The South African family was out in force during the Bidvest Unity Walk which 24 took place in four cities on August 17 in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. An incredible 69 537 people took part made up of 23 214 employees and 46 323 Proudly Bidvest family members and friends. Bidvest is known for having a heart within the communities where our people Lighting the future live and work. It is great to be able to celebrate so many of these community initiatives in each edition of Bidvoice and this edition is no exception. What’s more, we donated more than 300 wheelchairs to QASA, the association for the benefit of quadriplegics and paraplegics. It was a magical day and in addition to changing the lives of the over 300 recipients of brand new wheelchairs, the walk was an opportunity to show the strength and unity of our Bidvest people. For many the walk has been an inspiration to get fit, lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The organisers, hosts and sponsors of the programme represent businesses across various sectors in South Africa. Our corporate sponsors play a critical role in ensuring that the schools selected to participate in the programme are provided with literacy resources and materials over a three-year period. I was told that we would be visiting schools in the Free State and that we would be handing over books and teaching supplies. But I came away from the weekend with new appreciation for everything I have. We visited a school with less than 100 students, but with teachers and parents who wanted to see the children succeed despite the struggles they face. With only four teachers, students of different ages and literacy levels had to learn together – something that really surprised me. This year was the final year that the school would be receiving support and we left with a commitment that the teachers would continue to use the resources provided to enrich the lives of their students. From July 2014 Bidvest owns 60% of DAC, an Italian distributor of food products. Giuseppe Scuola, who was born and raised in Libya, started this family-run business. When he returned to his family home in Italy, he began his career as a salesman in the pasta industry and saw an opportunity to deliver pasta to restaurants and hotels, rather than just to retailers. He set up a small warehouse in his garage, bought a van and DAC was born. That was 40 years ago. The business has grown phenomenally with revenues of €220m per annum. DAC employs about 400 people directly, with another 300 sales representatives who cover the whole of Italy. Giuseppe is chairman of the company and his son, Daniele, is CEO. PCL operates more than 300 heavy goods vehicles from three main sites in the South, West and Midlands of the UK. The company began from humble beginnings when founder, Joe Ricotta, knocked on the door of a nearby Arla dairy and asked if they needed any help with distribution. He quickly arranged the required logistics and PCL was born. As the dairy customers continued to centralise and grow, PCL grew with them. In addition, the scheme has saved each participant an average 30 600 gallons of fuel at a total cost of £190 000, and 320 000 kilos of carbon emissions have been prevented from entering the atmosphere. The scheme encourages staff members who either live close to or on the same route as each other, to share the driving and travel to work together, thus reducing the total number of miles travelled during the commute to work. Going the extra mile Martin Winfield, transport manager at Bidvest 3663’s Nottingham depot, received praise in a local newspaper in July 2014, following the extra mile he went by inviting a local on a tour of the depot. The local, who is a keen photographer and ex-trucker, had been searching the town for photo opportunities when he spotted a row of Bidvest 3663 trucks perfectly lined up. After being politely asked to leave when spotted taking a photo, he sent a copy to the depot transport manager along with an apology letter. A week later, he was pleasantly surprised to find that Martin had tracked him down and invited him on a tour of the depot. He was shown around the factory, had the logistics and running of the company explained to him and received a short drive in a truck, where modern in-cab technology was explained. GROUP PANORAMA Food tour of London Employees at Bidvest 3663 were taken on a food tour of London in June this year by the research agency Allegra Foodservice. The aim was to increase understanding of and appreciation for the latest trends in the UK food market. Members of staff across marketing, buying, contracts and tenders spent the day visiting various outlets and trying foods influenced by flavours from around the world. The first stop was Caravan, a restaurant in an old grain store, where coffee is a key focus and is freshly ground on site. After examining menus at Grain Bidvest 3663 staff tuck into a box of baked doughnuts. Store, which focuses on vegetables and Kerb, a collective made up of mobile food merchants serving street food, the group stopped at BoxPark, a retail and food outlet built from shipping containers in Shoreditch, London. They tried some Durbaninspired street food known as “bunny chow”, which is a loaf of bread filled with African inspired flavours. The group had a quick stop at Dum Dum Donutterie, where doughnuts are baked and not fried, followed by lunch at Meat Mission, a combination of burgers, chicken and chilli fries served in a Christian Mission building with stained-glass windows and religious-themed menus. It was then on to Koshari Street, serving an Egyptian-inspired street dish made from lentils, rice and pasta topped with a spicy tomato sauce and garnished with chickpeas and caramelised onion. The group had a look at Five Guys, a premium fast-food restaurant which started in Washington DC, serving Peruvian-inspired dishes and Dishoom, paying homage to old Irani cafés in Bombay and inspired by traditional Parsi dishes. The final stop was Big Easy, a BBQ and fish restaurant in an old electrical power station in Covent Garden. Here the meats are cooked slowly and there are over 500 spirits available, of which 300 are whisky. Earlier this year, PinkDrive unveiled South Africa’s first mobile women’s health unit, a fourteen-ton truck, described as a “doctor’s room on wheels”. It is able to address both cervical and breast cancer, the two most prevalent female cancers, with qualified mammographers and fully trained nurses soon to be joined by cervical cancer specialists. KMMSA’s donation includes a high-performance, high-resolution computed radiography unit for mammography imaging, a bizhub colour multi-functional printer for the printing of images and RamSoft imaging workflow technology for the immediate quality control of images and their distribution to radiologists for diagnostic reporting. KMMSA also upgraded the first mammography unit by installing a Ramsoft Mammo Gateway Viewer; this allows both units to connect to the PowerServer PACS. A chance meeting with Lily Reich through her husband, who had lost his leg 15 years earlier, led to the two becoming full-time volunteers to roll out a programme for disabled children. In March 2012 Bidvest stepped in as a monthly sponsor. “This sponsorship has had a huge impact on so many disabled children throughout South Africa,” says Lily. “Prior to the sponsorship, they do not even have wheelchairs at home. We try to reach them with holiday camps, junior deaf tournaments and interschool competitions. Comrades stars on the run This year three Bidvest Foodservice employees took part in the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon, the famous Comrades Marathon. After months of intensive training they finally started their 89km run, between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, on June 1 2014. Unfortunately, Sandile Vilakazi, with only 13km to go could not complete the race due to injury and had to support his colleagues from the side lines. Both Sonja Els and Sonja Venter completed the race in a time of 11 hours and 41 minutes, with Sonja Els receiving the renowned “Back to Back” medal for completing the race for the second year in a row. Congratulations to these three runners for their commitment and strength, as well as all the other participants.
