Dr. Cynthia Allan, Department of Communication
Our planet. .. our lives ... our FUTURE??
Welcome to the 2011-2012 season of the Pittsburg State Theatre! As our
opening tag line suggests, this is a season of questions. Who are we and
what is our relationship to the world around us? These are the questions
that form the essence of theatre - humans seeking answers through
stories. Our production line-up includes a strong mix of classic and
contemporary fare that should please the palate of both our dedicated
patrons and new friends. We are also very excited about the completed
design of the new Fine and Performing Arts Center and are hopeful that
the construction of this facility, so long in the planning, will take our
program to even greater heights while providing a wonderful and
comfortable venue for our audiences.
The 2011112 season begins in late October with Gil Cooper's production
ofGiraudoux's
The Madwoman of Chaillot, a classic (and perceptive)
comic tale of corporate greed that seems as fresh and "spot on" today as
when it premiered in 1948. Then, in December, we continue our tradition
of Theatre Unplugged with the student-directed one-act plays produced
in the Studio Theatre on Joplin Street. In the spring of2012, the Studio
Theatre hosts two contemporary plays. In March, yours truly presents an
absurdist "eco-fable" by Jon Klein, Betty the Yeti, which questions our
relationship to the natural world around us and suggests, in wildly comic
terms, the unintended affect humans have upon the environment. Closing
the season is Dead Man Walking, a live stage production of the
-winning film. This production, directed by Kristy Magee, caps off a
semester of campus events that ask us to examine our role in society
regarding compassion, justice, freedom, and forgiveness. Of special note
will be the visit of Sister Helen Prejean in late March to provide a guest
lecture on the topic of capital punishment.
I am sure the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of
Communication and PSU Theatre join me in expressing our gratitude for
your support and our sincere hopes that you enjoy the 2011112 season.

GIL COOPER (Director). Prior to coming to PSU, Cooper served
as Director of Speech and Theatre at Moberly Area Community
College. In 1992 he joined the PSU Communication faculty and in
2001 directed his first PSU production, Never the Sinner. Gil enjoys
directing plays that deal with issues of alienation and the need for
connecting with others. Shows of note that he has directed include
How I Learned to Drive, Marisol, and A Midsummer Night's
Dream. The Madwoman ofChaillot marks his eleventh directorial
effort here at Pittsburg State University.
DOUG BENNETT (Set Designer/Technical Director) is a 30-year
veteran in the art of theatre and has been a theatre instructor for 25
of those years. He is also an actor and director, as well as a designer
and technical director. He holds three degrees in theatre. Aside
from his career in theatre, Bennett is also a professional storyteller.
LISA QUINTEROS (Costume Designer) has worked at PSU
2000. She has a B.A. in History and has found it melds nicely
her love of theatre. Quinteros states that her job gives her the
chance to "make the past come alive, build mythical creatures,
create a future time and place .. .the list goes on. Theatre is
limitless." She also states that the chance to share her visual
perspective, and the director's visions as well, is a challenging,
exasperating, collaborative, hectic and rewarding experience.

The Madwoman ofChaillot was written only a few years
before playwright Jean Giraudoux's death in 1944. He wrote it
during the Nazi occupation of France and having watched the
rape and plunder of Europe by two World Wars, he knew well
that the lust for money and control is destructive to the quality
of our lives.
The Madwoman of Chaillot is a satire with eccentric characters
and an outlandish plot but beneath the play's smooth exterior
lays a fierce commentary on greed, materialism and the quest
for power. While this play was written over seventy years ago
it is a prophecy for today -look at our culture's infatuation
with material goods, our worshipping of those with lots of
money and our disgust with those who don't have it. There
seems to be an attitude now that as long as "I get mine" then it
doesn't matter what or who else suffers. However, Countess
Aurelia, the Madwoman of Chaillot, tells us that we should not
only celebrate the wonders of life but stand up and fight for
them as well!
1 know that this play has been a celebration for me as working
with such dedicated and enthusiastic people has been a joy.
1 hope that you find joy and wonder in your life too.

information.
KRISTY MAGEE (Countess Aurelia) is currently working
. on her MA in Communication at PSU. Past PSU shows
include Brass Tacks, "Helen" in The Water's Edge, and
"Susan" in Woman In Mind. Kristy is thrilled to be a part of
this production. She looks forward to directing Dead Man
Walking in the spring. She is forever thankful to her
daughter, Ainslee, and her husband, Nathan, for their
uplifting spirits and amazing support.
JOHN SULLIV AN (Prospector) is new to Pittsburg,
having recently retired as a NYS Assistant Attorney
General, and Deputy Medicaid Inspector General in Albany,
N.Y. He is a widower and the father of four grown
daughters. This is his second foray into the world of
community theatre, having had a cameo role in a comedy by
a local playwright in Sackets Harbor N.Y. Sullivan states
that the message of the play is a timely one and that he is
glad to be involved in this PSU production.
ROBERT WILSON (Ragpicker) has always been
interested in theatre. He has been seen in a few productions
here at Pittsburg State University such as The Jungle Book
and Midsummer Night's Dream. Wilson states that he can
really relate to his role as the Ragpicker in the sense that he
cares about those around him and wants the best for them.,
just as the Ragpicker does.

The design inspirations for The Madwoman of Chaillot are a mixture of
old and new, past and present, re-purposed fabrics and items along with
hopeful new ones carrying bright thoughts of a better future.

If that seems slightly off kilter, it is because everything about The
Madwoman ofChaillot is just that. There are mad touches here and
there, out of place, but fitting in the world of the misfits like Countess
Aurelia and her Clochards (street people). It all fits in the Grande
Scheme of things.
My inspirations came from the late 1940's-early 50's photographers,
who with their black and white shots created their own genre of art,
French Humanist Photography, and the photographers who graced the
covers of magazines with French fashion, reviving an industry in periL
A few of these include Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert
Doisneau, and Willy Ronis. These artists made France into France
again, amidst a shell-shocked Europe and a world seeking to build itself
up again, just as the Madwoman and her People of Paris hope to save
and protect their beloved home in their own, albeit crazy, way.

It was a major challenge to get two full sets designed and
stay within budget. The "modular" concept was derived from
budgetary influences as well as stage space ...both on and off
stage that is. However, the result came out nicely and all
goals were met.
