Abstract
Harvey Penick was an Austin institution who served the Austin Country Club in some
capacity from 1912 until 1995. From 1912 to 1923 he caddied. In 1923 he became the
head professional right out of high school. He remained the pro until retiring in 1971,
when his son, Tinsley, took over the position. Harvey Penick continued as the golf pro
emeritus from 1971 until he passed away in 1995. He taught many famous golf pros
including Ben Crenshaw, Betty Jameson, Tom Kite, Sandra Palmer, Betsy Rawls, Kathy
Whitworth and Mickey Wright. His gentle manner and forever positive attitude about
golf and life endeared him to his many friends and pupils. He became nationally and
world famous when he penned The Little Red Book with author Bud Shrake in 1992.
That book of golf tips and stories became the biggest selling sports book of all time and
was followed up with three more.

Biographical Note
Born on October 23, 1904, just across the street from the Austin Country Club,
Harvey Penick became enamored with golf at a young age. His older brothers caddied

at the club and Harvey wanted to join them, but his mother had a rule: no caddying
until you are 8. According to Harvey’s handwritten notes for The Little Red Book he
began caddying at the Austin Country Club around 1912. He observed the golfers, their
idiosyncrasies both mental and physical, and transformed into a student of the game.
Leaders of the Austin Country Club took note of his passion and dedication and when
the head professional left for a new position, they appointed Harvey Penick to the post.
The Country Club even held the job open for Penick so that he could graduate from
high school first, as stipulated by his mother.
Penick took out almost all the money he had in the bank, bought the previous
golf professional’s clubs and equipment, and became the head professional in 1923 at
the age of 18. One year later he saw Helen Holmes in the church choir and they
married in 1929, remaining so until his passing. Together they had two children: a
daughter, Kathryn and a son, Tinsley. Early on, Harvey Penick had dreams of
becoming a touring professional, that is, until he heard about a certain player at the
1928 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields in Chicago. While he was on the practice green a
friend came over and said, “you’ve got to see this guy hit.” That guy turned out to be
Walter Hagen and Harvey later related that when Hagen hit the ball it went like a
bullet. He stated with competition like that around he decided he would be better
served being a golf teacher rather than a touring pro. He taught legends such as Betty
Jameson, Sandra Palmer, Betsy Rawls, one of the first LPGA standout performers,
Kathy Whitworth and Mickey Wright. Along with being the pro at the Austin Country
Club, Harvey Penick also coached the University of Texas golf team from 1931 to 1963,
during which time the Longhorns won 22 of a possible 31 Southwest Conference titles.
In the 1960s, Harvey Penick began coaching two of the most famous golfers in
the modern era: Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite. Each of them credits his faithful devotion
and positivity with molding them as both people and golfers. Tom Kite declared that
he would never have won any tournaments without Penick’s teachings. Kite was once
the all-time leading money winner in PGA Tour history and won the 1992 U.S. Open,
making that quite a statement. Crenshaw credited a putting tip that Harvey gave him

about visualizing the ball going into the hole for his victory at the 1995 Masters,
immediately after Penick’s demise. Harvey was relentlessly positive with his pupils
(even after a 1972 golf cart accident that resulted in a broken back) and never told
anyone that they were doing something wrong. Instead, Penick would give the pupil
encouragement and ask them to think about the golf issue in another way.
The final life-changing decision Penick made was to relate his golf wisdom and
stories in Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book with author Bud Shrake. The book was
based on a learning notebook that Harvey carried around for decades and which he
never shared with anyone, except his son Tinsley, until Shrake convinced him to
publish the contents in the early 1990s. Released in 1992, The Little Red Book almost
instantly became a national and international bestseller as word got out about Harvey’s
gentle and positive outlook on golf and life, with golfers worldwide clamoring to share
his insights. Harvey Penick passed away on April 2, 1995, but through his books and
the people whose lives he touched, his positive influence continues unabated.
Scope and Content
13 Boxes, 263 Folders: 8 Albums, 10 Artifacts, 125 Books, 3 Cassettes, 2CDs, 266
Clippings, 908 Pieces of correspondence, 3 DVDs, 78 Magazines, 203 Photographs , 22
Slides, 10 Pieces of sports equipment, 34 Videos, no date, 1899-2012 (2130 items)
The Harvey Penick Papers contain a myriad of items. The clippings offer insight
into a man revered both by golfers and by anyone valuing a positive outlook, while also
illustrating the impact his books had on society. The correspondence covers both the
period before the Little Red Book and the one after the tome made Harvey Penick
famous worldwide. The books demonstrate that Penick never wanted to cease learning
to aid in his pupils’ efforts. The photographs evince Penick’s importance to golf and to
his family. The records allow for a deeper and more thorough understanding of the
role Harvey Penick played as both golf teacher and life coach. It is apparent that he
treasured the opportunity to teach millions both in person and through his books.
