Winter has arrived in Johannesburg. Although
the temperatures are less than balmy the
days are crisp and the winter sun is incredibly
warming. We are so privileged to have the
weather we do in South Africa. Of course
Spring has arrived in Europe and I’m sure that
our Proudly Bidvest family there are all busily

planning their summer holidays! Enjoy and
travel safely.
Food, glorious food is something that most of us associate with home, family and
friends. And what an exciting industry. Our foodservice businesses continue to grow

in Bronkhorstspruit (page 42). ORT SA is one of the largest educational non-profit
organisations in South Africa and deals with literacy and numeracy in primary schools.
In partnership with Bidvest which started in 2007, literally thousands of children’s lives
have been changed as they are given a solid educational foundation. Read more
on page 16. Bidvest Freight has also helped turn around the matric pass rate at the
KwaHluzinqondo Secondary School; from a 33% pass rate in 2009 to an 87% pass
rate in 2013 (page 46). These stories are only a very small sample of the wonderful
interventions run by our people and our businesses.

Walk in their shoes
The Bidvest Unity walk will take place on Sunday
August 17 2014 with an expected participation of
38 000 walkers in Johannesburg, 13 000 in Durban,
9 500 in Cape Town and 4 000 in Port Elizabeth.
This mass participation 10 kilometre event of 64 500 participants
broke the world record last year and will probably break its own
record this year. You will be walking to make a difference to those
who cannot walk. Bidvest will be making a donation to a worthy
charity on behalf of everyone who participates in the walk.
Here are some handy tips for walkers:
 Avoid dehydration by stopping at the refreshment stations,
which are located every two kilometres on the route. You do
not need to bring your own refreshments.
 Wear something warm that you can tie around your waist.
 Remember to wear sunblock, a peak cap, comfortable
shoes and your race number.
 Children can be pushed in prams but no animals are
allowed.
There will be a children’s play area. Wristbands and food
vouchers will be given to the children but please make sure your
child has your cell number and take responsibility for dropping
them and fetching them.
We will provide a meal voucher, lots of entertainment and
prizes. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Bidvest’s world
gets bigger all the time
A lot of media attention has focused recently on Bidvest’s growth in the South African market and deservedly so.
This is understandable following the acquisition of our strategic stake in the pharmaceutical company Adcock Ingram and
the purchase of the services business Mvelaserve and the consumer appliance company, Home of Living Brands.
This constitutes significant growth in our domestic market.
But it’s as well to remember that Bidvest is an internationally diversified business and strategic
growth continues in many other markets across the world.
The Bidvest Foodservice division is the largest foodservice business outside North America.
It is active across five continents – Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and South America.
While Bidvest South Africa was securing sizeable growth in South Africa, sister companies in
the foodservice business have been pushing back the boundaries in markets all over the world.
These transactions may not be on the same scale as some of the recent South African deals,
but the long-term, cumulative effect is meaningful nonetheless.
In the last two years, the Bidvest brand has taken root in the Baltic republics of Lithuania,
Latvia and Estonia. At the other end of the European continent we have now established a
presence in Spain. Our latest acquisition is a foodservice provider to the hotel and tourism
industries in the south of the country as well as to Majorca and the Canary Islands.
Our first acquisition in South America – Deli Meals in Chile – has bedded in well and gives
us a vantage point from which to examine opportunities in Brazil.
Our growth ambitions don’t end there. We’ve also been active in the Middle East.
Last year we acquired the Aktaes food and beverage distributor, giving us entry into the fastgrowing Turkish market.
Our existing Middle East businesses – Horeca Trade in the UAE and Al Diyafa in Saudi Arabia
– have recently provided a platform for further growth in the region. We’ve now launched
foodservice operations in the Gulf States of Oman and Bahrain.
Further east, we continue to grow our footprint in mainland China.
You develop an insight into the international flavour of our business over there when you see
our Shenzhen operations supplying French cuisine to restaurants serving the emerging Chinese
middle class. Just across from the Chinese mainland, Angliss Hong Kong has established an

Bidvest has always believed diversity is strength. That’s why the Group has never insisted
that each and every business adopt a uniform approach. We’re flexible and entrepreneurial.

Food4 delivers mainly frozen, UK-sourced, food
from its main depot in south-eastern Spain,
near Alicante.
The business is headed by founder and MD, Jason Craig.
Jason admits to being a bit of a foodie and has recently
added fresh Spanish meat to the product range. Jason
says “we may be only 33 new joiners to the Proudly

91 000 square foot multi-temperature site is the largest in the company’s depot network and is
designed to support business growth.
The depot forms part of Bidvest’s 3663’s multi-million GBP infrastructure investment plans,
with the overall aim of delivering a more streamlined and efficient service for customers.
The state-of-the-art technology at the depot includes an upgraded telecommunications system,
as well as a fully integrated voice picking system, which will ensure consistent and accurate
customer ordering and efficiency. Motion-sensor lighting, vehicle telematics and a new fleet of
increased-capacity vehicles have been introduced to reduce carbon emissions.

support. Entertainment included a standup comedian as well as a photo booth set up for guests to capture

Amazing logistical feat
The relocation from Cocos Drive to Selkis Road in Bibra Lake
was an amazing logistical feat for Bidvest Foodservice.
As the largest distributor to the foodservice industry in Australia, this move
was widely acknowledged to be one of the smoothest branch moves ever.
“Everyone contributed to the move and we are now enjoying the fruits
of our labour,” said Lynne Minas. “The offices, kitchen and warehouse look
amazing and have proven to be very functional. A beneficial aspect of the
new premises is the fact that we have solar panelling: another positive move
by Bidvest to underpin our green credentials.”

The Italian food division of Angliss Hong Kong Food Service hosted a ‘Taste of Italy’ chef’s table on March 4 2014 for a group of
distinguished chefs and well-known personalities in the Food and Beverage industry.
The Italian food division brought a new and
exciting variety of Italian gourmet products to
Hong Kong, with Nunzio Rossi at the helm,
boasting 25 years of passion and expertise in
the food industry. The delectable menu featured
cold cuts, a cheese buffet, caviar, salad and
main courses of beef, hamburger and pork.

Bidair Cargo – animals’ best friend
While most may be familiar with Bidair Cargo’s primary business, not many people are aware of its
indispensable contribution to the welfare of rescue animals.
Bidair Cargo was established in 1996 to address domestic overnight freight needs in
South Africa. In 2011 Stephne Jackson of the Watershed Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation
Fund approached Bidair Cargo for assistance with transporting rescued animals. They
jumped at the opportunity and, for the past three years, have carried the cost to airlines of
approximately R250 000 per year for the space and weight taken up by the animals.
WARRF was established in 2010 to raise much-needed funding for sterilisation programmes and emergency medical care
for animals. Now, with the generosity of Bidair Cargo, when an animal needs to be removed from an abusive home or situation
and there is no home available locally, it is flown free of charge to a new home.
Bidair Cargo offers up to 20 free flights each month to rescue animals and will extend that offering if an emergency arises.
This partnership has been hugely successful and together they have changed the lives of over 1 250 rescue animals, as well
as those of their new families countrywide.

One dog that benefited enormously from this invaluable service is Prince.
While still living in Cape Town, Prince had been savagely attacked by a pack
of dogs when he was rescued by Stephne Jackson. She nursed him back to
health and circulated an email appealing for help and a new home for him.
Sharon Banner answered the call and arranged to see him when they were
in Cape Town. Within five minutes of meeting Prince, Sharon and her husband
Martin were smitten. Bidair Cargo flew him to Johannesburg where they met
him on arrival in the PetLounge at OR Tambo International Airport.

Last year, Waltons and Monami called on creative kids to enter the
Masterpiece art competition. Open to children between the ages of 6 and 16,
young South African artists were invited to enter a drawing or a sculpture that
incorporated the Waltons and Monami logos.
It was an opportunity to let imaginations run wild and hundreds of
entries were received nationwide. Winners were chosen by a panel of
Waltons staff and prizes included Samsung

Waltons has opened two new branches in
Cape Town, the N1 City branch at the N1 City Mall
and the Tableview branch.
N1 City’s brand manager Shannon Savage worked previously as a branch administrator at the
Stellenbosch branch. “The customers at the N1 City Mall are really excited to have Waltons in the
area,” says Shannon. “Judging by the customers’ excitement, the store will be a great success.”

Waltons has expanded its digital services to offer customers a one-stop office supplies hub
with online purchasing and integration with enterprise procurement systems.
“With 65 years in the stationery and office supplies business, we aim to increase our digital
offering for greater convenience,” says Vincent Bellingham, e-business manager. “Waltons
was one of South Africa’s e-commerce pioneers, offering online purchasing 14 years ago.”
The online procurement functionality is a customised version of the Bidvest Direct procurement system developed by BluePepper, the e-commerce development
division of Bidvest New Zealand.
Waltons’ clients can now register on eLine to make one-stop purchases of stationery, office furniture and consumables, office catering and hygiene supplies and a
range of electronic goods. The system interfaces with major enterprise systems to enable seamless ordering, authorisation and invoicing. The move to eLine will be
promoted through a roadshow and staff training and is supported by a relaunched website, upgraded warehouses and improved logistics support, says Vincent.
Aiming to register around 3 000 clients on eLine in the next year, Waltons’ online service is backed by a nationwide retail footprint. “E-commerce is showing strong
growth in South Africa, but the days of physical stores are not over,” says Vincent. “In future, retail stores may become more of a showroom than a point of purchase,
but we have a long way to go before South Africa moves completely from bricks to online.”

Bidvest Panalpina Logistics has achieved a gold award in PMR Africa’s
annual survey on freight forwarders. BPL scored 4.12 out of a possible
5 in the independent survey, up from 4.11 the previous year. While this

invade previously pristine areas or ecological niches. In layman’s
terms they are weeds in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
He says they are usually vigorous growers, making them

invaders are tough and can withstand unfavourable conditions.
They spread easily and are difficult to control, producing an
abundance of fertile seeds with efficient methods of dispersal.
Dominant alien species can be divided into three
categories:
Category 1 – declared weeds
These are prohibited plants, which must be controlled or
eradicated. They serve no economic purpose and possess
characteristics that are harmful to humans, animals and the
environment. These plants may not be planted, transported
or allowed to disperse. Trade in their seeds, cuttings, or other
propagative material is prohibited.
Category 2 – declared invader plants with a value
These invaders have certain positive qualities, such as
commercial use, animal fodder or soil stabilisation. They are
allowed in demarcated areas under controlled conditions
and in bio-control reserves.
Category 3 – mostly ornamental plants
These plants are undesirable because they have the potential
to become invasive. No further planting is allowed except
with special permission, nor is trade in propagative material
allowed. Existing plants can remain, but must be prevented from
spreading.

At the McCarthy Marathon
On February 1 2014, Bidvest Prestige
Cleaning’s projects division got ready to
welcome thousands of runners to the
McCarthy 5km, 10km and 21km race.
Preparations for the race began as early as January,
with sponsors and organisers meeting to ensure all
stakeholders knew what was required of them.
The day began at 03:00 for the team, collecting
staff and setting up the 18km drinks station.
At 06:30 it was all systems go with the ice, water
and cold drinks in check. Towards the beginning
of the race only a handful of runners made their
way past the station but two hours later, hundreds
of participants ran past and were given cold drinks
and encouragement to give it their all for the last
3km. The last groups of runners showed up a
little after 09:00 and were greeted with the same
enthusiasm.
The projects division received a lot of praise
from runners and the organising committee for its
professionalism and enthusiasm at the water point.
Thank you to the managers, supervisors and staff,
who sacrificed sleep and volunteered their time.

Crown lends a
helping hand
Crown National’s gifts to clients for their loyal support took on
new meaning last year when the company decided to give
something back to the people who need it most.
Dawid Muller, commercial and marketing executive at Crown
National, explains, “We asked our customers to SMS a keyword
to us and for every SMS received we donated an amount to
charity.”
Solidarity Helping Hand was the chosen charity. Founded in
1949 in response to the poverty crisis after the Second World
War, there are around 26 000 monthly debit donations, with no
government assistance for this non-profit organisation.

Enjoy Khayelitsha Cookies
Since meeting Khayelitsha Cookies at a trade show four years
ago, Bidvest Premier Lounge has become a key customer for
this business. Khayelitsha Cookies provides work for unemployed
women, which, in turn, enables them to provide for their families.
The delicious cookies, rusks and brownies can be found in Bidvest Premier
Lounges nationwide.
In December 2013 Bidvest Premier Lounge came to the rescue, partnering
with Khayelitsha Cookies by sourcing equipment for their business.
The first item was a 16 pan push trolley oven to increase productivity and
eliminate bottlenecks, as well as alleviate muscle pains experienced by the
women when loading and unloading over 400 pans each daily. The new oven
has increased capacity by an estimated 20 000 cookies per day and is more
user-friendly.
The second item, a best-before-date printer with automated counter, prints all
the packaging and inner cartons, as well as counts the cookies. The new printer
will save the company R48 000 annually in labour, which they can put to better
use in the drive to keep their cookies competitively priced.
An additional 100 pans were also sponsored to cater for the increased capacity
in ovens and to replace old pans.
The fourth purchase was 50 Teflon baking sheets, which are used for baking
the rusks and biscotti.
Bidvest Premier Lounge is confident that the items and equipment bought for
Khayelitsha Cookies will significantly help them become sustainable and grow from
strength to strength.

Funds raised from the tyre flip go to Toys for Africa. “The number of children
who have received a new toy from Toys for Africa has surpassed the 100 000
mark. It is the charitable organisation’s goal to give a new toy
to every underprivileged child in South Africa,” says Chris.
Chris is no stranger to the suffering of children, having
grown up without parents. “Kids are close to my heart
and I love to see the smiles on their faces when they receive
something. I feel good to enrich these children, who did
not ask to be in the positions they are in. Our kids are our
future and we need to start somewhere to make a change,”
he says.
McCarthy Ford and Mazda Silverlakes are committed
to the surrounding communities. On February 7 2014 the
company handed out pencils to the 450 pupils of Nuwe Hoop
School and also gave a motivational talk. Working with Toys
for Africa, Chris and colleagues also participated in a gift and

Actions speak louder
than words
There are often many excuses why something cannot be done
and too few reasons why something can and should be done.
In 2012, Bidvest TMS became involved with a local initiative, Olievenhoutbosch
Disability Organisation. Together with Dinah Sekese, founder and manager of
ODO, TMS assisted in adding quality and comfort to the lives of the 20 disabled
adults and children who take shelter and refuge at the centre.
As the mother of a disabled child who sadly passed away at a very young age,
Dinah realised the need for such an organisation within her community and began
to make it happen.

Langwe is a promising young winger who was
promoted from the club’s academy. This season
he has been utilised mainly as a substitute from the
bench, but the faith that head coach Gavin Hunt has
in Langwe is obvious. He has been tipped to replace
the club’s previous wing wonder, Sifiso Myeni, who has
since settled at Orlando Pirates. By the end of March,
Langwe had featured a total of 10 times for the Clever
Boys in the league and his value as an impact player off
the bench has become highly respected.
The 19-year-old defender is a versatile player who
can be used at fullback or in the heart of defence.
