DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION (DDR)
DDR is one of the core pieces of active
gaming equipment that helped motivate
the interactive fitness revolution. The
object of the game is to coordinate the
user’s steps with the arrows on the screen
while dancing to popular music. DDR
utilizes the best sensor technology to ease impact on the joints
during vigorous movement and challenge the individual. It will make
you sweat and best of all it’s fun.
XR-BOARDS
Snowboard down a mountain, skateboard
through the city or catch a wave surfing. The
XR-Board utilizes a Playstation 2 to create a
real snowboarding, skateboarding or surfing

body to control the player. Legs and core
muscles are used as if doing the real thing.
CATEYE GAMEBIKE DUELER SYSTEM
Control steering, speed and tricks while getting
a workout. Play against the computer or
compete against your friend. The faster you
pedal, the faster your vehicle moves. The most
popular games are off-road, speedboat and
motorcycle racing games.

WHY XRKADE®?
There is a health crisis among our youth. Poor choice of foods and
an inactive lifestyle are contributing to obesity, one of the leading
preventable causes of death in the United States. XRKade® is the
perfect defense. There are over 90 million Generation Gamers in the
US causing the video game industry to grow over 43% in 2007.
XRKade® helps people become more physically active while still
playing video games and by bringing this population into an
environment where a workout is fun and competitive.
XRKADE® CAMP
Do you want your kids active this summer? XRKade® camp is a full
day interactive gaming camp. Kids will participate in competitions,
battles and achieve individual goals. Camps include lunch, snacks,

Member SPOTlight!
Mattye Pollard Cole
and Cliff Cole
are charter members of the club,
joining a year after marrying. Mattye
is a native Coloradoan, taught Math
at Cherry Creek High School for 14
years, then worked for the state
developing curriculum. She retired in
2003. Mattye says she has exercised
at least three times a week for the
last 31 years! Cliff was an engineer
for a living and was quite an athlete.
He was a competitive swimmer and loved running, cycling and
white water kayaking.
Their lives changed forever in 2004 when Cliff started
experiencing memory loss and his sense of direction was
fading. He was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer’s at
the age of 55. Mattye feels they were lucky to have a
physician’s diagnosis in the early stages of the disease. At this
time Cliff has lost most of his cognitive ability and some of his
ability to communicate. Mattye says,“Exercise and the club
help Cliff’s outlook, his mood and his overall quality of life.”
They both enjoy Spinning. Cliff still swims and likes taking
long walks. You may have done a double take in Spinning now
and then, when Cliff’s twin brother Chip visits the club. Mattye
takes BodyPUMP and HI NRG aerobics. Mattye’s mom, Lee
Pollard also comes to the club occasionally and at 91 years of
age beats Mattye when they play golf.
Mattye is a patient woman who is dealing so graciously with
Cliff’s illness. “The teacher in me believes that power comes
through knowledge” and she was very open in sharing
information about this dreadful disease. She has high praises
for the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association and has become an
advocate for them.
GATC is proud to be a safe, positive place for this wonderful
couple to spend part of their day. We hope…. the best part.
For more information on the Alzheimer’s Association, go to

INVESTMENTS
Over the last couple months I have been asked several times by
various members “How is Greenwood doing? Things are tough out
there, is the club feeling it too?” I’d be lying to you if I told you we
were not feeling some pinch, but I would also be lying to you if I
told you that we were in the same boat as many other health clubs
throughout the country. Why…because we’re NOT like any other
health club. There are many reasons for this, but one of the main
reasons is our members! By and far, we have the most dedicated and
loyal group of members than any health club in the area. We have
3750 memberships which equates to over 7,500 members. Of those
memberships, 1195 have been with us for over 10 years (32%) and
387 and have been with us for over 20 years (10%)! Not only does
your dedication show in the years spent at GATC but it also shows
in your usage, that you care about your health, how you look and
how you feel. Yes, we are watching! We track usage on every one of
our members and now, more than ever it’s important that you are
receiving value for your membership and using the club is the best
way to get results. So, please take advantage of the services we
offer; 123 group exercise classes per week, nearly 10,000 square feet
of weight, stretching and functional training equipment, two
cardiovascular areas with over 100 pieces of equipment, five outdoor
tennis courts and seven indoor clay courts, two 25-meter lap pools,
adult and splash pools, complimentary pilates mat classes, Thermal®
Yoga classes, basketball, indoor running track, and beautifully
appointed full service locker rooms with all the amenities including
whirlpool, steam and sauna. We realize that you have choices for
fitness; small studios, recreation centers, express facilities, health
club “chains”, and because we live in the great state of Colorado,
you can exercise outdoors for most of the year. Our goal is to get you
moving and keep you moving! Obviously, we are trying our best to
make sure your choice still lies with Greenwood and that’s why we
work so hard on one of our core values “continuous improvement”
by increasing the level of service we offer, keeping the facility clean,
providing you with the best and most innovative fitness equipment
available and upgrading our facilities.
I hope you’ve had a chance to look at the 2008 Survey Report
Summary located on our website. This survey is a tool we use to
listen and respond to our members. We value your suggestions and
feedback and want to provide an environment that is motivating,
friendly and makes you want to come back for more. The survey
provides important information that helps us make decisions about
our operations, facilities and capital improvements. Please make sure
you complete the survey each year. It’s a great way to voice your
opinion and concerns and it helps us plan for the future.
So…what is happening in 2009?
• It’s been all over the news the past few years; the rate of
childhood obesity is increasing substantially. It’s important that
Greenwood fulfills its’ goal of getting everyone to move including
our young members. As our family memberships increase we are
faced with a dilemma of providing adequate amounts of space for
both our adult and young members. And, our young members are
also more complicated in that exercise has to be fun for them to
participate consistently. So, we are building XRKade®, 2100 square
feet of “Active Gaming” developed by a group of gamers and
fitness enthusiasts with a goal of making games and activity more
fun. XRKade® will be located in Studio 2 and will include 27 games
that are all operated by moving! See the first three pages of The
Pulse to find out more information about XRKade®.
• Squash court one will be remodeled as a multipurpose room
hosting all the activities that currently occur in Studio 2
• The ceiling in Studio 1 and the lower cardiovascular area will be
remodeled to match the new weight room including the
installation of energy efficient lighting, new diffusers, etc. and
both rooms will be painted
• The indoor pool deck will be resurfaced
• Install two pro bounce courts on our outdoor tennis courts. The
courts themselves are a better playing surface allowing for less
wear and tear on your body and the payback in regards to not
having to resurface the courts annually will help our bottom line
• Replace cardiovascular equipment with newer models, and replace
and add strength equipment in the weight room
These are just a few of the improvements we will be making to your
club in 2009. We hope these improvements along with the
Greenwood staff and the relationships you have built with your
fellow members will keep you using the club for many years to come.
Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club is proud to be your partner in
fitness…an investment in the club, is an investment in you!

WHY INCORPORATE PILATES EQUIPMENT VS. MAT ONLY
While mat classes, complimentary with your membership, are the
typical introduction to Pilates for many participants, classical mat
exercises can be difficult when you are just starting out. Beginners
do not have the core strength or the Pilates knowledge to perform
the exercises correctly. The classical Pilates Method is based on a
full, integrated system of equipment. The mat exercises are just part
of the technique (only 25 percent of the Pilates exercise repertoire
can be performed on a mat) and often the first step toward learning
the equipment. By adding equipment into your Pilates routine, you
will experience a more authentic, quality experience. The equipment
works better and faster to change the body, as the springs on the
equipment provide support and resistance that allow an individual
to enhance their core connection in a way that is difficult to do on
the mat alone. If you are injured, I suggest you start Pilates by
working with an instructor in the studio on the equipment, where
the exercises are more “closed chain” and appropriate for the injured
body. The equipment allows you to shape, tone, lengthen and align
quite differently than the mat. In short, the equipment works better
and faster to change the body. Advanced core work is available on
equipment for the more accomplished practitioner. Last but not
least, working on the equipment is fun and never boring!
The GATC Pilates instructors know the importance of programming.
It is our goal to continually progress our clients to the next level of
accomplishment. We know our members expect results and are up for
challenging workouts with the expectation of improved bodies, from
reducing pain to smaller waistlines. We know how important it is to
include mixed level classes as well as a full complement of
equipment based and mat classes on our schedule. We offer many
programming options for you and have based our equipment fee
schedule around our program offerings. You can now try any of our
equipment based classes for the same cost. As a member of GATC,
you can take any class and pull from one package at reduced rates.

DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY!
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new
landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust
Work, family, the economy, politics, school, health...the future. In
our current world, we are responsible for endless lists of tasks and
concerns, duties, plans and decisions that consume great amounts
of energy and personal resources. When was the last time you were
able to live a day free from worry? Chances are the responsibilities
of life stay close to your mind and your heart around the clock.
Constant worry and stress can take a toll on the mind and the body.
Regular exercise, a healthy diet and adequate sleep can all help
equip us to effectively and positively deal with whatever obstacles
occur in our lives. But how do our thought patterns contribute to our
physical health?
GATC yoga instructor Suzanne
Matthews says, “Meditation is the
quieting of the mind. Many of us
believe that our minds run our lives.
We believe that our mind has no “off”
switch. As we develop a meditation
practice, our mind becomes a tool
that we can use as we choose. A
common analogy compares our mind to three horses pulling a
wagon. With the undisciplined mind pulling in three different
directions, we feel scattered, anxious and out of control. Meditation
becomes the reins with which we harness the strength of our mind.”
Meditation can be whatever it takes to have quiet time within your
own body and mind. It can be a few moments at the beginning or
end of the day when you reflect on the positive elements in your life.
Meditation can occur during a yoga or even a Spinning® class when
you are able to turn off the mental chatter and be fully present in
the moment. It can happen during the cool-down of any one of our
120 complimentary group exercise classes, when you take a few
moments to thank your body for what it just accomplished and set
your intention for the rest of the day.
We are living in a challenging time, but our community within the
walls of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club can help us hold on to
what is positive and good. “As we wade through the challenges, the
opportunities, the joys and the sorrows of our everyday lives, we
must also honor our need to look upon our lives with new eyes, and
the opportunity is always there. One morning spent in silence, an
evening at a yoga workshop or an
afternoon of meditation…and we
discover the truth of our lives and the
roles we want to play in them,”
(Meditations from the Mat).
Look for an upcoming meditation
workshop with Suzanne Matthews. We
are committed to helping you be happy.

GREENWOOD TIGER SHARKS
The Tiger Sharks continue to grow in numbers and with that growth comes
greater commitment which results in faster swimming. From day to day the
athletes practice with peers of similar competitive abilities and commitment
levels. Training with this dynamic mix of athletes allows the Tiger Shark
swimmers to exceed even their own expectations. Racing one another in practice
pushes the swimmers to race other competitors in meets, allowing each athlete
to achieve their personal goals. If we added up the time dropped over the last
six months, it would amount to several hours for the approximately 80 athletes
actively participating in meets.
The team has aged-up a number of athletes during the last short course season
(September ’08 – March ’09) who continue to race competitively in their new
age groups. Because of a consistent training regime and steady coaching, the
team was ready for their short-course championship meet including Silver State,
Senior State, 14&Under State Championships and the USA Swimming/Speedo
Western Region Section Championship meet in Federal Way, WA. Greenwood
had 25 swimmers qualify for the 14&Under State Championships, 13 more than
a year ago, had dozens of athletes compete at Silver State and sent four
swimmers to Sectional Championships, four more then a year ago.
In order to keep the swimmers focused and wanting to continue through the
tough days, occasional games of water polo are thrown in to build team
camaraderie. After our long course season wraps up in August, the 2009-2010
short course season will begin September 14th. It’s never too early to contact
one of the coaches to get your young athlete swimming year-round.
The practice schedule will change during the summer for all Tiger Shark groups,
so please be sure to check our website at www.greenwoodatc.com and our new
blog, www.greenwoodtigersharks.com for information and updates. The coaches
and staff are using the blog, as well as emails, to provide up-to-date, time
sensitive information, articles and items of interest. Add the GTS blog to your
list of favorites and check it often!

YOUR HEALTH: THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN MAKE
In tough economic times we scrutinize our investments, yet the one
thing we get the most return on, we typically ignore… our health.
We internalize stress, eat poorly for comfort and spend less time
taking care of ourselves. Thinking we can manage the problems we
are dealing with by cutting out the “luxury” of exercise could not be
further from the truth. Physical exercise and proper diet have been
clinically shown to make the human body more resilient to stress.
Mental acuity, better physical stamina and more daily energy are all
directly attributed to a consistent daily activity schedule. In
addition, mind/body classes such as Pilates and Yoga can greatly
enhance flexibility and lower stress levels.
Many companies are starting to quantify and reward healthier
individuals. In the state of Louisiana, health insurance premiums are
being lowered or raised depending on your current health status.
More and more health and life insurance premiums are not based
solely on age, but also on current health status. Some employers
will even reimburse employees who take less sick time or reward
employees for using the company’s corporate wellness program.
So where exactly should you spend your money? Start first with
health screenings that are not routinely done at your doctor’s office.
Heart screenings (blood or imaging), bone density and body
composition are all great tests to have done semi-annually. Spend a
little extra money on a fitness professional to help you develop a
workout game plan. Buy equipment that allows you to do outdoor
activities; i.e. hiking shoes, road bikes, skis, running shoes. Take
advantage of GATC’s complimentary Yoga program and Pilates mat
classes. Seek out nutritional advice from our Registered Dietitian,
Beth Jauquet to develop a structured long term eating plan. Stay
away from fad diets, they do more harm than good (please see
page 15).
Invest in your health and receive a multitude of benefits in return.

LACTATE THRESHOLD FOR RUNNERS & CYCLISTS
Optimized Endurance Services will be performing Lactate Threshold
(LT) Tests at GATC. A lactate threshold test consists of a graded
exercise protocol to simulate increased workload. The appearance of
lactate in blood is measured from a pin prick on the finger with an
analyzer that gives a reading in millimoles per liter. The LT test is
used to determine the point at which the human body falls behind
in buffering and struggles to stay efficient. Knowing this point can
assist in setting up training zones for better performance and to
optimize your time and recovery. Don’t run or ride your next race
without this valuable information.

Life is full of roadblocks. Something always seems to be stopping us
from easily moving forward through life. A sick child or parent, overtime
at work, vacations, home re-model…all reasons that make you put
exercise in the back seat. During my time as a trainer and Member
Coach, I have seen many people go from a steady exercise routine,
coming into the club four to five days a week, to being MIA for several
weeks or even months. How do you avoid becoming one of those
people? The answer is to make exercise a priority in your life. Talk to
your spouse, your family or your boss and arrange to make some time
for yourself. Leave work early one day a week or get up 30 minutes
earlier one day a week to get to the club. Weekends are great days to
add to your workout regimen. Try an express class like Ab Lab or our
exclusive 45 minute Energy Zone™ classes. Take a walk during your
lunch break or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Find ways to
move, keeping in mind this is all to help you become a healthier person
so you can be around longer for your family. Roadblocks will always be
a part of life. The challenge is finding a way to get around them so you
can keep moving forward.
GETTING THE MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
Do you get the feeling that in order to eat healthy
food, you have to spend a fortune at the grocery store?
Healthy nutrition does not have to be costly. In fact,
some of the most nutrient packed foods on the
supermarket shelves are actually the most cost
effective. Here are the top five foods that pack a
nutritious punch without breaking the bank.
1. Eggs – At about 25 cents per egg, this superfood is a fantastic source
of lean protein. Eggs are also a great source of B vitamins, choline,
and Vitamin A. For a little bit more, you can purchase eggs that are
enriched with omega 3 fat and vitamin E.
2. Milk – Milk is the best source of calcium and vitamin D that money
can buy. At 20 cents per serving for conventional and 30 cents per
serving for organic, milk is truly a nutritional bargain.
3. Legumes and lentils – Rich in protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber
and iron, legumes and lentils are quite possibly the perfect food.
The cost is a mere 10 cents per serving for canned and five cents per
serving for dried.
4. Frozen fruit and vegetables – We all know that we are supposed to
eat our “5 a day”, however, this can be expensive in the winter when
fresh produce may be out of season. Up to half the cost yet
all the nutrition of fresh, frozen fruits and vegetables are a great
alternative.
5. Oats – With their ability to reduce cholesterol, oats are certainly a
whole grain best buy at a cost of less than 10 cents per serving. Oats
also make a perfect breakfast when cooked with milk and raisins,
two other nutritional bargains.

Progression: The Art of Systematic Training
How much weight should I lift? How many reps should I do?
What exercises are the best for my legs? These seem like easy
questions to answer, but the answers might surprise you.
Being “married” to a certain number of reps, weight,
intensity or exercise selection will soon have you hitting a
plateau, thus diminishing your gains and leading to boredom.
An integrated training program must be utilized to achieve
consistent results. What does that mean? Basically, include
all of the necessary components of training in your program.
They include core training, balance training, reactive
training, resistance training, speed training and flexibility
training. The Optimum Performance Training (OPT) Model was
developed by the National Academy of Sports Medicine
(NASM) to create a systematic approach of training.
According to NASM, the OPT Model is broken down into seven
phases of training:
• Phase 1: Corrective Exercise Training
• Phase 2: Integrated Stabilization Training
• Phase 3: Stabilization Equivalent Training
• Phase 4: Muscular Development Training

2009 TENNIS CLUB
TEAM MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Suzette Riddle
Tennis Teaching Pro
Suzette began employment as a tennis teaching
professional at GATC in November 2004. Suzette
grew up in Potomac, Maryland where she was a
nationally ranked junior player. She graduated from the University
of Virginia on a tennis scholarship, then taught and coached
players of all levels at several east coast tennis academies and
clubs. Suzette and her husband Barry (also a part-time GATC pro)
have three children, daughter Madison (14), son Monroe (11) and
daughter Morgan (7).
• Phase 5: Maximal Strength Training
• Phase 6: Elastic Equivalent Training
• Phase 7: Maximal Power Training
These phases have a lot of fancy words, but in essence they
help you determine how many reps, how much weight and
which exercises to select. In the earlier phases, the
repetitions are usually between 15 and 25, the weight is
moderate and the exercise selection is functional (to increase
stabilization). As we move to the later phases, the repetitions
drop below 15, the weight is heavier and we choose exercises
that are more traditional and stable. The last two phases
address the power needs of recreational and elite athletes for
their respective sports.
Basically, using the OPT Model allows for progression. As a
person adapts to a training stimulus, a strategy of advancing
the exercise loads needs to be implemented. This ensures
that improvements will continue over time. If the progression
advances too quickly, an injury may occur.
Using a system of phase type training like this has been
proven to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass and
improve overall health in the general and post-rehab
populations. Not sure where or how to start? Contact an
NASM certified member of our personal training staff. Using
a systematic, integrated and functional training program will
help reduce injuries and build high levels of strength,
coordination and dynamic flexibility.
