Hennie Konings
Dance choreographed by Hennie Konings on the basis of traditional steps and
figures from the general Russian folk dance repertoire. The song is a well-known
chastushki, the first part with a more or less standard text, and the final verses that
are invented by the singers themselves. The dance was first presented in
Switzerland in 2007.
“Four yards”, from the first line of the accompanying song, четыре (chetyre) = four,
двор (dvor) = yard, courtyard.

Barynya = litt. old word for a woman of certain standard, living at a farm. Often used in folk songs for rhythmical verses or to fill up refrains.

Hennie Konings
The song is a lyrical and arranged version of a famous game song, in which a boy in
the ctr of the circle dances around, chooses a girl with his kerchief, leads her to the
ctr and receives 3 kisses. Then the girl dances and picks out a boy, a.s.o. This game
is in all kinds of variants known all over Russia and in many other countries. In the
last line of the song the boy gives the wreath to his love, which is symbolized in the
dance by the chain figure. The chain also refers to the stalks of the morning glory
(vyunok) that wind CW around things. Inspired by this game, Hennie Konings
arranged this dance to the beautiful recording of the song by the Pyatnitsky Folk
Ensemble from Moscow. Hennie dedicates this dance to Tatyana Ustinova, the late
leader and choreographer of this ensemble, who preserved – as one of the few of
the great 20th century Russian choreographers – regional style features in her works.
The dance was first introduced in Germany in 2008.

Hennie Konings
Hopak is a very famous and virtuoso Ukrainian folk dance. It is often used by folk
dance ensembles as a spectacular final dance of the show. This version is assembled
by Hennie Konings from typical Hopak basic steps in stage style. The dance was first
presented during the Summer Dance Week in Germany in 2001.

Traditional, arrangement by Hennie Konings
A ya po lugu is the name of the accompanying song, while the dance is called
Korzinochka, meaning little basket (this name refers to the ‘woven’ arm position of
the dancers in the circle). A dance like Korzinochka can be found all over Russia.
Also the song A ya po lugu is well-known all over Russia. It is humorous dance song
and a little bit macabre, since the gnat which is sung about (and which stands
symbolically for a boy chasing the girl) is decapitated at the end of the song. The
rendition of this song, as performed by Folklore Ensemble Ozorniye Naigrishi on this
recording, follows the way the famous Fyodrova sisters performed the song many
years ago. These delightfully singing sisters came from the town of Pskov in
northern Russia, so the style of performance of this song and dance is like in
northern Russia. The dance in this selection was first introduced by Hennie Konings
during a dance workshop in Ronnenburg, Germany in 2001.

The song is a dance song from the repertoire of the Don Cossacks, named after the
Don river in southern Russia, the region with its capital Rostov-na-Donu. The dance
is put together by Hennie Konings based on material form the Cossack dance
tradition. Basic figures are choreographed by Hennie, while the solo variations were
learned from Olga Melnik, the choreographer of the Ozorniye Naigrishi folklore
ensemble from Donetsk, Ukraine. The dance was first introduced during a workshop
in Remscheid, Germany, in 2001.

Kozachok is a traditional folk dance known all over Russia and Ukraine in many
different local variants. This version is from the repertoire of the Don Cossacks. It
was learned from Aleksey Shilin in 1993 during a dance trip in Kolchugina, Russia.
He is a leading ethnomusicologist from Moscow, Russia, who notated this dance
during a field trip among the Cossacks of the Don river area in southern Russia.

This dance is an adaptation by Hennie Konings based on folk dance material from
a.o. the Cossack dance tradition of southern Russia, and an example of the Russian
folk dance school. The central part of the dance is based on the peresek principle,
which litt. means ‘crossing through’ or ‘cutting through’. It refers to multiple dancers
dancing different stamping rhythms at the same time (criss-crossing one another, as
if they are trying to ‘over-dance’ each other), together building a kind of ‘multivoiced’ rhythmical sound, typical for southern Russian folk dances.
“In our yard”, from the first line of the accompanying song “Что-то у нас
нерадостно на дворе” (Shto-to u nas neradostno na dvore: Something is not happy
in our yard), a Cossack wedding song.

As a dance type, the quadrille was first introduced in ballrooms in Russian cities in
the nineteenth century as a result of upper-class connections with France and other
Western European countries. Later it became popular among all parts of the
population, in villages as well as in the countryside. Before the quadrille, with its
fixed figures, sequences and dance and music forms, Russians always danced in an
improvisational fashion. For them, the most remarkable element of a quadrille was
the fact that the figures were fixed, not so much the quadratic shape of the original
French quadrille. As a result, Russians named dances in other shapes, like couples
on a line, also “quadrille.” Nowadays, even dances in a circle can be called quadrille.
Like the French quadrilles, Russian quadrilles usually consist of a series of separate
dances (3 to 5), each with its own figure, steps, melody and (sometimes) formation.
In the city ballrooms, when the quadrille was announced, the men invited their
partners to join them in the dance, escorting them to the starting position on the
dance floor. Often, the person who requested the quadrille, then called the name of
the first dance of the series and the musicians began to play. After the first dance,
the name of the next dance was called, and the formation was changed if applicable.
In the same way the consecutive dances were treated. This particular line quadrille
is taken from a film from 1970 showing examples of Russian folk dances. The film
was made by Andrey Klimov, who was a dancer and dance teacher and a
representative of the Russian folk dance school of Tatyana Ustinova, the famous
choreographer of the Pyatnitsky Folk Ensemble. The dance is, therefore, most likely
taken from the choreographic material of Ms. Ustinova.

Hennie Konings
A grupovaya plyaska (folk dance in a group) from the Don Cossacks. The Don
Cossacks are named after the Don River, which rises some 200 km south of Moscow
and flows out in the Azov Sea. The Don Cossacks live in the lower Don river basin, in
the region of the city of Rostov-na-Donu, their capital, close to the Ukrainian border.
The steps and figures in this dance are partly adapted by Hennie Konings and based
on dance material learned from Vitali Bartsov, choreographer of the State Don
Cossack Ensemble, and partly learned from Aleksey Shilin, an ethnomusicologist
from Moscow, specialised in traditional dances.

The dance is choreographed by Olga Melnik, the choreographer of the Ozorniye
Naigrishi Folk Ensemble form Donetsk, Ukraine. It was learned from Olga during a
dance workshop in Heerlen, the Netherlands in 2003. The dance goes back to the
girls dance tradition of Russia, often ritual in character. The song to which this dance
is set, is a lyrical love song from the Kuban Cossacks. The Cossacks live in southern
Russia in the region named after the Kuban river, with its capital Krasnodar.

Chastushki are sung, 4 line verses, originally often improvised on the spot.
Sometimes, different verses tell a complete story, but more often each verse stands
alone. Many chastushki are humorous and often satirical or jokingly towards
villagers, friends or even leaders or politicians. During chastushki singing, bystanders
perform simple steps and dance figures, especially during the instrumental
interludes. In this dance, a specific but easy dance figure has been fixed by Hennie
Konings in order for us to be able to dance continuously. The ‘trampling’ in meas 5-6
is characteristic of folk dances of southern Russia. Sometimes, dancers perform
different rhythmical stamping steps at the same time, in this way together ‘building’
a multi-voiced rhythmical sound. Another version is the ‘question & answer’-type,
where one person does a rhythm with his/her feet (‘question’) and the partner
‘answers’ with something better or different. The latter version is reflected in this
dance. This dance was first presented in Germany in 2008.
The original musical piece is called Частушки под диликанье (chastushki pod
dilikanye), which means chastushki with dilikanye, the latter word most probably

The opening dance of the Ukrainian Suite from the Soviet choreographer Igor
Moiseyev is Vesnyanki (Spring round dance), based on the Spring ritual performed
by girls. Ukrainskiy khorovod is an adaptation by Hennie Konings of this dance, set
to the Ukrainian lyrical folk song Ta siyu redku. It was first presented during the
Summer Dance Week in Germany in 2001.

As a dance type, the quadrille was first introduced in ballrooms in Russian cities in
the nineteenth century as a result of upper-class connections with France and other
Western European countries. Later it became popular among all parts of the
population, in villages as well as in the countryside. Before the quadrille, with its
fixed figures, sequences and dance and music forms, Russians always danced in an
improvisational fashion. For them, the most remarkable element of a quadrille was
the fact that the figures were fixed, not so much the quadratic shape of the original
French quadrille. As a result, Russians named dances in other shapes, like couples
on a line, also “quadrille.” Nowadays, even dances in a circle can be called quadrille.
Like the French quadrilles, Russian quadrilles usually consist of a series of separate
dances (3 to 5), each with its own figure, steps, melody and (sometimes) formation.
In other cases, different figures are danced to the same music. This quadrille is from
the Arkhangelsk region in Northern Russia, adapted by Hennie Konings based on
dance material from the repertoire of the North-Russian Folk Ensemble.

This dance can be referred to as an igravaya plyaska, a game dance. It is from the
Voronezh region in southern Russia, usually danced in springtime. Each stanza is like
a command or order for the person in the centre of the circle, who has to obey the
command. In the tradition the game was usually improvised but this version has
been worked out into a structured dance by Hennie Konings. The stamping rhythms
are characteristic for many folk dances of southern Russia. Sometimes, one dancer
performs a certain rhythm by stamping his/her feet (this is like a ‘question’) followed
by the partner or some other dancer who does another rhythm (like an ‘answer’). In
other cases, different rhythmical stamping steps are done by several persons at the
same time, in this way together ‘building’ a multi-voiced rhythmical sound. The latter
occurs in this dance.

In the city ballrooms, when the quadrille was announced, the men invited their
partners to join them in the dance, escorting them to the starting position on the
dance floor. Often, the person who requested the quadrille, then called the name of
the first dance of the series and the musicians began to play. After the first dance,
the name of the next dance was called, and the formation was changed if applicable.
In the same way the consecutive dances were treated. This dance is one of such
parts of a complete quadrille. It is taken from the book Russkiye kadrili, Moscow,
1953, and is choreographed by S.V. Vladimirova. This figure is danced to the song
Kak u nashikh u vorot, a well known dance song all over Russia, to which many
different dances are done.
