The Exec Report
The show season is over, the crops have been harvested and the
snow is falling…it is Winter in Minnesota and time for the Holiday
Season! It is time to wrap up another year’s work – time to reflect on
the successes of the past year – and time to plan for future progress.
As I write this we are preparing for the Winter Board Meeting – but
as you read this the Board will have met and made many decisions
toward the future of the Red, White & Roan.
This past Fall was very exciting for me – I had the opportunity
to travel to three of the National Shows. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you on the tanbark trail in Harrisburg, Madison and Louisville – it makes things a lot easier when I can put
a face with a name. We had four different National Champions representing our breed this
year. Read more about them in the show reports in this Journal! Congratulations to all of the
exhibitors – the quality at all of our shows was superb and we are very proud of our breeders’
accomplishments!
It is certainly a time of year to be thankful. Many of you knew and were touched by the
kindness and generosity of Jimmie D. King. Not all of you may know that the American
Milking Shorthorn Society was the single largest beneficiary of his estate. The first portion
of the funds arrived at the office in October, so the Board will be discussing how to utilize
and invest this money. Jimmie wanted it to go to promote and expand the breed, so we hope
to come up with some creative ways to do this in memory of Jimmie. We are so thankful for
his generosity that will forever touch the Red, White and Roan!
Through this Holiday Season we have much to be thankful for – the Red, White and Roan
has a bright future! I would like to wish all of you fellow Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts a
Very Merry Christmas!

International Cooperation
In July, Vince and Rozanne Ruzic, Katie Agnew, Sharon and Elizabeth Fleming and I had
the pleasure of attending the Canadian Field Day at the Oceanbrae Farm on Prince Edward
Island. Graham Madeley, former president of the English Dairy Shorthorn Society was also
in attendance.
The first evening was a time to view the sale animals, enjoy drinks and desserts, rekindle
old friendships, and make new ones. This was also the start of a small tag sale with Oceanbrae
being the host. Nine head sold with an average of $2,172.
The next morning started with viewing their animals. What a beautiful sunny day with just
a hint of a breeze to cut the blazing sun as we walked through the pastures viewing Barrett’s
animals! We had the opportunity to view several SRB B Jurist daughters and see Oceanbrae
Ironman. What a great herd of cattle; dairy capacity along with the strength that we need
for the breed to have success in the future. Next was the start of “How Well Do You Know
Animals.” Contestants had to guess the weight of one cow. Next, there were four cows and
three calves and participants attempted to determine if they could match which calf belonged
to which cow. Then there were two judging classes; a two-year-old and a four-year-old class.
U.S. people fared quite well with these challenges. Sharon Fleming guessed the weight of the
cow within one pound, and Katie Agnew and I placed the animals closest with the judge, who
is an Ayrshire breeder. Lunch was then provided by the Barrett family with about 80 people
extending our discussions and learning about each other’s dairies and the economies of their
countries.
After lunch, there was a fun auction held to make money for Junior activities. Yes, all of us
left some U.S. dollars for a good cause and came home with some useful and delicious items.
The Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society’s Distinguished Service Award was presented to
Mike Sullivan of Maple Inn Farms. The Cow of the Year Award went to Valley Crest Alice
39 EX 93 – 4E owned by Ivan and Diane Naylor. Alice was one of the cows that the Naylors
purchased when they bought Harold Patterson’s herd when he retired. For those who attended
World Dairy Expo in 2008, you may remember Alice 39, who placed fifth in her cow class
that year.
The annual meeting was opened by President John Knox. With Graham Madeley, Ryan
Barrett, and I visiting about our respective countries’ dairy industry and agriculture in general,
it seems that all of us are pretty much in the same situation. But there are also some bright

Shorthorn as a unique feature of our breed, distinguishing
it from all other breeds in the United States. To encourage
each breeder to use all the Society programs which will
benefit them individually and respect the rights of other
breeders to have a different goal and to use different
programs. To administer the Society to effectively use the
information generated by the breeders to
aggressively market our breed.

Eastern National Show
L-R: Natinoal Milking Shorthorn Queen, Liza Van der Laan: George and Mike Halpin; Grand Champion, Halpins Mona II, Allyn (Spud) Paulson on the halter; Reserve Grand
Champion Tex-Star Othello Peri with Keith Fisher on the halter; Judge Jeremy McDonald.
T
he Eastern National Milking Shorthorn show was held in conjunction
with the All-American Dairy Show
in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Judge Jeremy
McDonald of Stephens City, Virginia, was
on hand to sort through quality Milking
Shorthorns from up and down the east coast
on September 10 and 11.
A well-balanced Winter Yearling,
owned by Sarah Rhoades of Greenville,
Ohio, captured Junior Champion honors
for her enthusiastic owner. Buckeye Knoll
Plmamzing EXP-ET is no stranger to the
the winner's-circle having made her mark
as a Winter Calf. She is from the “P” family
at Buckeye Knoll, known for fancy heifers
in the show ring. Plmamzing got the nod
for Junior Champion over the well grown,
strong, powerful Fall Yearling owned by
Hard Core and Hillpoint of New Enterprise,
Pennsylvania, for her depth and openness
of rib. The Reserve Junior Champion, HCHP Red Rob Fireball-EXP-ET is an Innisfail Red Robin daughter from the Sunshine
Now You See Fireball, ‘2E90’, who was
Reserve All-American, as both a Fall Calf
and Fall Yearling.
Sorting themselves to the top of the
young cow classes were two cows hailing
from Pennsylvania. R-Generation Poker
Miley-EXP, ‘VG-88’ is owned by Jason
and Jessica Kennedy of Cochranton, Pennsylvania, and was this year's Intermediate
Champion. She is sired by Spungold-R
Frolic Poker-ET and her dam is R-Generation Rubens Magic, ‘2E90’. Following her
closely for the Reserve Intermediate Champion honor was the winning Junior ThreeYear-Old, owned by Keith and Donnette
Fisher of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania.
Springhill Moonshine Fire-EXP, ‘EX-91’,
is sired by Hardcore Othello MoonshineET. Her granddam is also Sunshine Now
You See Fireball, the dam of the Reserve
Junior Champion female.
The decision for Senior and Grand
Champion was obvious for Judge McDonald once Halpins Mona II, ‘EX-92’ hit the
ring. Mona II had the height and width
to her rear udder and open dairy rib with
plenty of dairy strength that McDonald
was looking for. She is sired by Cates PT
Tangerines Target and was named Grand
Champion at the Illinois State Fair during
the summer for her owners, Halpin Farms
of Kempton, Illinois. A show ring veteran
captured the Reserve Senior and Grand
Champion banner, Tex-Star Othello Peri,
‘EX-94’, exhibited by Todd Moore of Emory, Texas. She is sired by Kuszmar Alfairs
Othello.
Hard Core O'Royce was named Total
Performace winner for her owner Chriselle
Fisher of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania.
Keith and Donnette Fisher were awarded
both the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor
banners.

Northeastern National Show
Senior and Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn L-R: Judge Seth Johnson; Kylie Daniels; Reserve Grand Champion, Innisfail JO Lady 824, Brooke Clark on the halter; Grand
Champion, Lake Effect MD Lauren 7251, Greg Clark Jr. on the halter, Elizabeth Clark and John Anderson co-owners.
S
eth Johnson of Tunbridge, Vermont,
judged 100 head of Milking Shorthorns on Tuesday, September 17 in
West Springfield, Massachusetts, at the
Northeastern National Show.
Rising to the top of the heifer classes
for Junior Champion honors, was J-Lo-Jo
Royal Jello-EXP, the first place winter calf
exhibited by J-Lo-Jo Milking Shorthorns,
Chateaugay, New York. Johnson said, "I
made this beautifully stylish Winter Calf
Junior Champion. The longer she is out
here, the more I like her. She has the style
and balance I look for with great feet and
legs. She combines plenty of width in her
front end with a super dairy rib. She has the
advantage over the Fall Calf in Reserve, as
the Winter Calf is deeper in her heart and
fore rib. I admire straightness of lines in
the Fall Calf and her overall style." Reserve
Champion honors went to Jerbie Ruben
Hicky Hump-EXP, the first place Fall Calf
exhibited by Jerbie Farms, Downsville,
New York.
"The pair of Junior Three-Year-Olds
will be an easy choice for me today for Intermediate Champions. The winner is such
a balanced cow with a high, wide rear udder
attachment. She shows tremendous bloom
to her udder today and that, combined with
being more correct in her feet and legs, is
what sends her to the top spot today," said
Johnson. Intermediate Champion honors
went to Cold Springs GSR Lucky, owned
by Mitchel White and John Tryon of Shapleigh, Maine. Innisfail KO Lady 032, was
named Reserve Intermediate Champion for
owners Greg and Marcia Clark of Cornish
Flatt, New Hampshire.
Johnson chose maturity for his Senior
and Grand Champion cow. "This Aged
Cow is an easy Grand Champion for me
today. She is just incredibly youthful and
dairy. You really have to admire the attachments on that mammary system. This cow
is just so deep-ribbed and razor sharp today.
It gets a bit closer for Reserve Grand Champion, but I am going with the big, powerful Five-Year-Old today. She has a big
advantage over our Junior Three-Year-Old
through that front end, she is wider through
the chest and has that uphill run I admire,"
Johnson stated. Grand Champion honors
went to Lake Effect MD Lauren 7251,
owned and exhibited by John and Kirsten
Anderson and Greg and Elizabeth Clark
of Cornish Flatt, New Hampshire. Brooke
Clark of Cornish Flatt, New Hampshire,
had Reserve honors with Innisfail JO Lady
824.

T
he International Show in Madison,
Wisconsin, kicked off on Tuesday
afternoon as over 100 heifers paraded across the colored shavings before Judge
Lynn Harbaugh of Marion, Wisconsin, and
Associate Judge, Katie Bue of Alma Center, Wisconsin.
The Junior Champions were chosen
from the very large class of Fall Heifers
and the strong class of Winter Yearlings.
Both animals are Ohio owned and bred.
Praised for her style and balance, strength
from end to end and depth of rib, ToppView Moonshine Alexa was exhibited by
Topp-View Farm, Botkins, Ohio. A Moonshine daughter, she is backed by an Excellent Blue Spruce with over 23,000M. The
first place Winter Yearling, Buckeye Knoll
Plmamzing-EXP-ET, a Liriano daughter,
garnered the reserve honors for her owner
Sarah Rhoades of Greenville, Ohio.
Winner of the National Futurity No. 56
was North Stars Mega Peanut-EXP-ET. A
Megadeth daughter, she is owned by Corstar Cattle Company of Eden Valley, Minnesota. The judges praised her for her style
and balance over the second place Stubby
daughter, Halpins Isabell, exhibited by Samantha Ropp of Halpin Farms, Kempton,
Illinois.
The judges gave the nod to the first
place Junior Three-Year-Old for Intermediate Champion honors. Lands-Brook Chippewa, also the World Dairy Expo Futurity
winner, was given the advantage of length
of frame and height at the top of the rear
udder over the first-place Senior Two-YearOld, Innisfail RU Lady 072-EXP. Chippewa is a Mapleton Vly Rebel Julius-ET

daughter owned by Monica Landsgard of
Lands-Brook Farms, St. Olaf, Iowa. The
Reserve Intermedate Champion is owned
by Innisfail-Exel Shorthorns of Orland,
California. The Innisfail Red Ruben daughter took home the reserve honors over the
first-place Junior Two-Year-Old and National Futurity winner, North Stars Mega
Peanut-EXP-ET, who was named Honorable Mention.
A total of 97 cows had crossed the colored shavings prior to the Senior and Grand
Champion selections that took place on day
two of the show. Judge Harbaugh was all
smiles as he took the mike at the end of the
Aged Cow class and said, “It doesn’t matter what breed you have, what a tremendous
old cow class this is.” And shortly thereafter he tapped the first-place Aged Cow and
Total Performance Winner, Lands-Brook
Christina-EXP-ET as his champion for the
International show. “A tremendous group
of heifers and young cows, but today the
mature cows will be Grand and Reserve.
Here is a ten-year-old cow, just recently
fresh with her ninth calf. She moves freely,
and has great width and strength of attachment. Her length and openness of rib, quality balance and bloom of udder will place
her over the first-place Five-Year-Old for
champion.” The All-American Othello
daughter, and Best Udder of the show, is
owned by Jordan Landsgard of St. Olaf,
Iowa. Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand
Champion honors went to Halpins Mona
II, a Cates PT Tangerines Target daughter,
exhibited by G. Mackinson and M. Halpin
of Halpin Farms, Kempton, Illinois.
The Sportsman Trophy went to Rich-

ard Lattire of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The
Stuart and Emily Rowe's Innisfail Herd
again garnered the Premier Breeder of the
Cow Show award while Halpin Farms of
Kempton, Illinois, was named Premier Exhibitor of the show. Premier Sire was Innisfail Red Ruben. Premier Breeder and
Exhibitor of the Heifer show honors went
to Lazy M Farm of Stitzer, Wisconsin.

Junior Show
The Winter National Milking Shorthorn Junior Show was held Friday, November 8, in Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. Judge Danny Huddleston of Alba,
Texas, had the privilege of sorting through
top animals exhibited by Milking Shorthorn
juniors.
The night was full of top exhibitors
that showed off their showmanship skills
throughout the show. The Junior Showmanship winner was Rachel Hefel of Epworth, Iowa. Hannah Rhoades took home
Intermediate Showmanship honors. The
top senior showman was Samantha Ropp of
Kempton, Illinois.
The Junior Champion of the show is
no stranger to the spotlight. Buckeye Knoll
Plmamzing EXP-ET has won her class at
two other National Junior Shows and received Junior Champion rosettes as well.
This Liriano daughter is a full sister to
Buckeye Knoll Pelia who made her rounds
on the show circuit in previous years.
Plmamzing is owned by Sarah Rhoades of
Greenville, Ohio. Capturing Reserve Junior
Champion for owner Andrew Rice was
Halpins Montana, the winning Summer
Yearling. She is sired by Cold Spring RU
Parker EXP ET.
The Intermediate and Reserve Grand
Champion was a tall, very dairy young cow
with a high and wide rear udder attachment.
Purple Idalee RR Zieva Exp-ET, owned by
Taylor Graves of Parksville, Kentucky,
hails from the ‘Zena’ family. The winning
Fall Yearling in Milk, Valley View Rylie
1803 EXP, was named Reserve Intermediate Champion. She is sired by Mysha-Wo
Robin Nitro EXP and is owned by Jessica
Crawley of Gravette, Arkansas.
Senior and Grand Champion honors were awarded to Sageser Clay Penny
owned by Morgan Sageser of Shelbyville,
Kentucky. This deep-bodied, well-balanced
cow is sired by Bar-D-Kuszmar Clay and
was most recently named Reserve Junior
All-American in 2012. Reserve Senior
Champion honors were won by Valley
View Mon Honey 1149, the winning Aged
Cow for Brittany Crawley, Gravette, Arkansas.

spots that we share in common. Each country
has welcomed several new breeders into
their societies. Mostly these are people who
have others breeds and start with a couple of
Milking Shorthorn. We need to press forward
and keep these people interested in increasing their holdings of Milking Shorthorn and
Dairy Shorthorn cattle. In addition, this was
the best year in several years for numbers of
registrations for each organization.
Dave Prinzen from Prinzville Dairy is the
new president and the new vice president is
Don Richardson of Richford Farm.
Interesting and enthusiastic discussions
were had on several items where cooperative
efforts will prove beneficial to each organization. One important area is in the identification, selection and proving of young sires.
We need to share pedigrees and get as much
semen used as quickly as possible. Canadian
and English breeders have in the past and
continue to use several U.S. bred bulls and we
need to expand this international exchange
of genetics which will be beneficial to all.
Many U.S. breeders are using Oceanbrae
Ironman whom we saw along with several
calves sired by him. If you are looking for a
polled bull, this might be a good choice as
the calves are long bodied and dairy.

Through Another's Eyes......
Geoff Cochrane, Federal President
Illawarra Cattle Society of Australia.
USA Trip September 2013.
athie and I arrived in Harrisburg 36
hours after leaving Sydney, Australia, counting time spent waiting at
Los Angeles and Atlanta airports. I'm not
a good air traveller and had had enough of
it after a few hours. My bag turned up at
our hotel after it had a 24-hour holiday in
Hawaii without taking me with it!
After picking up our rental car, we headed to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and were
amazed to see the Amish people bailing hay
with horses.
Some of the first things I noticed were no
Gum Trees, no Bullbars or backyard fences.
We arrived at the Golden Jubilee AllAmerican Show as the Shorthorn and Ayrshire junior shows were on the first class.
We sat up in the grandstand and felt a bit
like fish out of water not knowing anyone
and everybody else seeming to be very
busy showing cattle or running the show.
We were blown away by the size of the
complex only to realize over the next few
days how big it really was as we found the
equine arena, sale ring, cow barns and everything else.
I thought the Junior Champion of the
Milking Shorthorn junior show was an outstanding animal and, as we watched the supreme champions judged by all seven breed
judges in the equine arena, I thought the
beautiful roan heifer, Buckeye Knoll Plm
mazing EXP-ET had an excellent chance.
The Red and White won and we were very
pleased to hear that the roan had come second beating the Holstein, Jersey and all others. We learned this from one of the judges
who joined us for breakfast the next morning at the hotel. He had sat alone at the table
next to us so we asked him to join us. We
were very pleased to pass this information
on to her owners who were also pleased
and excited to hear this. By this time we
had made ourselves known to Cory Salzl
and Jason and Melinda Heeter who introduced us to many of the other breeders, including John and Marjorie Kuszlyk, whose
farm we were unable to visit, but at least
we saw some of their cows at the show. I
counted up to 18 entries in the open show
and was very impressed to see every animal
prepared and presented to a very high level. Again the beautiful roan heifer was an
easy winner in my mind. Congratulations
to Doug Rhodes and his daughters, Hannah
and Sarah, who expressed an interest in the
exchange to Australia in a few years. And
the delightful show Princess, whose name I
have forgotten- sorry!
As we walked around the barns looking
C

Milking Shorthorn Journal
at cows and meeting people before the allbreeds sale of 79 head, I noticed a lovely
red cow which took my eye. She was a
little small and, although not fully bagged
up at that time, showed an excellent udder,
strong top line, excellent body capacity and
dairyness. Sure enough, Halpins Mona II
was made champion the next day.
It was very pleasing to see the Shorthorns’
average price right up with the top prices,
even if there was only a small number. It
was obvious the Milking Shorthorn breeders only put their best in the sale.
We met an interesting character, Darwin
Braundt, who was involved in the dairy
oxen competitions and display. It was interesting for me, especially, because I have
a team of bullocks, as we call them back at
home, and our team has ten, not 2, animals.
The next day for the in-milk classes, we
sat with Joelle Koller. We followed the
judging and talked cows until near the
champion cow class, when we went down
out of the stand and she introduced us to
her mother, Nedra Koller, who had hosted
a young “exchangee” years ago from Australia. In fact, Cathie had taught him at the
local high school around 1976. She also introduced us to her grandfather, Sam Yoder,
one of the great identities of the show.
I then moved amongst the exhibitors and
cows waiting to go into the group classes,
taking photos and meeting people like Mike
Halpin with his champion cow. Naturally,
he was very busy and wanted to get his
cows milked as would any good cow man.
We stayed an extra half day in Harrisburg
for the open show. Our original itinerary
had not stated that the open show was on
the next morning.
That same afternoon we travelled to Niagara Falls, which is the most amazing natural landform I have ever seen and I have
travelled much. Coming from the driest
continent on earth, I could only describe it
as an ocean pouring into a valley.
The next afternoon we travelled into the
center of Toronto to visit friends whom we
had not seen for 17 years, then on to a little
town called Brussels to stay overnight with
a friend I had meet on a droving trip down
the Birdsville Track in Australia eleven
years ago. We only stayed with him 23
hours, since time was at a premium.
Our next stop was to visit Tim Shearer
and his wife, Irene. We stayed a few hours
and were very pleased to hear from them
that the Australian bull Glenbrook Storm
Ruler had done such a good job for them.
It was very pleasing to hear they had won
an award for the highest production cow in
their province over all breeds. This sort of
success is something that should be shared
Holiday 2013
with all Shorthorn breeders all over the
world. Maybe we should give a membership to every breed organization with which
we have reciprocal rights. In that way the
secretaries could convey this sort of success
to the groups’ members.
Tim and Irene then took us to see their
heifers at another farm. They were being
prepared for their next big local show. Here
we saw "snake rail fences" - this sort of rural history always interests me.
After a very long drive, we found Joan
and Craig Wortman’s place at 8:30 p.m.
up in the hills thanks to Cathie's excellent
navigating and my good driving on the other side of the road. (I had been practising
before I left home) Their daughter, Kylie
Preisinger was staying with them. She had
visited our farms in June and met two of
our sons and their wives when Cathie and
I were away up in the Queensland Outback
doing voluntary work on remote cattle stations. The next morning Joan showed us
through their herd of mainly roans, grazing on a beautiful creek flat. Then on to the
Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where we found our
hotel right next to the fairgrounds. We went
straight to watch the youth show. This had
a completely different feel, as we already
knew some people as opposed to Harrisburg where we went in cold and took a
while to fit in. Even before Joan arrived,
I was talking to a man sitting near me in
the stand, Doug Wearing, who was proud
to tell me he was part-owner of one of the
animals that was doing well. Joan and I sat
and discussed the judging and I got to meet
and talk to a lot of people. That night, at
an informal gathering of exhibitors, Kylie
introduced us and people seemed very comfortable coming forward to talk to us both
there. As we walked around the barn, my
eyes soon locked onto a cow that amazed
me. I looked around to see a man sitting in
a chair watching me. I said, " Do you own
this cow?" "Yes.” “I did not expect to see a
cow that good here." Then he replied, "You
wait till you see her legs out walking." Lake
Effect MD Lauren 7215 had the conformation, dairy quality, udder and capacity that
fills my eye. We are not so critical of slightly sickle legs or too straight, for that matter,
probably because our cows are not housed
on concrete; they are out on pasture all year
round. Sure enough, she easily won champion the next day. The reserve, Innisfail Jo
Lady 824 from the same team, was a complete contrast in conformation and would
not do well in our shows, but I understand
that our dairying conditions are so different from yours that it is not surprising that
you may like a different type. John Wayne
Anderson came over and told us his story
of breeding the champion. Stuart and Emily
Rowe have visited our farm several times,
so John Wayne and I had a lot to talk about.
It was very pleasing for me to watch as
the only two animals out of 100 that were
by Australian bulls were both champions,
the junior and the intermediate, although I
was surprised to see the latter win in that
company. At Harrisburg, there were no animals by Australian bulls. In the afternoon,
we watched the ox pulling for some time.
It is of interest to me as I have a team of
ten in my retirement from actively milking
the cows.
We found Sheila Phelon's place in the
dark. The next morning, her son Jim showed
us around their farm and their milking cows
and heifers. To my surprise some of their
(native) heifers were mostly white with
white hooves; I thought you could only get
that with an outcross. We were unable to
find their dry cows running out in the bush,
which I thought could only happen in Australia! Jim then took us to Ben Bemis' place
where we saw one of the in-milk class winners, Garys Liriano Sasparilla EXP, and a
nice red (native) heifer that had got second
in her class.
We drove to Echo Farm of the Hodge family in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, where we
had a bit of a look around before supper.
This was the first farm I had been on where
all the fodder is bought in, so different to
our way of doing things. The next morning
Beth showed us around the cows and the
pudding factory and value-adding business
enterprise which was very interesting and
showed a lot of initiative. In the afternoon,
we travelled to Greg and Marcia Clarke’s
farm at Cornish Flat, New Hampshire,
another very intensive operation on five
acres. Before I got out of the car, I spotted
the champion eating silage in the herd and
looking just as good as she did at the show.
I believe this cow could win at International
Dairy Week here in Australia, which is the
biggest dairy show in the southern hemisphere, so there is a challenge for Greg
and his family. Realistically, the best way
to that is to compete in the All-World Red
Cow Photographic Competition, which
was my idea originally and thankfully was
progressed by other, more talented people.
Greg let me put the cups on Lauren, which
really "made my day." As we left, Greg and
Marcia directed us to see the large covered
bridge, which was most interesting. Before this, we had only seen small ones and
thought that over a creek was a funny place
to build a shed. We have shown our pictures of these bridges to many people here
at home and nobody can guess why a bridge
would have a roof over it . Our hardwood
does not need to be covered.
We headed back to Echo Farm for the
night, then, the next day, made the long trip
back to Harrisburg for our trip home.
On reflection now at home, I feel your
Milking Shorthorns are more like our Illawarras than ever. My first introduction to
your cattle was in the early 70's when Keith
King, Jessie Arthur and others visited our
farm in Kangaroo Valley and sent me your
journals. Your cows are much more refined
now and ours have changed a lot too. Since
the introduction of outside bloodlines,
mainly Red Holstein with limited Scandanavian, our cattle produce far more consistently and persistently, but we have lost
a lot in things like pigmentation, which is
so important in our sunburnt country. We
never had problems with eye cancers with
pure Illawarras but we sure are now. Our
protein test is not what it was, nor the temperament. Our fertility has gone down like
the Titanic, but some of that could be attributed to pushing more milk with protein
feeds and fertilizers these days.
Your organization has done a far better
job of keeping control of outside genetics
than ours. We are now trying to "shut the
gate after the horse has bolted." Nearly all
the cattle at your shows display very good
breed character. An experienced cattle man
would have trouble recognizing what breed
some of the cattle at our shows are and that
distresses me. I also feel it is good you identify your (native) cattle. We should do the
same for what is left of our pure Illawarras
and by that I mean 100% only, not +75% or
+87.5%. I feel the day may come when we
may need these unique blood lines when we
see how the intense use of artificial insemi-
nation over many years has made all breeds
around the world very closely bred with everybody wanting to use the same bulls.
The All-World Red Cow Photographic
Competition and the Youth Exchange Program are examples of how all Shorthorn
aligned breeds can cooperate. There could
be many more. Maybe we should give a
membership to each breed society with
which we have reciprocal rights. In that
way we could each publish all the positive results that we each is achieving which
would be a great encouragement to all. The
exchange of semen and embryos is increasing and that trend will only increase.
Two years ago, Cathie and I visited the
United Kingdom and visited a few Shorthorn herds. I was simply amazed to see
Graeme and Shirley Madeley's herd when
we stayed several days with his family. I
have never photographed so many good
cows in one herd as I did at Graeme's. My
appreciation of the Shorthorn cows has lifted enormously when I have visited both the
U.S. and the U.K. and we all have so much
to offer each other.
Years ago, I used to get ridiculed by
other breeders for sticking with Illawarras.
That does not happen today as those people
have watched my family go from producing
400,000 litres a year to 8,000,000 litres this
year – a 20-fold increase in one generation.
Greg let me put the cups on Lauren, which really "made my day."

Junior Spotlights
The National Junior Milking Shorthorn Reporter is Nicholas Achen. He is a
freshman at Warner High School. He is a
14-year-old with a passion for the dairy
industry, but mostly for the Milking Shorthorn industry. Nicholas is involved in 4-H
(Secretary), FFA, the Brown Swiss Association, and National Holstein Associations.
He was introduced to the Milking Shorthorn breed by his older siblings: Jessica,
Jacob, and Roxann Achen. He also inherited the ability to show this breed, from his
mother and Uncle Jeff. Nicholas also exhibits at the local fairs and national shows.
Nicholas’ most memorable time with his
Shorthorns was when he was on the colored
shavings last year at the World Dairy Expo.
He was second place in the open show with
Cherrywood Pat Katherine-EXP.
On the farm Nicholas is in charge of
feeding the show animals, and feeding
grain to the calves of Warner Dairy. In his
28
Milking Shorthorn Journal
free time after chores he loves to lead the
show animals.
Nicholas's future plans are to attend Purdue University in Indiana, The University
of Minnesota, or South Dakota University
(Jackrabbits). He wants to major in agribusiness. He hopes to someday manage and
showcase his family's show animals.
The Milking Shorthorn breed is special
to Nicholas, because he likes the friendly
community it has. Nicholas also feels this
breed is special, because it is the best association to be a part of. Nicholas Achen is
also the writer of the Junior Spotlights.
Michael Pederson, is the 16-year-old son
of Brian and Trisha Pederson. He is the
outstanding Milking Shorthorn Junior for
this winter season. Michael was introduced
into this wonderful breed by his parents.
He started showing back when he was fiveyears-old. He became involved with the
breed when his mother signed him up for
the local county fair. Michael developed his
passion for the breed and now is showing
from local shows to the International Milking Shorthorn Show in Madison Wisconsin.
Besides showing Michael is involved in
high school golf, FFA, 4-H, and shooting
sports.
His most memorable Milking Shorthorn
experience is when his favorite Shorthorn
Holiday 2013
“Penny” was in heat. The story goes a little
like this: at the county fair Penny was in
heat. So they had to tie her up to a gate outside the show ring, just to get the judge to
look at her!
The other responsibilities that Michael
does on the farm are feeding the calves
starter, milk, and water. Then he feeds his
yearlings their grain. He also is in charge of
feeding his pigs for the fair.
Michael’s future plans involve taking
over the NorthStar Family Farm from his
parents.
Milking Shorthorn are really special
to him, because when he first saw one, he
knew there was a spark for fun. Michael attended the fall sales in Minnesota. He got a
buyer's number and started a new 4-H project. Her name was Princess, and when she
had her first calf he named it “Precious”,
because the calf was his first Milking Shorthorn that he bred and owned.
Innisfail Legends of the Fall Sale
Stuart and Emily Rowe of Orland,
California created an event worthy of the

WFA Cattle Sales complex in Brooklyn.
The 46 lots averaged $2,810 with a sale
