The Proudly Bidvest spirit is such a defining feature of the Bidvest Family.
We have included an extract from an email sent through by Elmen Lamprecht of
the Captial Outsourcing Group in South Africa which affirms this unique attribute.

The first lady of Bidvest
Little by little the people of Bidvest are getting to know their new chairperson, Lorato Phalatse. To some, she’s the woman in the
sturdy flat boots, industrial-strength jeans and hard hat who’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. To others, she’s the impeccably

CE’S MESSAGE
Another win for
Team Bidvest
Well done team, you’ve done it again!
Bidvest people put in some remarkable performances in 2013 to deliver another set of
good, solid results. Our revenue went up 14,9% to R153,4 billion while our trading profit
rose by 9,4% to R7,7 billion.
In sport, the league table at the end of the season is no accident. The numbers
don’t lie, but they fail to give a context and they don’t tell you about the quality of the
opposition.
Team Bidvest not only came out ahead; our team did it in tough conditions against
stern competition.
There are no easy wins any more. In national markets and individual industries
we’ve seen shake-ups and shake-outs. The surviving players are tough,
seasoned competitors. You have to be smart, innovative, resourceful and quick
off the mark to win market share against opposition like this.
I applaud all our people in all markets for toughing it out and again achieving
good results.
We felt the pressure and there was some margin squeeze. Some businesses
were streamlined. Operations had to become more flexible and nimble. But our
people showed remarkable ability to adjust, cope and secure new growth.
In the vast majority of our operations we do not make gains by employing
highly sophisticated technology. We simply employ good people.
Year after year, people give us our edge and 2013 was no exception.
We not only grew our existing businesses, we also grew by acquisition. We
expanded in markets worldwide and I take pleasure in welcoming new members of
the Bidvest family.
Among the acquisitions was the purchase of the Home of Living Brands (formerly
Amalgamated Appliances). This distributor of some of South Africa’s best known
household appliance brands creates the basis for a new division within Bidvest South
Africa.
This exciting development closes a gap in our service offering. Our range of industrial
and corporate services is now complemented by a consumer products capability.
This creates additional possibilities for expansion beyond South Africa’s borders.
Bidvest was born in Africa and believes in Africa. We are looking to grow at home and in
several overseas markets, but African growth is also a priority.
I am delighted to welcome our new chairperson, Lorato Phalatse. Lorato has been
familiarising herself with her new responsibilities for several months and is already
making a strong contribution. I must also say farewell to our former chairman, Cyril
Ramaphosa. I’ve worked closely with Cyril for nearly nine years. He’s made a unique
contribution to Bidvest’s transformation. I wish him success in his new role as deputy
president of the African National Congress.

Perseverance pays off
Brothers Clement and Sydney Mtshali are proof that where there
is a will there is a way. These qualified technicians manage off-site
workshops for major customers of McCarthy Commercial
UD Trucks.
Sydney looks after the 63-strong fleet at the Pick n Pay warehouse in Longmeadow,
where they do around 238 deliveries per day. Clement is responsible for the
workshop at Klipstone Unitrans, a bulk transporter of cement with 65 vehicles.
Clement started his career as a workshop assistant but, after two years, he
realised that there was little room to grow. At the same time he heard about
McCarthy’s learnership programme and decided to give it a go.
“I always wanted to be a technician,” says Clement, who built wire cars as a child

and later started tinkering with car engines. “I was overjoyed when I was accepted
on the learnership programme and managed to qualify as a technician after five
years. I enjoy my job tremendously and would love to be a service manager one
day,” he says.
“Both Clement and Sydney showed enormous potential from the start,” adds
service manager Chris Fourie. “We were impressed by their positive attitude,
willingness to go the extra mile and pride in their work.
“Working off-site adds additional responsibility as they often need to make
important decisions on their own in order to ensure that customers experience the
minimum downtime,” says Chris. “They have excelled and our customers are very
happy with their performance.”

“Siphiwe was our chauffeur to FNB Stadium on April 27 2013 to see Metallica.
He was the most polite and accommodating driver. I have not had such excellent

Hoki fish launched
Overfishing has placed the orange spotted
grouper (hammour) on the endangered red
list, making it crucial to find a substitute to
protect this threatened fish.
Following a call for action by the Emirates Wildlife
Society and other international organisations to raise
awareness of the hammour, HORECA Trade recently
launched Hoki fish to the UAE foodservice market.
This sustainable seafood option gives restaurants
and fast food chains the opportunity to prepare tasty
high-quality dishes using a sustainable fish, while still
being competitive in terms of price.
“Restaurants can now make a difference by replacing
hammour, which is unsustainable, with Hoki on their
menus”, said Marco Kouch, seafood category manager
at HORECA Trade. “By purchasing fish caught or
farmed using environment friendly practices, they also support healthy, abundant oceans,” he added.
Hoki has a succulent white flesh that is rich in omega-3 fatty acid, making it a good dietary choice. Hoki is considered the most exportable fish from New Zealand,
having been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and managed by the sustainable quota system set by the Government.

Going Platinum!
Rock stars aren’t the only ones who ‘go
platinum’. You can, too!
Our colleagues at Bidvest Bank make it easy,
thanks to their new international alliance with Visa,
the global payments technology company.
The bank’s market-leading World Currency
Card™ has become the passport to automatic
Visa Platinum status. You don’t even have to fill in
an application form.
Get a Bidvest Bank World Currency Card™
(which is your smart travel money option anyway)
and Visa Platinum privileges are added for free.
It all adds up to savings, upgrades and
privileged access in numerous countries at
numerous companies that are Visa Platinum
partners.
Bidvest Bank’s World Currency Card™ is the
first travel card in South Africa to offer these
benefits.
Neil Capazorio, head of the bank’s Card
Division, points out: “Visa Platinum status can
be worth thousands of rands in privileges,
rewards and savings on any overseas trip for
both business and leisure travellers, while adding
to peace of mind on issues such as purchase
protection and extended warranties for goods
purchased.”
Purchase protection and extended warranty
are important benefits. Visa Platinum purchase
protection pays the user back in full for loss,
damage or the theft of items bought with the
World Currency Card™, while users also qualify
for an extended warranty on all goods bought
with the card.
The bank now positions its market leader as a
smart option that’s “as safe as a credit card, only
cheaper.”
Currently, there are 14 cards in the range.
Cards in another four currencies are scheduled for
launch in the coming months.
The World Currency Card™ offers:
Conversion rate certainty – the card is
loaded with destination currency upfront,
‘immunising’ users from subsequent rand
volatility
No surprises on a traveller’s return – a
problem affecting those who come home to
surprisingly high credit card statements
Cost effectiveness – card-users transact at
a fixed exchange rate without a point-of-sale
or merchant transaction fee
Convenience – card activation is immediate
and users can withdraw cash at any Visa
ATM
Added security through PIN and signature
validation
Cash-carrying risk is removed – the card is
re-loadable at any time
Spending can be tracked via text, email or
online
If a card is lost, 24-hour support ensures
speedy replacement.
With Platinum status on top, card-users can enjoy
special privileges on a global scale. Platinum
benefits are offered by hotels, hospitality groups,
resorts, restaurants, upmarket retailers and many
other travel sector service providers.
Capazorio explains: “This means if you buy, say,
an iPad with your Visa Platinum card and it gets
lost or stolen you will be reimbursed in full for your
purchase.
“Good value is also vital and we believe the
savings achieved through Visa Platinum privileges
will be greatly appreciated at a time of Rand
weakness when travel budgets face growing
pressure.”

Friday July 5 2013 started out like any other for Nelson Nyiba, a driver
for Bidvest Foodservice Multi-Temp East London. En route to Queenstown
to do a delivery, Nelson and his crew came across a motor vehicle
accident that had just occurred in a risky area, just before Stutterheim.
They stopped to assist and found the driver of the vehicle unconscious. A crowd of people
had already started gathering around the accident scene, when Nelson noticed that the
driver’s wallet was on the passenger seat in plain view. He removed the wallet to prevent it
from being stolen in the chaos and handed it to his operations manager, Wayne Roux.

Energy-saving methods
With South Africans concerned about increases in electricity tariffs, it was perfect
timing to bring awareness to energy-saving methods at an exhibition held at
Cape Town International Convention Centre on July 3 2013.
Voltex took pride of place with its 10m banner. “The Voltex stand was fantastic,”
says Billy Bennett from WACO, a subsidiary of Voltex. “It really encouraged people to
become aware of the great benefits of our products.”
According to the 2013 Statistics South Africa, a decrease of only 2.6% of the
volume of electricity was reported between 2011 and 2012. In a nationwide survey
conducted by the Department of Energy in 2012, 67% of South Africans said that
they would be willing to use energy-saving light bulbs.
Voltex has urged citizens to start using LED and other energy-saving devices so
that the country’s energy usage may have a lesser impact on the environment. “There
is a wide range of products available, even LED floodlights, which will dramatically
decrease your electrical billing,” says Sean McCauley from Voltex Distribution.

Forty years since its invention, STABILO BOSS is still one of the

Günter Schwanhäußer launched these non-toxic, fluorescent

in everyone’s hands, from students to top executives.
Since then, more than 1.9 billion STABILO BOSS highlighters
have been sold around the world. That’s two every second

Sniffer dogs detect lizards
Bidvest Magnum’s rhino-horn sniffer dogs – Rico, Heddi, Renaldo and Condor – are now helping
to block attempts to smuggle sungazer lizards.
Already trained to detect rhino horn and ivory, the dogs are also learning to pick up the scent of the reptiles,
increasingly threatened by illegal collection and smuggling for the pet and traditional medicine trades.
The National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria provided lizards caught in the wild (they don’t breed in captivity) so that
their scents could be ‘imprinted’ on the dogs.
Gloved handlers using sterile tweezers placed scent-absorbing cotton strips with no scent of their own in the
sungazers’ enclosure, and then exposed the strips to the dogs for imprinting.
Sungazers, regal lizards with mild temperaments and a hardy nature, are popular in the pet trade. They excavate
burrows in open areas and shelter in them at night. Each morning, they poke their heads out and emerge if it’s sunny.
Their posture of holding their head up and alert earned them their vernacular name.
The typical warm-up period is followed by an active time of exploring the surroundings of the burrow for insects, the
mainstay of their diet.
The body spines of sungazers are sharp, but are not a problem during gentle handling. The tail is most heavily

Voltex sponsors CHIETA competition
Nine finalists vied for top honours at the inaugural CHIETA
national artisans skills competition. Held at the Nuclear Energy
Corporation of South Africa (NECSA) in Pelindaba from May 14
to 16, round three learners were given a simulated commercial
industrial installation to develop and wire correctly. They were also
required to design and wire a Star Delta starter motor. The final
part of their task was to conduct an installation test (right).
Voltex sponsored over R200 000 worth of equipment used by
the electrical trade competitors. Nick Gerber,
tender/projects manager at Voltex, says the
competition was well organised and the young
apprentices produced work of a high standard.
“At Voltex we believe that this kind of competition
will go a long way towards bringing top quality
artisans back into the industry and we encourage
all companies to send their artisans to next year’s
competition,” he said.

A stitch in time saves
nine through PinkDrive
PinkDrive is an initiative of Cause
Marketing Fundraisers, fast becoming one
of South Africa’s best-loved community
initiatives, whose aim is to create an
accessible breast cancer education and
screening programme for all South African
women.
The PinkDrive initiative currently powers two
mobile breast check units. The mammography unit
travels with qualified nurses to approximately 108
community clinics throughout South Africa. The
mobile unit hosts educational talks about breast
health, breast cancer and the importance of early
detection, as well as providing free clinical breast
examinations performed by registered nurses.
Thanks to sponsor, Bidvest, the PinkDrive
mammography unit visited public hospitals
throughout KwaZulu-Natal for five days during
May. In collaboration with hospital staff, free
mammograms were offered to women without
medical insurance.
Hospitals visited included Madadeni in Newcastle,
Ladysmith, Grey’s in Pietermaritzburg and Addington
in Durban. On the final day, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo,
KZN MEC of the Department of Health, attended the
proceedings. During the week, PinkDrive performed
over 130 mammograms for free to men and women
who, without this assistance, would not have been
able to afford this vital breast health service.
Says Noelene Kotschan, director and founder of
PinkDrive, “Hospitals and clinics across the country
are inundated with patients needing mammographic
services, some waiting for more than two months
to get an appointment. PinkDrive and the KZN
Department of Health have endeavoured to improve
the situations of women and men in KwaZulu-Natal
by providing these necessary services. Without

Equipment involved rolling up their sleeves for a
charity car wash to raise money for a local children’s
home.
Besides being a fun and popular event, a total
of R6 000 was raised. Collection boxes were also
made available for clothes, blankets and nonperishable foods and the response was astounding.
Vulcan plans to make this an annual event, with
branches taking part nationally.

Children from Denver Primary School.
To honour the 95th birthday of our iconic leader and Tata of South Africa,
SSC shared a memorable, fun day with 1 200 children at Denver
Primary School in Johannesburg, arranged by The Star newspaper
and Neotel.
As the learners cannot afford to buy their own stationery,
SSC was privileged to donate a significant number of products
in honour of Madiba. These included hundreds of glues,
scissors, files and various sought-after Croxley products.
Croxley is manufactured and distributed by SSC and

18 months ago, will remember Mandela Day, not only for
the brightening of its premises by selfless volunteers and
donors of paint, but also for SSC’s generous donation of
stationery.
From everyone at SSC: “Happy Birthday Tata Madiba,
thank you for inspiring us all to share and serve our fellow
South Africans, setting an example for the world.”

Reach for a Dream
To celebrate Helix’s 125th anniversary and 50 years of the inimitable Oxford maths
sets, Helix and SSC agreed to donate a portion from each set
sold to the Reach for a Dream Foundation. So far an
amount of R100 000 has been raised.
Due to the campaign’s success, Helix has decided to extend it
into 2014 through SSC. With Helix products geared to help children
achieve the foundation for successful careers, it is fitting to support
Reach for a Dream, which has been making dreams achievable for
children aged three to eighteen years who have been diagnosed with a
life-threatening disease.
Helix’s campaign is also a great opportunity for stockists to generate
sales that will reflect on their philanthropy, with undoubted rub-off on
the other Helix products – from rulers, T-squares, set squares, French and flexible curves,
stencils, compasses, ellipse templates, to black and white board equipment and adaptors.

Conquering the Cape Epic
Crown National’s Jannie van Niekerk and George Slabber represented the Six Gun Grill team at this year’s ABSA Cape Epic.
They did very well in this 10th year of the challenging 800 kilometre mountain bike race, coming in 270th overall and 152nd

Combatting the
Comrades
Sonja Els, an employee at Bidvest Foodservice head office South Africa, has always dreamed of
completing the Comrades marathon.
She began training in January 2010, after deciding to quit a 20-year smoking habit. Her
training began with short walks, leading up to her first 10 km marathon in July that year. Together
with the help of friend Themba Kunene, she worked out a training programme and started to run
every Sunday, covering an average of 230 km a month.
After completing the Two Oceans marathon in March 2013, Sonja achieved her dream of
running her first Comrades in June. She completed the gruelling 87 km in 11 hours 24 minutes.
Sonja is an inspiration and an example of what true grit and perseverance can accomplish. She
is determined to participate again next year and sends a big thank you to all her supporters who
believed in her.

KMSA sponsors run
The popular Gauteng-based Jackie Mekler
road race took place on May 4 2013 and
was sponsored by KMSA for the eighth
consecutive year.
The race has been organised since 1986 by the Pretoria
Military Marathon Club (PMMC) and comprises 25 and 10
kilometre routes, as well as a five kilometre fun run.
The event takes its name from Comrades marathon icon,
Jackie Mekler, heralded as one of only five people to have
won the Comrades marathon on five occasions and the first
to have made it to the finishing line in less than six hours.
“KMSA is proud to be associated with this prestigious
race, which has increased in popularity over the years,
attracting some of the top distance athletes in South Africa.
A total of 2 500 runners participated in this year’s event and,
judging from the positive feedback, it was a resounding
success,” says Ritchi Smith, marketing coordinator at KMSA.
This year, PMMC decided to donate a percentage of the
proceeds to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), based
on KMSA’s support of WWF’s African Rhino Programme and
the significant results it has produced in the fight against the
rhino-poaching crisis. Showing its commitment to continue
this social responsibility programme at future events, PMMC
depicted a rhino on the face of its fun run medal.

From fat to fit
The Virgin London marathon was Paul Gower’s first full marathon, which he
completed in 4 hours 54 minutes, finishing at about 23 000 out of 38 000
starters. The following story explains why this chief operating officer of
Seafood Holdings in the UK started running and lost 20kg.
“For the 2011 Bidvest Chairman’s dinner in Sandton, I had to rush across the road to the
shopping centre to buy some cufflinks. After climbing the steps to the mall, I bumped into a
colleague and I could barely speak to him, as I was so out of breath from being overweight
and unfit.
I vowed at that point that I would get fit. When I returned to the UK I engaged a personal
trainer and within six months I lost 20kg. Since then I have run four half marathons (21km)
with progressively improving times, most recently 1 hour 53 minutes.
Thank you to my generous sponsors, who helped raise £3 340 for the Royal National
Lifeboats Institution (RNLI). This UK sea rescue service is entirely funded by charity,
which fishing communities rely on. Visit www.rnli.org for more details.
