Local Resident Wins Cadillac
Longtime Cheer Coaches Retire
El Sereno resident Agapita “Petie” LobdellI was invited by her friend Minnie to
Laughlin on a bus trip the El Sereno Senior Center planned for May 1st, 2nd &
3rd. On the third day “Petie” won herself a brand new Cadillac at the Colorado
Belle and gave credit to her friend Minnie for being her good luck charm. Said
Petie, “First she invited me to go on the trip, secondly, she wanted to have dinner at
the Colorado Belle” where a few years earlier, one of the ladies who had gone on
a previous trip with the El Sereno Senior Center had won a car at the Penny Slots at
the Edge Water Casino.
Their retirement from coaching
Cheerleading at Wilson H.S. has
marked the end of an era for Laura
Juarez-Williams
and
Gustavo
Rodriguez. After coaching together for
the last 23 years, Laura and Gustavo
“Gus” have decided to retire from
Wilson H.S. Cheer Squad. They began
coaching together at El Sereno J.H.S. in
1988. Mrs. Juarez-Williams had been
coaching and choreographing for 11
years, when Gus began, as a volunteer to coach and choreograph for the El Sereno
J.H.S. Cheerleaders. Together, they formed the “L.A. Spirit Cheer Squad,” which was
one of the first “all-star” cheer teams in El Sereno. Later, in 1993, they moved to
Wilson H.S. and coached two L.A Spirit teams and Wilson H.S. concurrently for
two years. The name of L.A. Spirit was changed to L.A.’s Pride Cheer squad as the
team was handed over to assistant coach, Takia Fox. Takia Fox later changed the
name to Pride All-Stars, which is now coached by Sarah Fong. Many of their former
cheerleaders have moved on to coach their own teams.
On May 3rd, Petie and Minnie went to eat breakfast at the Colorado Belle. After
breakfast Minnie asked Petie what she wanted to do. She said kidding, “You know
I want to win the Cadillac!”, so they proceeded to play. A few minutes later the
machine started to make a lot of noise and Petie noticed that she might have won a
jackpot, but did not know how big. The slots supervisor indeed confirmed that Petie
had really won the car. Congratulations and enjoy the Cadillac Petie.
Summer Day Camp at El Sereno Park
The last day of school for LAUSD is Friday, June 24th, which means Summer Day
Camp is upon us once again at El Sereno Recreation Center. Registration begins
June 1st. and has a one-time fee of $20. The first weekly camp session begins
Monday, June 27th and continues through Friday, August 26th. Weekly Camp fee
is $70 with camp running daily Monday-Friday 9am-4pm. Extended Care is
available for an additional $15 per week. Extended Care is from 7:30am-9am &
4pm-6pm. Summer lunch program is provided to campers which includes a snack.
Trips are not included in the price of camp. Field trips are not mandatory but there is
no camp on field trip days. You can check the camp calendar at the time of
registering for a list of field trip locations, field trip dates and fees scheduled for
2011. A camp shirt is provided for trip days and the park has a strict rule of “no shirt
no trip” that is enforced for your child’s safety. Activities on this year’s calendar are
music, art, games, sports, hikes, cooking, swimming, crafts and nature walks. I’ve
done comparisons when it comes to child care during the summer months and most
family day cares charge a minimum of $100 and other day camps at other
organizations or establishments run more than $150 week and often do not include
the types of activities (especially swimming) that are provided for at El Sereno
Recreation Center. The chance from my son to explore major city attractions is also a
great way to exposure him to culture and create wonderful childhood memories. As
a working mom it is important how my son spends his time when I’m not available
for him. He has attended each year since first grade and every time he looks
forward to all the “cool” things he’ll get to do at El Sereno Park. His favorite is still
from the year that the camp performed Grease. For more information call (323)
225.3517. Cardio Kickboxing classes are being held for participants 15 years or
older at El Sereno Recreation Center on Mondays & Fridays 8p-9p. Monthly fee is
$25.00

The legacy of the Wilson H.S. Cheer Squad has been a long and successful one.
and the Team motto of, “Discipline, Determination and Dedication” has been the key
to it’s success. Wilson High School Cheer Squad is a nationally ranked team and
has been since the late ’90’s. Both Laura and Gustavo were named the first
California State “Coaches of the Year” in 1999. This was awarded by the Golden
State Spirit Association, an association of Cheer Coaches in the Western United
States. The pair has been named in the “Who’s Who” of American High School
Cheerleading Coaches, from 1999 until the present.
Many Wilson H.S. Alumni have assisted in Coaching Wilson H.S. throughout the
years. Jennifer Marez has coached for a total of five years and she too, will be
retiring. Gustavo Rodriguez will continue his teaching career at Wilson H.S. and
plans on adopting a child. Laura Juarez-Williams will continue teaching at Wilson
H.S. until she retires in a few years and looks forward to spending more time with
her family and visiting her grandchildren in Pennsylvania. Tumbling coach, Michael
Serrano is coaching at Victory Cheer in Pasadena. Taking the reins of the Wilson
H.S. Cheer Squad is Krystle Corral and will be assisted by her brother, Robby
Corral. These two are professional cheerleader instructors and hail from Texas.

BENEFIT
Project Pink Benefit at The Barber House
Monique Barraza is no stranger to El Sereno especially since she has been setting
up her pop up shop every Friday evening at the El Sereno Farmer’s Market for over
a year now. Monique’s array of ribbons, bows, socks and other fashion accessories
raises money for her Abigail Barraza Foundation. Her foundation was named after
her mother and was featured in Our Town’s October 2010 issue for Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. Last month, one of her client’s struck interest on Our Town’s
Facebook page where an auction raised a considerable donation for an individual
in need. Recently she did a Comedy Night fundraiser at Ambiente in Alhambra.
And because this woman never stops, Monique is again involved in another great
awareness event, this time spreading her “diva-ness” to Lincoln Heights.
A couple of food trucks are participating in the June 11th event including Paradise
Cookies. Live DJ sets from DJ Javi and DJ Tonz will also be on hand. Please come
out to support this wonderful cause.
For more information contact Monique at [email protected]
or visit her website at www.abigailbarrazafoundation.org
Welcome Project Pink - a benefit to support The Abigail Barraza Foundation and
Locks of Love. The event is being held at The Barber House, a new hair studio for
men and women, in Lincoln Heights located at 204 S. Avenue 20 on Saturday,
June 11 from 12pm to 7pm. The Barber House is owned by Lincoln High School
alumni, Hector Solis. Just like Monique, Hector lost his mom to cancer and always
feels the need to give back. The custom painted mural on the wall inside his barber
shop has a pink and purple awareness bow embedded in it. It helps keep the
memories of lost loved ones close to heart and as a community to remember to help
those in need. The two met through a woman who recently went into her remission
in her own battle with cancer. And to put something together like this awareness
event makes natural sense to all involved.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to
financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21
suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The hair length
donation minimum is 10 inches. Monique says pink hair extensions will also be
available at the event for $10. A sweet treat bar provided by Madalyn’s Cupcakes
is also in on the good deeds. Madayln’s is owned by Kris Lara and based out of
Pasadena. All the businesses involved in Project Pink are local Latino owned
businesses and their common goal is to raise awareness in the neighborhoods in
which they grew up in. So far it’s working as support bridges are building in the
Northeast.

CHAMPIONS
WILSON MULES CROWNED CITY CHAMPIONS
he Wilson Varsity baseball team, in their biggest game of the year, played their best
Ttrophy
game at historic Dodgers Stadium and are bringing the City Section Championship
home to El Sereno. Andrew Urbina, a Junior, was the winning pitcher by only
allowing 2 hits the entire game against the Huskies of North Hollywood High School.
Having dedicated the game to his younger brother Isaiah, who passed away 3 years
ago due to a rare brain disease, Andrew’s performance on the mound was
spectacular and memorable. He shared these comments, ”I always talk to Isaiah
before a game asking him to be with me and not let anything bad happen to my
teammates. My Dad told me that if I get really nervous before the game, to just pray
with Isaiah and that’s what I did. I am so happy for all of my teammates because we
all played so well. It was crazy looking up at the stands behind our dugout and
seeing so many people watching us play and rooting us on. We had like twice the
amount of fans compare to North Hollywood. It was a good feeling walking up the
stairs after the game and shaking everyone’s hands and I’m just so happy that Isaiah
helped me and I really wish he was there with me because he would of been
clapping for all of us. This is something I am never going to forget because not too
many people get the opportunity of playing in Dodgers Stadium and say we won the
Championship.”
It was a memorable game for this gritty Wilson team and their defense was excellent
especially during some key innings when the Huskies were threatening. Second
baseman Chris Tovar and shortstop Steve Jauregui made several outstanding plays
and First baseman Rudy Aispuro amazed the fans by doing the splits when catching
the ball. There were at least four close plays at first base and it was Rudy’s stretching
ability that resulted in several important outs. Then there is third baseball Angel Araujo
who finished the game with 2 hits and scored the second run after hitting a monster
shot to left center that resulted in a triple. Martin Vasquez, Wilson’s other pitcher,
played a vital role in getting his team to the Championship game when he pitched in
the quarterfinal game against Dorsey High School.
Saturday’s victory was a team effort and the entire team played awesome and they
should feel very proud of this accomplishment. On behalf of Our Town El Sereno, the
entire El Sereno Community, Wilson High School, and most importantly the many
young fans who you have inspired, we applaud you in playing a great game and for
doing a great job in representing your community well. Congratulations to Head
Coach Fidel Cataño and the coaching staff for all their hard work throughout the year
and for guiding the Wilson High School Varsity Baseball Team to the 2011 City
Section Division II Championship – a very well deserved honor.

DINING
Dining With Anthony And Deidre
Welcome back to another sensational month of Dining with Anthony and
Deidre. We’re excited to let our readers know about El Sereno’s 1st Gourmet
Food Truck Event which took place Saturday, May 21st in the Portola
Pharmacy Parking Lot, located at 5014 Huntington Drive South. From great
music lifting you with high energy, to gourmet food filling a satisfied stomach,
this event had every element for a great time. The event, Band Together for
Wilson High School Gourmet Food Truck Festival, is the first of many to raise
funds for Wilson’s High School’s Music Department. This important cause,
sponsored by Our Town El Sereno, Dining with Anthony and Deidre,
Councilmember Jose Huizar, Xokotatl Cafe, and Cal State LA Federal Credit
Union, was a great turn out for all. There was so much buzz for the event, it
immediately drew a crowd minutes before the scheduled start. We were
excited to see so many “foodies” from all over Los Angeles come to El Sereno
and participate in tasting delicious food, while listening to great sounds from
talented musicians.
The gourmet trucks that took part of this great event were: The Grilled Cheese
Truck, Lardon, Mambo Juice and Cupcakes A Go Go. We especially enjoyed
free refreshing beverages and hot chocolate samples from our local Xokolatl
Cafe and the Lipton Brisk Ice Tea Street Team. Adding to the excitement, in
attendance was the honorable men from Fire Station 47, their presence fired
up the already spirited crowd.
As the event went into its first hour, opening band, Dig Jelly, took the stage and
rocked the party. This alternative metal rock band consists of powerful
songstress, Rayko, rocket charged bass player, Rain Balen, heavy handed
drum player, Joey Felix, and impressive lead guitarist,
Bobby Lochner.

midst of
this wonderful
community event, we also
got a taste of great music from
our very own Wilson High School
band. Music director, Brian Hollet, lead aweinspiring talented youth with an amazing performance. We enjoyed the
band’s rendition of Metallica’s, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”. The last
performance, The Head Lite View, was performed with lots of electrifying heart
by a trio of fun brothers, Omar, Eppie and Leo Cabral. Their energetic sounds
filled the night air with some awesome alternative rock’n roll. We would also
like to mention Matt from the Airliner, a bar-nightclub in neighboring Lincoln
Heights, who provided a great PA system and helped with the sound
engineering. We would like to congratulate the raffle winners and thank them
for their additional support. They are as follows: Jim O’Brand from Monrovia,
El Sereno residents Sandra and Jesse Ponce, and Susana Rosas, Ulysses
Forosan visiting from Japan, and Clemente Forosan Jr., from Highland Park.

GIRL SCOUTS
El Sereno Girl Scout Juniors Bridge in San Francisco
O
n my honor, I will try to serve God and my country, help people at all times and
live by the Girl Scout Law.”, The Girl Scout Promise. It was May 7, 2011 the
35th Golden Gate Bridging Ceremony, where Junior Girl Scouts bridge to Cadette,
the next level of scouting. Only 3,184 Junior Girl Scouts and 1,936 troop leaders
participated in this event from 14 different states. It could not have been a more
perfect morning. The sun was shining, the sky was a crisp beautiful blue, a perfect
70-degree day and it would not have been San Francisco without a slight windy
day. The girls woke up bright and early, excited for the day ahead. A day we had
only talked about for the past five years. We planned, we fundraised and we had
fun in the process. The girls learned a lot about themselves and their Girl Scout sisters
in all the events, workshops and outings leading up to this day. Seven girls: Celine,
Elizabeth, Janelle, Katelyn, Lauren, Rachel, Viviana and their families made the trip to
sun shine city, San Francisco. We traveled all the way from our little beloved town,
El Sereno. Unfortunately two other girls, Fayth & Sabrina, would not make the trip.
The girls prepared mentally for the 1.7 mile walk but never did they expect to have
so much fun. They packed sweaters, hats, water bottles, and snacks and put on their
specially made shirts. The shuttle picked us up at the Radisson Fisherman’s Wharf
Hotel. It drove us to the north end of the bridge. We checked in and were free to
walk and S.W.A.P.S. with hundreds of other Junior Girl Scouts. S.W.A.P.S. translates
to “Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere”, it represents the
event, displays the event date, the troop number, the city and it’s made by each Girl
Scout with their special touch, a keepsake if you will. A girl scout trades her
S.W.A.P.S.to another girl scout for her S.W.A.P.S. At the north end of the bridge we
met troops from Huntington Beach, San Diego and Oakland. So many new friends
and so many cute S.W.A.P.S.! Each year the NorCal Girl Scout Council sponsors
this event. The staff and security themselves prepare S.W.A.P.S. to trade with the
girls. I thought it was funny when we came to the second tower of the bridge for
short break only to have the security ask, “Do have any S.W.A.P.S.?” His orange
vest was covered with S.W.A.P.S., ours would add to his collection.
complete the 1.7 mile walk on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Never had this
walk been so meaningful. One girl in particular, Lauren, had a bright idea. After
having the wind knock off her baseball cap more than a few times, she tied her scarf
to her baseball cap on one end and tied the other end to her backpack. Once the
wind knocked off the baseball cap a couple more times, she pulled her baseball
cap like a fish line to retrieve it. I was surprised to have my husband, Alex, and my
son, Thomas, meet us at the second tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. Two other
troop parents, Cesar & Martin, along with Rachel’s brother, Cesar, cheered us on as
we came to the end of the bridge. A perfect family picnic followed to culminate this
beautiful day.
As I look back on this day the only thing missing to make this trip special are my
three Daises: Anna, Isabel and Natalie, my two Brownies: Elizabeth and Marisa,
my four Juniors: Alyssa, Fayth, Mary and Sabrina, and my one Cadette: Zoe, who
bridged in San Francisco just one year earlier. To think I only started with six Daisy
Girl Scouts five years ago and now my troop is plentiful. My girls and their families
hold a special place in my heart; I love each and every one of them. Being their
troop leader has been the best experience in my life, I would not trade that for
anything.
Veronica R. Mercado - Girls Scout Troop Leader Troop 7711
The walk on the bridge was fun, windy as you can imagine and a memory my girls
will have forever. Celine, Elizabeth, Janelle, Katelyn, Lauren, Rachel, Viviana,
assistant leader, Adriana, troop parents Mari, Alvin and Eric along with myself would
