Value in Vintage Better than Naked was born a couple of years ago, but only fully launched about twelve months ago on the online store Etsy. Initially the project was a partnership, but soon after Stacey Steffe took over the reigns as sole proprietor. For Stacey, this solo traveling store proves to be a revolt from all that she has ever known. Growing up in Central California, all she ever wanted to do was to move to LA to dive into the corporate world and to work in one of those magnificent skyscrapers. When she finally was able to make her dreams come true, she realized that she was dreaming the wrong dream. She did not want to be the assistant in “Devil Wears Prada” after all. So she quit her corporate life and combined two of her loves, vintage items and photography, to produce Samuels Creations Lichas Flowers Better than Naked. Although the early 90’s could be considered vintage now, Stacey chooses to sell items from the 80s and below. The 60s and 70s are her favorites, and looks to her task as “saving pieces of time.” To her, the importance lies more in the connection between the client and the little treasures she provides than on the return in sales. People can buy “vintage at vintage prices.” Better than Naked is riding the serendipitous wave of do-it-yourself projects. It is perfect timing to stress quality, recycling and to open pop-up shops. And her new trade has allowed Stacey to do what she most wants to do now, “be true to myself.” Every week she brings new vintage items at great prices to the El Sereno Farmers Market. Come check out the treasures. Her mother had just died from an extended struggle with breast cancer, affecting her deeply. But choosing not to let this tragedy consume her, in a little over two months after her mother’s death, she started a foundation named after her mother, Abigail Barraza. The Abigail Barraza Foundation is based out of Santa Fe Springs, but it serves a far greater community. From the beginning, Monique concentrated her breast cancer education efforts on areas where there was a lack of awareness. She quickly discovered that there was a great need among Latinas. Regularly visiting shelters, Monique spends an hour each time teaching the basics on prevention. She visits places such as the Tarzana Treatment Center, the Pennylane family centers, and various health fairs. Apart from the education aspect, she concentrates her efforts on fundraising for an individual in need. This she does by creating alternative, fashionable pink bows that she sells at farmer’s markets. The fashion aspect has developed into a new direction that includes little girls. The foundation now sponsors Little Diva for a Cure parties. Girls can enjoy an afternoon of dress up and shopping, while raising funds to help a woman in need. Currently, at the El Sereno Farmers Market, the funds raised at these new pink parties have helped Isabel, a single mother of four, who is still going through chemotherapy. Struggling to survive off her Medi-cal, and with no employment, the efforts of the Abigail Barraza Foundation have helped Isabel stay afloat during this difficult time. Although the last few years have been a roller coaster ride for Monique, she realizes that she is on the right path. She strongly believes that everything is guided, and the memory of her mother pushes her to help others. Whether in education Tales from the Eastside Before Betty became a Reyes, she had a German last name. Married at the age of 16, while attending Lincoln High School, she came to reside in El Sereno in the 1950s. Initially working as a teacher, she decided she wanted to work from home, so she took up the craft of making porcelain dolls. Going to downtown LA to get her business license, the clerk stated that she was getting in at a great time for doll-making as there was lots of money to be made. She did make dolls for close to thirty years, while also teaching classes to her neighbors in her backyard. The dolls come in all shades of skin color, just like the neighbors that have resided on her street these 60 years. But, of all her students, she feels that her best students were the Mexicans. “They were very creative.” or assistance, the Abigail Barraza Foundation is creating a new look for hope. GENERAL MANAGER * Carlos Morales Help Prevent Crime! PUBLISHER / EDITOR By Kimberly Bueno When students hear the words “Back to School”, a bad thought comes to their mind. They don’t want to go back to working on homework or schoolwork and dealing with teachers. Many students don’t want to learn and rather have fun and relax instead. Some of them just go to school to meet up with friends or because they are forced by their parents, but I believe that students should go so they could learn and do well in the future. Having a career in life is the most important thing. You could buy yourself anything you want and live happy instead of working at a fast food place that won’t get you anywhere. One of the biggest problems causing this, is kids believe that by doing well in their last school grade level will get you to a good college or university but it won’t. You have to start early and think about college once you enter high school. So my suggestion for students is focus on preparing for college even if you are entering as a freshman. I currently attend Woodrow Wilson High School and I am a 10th grader. My biggest dream is to attend Harvard University and become a lawyer of criminal justice. I want to put criminals in jail and keep them away from hurting anything or anyone else in the future. I have been dreaming about this ever since I was much younger. The movie “Legally Blonde” with Reese Witherspoon inspired me to want to go to Harvard. I like arguing and always winning. I found it to be my passion. But to make this come true, I have to work hard at it. The only thing that is going to get me there is my hard work at school. So a few things that I am looking forward to is doing well in all my classes. My goal is to get straight A’s and achieve a high GPA. I am going to work hard at my homework and classwork. I am going to try and get a tutor to help me when I do not understand my homework or to help me prepare for upcoming tests. Another thing I am looking forward in joining as many clubs as I can. Participating in clubs is very important for college. However, that is not my only reason to joining them; I want to express myself at school and discover all of the events that are available out there. Some clubs involve helping other people or the city and I believe that is also very important because it will show how great of a person you can be and you can possibly change some ones life. Another thing I am looking forward to is meeting new friends. I want to meet new friends that will be trustworthy and like me for who I am. I don’t want to be friends with people who waste my time and backstab me. I want this year to be fun and drama free. But school and life is not always perfect because there are things that I am certainly not looking forward to is drama. High school is all about drama. I hope nothing happens, but I cannot count on it. Another thing I am not looking forward to is tests. I am bad at test because I get really nervous and sometimes answer problems wrong when I think they are correct. Those are the things I am not looking forward to. ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS In THE VOICE COMMUNITY NEWS JOSE CRUZ “I am going to work hard to make it to Harvard and I Will Not Quit” I hope this article inspires other students to do well. You can also still have fun with friends. School doesn’t have to always involve focusing on studies. You can hang out, look out for cute guys, and just have FUN!!! High school should be about having the best time of your life. I interviewed some of my friends about this subject “Back to School, what it means to you”. My friend Diana Lopez who also attends Wilson and will be entering 10th grade as well is not excited about returning to school. She said “I hate when August comes because that is the last month you get to just hang out and relax because once September comes it’s all about having tons of homework and projects.” Diana even let me share that her freshman year didn’t go so great. For her final report card she got a D for two of her classes and had to make it up at summer school. Even though she does not know what she wants to be in the future she says “I want to start focusing on doing well because I don’t want to have a lousy job. I want to make my mother happy and let her know I am a smart person and could be responsible. Then maybe I could buy her a house when I’m older.” She has her goal this year and hopes that she will continue this for the next two years of high school. My other friend Victoria Martinez who also attends Wilson and will be entering the 10th grade is actually excited to go back. She said “I am happy because I will finally see everyone and get back to work.” Even though she hopes to be more involved in school, she says “I will try my best”. Many of my other friends are not so excited for example another friend I interviewed whom I will not mention her name said “I am not happy and wishes school was banned from the country!” She is not willing to try her best and does not have any plans for college. She does not know what she wants to do. This school year the best thing to do is focus on what you are really there for. Study, have fun and go to many dances as possible. Have fun because high school is the place where you want to live it up. So everyone, get ready, pack your school supplies and head back to work. Most of all, Have Fun and Do Well. Change YOUR behavior to change the Results! This is how we found this home with over grown weeds. Community members got involved to create the change you observe on the right photo. It all took place less that one week after THE VOICE made contact with the realtor. By Carlos Morales On July 7th, community member Jesse Orozco wrote to us on our facebook fan page THE VOICE COMMUNITY NEWS about foreclosed homes in our community that were not being maintained. Orozco wrote “I have noticed that realty companies are being careless and homes are becoming eyesores, some homes have weeds 3 feet tall. Could our Councilman get involved & call out these companies to get these homes somewhat presentable. We maintain our home and it is embarrassing to see these homes looking like crack houses. I love El Sereno, I have lived here all my life!” Timing is everything because a couple of days later, LA Mayor Villaraigosa and LAFD Chief Peaks took a publicized Aerial Tour on a helicopter of High Risk Brush Areas last week which included Eagle Rock; East Los Angeles; Echo Park; Glassell Park; Los Feliz; Montecito Heights; Monterey Hills; Mount Washington; Silver Lake and El Sereno. THE VOICE decided to take our own community tour on a bike and came across this house that is FOR SALE located at 4209 Lowell Ave in El Sereno. The realtors sign in front of the home belonged to Century 21 MASTERS out of WALNUT, CA. This was a great example of what our reader Jesse Orozco was writing to us about. We took these pictures and called the number, and asked to speak with the realtor who was selling this home I was transferred to John Flores. I identified myself and alerted John that we were writing an article about real estate agents not keeping properties in a clean and presentable condition; it lowers our property values, and is also a fire and safety hazard for the nearby homeowners. He refused to discuss the issue and said “We are no longer in charge of this property and that he was going to have the sign removed” I asked him to give me the info on the people who own the home, Flores replied “I will not, and stated “WELLS FARGO” has taken it over.” We told him that these weeds did not grow overnight, and that by the looks of this sign it has been here for some time”. We asked John for assistance to resolve this problem and asked him, “How would feel, if this home was located next door to your home in that condition? He did not want to be part of the solution and hung up. We immediately contacted Arturo Gonzalez with Councilman Huizar’s office and he was aware of this particular property and explained to THE VOICE that this property was reported to Building and Safety by CD 14 staff on June 23rd, which prompted building and safety officials to write a letter to the realtor to clear the brush. The realtor called back on July 1st and said it will be done in a couple of days. It has been over a month later and you can see what we found. A couple of readers suggested that we, as community members must get involved to create solutions in our community. HERE WAS AN OPPORTUNITY! We asked our fans of “THE VOICE COMMUNITY NEWS” to call CENTURY 21 MASTERS and let them know how they felt. The strategy worked, LESS THAN ONE WEEK of our phone calls the property was cleaned. We thank Jessie for becoming involved in our community, fans of THE VOICE and CD14 Staff for stepping up. Uncle Tony was scheduled to fight with legendary Heavyweight Champion, Jack Dempsey, aka, the “Manassa Mauler” in a bout that was cancelled. Uncle Tony fought Max Baer in 1924. In Ray’s boxing career he lost only one fight. Another type of fight that Ray was involved with was his involvement in the struggle against the proposed 710 Freeway thru El Sereno beginning in 1989 with the newly formed El Sereno Organizing Committee. The second incident took place on Saturday, July 31st, around 5pm in the Rose Hills area near the corner of Sardonyx Street and Mercury Streets (just one block west of Rose Hills Park). A 14 year old girl was walking on 4400 block of Sardonyx Street near Galena Street. A brown van pulled up along the child and said “GET IN”, the child did not understand what the man said and was a little puzzled, and the man repeated himself and said “I SAID TO GET IN” Luckily the child was meeting her cousin who was waiting at the corner at Mercury, they ran to meet and embraced each other, and the man in the van drove past them then circled again. Most of the reading material currently on Wilson’s bookshelves is worn, outdated, and in many cases not relevant or appealing to today’s students. In the words of Wilson’s Teacher Librarian Rebeca Borges, “A library is the heart of any school.” However, based on current circumstances, Mrs. Borges now regrettably reports that the heart of Wilson no longer beats with the strength it once did. According to the CHP’s Statewide Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 642 pedestrians and 130 bicyclists were killed in collisions statewide in 2008. Statistics show another 13,405 pedestrians were injured in crashes along with 11,760 bicyclists. In an effort to reduce these occurrences, the CHP secured a grant for approximately $237,000 from the State Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant provides funding for traffic safety educational programs, public awareness campaigns, increased patrol and protective equipment for pedestrians and bicyclists (e.g. helmets and reflective wrist bands). “Through education and enforcement, our goal is to improve safety out on the roadways,” said Captain Greg Peck, commander of the CHP’s East Los Angeles Area office. “Everyone will have the opportunity to talk to our officers in openforums, learn the importance of sharing the roads, and even obtain protective equipment which may very well save their life.” The project, which began April of this year, is collaboration between the CHP, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, local community leaders and bicycle safety advocates. It is designed to assist law enforcement officers in educating drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians alike on the dangers of ignoring the rules of the road.
