Both Magnet schools are part of the District’s voluntary desegregation program which provides a thematic, integrated educational experience. The enrollment capacity is 113 students for the Gifted Magnet, and 141 students for the Math, Science, and Technology Magnet. The Gifted Magnet serves students identified or verified Gifted per LAUSD guidelines. The Math, Science and Technology Magnet is a mathematics driven program designed for students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, medicine, or technology and is open to all students. Both programs offer an enriched and challenging internationally-minded, standardsbased, differentiated, academic curriculum. The themes of Math, Science, and Technology are emphasized in all classes and, all students are treated with the same high expectations bestowed upon gifted learners. Both programs are blended together to create and achieve one vision, one mission, and one purpose. El Sereno Middle School and Magnet Center operate on a traditional school calendar (Aug.June), and transportation is provided for all Magnet school students who live beyond a fivemile radius, or near established El Sereno M.S. OTS bus stops. Why Choose Our Magnets? The following is a list of reasons why our Magnet program is an excellent academic alternative to a regular middle school program or a charter school: Our G/HA and M/S/T Magnets have received the Excelling School and Achieving School ratings on the LAUSD Superintendent’s Performance Meter. Our Magnet program is a small school within a school that provides students with a distinct identity and a more personalized educational experience. We are an officially authorized International Baccalaureate World School. A majority of our Magnet students are identified gifted. We are partnered with Kaiser Permanente’s medical mentoring program named Hippocrates Circle. Our Magnet students have the opportunity to participate each day in two electives such as Art, Music, Leadership, Mandarin Computers, Technology, MESA, Yearbook, World Languages and Cultures, Spanish. We are a member of the USC Family of Schools. Each grade level has its own PE period. Magnet schools have their own supplementary budgets that can be used for extra classroom supplies, new books, technology, and field trips. Magnet teachers are more experienced they receive special training to teach gifted and high ability students. Students in our Magnet program have the same teachers for more than one year which helps the teachers better know the needs and strengths of each student. Sixth grade students have their own nutrition and lunch period. Most of our Magnet classrooms are located in close proximity to one another. We hope that you feel that these are compelling reasons for you to apply to one of our fine Magnet programs Thank you. For scholars to be eligible for the NAI scholarships, their parents must commit to attending 80 percent of these seminars, which meet on the University Park campus for four hours on Saturday mornings about 12 times a year. Those who complete the program, meet USC’s competitive admission requirements and choose to attend USC are rewarded with a full 4.5-year financial package, minus loans. While the Neighborhood Academic Initiative’s primary goal is to get neighborhood students into USC with a full financial package, the obligation doesn’t stop there. The Retention Component helps ensure that a student’s hard work getting into USC or another institution results in a degree. The program was established in 1989 and enrolled its first scholars in the 1991-92 academic year. Pulling together private as well as corporate resources, the NAI encompasses three major components: the USC Pre-College Enrichment Academy, the Family Development Institute and the Retention Program. The scholars receive full academic credit for these courses, which cover the following subject matter: The academy offers enhanced classes at USC on weekday mornings, the Saturday Academy, after-school tutoring, remedial and enrichment sessions, workshops on time management and study skills, PSAT and SAT1 preparation, cultural field trips and recreational activities. Grades 7 and 8: Language arts Before school each day throughout the year, NAI scholars meet on the University Park campus from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. for enhanced classes taught by teachers from their home schools. Grade 7: Pre-algebra (students must complete Algebra 1 prior to graduation from 8th grade) Grade 9: English and geometry Grade 10: English and algebra Grade 11: American literature expository composition and math analysis/trigonometry Grade 12: Advanced-placement English literature and either advanced-placement statistics or calculus Supplementing these early-morning classes, NAI scholars attend the Saturday Academy, which meets for four hours every Saturday to provide enriched as well as remedial instruction in English/language arts and mathematics. Courses incorporate lectures, tutoring and small-group exercises, and are taught by professional teachers, paid and volunteer tutors and teaching assistants from USC’s student body, and NAI alumni. In addition, peer tutoring and cooperative learning activities maximize opportunities for scholars to learn from one another and reinforce the knowledge they have gained. NAI scholars also receive two hours per week of structured afterschool tutoring. AVID is…. Interview Comments: MESA Schools Program (MSP) The MSP assists students at middle and senior high schools) so they excel in math and science and become competitively eligible for academically rigorous colleges and universities. The MSP partners with teachers, administrators, school district officials, schools and industry representatives to provide quality academic enrichment. Student selection and services are implemented through a collaboration involving teachers at participating schools and personnel from local MESA centers. The MSP offers: •Individual Academic Plans. The plans help monitor individual student progress toward college.. •Study skills training. Students learn the most effective study techniques for academic achievement. •MESA Day Academies. Hands-on math and science competitions give students a chance to meet like-minded students and vie for awards. Students follow MESA-developed curriculum that reinforce California state math and science content standards. Top winners of local competitions advance to regional and, in some instances, national contests. One of the country's most innovative and successful programs, MESA works with thousands of educationally disadvantaged students so they excel in math and science and graduate with math-based degrees. Learn what engineers do Engineering is the process of envisioning, inventing, creating and building the world around us. Engineers use the natural chemicals and materials found in the world, as well as the artificial chemicals and materials created in the laboratory, to design and build the things we need every day. For example, engineers use: •Brick, steel and glass to design and build buildings •Earth, rock, cement and asphalt to design and build roads and roadway systems •Wood, aluminum and new composite materials to design and build cars, airplanes and jets •Earth-moving plans to design and build tunnels and dams •Engineering technology to solve and prevent medical problems by creating artificial limbs, artificial valves for the heart, various types of sensors for the blind, and safety equipment and clothing for firefighters •The principles of chemistry to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals and bio chemicals •And, knowledge of the properties of light to build lasers and the physiology of the body to design products that are comfortable and safe to use. In fact, before we can buy any product from a store – such as laundry detergent, computers, vacuum cleaners and tennis racquets – engineers must bring all the right materials together and assemble them in just the right way. How do engineers do all this? By using math and science to solve problems, engineers create new things and improve old things. As a result, engineers make our lives better. El Sereno Students Earn 24 Medals and Ribbons in MESA Pre-Lims Competitions.
