explore the theory and practice of assessment and
accountability. Building on the premise that literacy is
complex and multi-faceted, the authors define the dominant
types of assessment tools and then shift to the broader
questions of assessment for whom and for what. (374 pp.)
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are Canada’s national
standard for describing, measuring, and recognizing the second
language proficiency of adult immigrants and propective immigrants.
This package provides CLB support materials that will help teachers
integrate formative assessment, a process that provides feedback to
learners and teachers, resulting in significant learning gains, into
their classroom practice. (137 pp.)
The accompanying DVDs are an ideal training tool for
workshops and in-services. The diagnostic assessment DVD
demonstrates how to administer and interpret a diagnostic
assessment (Running time: 25 minutes). The performance
assessment DVD features an interview, portfolios, building a
rubric, and demonstrations (Running time: 27:30 minutes).

English for Everyday Activities:
English No Problem!
A picture process dictionary
Language for home, school, work, and
community
This bestselling program teaches vocabulary for more than 60 daily activities.
English as a Second Language students will learn the vocabulary for fixing breakfast,
riding a bus, using an ATM, changing a flat tire, mailing a letter, and more. A fullcolour dictionary serves as the foundation of the program. The key vocabulary is
a combination of the nouns and verbs that pertain to each of the
daily activities. The low beginning edition focuses on present
tense, while the high beginning-intermediate edition focuses on
simple present, past, and future tense. The workbook activities
provide English language learners with practice to reinforce the
new vocabulary. The audiotapes are ideal for students who want to
work independently; students can listen to the dialogue for each
set of pictures in the dictionary.
This new series focuses on building language, developing
critical thinking skills, and enhancing cultural awareness and
life skills. The units are organized around themes that are
relevant to adults, such as participating in your new country
and community, protecting your legal rights, consumer
awareness, and making connections. Each unit opens with
an issue or problem for students to explore, followed
by cohesive lessons that provide reading, writing, and
communication activities; and a contextualized, inductive
approach to grammar. Each unit includes a project that
encourages students to apply their language and problemsolving skills to the issue at hand.
CDs are available for each level.

This best-selling video and
accompanying workbook for
high beginning-through-intermediate adult ESL students
focuses on the González family. This is a well-acted,
dramatic story of five family members and their typical
experiences in looking for a job, furthering their education,
and meeting the daily demands of working parents
with three children. The workbook uses the video as a
springboard for developing language, communication skills,
and critical thinking. These skills are embedded within the
following themes: looking for work, helping children at
school, and exploring educational options.
Components:
• Video (15 minutes) • Guide (26 pp.) • Workbook (89 pp.)
The Books for Children and Families collection is an excellent focal
point for front-line literacy workers as they support parents
who are cultivating literacy with their young children. The
seven titles in this collection support the emergent literacy
development of preschool children through text and pictures.
Each book contains repeated, rhythmic language and familiar
scenes. These features produce confident emergent readers, and
enable parents, who may be beginning readers themselves, to
successfully share the books with their children. (24 pp.)
The collection includes:
• Wiggles, Squiggles, Lines and Jiggles
• Baby and Mommy Go Walking
• Seth Writes A Story
• I Am Starting School Today

My Kokum Called Today
Making It Work:
Readability: Grade 3
The Hanen Centre
A young girl reminisces
about past experiences
with her kokum
(grandmother). This is
a story about loving,
caring, and devotion
between generations
of women. Every page
features soft pastel
illustrations by Gloria
Miller. (44 pp.)
This easy-to-read guide is
designed for parents of all
young children, especially
those who are at risk for
developing a language
delay. The simple language,
colourful illustrations, and
humourous cartoons help
parents learn to connect
with their children in ways
that foster the child’s selfesteem and learning. (90 pp.)
Iris Loewen
A workbook on conflict and communication
for adult literacy learners
Anne Moore
Making itWork is based on the premise that good
communication skills are key to managing and avoiding
conflict in our lives. The six chapters focus on the topics
of communication, anger, assertiveness, understanding
differences, rights at work, and working through conflict.
The exercises include active listening, body language,
and using “I” statements. Although the book is written
at an intermediate level, it can be used with basic level
learners who are working with a tutor. The accompanying
CD-ROM contains forms that can be completed on a
computer. (186 pp.)

Employment and Workplace Literacy
Employment and Workplace Literacy
Problem-Posing
at Work:
English for action
Revised Edition
Elsa Auerbach and Nina Wallerstein
The student book contains 30 lessons
that focus on workplace themes
and issues related to the working
lives of immigrants and refugees.
Inspired by the problem-posing
approach of Paulo Freire, this book
invites learners to share and analyze
their experiences to acquire the
language, skills, and information necessary for
greater power over their circumstances, and
to strategize together for changes. Originally
published in 1987 as ESL for Action, this revised
edition is updated to incorporate a focus on
the effects of globalization on workers’ lives
and to expand its scope to include information
about Canada as well as the US. It includes
authentic photos and stories of workers active
in their workplaces and communities. The text
is intended for intermediate-to-advanced ESL
students in workplace, pre-vocational, vocational,
community-based, and union and labour
education programs. (335 pp.)
Problem-Posing at Work:
Popular educator’s guide
A picture process dictionary
Nina Wallerstein and Elsa Auerbach
This book explores Freirian approaches
to adult education. This educator’s guide
presents the underlying rationale for the
“problem-posing” teaching approach,
strategies and tools for classrooms and
community settings, a case study of a
problem-posing cycle by workplace
educator Jenny Utech, an analysis of the
role of social change pedagogy within
globalization struggles, and an extensive
resource list. While the book draws on prior work of the authors
(including Wallerstein’s Language and Culture in Conflict and Auerbach’s
Making Meaning, Making Change), it extends these texts to build on the
accumulated knowledge and experience of educators who have been
inspired by Freire’s work over the past several decades. (112 pp.)
