Aytch: Memoirs of a Confederate Soldier, Starring Bobby Funk, August 3 At UAB Town and Gown, Clark Theatre Rebecca Wells is a novelist, actor and playwright who grew up on Bayou Roberts in Central Louisiana, where French Catholic Louisiana meets Northern Baptist Louisiana. Her first novel, Little Altars Evelywhere, won the Western States Book Award for Fiction in 1992 and was a Literary Guild Alternate Selection and Editor's Choice. A reprint of Little Altars Evelywhere was published by HarperCollins to coincide with the publication of her second novel, Divine Secrets of the Yo-Yo Sisterhood, which has been described as "a deliciously entertaining and ultinlately, deeply moving novel about the complex bonds between a mother and her daughter." To quote Tom Robbins, author of Even Cowgirls get the Blues, Divine Secrets is "the sweet and sad and goofY monkey dance of life, as performed by a bevy of unforgettable Southern Belles in a verdant garden of moonlit prose. Poignantly coo-coo, the Ya-Yas (and their Petite Ya-Yas) will prance, priss, ponder and party their way into your sincere affection." Divine Secrets of the Yo-Yo Sisterhood was released in paperback by HarperPerennial in April, 1997. An accomplished actress, Wells has perfl)rnled in theaters throughout the United States. Variety has called her acting "luminous ... funny, touching and important." As a playwright, Wells' play Splittin' Hairs (for which she also created the leading role), was nominated for Showtime Televisions' Excellence in American Theater Award. Her play, Gloria Duplex (for which she created the title role) was hailed by the Seattle Post-IntelligenceI' as "one of the glories of the decade." A seasoned lecturer and creativity coach, Ms. Wells has taught her workshop, "Learning to Compost: Writing nom the Heart" throughout the cOlUltry. Her teleplays include scripts for ABC and CBS. The subject of a West Coast PBS documentary, Wells has received numerous awards including the Washington States Arts Conmussion Playwright Fellowship. Seattle Arts Commission Original Works Fellowship, King County Fiction Fellowship, and the Artists Tmst of Washington Fellowship in Literature, as well as the Artists Tmst Fellowship Fellowslup in Theatre. Ms. Wells lives on an island in Wasllington State's Puget Sound with her husband and their cocker sp31uel, Lulu. She is currently at work on a novel based on her play, Splittin' Hairs.
