THERE’S MORE TO
CORNWALL COLLEGE
Welcome to
the Festival
In 2012 you will find all the traditions
that help to make Golowan a unique
festival. To complement this, we have
an arts programme that has something
for everyone. We’ve got comedy,
drama, salsa, Senegalese, Latin and
Cornish music. Cornish story telling,
film and an afternoon tea dance with
a difference leads us into an evening
of music and dance – a ‘Happy Night’
with Dalla. And on Quay Fair Day,
be prepared to be entertained at
Groove is in the Park where we will
be celebrating the musical talents
of young people in Penwith, or at
the Celebration of Song in Morrab
Gardens, where local community choirs
will perform on the Bandstand.
Trust in Song is the launch of a new
partnership between Golowan and The
National Trust. It offers opportunities
for children and young people to take
part in songwriting workshops – all
inspired by our beautiful West Cornwall
landscape. Join us in Greenmarket
for a Mazey Day Folk Festival and
an gastronomic treat with many of
Cornwall’s top caterers.
A year has passed since Penzance broke
the Guinness World Records for the
Pirates on the Prom event, so now it’s
time to dust down those pirate outfits
as you prepare to take part in a one
legged pirate race or the pasty and
spoon race … yes it’s the Golympix.
Quay Fair Day is a fancy dress day
where anything goes.
Golowan wouldn’t have become the
great festival it is without the help and
Golowan

commitment from all of our volunteers,
Friends of Golowan, Penzance Town
Council and our partners – The
National Trust, The Acorn, Sound,
Feast, The Exchange, Jubilee Pool,
Headland Printers, Penwith Radio,
Mounts Bay Academy, Humphry Davy
School and the Farmer’s Arms.
Finally, we would like to welcome the
official delegation from Concarneau
who will be joining us this year to
celebrate the 30th anniversary of its
twinning with Penzance, Golowan
is your festival. It’s a rich and diverse
community event that brings together
a community from all ages and
backgrounds to participate in, and
celebrate this wonderful festival.
We hope you enjoy Golowan 2012.

performance of the songs at Sound on

Go for
Gold in the
Golowan
Golympix!
Go for gold this year at the 2012
Golympix which will be taking place on
June 24th in Penzance as part of the
Golowan Festival. It’s about having fun;
taking part and, for the more competitive
– there will be medals to be won.
So, if you have a steady hand and nerves
of steel, take part in our pasty and spoon
race. Or for those of you who might
have a keen eye for target practice, then
Handbags at Dawn might be your
challenge.
There will be a chance to re-enact the
classic Olympic film in the adapted
Chariots of Tyres race, against the
strains of the iconic Vangelis ‘Chariots
of fire’ soundtrack.
If you are one of the 8,000 pirates
who helped Penzance to snatch the
Guinness World Book of Records title
for most pirates together, then it’s
time to dust off the cobwebs, don the
bandana and pull on the breeches, to
take part in a one and three legged
pirate race. Beware: the last pirate
through the finishing line might have to
walk the plank.
CULTURAL
OLYMPIAD
Kernocopia – near the harbour
24th June – 2pm and 3.30pm
But this isn’t your usual West End
Show.
Oh no, this is the good ship
Kernocopia and she’s bringing you
treasure, sporting treasure.
The oldest of these is Gogmagog. A
giant who is hurled in crashing waves
700 ft below by a man as high as his
ankle. As he hits the water something
happens that will change the world,
forever.
It’s the Olympic Games London, 104
years ago. The Cornish Rugby Team
is in the final, against the Aussies.
Through scrums, mud, dummies and
rain, the Aussies take the lead. But
when the final whistle blows, we are
all smiling.
‘Mother’ is 6’ft tall. She has a tribe
of fourteen children. She earns her
keep by ferrying corn, meat, drapery,
passengers and the odd carthorse
across the River Tamar in any storm. In
her spare time, she races. Undefeated,
she decides it’s time to take on the
boys, the French boys.
It’s 1938, the time of the great surfing
breakthrough – when Pip Staffieri
took one small step up for mankind in
Europe and you see it all, with a ‘99 in
your hand.
This is Kernocopia, and her epic
voyage is bringing you Cornwall’s
Sporting Treasures, as never seen
before.

Information
Kernocopia is an ambitious project that
is for the first time bringing Cornwall’s
sports, culture, arts and heritage
communities together to celebrate 2012.
At the heart of the project is a collection
of Cornish sporting stories. Working in
dance, film, song, poetry and theatre,
a team of talented artists have been
uncovering and bringing these stories
to life, some of them known, some
unknown, some with amazing historical
relevance and some that will really
astound.
Thanks to funding from Feast, Visit
Cornwall, Cornwall Council, Arts
Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund
people across Cornwall will be amazed,
engaged, inspired and entertained by
a 15 minute spectacular performance
exploring Cornwall’s iconic sporting
tales. The performance can be seen
along the route of the Torch Relay as it
journeys through Cornwall at sporting
and cultural events during 2012 and
at the Weymouth & Portland Opening
Celebrations.
The project also includes a series of
inspirational talks; a schools programme
that will enable young people to learn
about their sporting heritage through
innovate and creative lessons; training
for teachers; new sporting-themed
activity boxes for museums; and a
website with information on the history
of sport in Cornwall, and a platform
that will enable people to add their own
sporting stories, creating a new live
archive with a global reach.

Golowan
Maritime
Festival
With the cooperation of the Penzance
Harbour Master, Neil Clark, the
Golowan Maritime Festival has been
running in conjunction with the
Golowan Festival for 22 years.
It has attracted traditional craft from
all over the UK, Europe and the USA,
along with the second largest sailing
vessel in the world, the Kruzenshtern,
16th century Russian replicas and the
sail training vessels the Royalist and
Asgaard II.
Among the craft attending this year
are the replica of Cabot’s magnificent
tall ship the Matthew, the lugger
Snowdrop, Norwegian Girl and Hug
Maru from Germany.
In support of the Golowan Maritime
Festival, Simon Stone of the Blue
Anchor, Helston, once again provides
the crew supper on the quayside to
all the visiting traditional boats and
has again offered the Blue Anchor
Perpetual Trophy to be awarded to the
owner or vessel that most captures the
“Spirit of the Festival”.
Last year the trophy was presented by
Mayor Jan Ruhrmund to Jonno and
Judy Brickhill of Guide Me for their
outstanding contribution to traditional
boating.
The 100 years old Guide Me, FH 233,
is an engineless 40’ Looe lugger based
in Gweek in Cornwall. It was built in
1911 by Peter Ferris of Looe for Mr.
W Pengelly. She has an overall length
of 72’ a beam of 12’10” and draft of
5’10” and has since sailed extensively
across the oceans.
Penzance is home to a variety of
traditional boats including luggers,
gaffers, pilot gigs, ketches, crabbers
and toshers, the owners of which, look
forward to welcoming friends old and
new, to historic maritime Penzance.

Golowan needs
Friends!
We really hope you have a wonderful
Golowan. Many people put a lot of
time and effort into making this a great
community event - the biggest and best
of its kind in the south-west – and it
wouldn’t happen if it was not for two
things: firstly, the unsung heroes of
Golowan, our band of volunteers who
give their time freely. You’ll see them
around wearing their Golowan volunteer
tee-shirts. And the bigger and better
Golowan gets means we always need
more help. So if you want to help to
make Golowan 2013 happen, please get
in touch [email protected]. 01736
369686
The second thing that makes Golowan
happen is money. It costs over £80,000
every year and, in these stringent times,
it’s getting harder to make ends meet.
We need all the financial help we can
get. And you can help by becoming a
Friend Of Golowan – just for £15 a year.
