El Sereno Woman, 81,
Reported Missing,
Killed In Car Accident
An 81-year-old El Sereno woman who was
reported missing has been killed in a 3 car
accident in Chino Hills, August 2nd police
said.
Lydia Campos, El Sereno, was last seen
leaving her home at 8 a.m. Thursday, en route
to her doctor's office, said Officer Jason Lee of
the Los Angeles Police Department's Media
Relations Section. Family members were told
she never arrived home, and police issued a
call for public help to find her. Campos drove
her 1994 Buick Century west on Grand
Avenue about a fourth of a mile east of Long
View Avenue when she crashed at 9:10 p.m.
into a truck, according to San Bernardino
County Sheriff-Coroner's Department.
Campos was pronounced dead at the scene,
near the Chino Hills and Diamond Bar border,
after she was taken out of her Buick and could
not be revived. Witnesses saw the Buick travel west in the eastbound lanes before the three
vehicles crashed west of Grand Avenue Park
on Grand, according to a San Bernardino
County Sheriff's Department news release.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said
Campos traveled on Grand when she crossed
into the eastbound lanes and hit the Ford. The
crash caused the truck - which was headed east
- to spin into the next lane and hit another
vehicle. There were no injuries to the two
other drivers, who were released from the
scene, the sheriff's release said. The accident is
still under investigation.

THE VOICE will be
providing a community
screening on the film
"Father G and the
Homeboys" directed by
John Bohm. This documentary is about Father
Greg Boyle and Homeboys
Industries and their efforts
in creating change in many
peoples lifes. We will be
making an announcement
as to the location and time
soon. We thank John Bohm
for allowing us to bring the
screening of this film to
this community.
We
encourage Gangs members, Law Enforcement,
Politicians, Correctional
Facilities, Faith Based
Organizations,
Gang
Intervention Agencies,
Teachers, Educators, and
the COMMUNITY in
general to come to this
event!
As you may have noticed
THE VOICE has been
printing a crime report of
what is happening in ourcommunities on a regular
basis now for the past several months.
We have received lots of
feedback regarding this
issue. Our stand on this
matter is that we will not
pretend it is not happening
or that it does not exist. It
affects families; Mothers,
Fathers, Sisters, Brothers,
Uncles, Aunts, Cousins,
Friends, Classmates, Coworkers, Neighbors and the
general well being of the
place we call home. The
reason we report it, is for
you the community to be
informed, and keep your
eyes open. Talk to your
neighbors about it, start
community Block Watches.
Our goal is to get the community involved by taking
action. Start a petition and
submitted to your councilman DEMANDING more
police for our neighborhoods.
By you starting to take
action right now, it will
create a safer tomorrow.
Just as LAPD released
the latest crime statistics
showing crime going
down, there has been a
strong surge of shootings in
the area this past month.
We are only reporting on a
couple of them, we could
actually fill a complete
page with nothing but
shootings that happened
this past month. Let us
know what you think!

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
ISAIAH URBINA
By His Father
Our eight-year old son Isaiah Urbina
passed away at 11:26AM PST on Thursday,
July 26. He had seizures and lost consciousness on Monday afternoon and died
2 1/2 days later. He died of adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) a Brain Disease we didn't
know he had. This disease affects boys
between 4-10 years of age and usually progresses from 1 to 10 years, debilitating the
patient until it kills them. Unfortunately,
his disease accelerated at an unusually high
speed. There is no known cure.
Isaiah was an amazing boy that loved to
interact with people. He was an Angel,
very funny, incredibly smart, loving, giving, caring, athletically skilled and a talented rapper, singer and dancer. He was truly
a gift from heaven that touched every person he came in contact with and left an
impression that will last a lifetime. It is difficult to understand why such a loving boy
would have to leave us so soon but in the 8
years he was with us, he lived every day to
the fullest. Isaiah loved being around people and enjoyed talking to complete
strangers. It was scary as parents to see our
son do that as we all know there is plenty of
evil living amongst us but now that I reflect
back, I see that Isaiah was an Angel sent
from Heaven and he was just doing his
heavenly duties. My wife and I are honored in the fact that the Lord choose us to
watch over his Angel we named Isaiah
Raven Urbina.
We buried Isaiah on Saturday August the
4th and can't conceive going on with our
lives without him. How can we? In a flash
of a moment our lives have been shattered.
It was just last week that our boy was
laughing and watching a movie with us and
the next day, he is gone. I know I must
remain strong for my other son Andrew and
my wife but I still can't understand why this
had to happen to our son and family. I feel
as a part of me has left with Isaiah and feel
this incredible feeling of emptiness and
sadness. I just wish I could have one last
conversation with Isaiah. I talk with him a
lot and truly feel he is the one that has
given us the strength to deal with this horrific nightmare.
My wife Letitia and I want to take the
time to extend our deepest appreciation for
all the love and support you have all provided to us and our wonderful son Andrew.
It is truly amazing to see all the acts of
kindness you've done for our family. It is
with no doubt that your willingness to
extend yourself to us during this period of
drama, has made it much easier for us to
Public Auto
Auction
cope with this horrible pain and sadness.
We are blessed in being surrounded by our
family and friends who have demonstrated
tremendous amount of Love and Support
toward us.
I know Isaiah is up in Heaven looking
down and clapping knowing all that you
have done for us. I would never want anybody else to feel what we are feeling. It is
an indescribable feeling of sadness. We
truly thank you for all that you have done
for us. I truly wish to acknowledge each of
you but the list will go on and on. Just
know that you have touched our hearts and
have made an incredible impact on us.
May God Bless your wonderful souls and
know that your act of kindness will never
be forgotten or overseen. Again, Thank
You.
So keep Isaiah in your hearts and follow
his examples of loving all people. Stay in
contact with your extended family and love
your brothers, your sisters, your parents,
your family, your pets, your neighbors,
your friends, your cousins, your tio's, your
tia's, and your grandparents, the way he
loved them all. But most important, forgive someone that has done wrong to you
and reach out to them because life is too
short and what a shame it is that there are
family members we don't see anymore due
to our inability to forgive. Isaiah enjoyed
entertaining people so see him singing by
logging in on YouTube and search for
Isaiah Urbina. Isaiah, we Love you so
much. You teach the Angels how to Clap
and tell God you want to be the Guardian
Angel for all the kids of El Sereno.
We Love you Big Dawg!!!

SPOTLIGHT ON FILM
FATHER G
AND THE HOMEBOYS
The Story of Father Greg Boyle and Homeboy Industries
THE VOICE had an opportunity to
meet and spend some time with School
Teacher and Film Director John Bohm, a
humble, 41 year old second-grade
teacher in the area.
He started work on his first documentary film and started to follow the lives of
six troubled youths from his school in
East Los Angeles.
A colleague told him about Jesuit
Father Gregory Boyle and his ministry of
helping gang members get out of gangs
and into real jobs. Having grown up in
upstate New York with three priest
uncles, Bohm was intrigued.
"When you cross the threshold of the
place, it's brewing with life," said Bohm
of his first meeting with Father Boyle at
Homeboy Industries, where the priest's
anti-gang program is based.
Bohm, who teaches in an area surrounded by gang violence, wanted to
understand how Homeboy industries
could create such a radically different
environment where former enemy gang
members work side by side answering
phones, making T-shirts, landscaping
gardens or kneading bread at a bakery.
What he learned at this center eventually became the documentary he put
together with co-director Pete Tapia; it is
called "Father G and the Homeboys" and
is narrated by actor Martin Sheen.
THE VOICE had the opportunity to
screen the film. It is a documentary
about the real endless cycle of gang life
and drugs and why children get attracted
to these gangs. But the film had its
beginnings more than four years ago,
when Bohm, a parishioner at St. Peter
Church in Los Angeles, began tutoring
"homies" preparing for high school
diploma equivalency tests at Homeboys
and started interviewing youths totaling
more than 100 hours of film.
He wanted to chronicle the lives of
several youths as they struggled to get
out of gangs or heal from drug and alcohol addictions and dysfunctional family
backgrounds. Father Boyle's determination to stand by these young men and
women, no matter what, was a catalyst
for profound personal change that director Bohm captures in this film.
Bohm and his first film editor struggled for more than a year over creative
differences; whether to make the film a
soulful character study or edit it into
quick cuts in the style of MTV. The two
finally parted ways and Bohm found a
kindred spirit in Tapia, a film editor who
was looking for a new project at the time.
"You can't lump them all together. If you
take time to listen to their back story,
you'll have a deeper understanding of
why they have gone this route.
Tapia, 37, found in the film a way to
make sense of his years growing up and
attending St. Joseph Church with his
family while gang members lived next
door and had always been angry about
the gang violence and death in his neigh-
borhood.
When he met the people featured in the
film and got to know them, his feelings
changed, a reaction he hopes viewers
also will experience. "Everyone has all
these good or bad things in them," stated
Tapia.
The film has already won several
awards, including best documentary
from the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival.
It was featured in Hollywood at the
Dances With Films Festival in July 2007,
where the first screening was sold out so
a second screening was added. After the
screening of the movie to those primarily
from the Homeboys neighborhood, several former gang members in the audience stood up and recounted their stories
of leaving gang life.
That was sweet satisfaction for Bohm
who financed the $103,000 documentary
from his teacher's salary, Cal Teacher's
Credit Union loans, and a fundraiser that
brought in $6,000 from family, friends
and Homeboy staff and supporters. He's
now seeking a distributor for the film.
When asked if it was worth it, he
responded, "absolutely, The pain in these
kids is so severe that they lash out in horrific ways," he said. "But once they begin
to release the pain in proper ways, the
love begins to creep in - love of others
and love of themselves. Nothing is more
satisfying than just watching someone's
spirit grow."
This film is a testimony on how a couple of people can make a change in
other peoples life's. Bohm's documentary should be seen by everyone! THE
VOICE will be announcing a date in
the near future to host a community
screening. Please stay tuned!

As an educator for over 30 years I have
made it clear to parents and students, that
the way to succeed is no secret. In this
great United States of America, people
have shown time and time again that
despite obstacles that are placed in their
lives, they can and do succeed.
Preparing for the upcoming school year
should be a priority to you and your child.
Having high expectations for yourself,
your child and their teachers is the first
step in helping them succeed. Expect that
you will be involved with your child's education.
The learning process starts at home.
Don't expect that all you have to do is send
them off to school. You're the parent,
you're the adult, teach your child to have
strong and positive values. Teach by modeling the values you expound, such as
respect, responsibility, reliability, honesty,
trust and concern for others. Help them to
be organized, teach them how to be consistent and persistent.
Encourage your child to do their best.
Remember, your child's job is to be the
best student that they can be. Show
through example that education is important, be involved with their studies.
Motivate them to enjoy learning and to
appreciate school. Talk to your child about
their future. Find out what their interests
are and nurture their interests through
books, movies, trips and discussions. Your
child learns much from observing you, if
you settle for less than your best, so will
they. We have one life to live, live your life
well.
Buy them the school tools (pencils,
paper, notebooks, backpack...) that they
need in advance. Start the school year off
right. Prepare your child by giving them
the necessary skills that will prepare them
for the future and the challenges that they
will face. Talk with your child about what
they are doing at school each day. Be open
and take the time to hear what they are saying. Be reassuring, and work with them to
overcome problems that arise.
If needed, consult with their teacher,
counselor or administator. You're the parent, you're the adult, you are the person
who should be in control over most of the
decisions for your child. Make your rules,
be fair, be firm, be consistent. Make sure
that your rules are clearly understood. Let
them know exactly what you expect from
them at school and at home. Some rules
can be negotiated while others can't.
Reward them when they follow your
rules and provided consequences when
they are not followed. Let your child know
that you are doing what a good parent
should do and that you love them.
Make sure that your child is safe walking to and from school. Know their route
and have a time that you expect them to be
at school and a time to be home. Know
what the school's rules are for homework,
being tardy, dress codes, phones, etc. If
your child is bullied, do not over look it. If
your child is uncomfortable or scared to
tell and adult at school, phone the teacher
or counselor and ask them to help. If your
child witnesses other students being bullied or threatened, teach them to look out
for others and have them tell you and/or an
adult at school. This can be done anonymously.
All of us have a job in this society, and
that is to help make it as safe and civil as
we can. Teach your child to choose their
friends wisely and carefully. Help them
select friends that will be good for them.
Know who your child is with and where
they are at ALL OF THE TIME.
Teach your child to show appreciation
towards teachers and other adults at their
school. Lastly, know that the potential for
success lies within each one of us.

Over 5,000 marijuana plants were discovered. Preliminary estimates put the street

El Sereno celebrates the life and love of Victoria Sifuentes (August
22, 1960- July 29,2007). Victoria left behind countless memories and
heart-warming stories for her family to cherish forever. The Sifuentes
family and friends will always remember Victoria for her joyful, loving spirit. She loved her family and placed great value on the relationships she had with others. She loved to play sports with her husband and two sons and, as with everything she did, she gave it her
whole heart. The Sifuentes Family would like to express gratitude
for the prayers and support of The Church and of those who showed
Victoria and her family love during these past difficult times.

Motion that called for tougher penalties against individuals who assault police officers.
Recent crime data shows a dramatic increase in the number of assaults against LAPD officers. In the first half of 2007, the LAPD registered 53 assaults against police officers, representing a 39 percent increase in such crimes. Out of those 53 assaults, nine of those officers had been shot or shot at.

El Sereno Man Fatally Shot After Choking Police Officer
On Thursday night, August 9, 2007 two LAPD Officers responded to a
Domestic Violence family dispute investigation at 5243 Huntington Drive, just
before 9pm. Upon arrival the officers met with an injured female at the scene
and were taking a report from that victim who is nine months pregnant stated
Captain Blake Chow of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officers called for an ambulance after establishing that the pregnant
woman had been a victim of spousal battery and did received injuries. Her
boyfriend/fiancée had fled the scene prior to the arrival of the officers. While
conducting the investigation, the suspect returned to the scene while his girlfriend was being attended to and then he confronted the officers. A brief altercation ensued then a violent struggle ensued involving the officers and the
boyfriend. During the altercation the suspect applied a chokehold to one of the
officers and the officer was incapacitated and unable to defend himself. The
suspect and the officer eventually both fell to the ground. When the 2nd officer noticed her partner losing consciousness by the choke hold, she fired one
round at the assailant stated Officer Jason of the Los Angeles Police
Department's Media Relations Section. The suspect received a single gunshot
to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles Coroner identified the fatally shot man as John Anthony
Rico (30 years old) said Craig Harvey of the coroner's office. The Female victim was identified as Gracie Sanchez. Rico's girlfriend Sanchez stated that her
boyfriend was excited to be a dad. She says the couple had an argument
Thursday evening. He had been drinking, she called police thinking they
would arrest Rico for a few hours, giving him time to calm down. "I didn't
expect all this to happen. I feel that they should not have taken his life. He
knew the baby was due any day," says Sanchez.
Catherine Escovedo who rents a room from Rico and Sanchez heard the shot
and looked out to see what happened. "She (2nd officer) was on his back while
the (1st) officers head was underneath Johnny's arm which looked like Johnny
was struggling with the officer. That is when I thought that the officer was
down because he didn't move," stated Escovedo, the couple's roommate. She
says the male officer eventually stood up while his partner called for backup.
That is when she realized that Rico had been shot in the head.
The Officer who was in the choke hold was taken to the Los Angeles County
USC Medical Center where he was treated a for head injury requiring stitches
and later was released. The 2nd Officer received an injury to her right hand and
was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was treated and released
according to LAPD Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz.
Police are conducting a thorough Use of Force Investigation. The officers
involved are veterans on the department at the Hollenbeck station. Force
Investigation Division personnel responded and are investigating the shooting.

Another Liberty affirming decision from
the DC Court of Appeals
By Michael McGuire
If you all recall, by reading THE
VOICE Publications February issue, an
article titled "The IRS has a
Problem", you then are aware of the
profound and significant decision from
the DC Court of Appeals in the Murphy
case and what that will mean to the
American people regarding the alleged
"Income Tax".
Well, talk about a one-two punch; the
same court in March of this year rendered its decision in the Parker vs. DC
case. A pro liberty, pro 2nd amendment
ground breaking case that overturned
the long standing Washington DC gun
ban. With meticulous attention in its
dicta with regards to words like "keep"
and "bear", the court ruled that the individual has the absolute right to bear
arms.
Although it did not comment in detail
with regard to a militia, it did clarify that
arms kept by individuals were necessary
for a militia. Leaving militia as a political consideration, the court ruled that
the individual had a natural and constitutional right to keep and bear arms. The
court also held unconstitutional the
city's requirement that registered
firearms be kept unloaded, disassembled
and under trigger lock.
The Parker decision will ultimately
make its way to the Supreme Court.
First though, litigants will petition for an
hearing before the same appeals court.
The ruling was so well argued, then
briefed by the court that an appeal for en
banc will most likely be refused.
Writing for the majority, Judge
Laurence Silberman said in the courts
interpretation of the 2nd amendment:
"The operative clause, properly read,
protects the ownership and use of
weaponry beyond that needed to preserve the state militias. Again, we point
out that if the competent drafters of the
Second amendment had meant the right
to be limited to the protection of state

militias, it is hard to imagine that they
would have chosen the language they
did. We therefore take it as an expression of the drafters view that the people
possessed a natural right to keep and
bear arms, and that the preservation of
the militia was the right's most salient
political benefit - and thus the most
appropriate to express in a political document".
DC Mayor Fenty, complained emotionally that this decision flies in the
face of laws that have decreased gun
violence. Although gun crime was on
the decline before the DC gun ban,
crime tripled in the first 15 years after
the ban.
For good or bad, the only Supreme
Court case involved with the right to
keep and bear firearms is the 1939 case
USA vs. Miller. Miller did not consider
or include arguments with regard to a
collective right vs. an individual right to
firearms, but whether short-barreled
shotguns were protected under the 2nd
amendment. The Supreme Court did not
hold, as some have argued, that the
short-barreled shotgun was not protected, but remanded the case back to the
district court for further review. Miller
in the interim was murdered, and the
case now back at district level was
dropped.
Of course all the anti-liberty, anti-gun
groups are out in force and going
berserk over the Parker court ruling. The
Brady bunch has declared the decision
"judicial activism at its worst." Well the
Brady crowd should review the history
behind the Warren vs. DC case. They
should also be made to understand the
quote "When only cops have guns, it's
called a police state" As Americans we
should all, collectively, congratulate the
DC Circuit Court of Appeals on yet
another, historic, liberty oriented ruling
and hope that its message spreads from
coast to shining coast.

CHEERLEADING IN EL SERENO
In 1991, the LA Spirit Cheer Squad founded by Laura
Juarez-Williams and Gustavo Rodriguez was the first All-Star
team in Los Angeles. LA Spirit, later became LA's Pride, El
Sereno Pride, and now PRIDE ALL-STARS directed by Takia
Fox.
Pride allows any child from any community ages 5-18 to be
a part of a great program. We have nine coaches on staff who
teach cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics. Three of our
coaches are also currently cheerleaders on a professional level
6 cheer team, called PACE All-Stars. Pride competes all over
California, Nevada, and we've even gone to Hawaii for an
international competition.
The squad's booster club led by it's fundraising coordinator
Maggie Dominguez, provides at least one fundraising opportunity per month to offset the cost of the program. Pride plans
to attend numerous local competitons this season, 3 national
competitions, and one international championship held in
Honolulu, Hawaii. We appreciate the support of the community in trying to raise funds to send all of our 47 cheer members to these fabulous places, allowing them to create lifelong
memories.
Please contact us if you would like to be a sponsor, or have

Auto Dealership Used To Transport Drugs
Three arrests and Approximately 147 Vehicles Seize
On August 15, The Drug
Enforcement Administration (DEA)
along with the United States
Attorney's Office of the Central
District of California, Internal
Revenue Service - Criminal
Investigation, El Monte Police
Department, Bell Gardens Police
Department,
Pomona
Police
Department, Los Angeles County
Sheriff's Department and the
California Department of Motor
Vehicles announced today the arrest
of 3 individuals and the seizure of 147
vehicles, involved in the distribution
of cocaine and methamphetamine.
On August 15, 2007, agents and
officers conducted an operation in the
4300 block of E. Third Street in Los
Angeles, which resulted in the arrest
of Santos Robledo, 45, of Los
Angeles, Pedro Partida, 34, of
Pomona, and Jose Escobar Jr., 25, of
Pomona.
"Drugs were transported in every type
of hidden compartment imaginable,
and brought into our communities
under the guise of this auto dealership," said Timothy J. Landrum,
Special Agent in Charge of the DEA
in Los Angeles. "These arrests and
seizures will have a significant impact
on the ability of criminals to transport
and distribute cocaine, meth and marijuana into our neighborhoods. I am
pleased to say that through the cooperation of our law enforcement partners, this organization will no longer
have the means to operate freely on
our streets."
Partida and Robledo were arrested
that same afternoon when they negotiated to receive 40 pounds of
methamphetamine and will face
charges for conspiracy to distribute
narcotics. Escobar Jr. was arrested for
money laundering violations.
Debra D. King, Special Agent in
Charge, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation's Los Angeles
Field Office, stated: "Today's enforcement actions, including the execution
of arrest and search warrants, is
indicative of IRS - Criminal
Investigation's resolve, in conjunction
with our law enforcement partners, to
financially disrupt criminal narcotics
trafficking organizations that commit
crimes and profit form their activities.
Taking away the assets from these
illegal organizations hits criminals
where it hurts the most - it deprives
them of their profits. IRS - Criminal
Investigation specializes in following
the money generated by narcotics
traffickers, enabling increased crimi-
nal prosecutions and asset forfeitures."
This two year investigation revealed
that this organization would facilitate
the distribution of cocaine and
methamphetamine in the Los
Angeles area. Additionally, the organization used their car sales business to
sell vehicles equipped with concealed
compartments to other Los Angeles
based drug trafficking organizations.
These vehicles would be used to
transport drugs throughout the United
States.
Ken Weldon, Chief, El Monte
Police Department stated, "El Monte
Police Department values our relationship with the DEA. By working
together at the local, state and federal
level we have been able to successfully remove one more dangerous drug
trafficking organization from our
community."

noticed lots of smoke then seen
the fire at the Y Tire Warehouse.
George is a volunteer fire cadet at
station 47 on Huntington Drive.
No fire crews were on scene at
the time, he got on his bicycle
from Seigneur Avenue in
University Hills and rode down
the bike being stolen and decided
to do something about it… they
pitched in to buy George a new
bike, which he utilizes to get to
Fire Station 47 from University
Hills.
He got involved with a program supported by the Boy
Scouts in which young individuals in high school can get mentoring and learn the operation on
firefighting. He has been volunteering for a little over a year
now. So this story does have a
great ending….
GREAT WORK GEORGE!
