A unique, mysterious, memorable island . An island the volcanic lava marked for ever, from the formation of the landscape to the outstanding products of the land. The result of lava is the one of the kind Kaldera –a place unique in the world- the beautifully shaped rocks at the coastline of Vlyhada, the unique beauty of Skaros etc. The lava revealed petrified leaves of olive trees, trapped in its core for 50 or 60 thousand years and changed the common scientific belief, proving that the olive tree grew in the Aegean area much earlier than the scientists believed until then. The distinctive taste and aromas of Santorini products are the result of the volcanic lava, the reflection of the sun and the Aegean winds. Small size tomatoes with a wonderful smell, fava with velvety texture in your mouth, wines that trap the senses and a sweet, divine Vinsanto that sends you to paradise. The colors, the beautiful smells, the intense light, the music of the sea waves and the winds compose a unique experience for the visitor. With this little information we welcome you to Santorini, we welcome you to Greece, a magical place now, in spring and a gift for the senses. The experience will continue even more powerfully with the summer issue of Elegant Greece dedicated to the island of Mykonos. The island of rich and famous, the island of the Mykonian Anna Veltsos, the woman that brought to the island Aristotelis Onassis and princess Soraya in the ’60s and ’70s and then the designer Gianfranco Ferre and many other famous people, giving the true definition of “real glamour” to Mykonos. We will also travel you to the myths of Mykonos, where Aeolos released the winds trapped in his sacs (thats why Mykonos is called the island of the winds) and also will reveal the secrets of the three wells. The summer issue of Elegant Greece will travel you to a Mykonos that no other guide has ever shown. We wish to all our visitors to have a wonderful experience in the beautiful springtime Greece and never forget that life is a travel and the travel in Greece and its islands is a travel of a lifetime, because Greece is “the place to be” and happiness is the place. IN EASTERN ORTHODOX CHURCH, IT’S CALLED EPITAPHIOS AND THE FESTIVE FAREWELL IS DEDICATED TO JESUS CHRIST Epitaphios It’s the Good Friday evening and everybody is making preparations for the official ritualistic mourning of the year. You can smell the coming of spring in the towns and the villages along with the aroma of the fresh whitewash on the walls. The churches are getting dressed in black and purple. The middle of every temple would be the host for the curved wood canopy of the dead adorned with hundreds of flowers. It’s the Epitaphios - as it is called in the eastern Orthodox Church – the death bed of Jesus Christ, the leader of the Christian church. Later on, when the fragrant night will have fallen, men and women will carry the Epitaphios on their shoulders out of the church and will take it out in the streets, through the small pathways and the squares of the city, spreading its blessing everywhere. There is a huge following of believers, tenths, hundreds, sometimes thousands of people in a march, holding light candles like a chorus of an ancient tragedy, singing hymns which are dated back to the ancient singings of Eleusinian Mysteries. It’s Eleusinian Mysteries TEXT YIANNIS FOSKOLOS INSTAGRAM PHOTOS VANGELIS KYRIS 52 53 TRADITION // TRADITION // the Good Friday evening and in Greece, the land of myths and tragedies, the ritual for the death of Jesus has a theatrical aspect according to its history. In every church and chapel from the smallest island to the biggest city, the following and the procession Epitaphios has a long history going back thousands of years. This night, the ancient world of Homer, the tragic poets’ and the orphic hymns meets Byzantium, the folk songs and the contemporary folklore tradition. Margaret Alexiou, one of the lead British scholars of Greek folklore and professor at Harvard university, finds traces of orphic poetry in Good Friday chants and this is not accidental. In the most known psalm which is being sang in the Epitaphios procession, “O Glyki Mou Ear“ [O My Sweet Spring], the esteemed Hellenist discovers the ancient beauty. Other scholars suggest that the psalm is a variation of ancient hymns to Persephone and demeter. “Even if mourning dis- the passion of Christ and his resurrection, in Corfu, choirs and philharmonic orchestras fill the island with moments of devoutness. In many areas believers set up fires and burn Judas, the apostle that betrayed Jesus. The parish girls decorate the Epitaphios early in the morning with violets, roses, lemon blossoms and many spring flowers. They make blossom crowns and garlands, singing the lament of Virgin Mary, a significant Christian song with many things in common with texts from Byzantium but also with the ancient tragedies of Euripides, Aeschylus and Lycophron. The funeral bells are echoing throughout Greece. And when the night falls, everyone walks behind the Epitaphios with a lighted candle in his hand. Margaret Alexiou "O Glyki Mou Ear" Persephone (Demeter) M. Alexiou epitaphios in Athens [around 21:00] One of the most picturesque processions of Epitaphios in the city center Kydathinaion is that of St. Sotiros Church at Plaka, which begins from THE PARISH GIRLS DECORATE THE EPITAPHIOS EARLY IN THE MORNING WITH VIOLETS, ROSES, LEMON BLOSSOMS AND MANY SPRING FLOWERS. appears from western civilizations, it will still survive in different cultures such as the Greek and the Irish,” says, M. Alexiou, author of the book “The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition”. It is there we realize that the death journey was and has still been part of a whole ritual in Greece. From Homer, Greek tragedies, Plato, the Mycenaean shrines till the Byzantium, Christianity, old folk songs, the laments of Mani, Crete and other Greek areas , mourning has been -each time with different supernatural and symbolic aspects- a customary moral obligation to the dead. This environment with the three-thousand-year a history has come to embellish the recent folk tradition. In relation to the ritual lament of crucifixion and death of Christ, many customs in different areas of this country have flourished. In Hydra and Tinos, the Epitaphios goes under the sea during their procession, in Nafpaktos they kindle torches up in the Castle that surrounds the port, in Marpissa of Paros, locals reenact with special costumes Kydathinaion Str. and goes around the narrow streets of the scenic district. In the alleys of Plaka, where the procession of the St.Aikaterinis’s Epitathios takes place, the scenery brings to mind of a Cycladic island. In the same district the Epitaphios from Metohi of the Holy Sepulchre [St. Anarghiri] “wanders” as well. The most glorious Epitaphios is that of Metropolis (in Mitropoleos street) with a contingent of military representatives, politicians and crowds of people. In Kaisariani Abbey the procession of Epitaphios takes place during the day, at around 14:00, in the slopes of Hymettus through the blooming nature. Tip In the Good Friday evening if you climb the Lycabettus cliff you will have the chance to watch the different litanies of the city from above. There are sparkling rivers of believers holding candles and the view is spectacular. 54 Kydathinaion St.Aikaterinis Nafpaktos Cycladic Marpissa Corfu Metropolis Kaisariani Aeschylus Euripides Lycophron 55 INTERVIEW // Paul Evmorfidis THE VISIONER A BUSINESSMAN WITH LYRICAL, CHARMING SPEECH, A VISIONARY MAN, AN ENTHUSIAST OF WELL-BEING THAT COMES WITH A CONNECTION WITH NATURE. Would you like to tell me which ones? The tapestries, the representations, the statues with the sculpt bodies and the perfect curves. I find it difficult to believe that these bodies would choose the mattresses with the hard, mechanical springs to rest on, they would reject the synthetic, shiny fabrics. Wool, cotton, algae, linen, aromatic plants and leaves. That’s what remains if you forget what you’ve learned from modern civilization of excess. How do you perceive the term success? What does a successful business course involve? At the end of the journey to have remain more of a child than in the beginning Is success synonymous of happiness? Happiness is a precondition for success Are you bothered by the word success? Do you work on it? I play a football game with it, without counting the score. Anyway, when I score, I celebrate it accordingly, regardless of the silence of success. do you think it makes fun of me? Which of your daily activities makes you happy? The pushups. INTERVIEW // Noon, high noon with an August south wind and temperature over 35 degrees C. A cave full of seaweed, so much that invites you to frolic, for jumps, naps and dreams. The huge mattress that the seaweed forms is twice as big as that for the pole vault and him, a dedicated athlete, is doing somersaults, jumping, showing himself in front of his friends. Lots of sweat, deep breaths and almost the whole of his body is covered with half a meter long seaweed. Exhausted by moving up and down or here and there, he sleeps. Suddenly a big swell breaks and lifts him up in the sky. Confused he doesn’t feel any body weight and from above he watches the pretentious, the frills. Free, naked, he grasps the whispers of the winds, the noises of the big cities, travelling till the end of the world. And as time goes by, the South wind rises and the mattress takes him further away. Now he sees America, then China, Saudi Arabia. He’s flying all over Europe. He saw everything, cities, villages, mountains, rivers, oceans and plains. Soaking in sweat he wakes up. He’s stricken by the sun. Apnea and silence. The deep blue of the sea will offer him its dew. Mani’s sea, clean, immaculate, virgin. The delphic Sibyl wasn’t necessary for him to explain his dream. He wanted to take back home this joy of freedom, SUCCESS MEANS TO ME THAT AT THE END OF THE JOURNEY TO HAVE REMAIN MORE OF A CHILD THAN IN THE BEGINNING You have said in the past that the advice that characterized your whole life is “listen to thousand opinions but always do what’s in your head”. Would it be something that you would advise your four children? My first born already does it, my other kids are in a phase of refining. Tell me a little about “Pavlos” the new project of CoCoMAT, the wooden bicycle and your personal dote on bicycles. Few words for me: I’m not a saint. The wooden bicycle expresses my return to my childhood, my desire to grow up and ride it. I always wanted a bicycle without the fear of breaking down or rusting, without any wires, just to go and go and never stop going. “Made in Greece” has travelled the whole world because of you. Give me the extension of this interplanetary trip. If you wait to learn from t his book something you don’t know, you’d better not read it. It deals with the simple that has become outlandish, the obvious that has become heroic, with those who denied their heritage and lost in the kingdom of the pretentious. this Aegean aura. Like a modern craftsman he made his first mattress with seaweed, cotton, canvas, an enormous desire and endless love. Many more have followed for neighbors, relatives, strangers, clients, Greeks, Germans, and Americans. For everyone who believes in the freedom of the sea and shares its joys. For everyone who sees the world from above only in their dreams the world is a reason for dreaming. Your have reached the fourteen stores in China. Do you have any particular plans for this huge and rising market? My only plan is not to have any plans. With 90 million dollars income per year, more than 200 employees and shops from NY to Seoul, the dream seems a reality. I’m certain that you have an even crazier dream in your mind. Do you want to share it with us? Oak trees everywhere, moving on wheels and roller skates. Oak breaths and tricks between people and buildings, aeroplanes, cars and luxurious ships. This is a dream of a kind. Trees that climb tireless through hills and roll silently through the whole world. 58 59 THE MIRACLE OF EARTH // SANTORINI A STUNNING ISLAND IN 2011 BBC PRAISED SANTORINI AS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND IN THE WORLD. The black lava that is transformed into modern art sculptures and illuminates the sunlight more brightly than anywhere else in the world. The volcanic center of Santorini appeared 13 million years ago and the volcanic activity started 1.5 million ago. Its eruption created one of the biggest seismic waves that the planet has ever experienced. Ashes of the volcano were discovered in Crete, in southwest Asia Minor, in Sinai desert, in Nile delta and up to the frost of Greenland. The tsunami that this explosion generated reached to a height of 15-30 meters and caused major disasters in Crete. The whole Aegean was shaken. The eruptions in Santorini continued till the 1950s. The volcano [Kolumbo] which is situated 5 km northwest of the city of Santorini – still gushes hot water and there are also gases and traces of dissolved minerals. Kolumbo has a height of 470 meters and goes down 17 meters below the sea level. The nearby volcano underneath Caldera is much calmer. However, there are continuous vibrations noted down by scientists and seismologists from around the world. The greatest depth of Caldera is 500 meters. It’s the biggest caldera in the world [300 meters in height and 11 km in diameter]. THE MIRACLE OF EARTH // Kolumbo THE GREATEST DEPTH OF CALDERA IS 500 METERS. The largest village of Santorini is Emporio with medieval scenery, narrow streets, vertical steps, balconies, chambers, domes and “bridges” that connect the houses. Imerovigli is considered one of the best summer destinations in Greece. The wandering in the Venetian castle of Skaros –with the amazing view- seems like a swing between time and space. At Kamari there are seaside ruins of ancient constructions. Megalochori is one of the most traditional places in Santorini with neoclassical houses and vaulted or caved buildings. The remains of an old castle at the edge of Caldera denote the inside of an old mill. abruptly in the 17th century B.C. as a result of numerous and strong earthquakes. The volcanic eruption that followed destroyed the city completely in 1650 B.C. Akrotiri is considered to be the “Greek Pompeii” – although in chronological terms it happened first. The Minoan town has stayed buried under the volcanic ashes until the 19th century – nearly for 60 centuries. It had an excellent city planning, sewer network [the most ancient type of toilet bowl can be found here], multi-storey buildings with rich furnishings and household items. The citizens of Santorini had also developed highly pyrotechnology. There were permanent or portable cooking hobs, portable or fixed ovens, kettle, pans, etc. Fire was necessary for painting fabrics and yarns. There were also discovered cells for the production of porfyra, the distinctive purple color .Furthermore, there THE VOLCANIC ERUPTION DESTROYED THE CITY COMPLETELY IN 1650 B.C. AKROTIRI IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE “GREEK POMPEII” Oia is famous for the most photographed sunset in the world whereas from the village of Pyrgos the visitor can have a panoramic view of Thira. during the Easter a must see is the procession of Epitaphios along the narrow streets of the village. It is taken place on Good Friday night and the sight is spectacular as all the villagers walk in a mystic litany under the light of burning torches. The glorious culture of Akrotiri At Akrotiri, the main attraction is the Minoan city which was discovered buried in the area. At the beginning it was a small Neolithic seaside village. during the middle of the 5th millennium BC the town was founded and became one of the most important centers of the Aegean in prehistoric times. Around 20th and 17th Century B.C. the settlement [of 5.000-6.000 inhabitants] expanded and became one of the most important ports on the Aegean. The life in the city ended were found 50 different specimens of yarn in the buried ruins of a house [in a place that might have been a kitchen] that certify that fabrics from sheep wood were made in Santorini from the Bronze Age [3000-1100 B.C.] This is one of the oldest testimonies of usage of wool in the world and the oldest in the Aegean. Tomato, fava and red wine due to the volcanic soil, Santorini’s products have a special and unique taste and aromas that make them distinguishing. Santorini is famous for its wine, the tomato pasta and the small local tomatoes [which are also been made into a preserve], its fava [with a designation of origin], its capers and the delicious white eggplants. Nobody should leave the village without taking along the sweet Vinsanto wine, vinegar, tomato paste, small tomato preserve, sun dried tomatoes and fava as the best reminder of Santorini. 64 Chora Skaros Kamari Megalochori Oia Pyrgos Thira 1650 Akrotiri Akrotiri Akrotiri Akrotiri 65 INTERVIEW // Valeria Golino GREEK BEAUTY AWARDED 32 TIMES AND NOMINATED 31 TIMES, VALERIA GOLINO AT 48 IS A MULTITALENTED ACTRESS WITH MANY ACTING LAYERS AND FACES. Architecture must follow these qualities and integrate, focusing on possible minimum optical and environmental footprint. The cave-houses buildings, that recently were legislated, help towards this target. Moreover, the acquisition of residence permit for those who buy real estate over 250.000€ in Greece, could be a strong reason for the development of the sector. The expected -and given- growth for real estate –especially holiday houses- in Greece happens not only due to the formalized privileges, but also due to the competitive relation price to product. In any case, we owe to guarantee the best possible quality of the product, in order to guarantee the sustainability of the service/product of holiday housing. 92 HOLIDAY HOUSING IN GREECE COULD BE A PIONEER SECTOR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMY, IN NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND PRIVATE LEVEL 93 ART // ART // Yiannis Tsarouhis (The forgotten garrison, 1956) «Greek art does not only have a glorious past but also a strong present.
