POSTMASTER: Send address changes to: And All That Jazz, 2787 Del Monte St., West Sacramento, CA 95691-3811. by Greg Willett F irst off, thanks to everyone who had a hand in making the 2010 Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee a success. I took notice of everyone’s commitment and passion over the course of the event and truly appreciate each person for their time and individual efforts. If you don’t hear it often enough, let me say outright: thank you, thank you, thank you! We can’t present such a large-scale event without your support. The staff in the STJS Office is making a concerted effort this year to meet with each of the managers from the Festival & Jubilee. We’re trying not to let too much time pass so that when we meet, thoughts are still fresh in everyone’s mind. And we want all thoughts: what worked best this year, what didn’t work, how can we improve for next year’s event? If you’d like to share your thoughts, and we haven’t yet had an opportunity to meet, please call the office @ (916) 372-5277 to schedule a mutually agreeable time. We’ve already learned some important ways that we can improve the event for next year, and look forward to learning more. Thanks again! Corporate support in the form of SUMMARY The Sac. Trad. Jazz Society is a non-profit organization established under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for the purpose of educating the public and members on matters concerning the preservation and promotion of traditional jazz music and the study and play of musical instruments associated with traditional jazz music. “JAZZ SUNDAY” “Jazz Sunday” is held monthly, typically the 2nd Sunday, at the Dante Club: 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sac., CA. This official meeting is open to all members of the STJS and their guests; the general public is also welcome. ADMISSION Admission to “Jazz Sunday” is by donation of $8 for members, $12 for non-members. Persons under 12 are admitted free. Youth 12-20 (members) $5, youth 12-20 (non-members) $7. We especially encourage attendance by music students. GOLD CARD AUDITIONS Auditions are held 3 times per year: Feb., June, & Oct. at 11 am prior to “Jazz Sunday.” Applications are available from the Gold Card Coordinator, to be completed one month before the audition. Call 372-5277 for details. STJS SPONSORSHIPS DIRECTOR sponsorship is an essential ingredient in making our festival a success. As you can imagine, the folks that make the decision as to whether or not to support our event want to know exactly who attends the Festival & Jubilee. In order to justify their support, especially in a stressful, economic environment, they want to know the specifics, e.g. “How old are these Festival goers?” “How much education have these folks had?” “Where do they live?” We’ve been challenged in recent years to be able to paint an exact picture of our audience to potential sponsors. In order to accurately get the information, we’ve implemented a two-step plan: (1) we made a concerted effort to survey information at the 2010 Jazz Festival & Jubilee. Special thanks to Patricia and Brian Schmeltz for their tireless help in compiling the information. (2) We’re still in need of additional information from as many people as we can get! To that end, we’ve created an online survey accessible from a link on the website: sacjazz.com (“Newsroom” section); also at sacjazz.org in the right-hand column). President’s Message by Tom Duff STJS PRESIDENT I t gives me great pleasure to announce that the 37th annual .Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee was a tremendous success. By every measure you pulled off the impossible. The festival grew at a time when festivals all around the country were failing. A big thanks to the musicians, sponsors, volunteers, members and staff whose hard work made this event a reality. Planning has already started for the 38th Festival and it promises to be even better yet. Our talent committee is busy selecting the absolute best bands we can find, and I am sure that you will be pleased with their choices. Our goal is to make each and every festival unique and fresh, and of course, increase our attendance. This year, you will see new and exciting benefits being a member of the Jazz Society, and improvements to the ones that you enjoy. Mr Ringwald has brought a stellar lineup for Jazz Sunday, including The Professors in Aug. and many more to follow. I also hope you enjoyed the concerts featuring the Jazz Camp students on July 31st and August 7th. 2011 Festival clarification Last month, we mentioned some of the bands who have already been invited to the 2011 Sac. Jazz Festival & Jubilee. Some folks were concerned that their favorite bands weren’t invited if their names weren’t on that short list of 10 initial bands. We didn’t mean to startle anyone; just wanted to get them excited by revealing some names we haven’t seen here in a while. As previously stated, there are “many more to be announced!” Periodically over the next several months, as more bands have been contacted and contracted, we will announce their names, too. So stay tuned and mark that date on your calendar: May 27-30, 2011 (Memorial Day Wknd.). 2 STJS welcomes new Patron Members: Dola Albusche Marcia Palmer Kevin & Janey Kaster Alyce & John David & Julia McAfee Shutzbaugh Christopher Morris Mary Stewart August 2010 Don’t forget to come out to the ballpark and support STJS and your Sacramento River Cats and on Thursday, Aug 19 at Raley Field in West Sacramento. I very much value our partnership with the River Cats and thank them for their sponsorship. This will be a very fun event and I hope you can attend. See the Sacramento River Cats vs. Iowa Cubs. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the STJS Office. It’s not too late to get your tickets for the Northern California appearance of Allen Goodman’s Desert Cities Jazz Band featuring Debby Boone and Hal Linden on August 28. This will be a fundraiser for STJS Jazz Camps. Tickets are on sale now at the jazz office or online. Advance tickets for STJS members are $40 each; tickets at the door will be $50. This is one not to miss, so purchase your tickets today and save $10. With the new board you can expect some very exciting changes. We are working hard to improve the Society. Please provide your input by taking the 2010 Sac. Jazz Fest. & Jubilee ONLINE SURVEY at www.sacjazz.org (far right column). While you are on that site, you can read the latest “AATJ” newsletter (in PDF format) and find some previous issues as well. If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to sign-up for the e-newsletter. The e-newsletter is sent periodically with details of upcoming STJS events, and it’s a great way to get jazz information sent directly to your e-mail inbox. We welcome your input and will strive to make this year the best the Jazz Society has ever had. 2 By RON NABITY By JAMES GREGORY May 28-31, 2010 PHOTOS by NANCY GIFFIN unless otherwise noted Sac. Sunday evenings from 6 – 8pm Katie Cavera with cast of “Looking for Josephine” starring Nicolle “La” Rochelle (center) Katie Cavera (cont.) In 2006, she was selected to play guitar and tenor banjo in the Jerome Savary production of “Looking for Josephine,” a musical about New Orleans jazz, Hurricane Katrina, and Josephine Baker. The musical premiered at the Opera Comique in Paris, France in the fall of 2006 and returned for an encore presentation in the spring of 2007. The show was nominated for a Molière Award (the national theatre award of France bestowed by APAT, the Association Professionnelle et Artistique du Théâtre) and has toured extensively through France and Spain. In 2009, the show toured Austria and Germany and had it’s American premiere in Montclaire, New Jersey. Read more about the show in Katie’s own words; visit www.riverwalkjazz.org/ and search for “Josephine Conquers Europe.” Katie teaches banjo and guitar at the Adult Jazz Camp for America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society. She is a member of ASCAP and recently released a CD titled “Who’s Foolin’ Who?” that mixes ‘20s hot jazz and ‘30s swing with her own original compositions. One should also visit her YouTube channel to see her creativity expressed in film clips. (I love the traveling sock monkey!) www.youtube.com/kcavera “Katie is a wonderful recent addition to the jazz world. She loves what she does, and she makes everyone feel good about playing music with her. She’s a timekeeper with a heartbeat sound.”– Ray Skjelbred “If a band can’t play by your time, it can’t play!”– Drummer Hal Smith DATE COUNCILMEMBER PARK NAME — ADDRESS / BAND (style) 9/19 Ray Tretheway–D1 9/26 Lauren Hammond–D5 J. Many wondered why STJS would like to have e-mail addresses for all members. Though not required, we strongly encourage you to sign-up, either at Jazz Sunday or online at www.sacjazz.org (via a link for e-news in right column). All who sign up will receive our periodic e-blasts (e-mails) with the latest STJS news plus dates and details of our events. It’s a great way to stay informed, and it saves money and paper by reducing costly printed mailers. Did you know that you can access the STJS newsletter via the Internet (“the Web”)? One can read current and past issues of “AATJ” by visiting the STJS website at www.sacjazz.org and clicking the “AATJ” link in the left column. Since the files are in PDF (Portable Document Format), you will need Adobe Reader to open them. This software application is FREE and available for download from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ In the future, when the newsletter moves away from paper and is available solely online (“on the Web”), an e-blast will let you know when the latest issue is available. This will be discussed further in coming months, outlining the pros and cons of paper vs. online newsletters. Our new president, Tom Duff, and others will be offering classes related to computers and the internet for those who need help getting started. 2 STJS Fundraisers Info at (916) 372-5277 or www.sacjazz.org “You play a nice banjo!” – Tony/Emmy award-winning actress Nell Carter “She can really play what we call the blues.” – Bassist Eugene Wright (“Time Out,” the Dave Brubeck Quartet) Aug. 19, 2010 SAC JAZZ Night at the River Cats “I knew of Katie Cavera as a fine rhythm guitarist and a charming, unaffected singer, but I didn’t know that she was such an adept film maker.” – Michael Steinman, “Jazz Lives” Blog 2 Aug. 28, 2010 DESERT CITIES Jazz Band with Debby Boone & Hal Linden August 2010 Dante Club Notes By “The Cricket” [who is NOT the AATJ editor] S UPER Jazz Sunday in July! Our 3rd annual Parade of .Bands: twelve organized bands and three jam sets—and every one of them swung like crazy! As Parades of Bands go, this one went really well (mostly). From gypsy jazz (RedSkunk) and ragtime (Porcupine), to big band swing (Ernie Bucio) and straight-ahead trad (Au Brothers), from young (Stray Cats, Jazz Raptors and Take 2) to old (sorry, Charlie/ Dr. Bach), from combo (Miss Margie) to fill-the-stage (Sacramento Youth Band Jazz Band) and even “famous” (Original Senn has appeared on “A Prairie Home Companion”) to local and quirky (New Lowdown is definitely doing its own trad-based thing), we covered it all. The only stumble was a miscommunication that delivered Dutch’s Gramercy 6 late to the party. (Personally, I missed them at Jubilee, so I was looking forward to hearing them here.) But even some of the 6 jammed in the Tailgate later on, and Edd Burhans (covering for Paula for the day) scurried around and gathered up some excellent jammers to fill the hole in the schedule. Jack Boczar—he joined just before Jazz Festival this year—was blown away by RedSkunk. He said he’s an “old reed player,” but now he’s going’ to pick it up again. He was also impressed by Elliot Adams’ piano playing with Porcupine Ragtime Ensemble. Possibly Porcupine’s most obscure tune was “Castle Doggie,” or maybe “Singing in the Bathtub,” which Jim Spero identified even before the band announced it. (Now how would he know that?) Bev Eggers was listening to daughter-in-law Virginia Tichenor on drums. Bev’s sister-in-law, Carol Lehman, is just in from Colorado. She and her husband, Bill, have been trading off support duties while Bev gets her strength back from chemo. Bill Schoening’s right-hand-person, Bobbie Littlefield, was enjoying all the groups. Tim and Dianne Dithridge told me they are longtime members. Member Fran Sabato brought hubby John Pope to the Parade. Sally Finch looked like she was having a great time in spite of the complicated back brace. She said she was pruning trees June 1 on a 6-foot ladder and leaned just-that-much too far. She has another few weeks till the spinal fractures are healed; said she misses being able to dance. JULY 11th JAZZ SUNDAY — PARADE OF BANDS Ken Champion, Carl Warmdahl, dr Bob Gonzalez Original Senn Jazz Band Michele Richardson The musical Kreis family Ernie Bucio’s Little Big Band Dannie Balser Jeff Nancy Tim Take 2, directed by Nancy Kreis August 2010 Since I last spoke to Sharon Johnson, she got married (May 19), but she was having a day out with the girls (Anne Louis from Tracy, Wendy Porter from Stockton, and Kathy Moreira from Lodi). They said they were having a wonderful time—especially liked hearing the young new musicians. Congrats, Sharon! Poffinbarger, Jimmy Spero, Emma Simpson, Karl Munz, Edd Burhans, Harry Duvall, and Jim Fusaro. And a big thank you to Joanne Luethy. She and granddaughter Sue Luethy volunteered to deploy the flyers before the music started. Big help. Joanne and Chuck Luethy have been members for quite a while; Sue used to attend a lot but has been pretty busy with school (ARC), so the rearrangement of the lobby was a big surprise for her. Celia Cottle has herded the Stray Cats—Sam Theg, Bryce Korte, Evan Hamaguci, Scott Yamamoto, Nick Ehnat, Emma Maul and Dew Thomsen—into a fine ensemble. Likewise, Polly Edgerton for the Jazz Raptors—Michaela Bunker, Brianna Maxwell, Zachery Maxwell, Michael Fifu, Nick Zartman, Irwin Leschinskiy, Caylor Kimkenborg, Jared Wheeler, Matt Cantwell and David Yasinskiy. And further likewise, Nancy Kreis for Take 2—Jackson Levin, Tim Kreis, Maddy Pringle, Lindsay Russell, Matthew Seno, Christian Goodbrake and Leah Carroll. We all know that a Jazz Festival appearance here and there would not sustain the youth bands without the dedication of School Music Teachers all over the country, and we’re fortunate to have more than our share here in Sacramento. You can add Felicia Greenwood to the list—oh, and Nahum Zdybel with TNT. THANK YOU, TEACHERS! (cont. on page 11) Sacramento Youth Band was here in March, and returned to lead off this month on Main Stage. Led by Stephen Bingen, they explore various jazz styles with gusto! Two of their players, Emma Simpson and Nolan Cyr, showed up to jam in the Tailgate, as did Jazz Raptor Thomas Edgerton. Tailgate Tsar-for-the-Day Tony Bellacera shared the drum duties with Dan Lobay, Carl Warmdahl and Susan Phillips. Also in the Tailgate that day: Ken Champion, Jim Price, Bob Gonzalez, Dick Lockwood, Gene Mondro, Adriana Link, Merv Graham, Rich O’Day, Frank Lindskoog, Billie Menz, Ned Various people reported that the Stray Cats (erstwhile J Street Jazz Cats) were really good. And the Jazz Raptors were really good. And Take 2 were really good. And—guess what—they were right! Mardi Gras Lite Ike Harris grateful for community support In May 2010, torrential downpours flooded Nashville, TN, causing Ike Harris and his family to be displaced from their home there. Ike and his wife were out of town when the flood came. When they returned, all was lost, including Ike’s basses and his wife’s piano. Flood insurance was not available in this area, so Ike and his family have to face starting over. 10 I N C O N C E R T Wed., Sept. 1, 2010 • 7:30 pm Claudette Stone & Dick Johnson Featuring Claudette Stone with Dick Johnson, Tom Shove, Mickey Bennett, John Armato @ Wine and Roses Hotel 2505 West Turner Rd. • Lodi, CA 95242 Tickets: $30 & $35 August 2010 JULY PARASOL WINNER Dante Club Notes (cont.) Peter Kentz with Don and Jan, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G! Don’t we feel like quite the matchmaking service? Members Don Luthringer and pianist Jan Blucher have been keeping company since they first met—6 dates in 8 days and counting! Molly Reeves of RedSkunk Jipzee Swing Band John Cocuzzi was on drums with Miss Margie & the Hot Five, but traded the drum throne for the piano bench to team up with Margie Ruiz on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “If I Loved You.” Gorgeous song, gorgeous piano, gorgeous vocals. And Ernie Bucio had two gorgeous vocalists: Erica Handy and Michele Richardson. When Michelle started Billie Holiday’s “My Man Don’t Love Me...” Arlene Pollett pulled Peter Kurtz out onto the dance floor and told him, “We can slink to this.” What a great phrase! The Little Big Band dedicated their last number to their mentor, the late Deck Hogin. I tried to pair up Sue Meyers with Red Finnegard (he worked at Sheraton during Jazz Fest). They both disclaimed the relationship. Sue said she was there with husband Ken, and Red was with Jean Alley. He said (you’ll figure out which is which), “Blondes are noticed, but redheads are never forgotten.” June Athey brought her “grand-neighbors,” elementary grade students Cami and Isabel. Cami just switched from piano to drums, and Isabel picked guitar over piano. Martha Luke from Citrus Heights said she just renewed her two-year membership. Member Judy Pace brought friend Joe Cramer, who said he used to be a member—20 years ago. It’s been 510 years since he was here last; he lives in SoCal in the winter. Okay, we’ll share. (They have jazz societies down there, too!) Carol Tompkins said she was invited to attend 2 or 3 years ago at one of our “outreach events”—Jazz in the Park or maybe the Library Series. She finally got here and didn’t much care for the first band she heard, so she moved to another room—and loved it! Especially Justin Au, Jimmy Spero, Miss Margie. See—we aims to please everybody! Some sponsor packages even include perks for the sponsors. Total cost will range from $500 to $1000 depending on the performers and their travel needs. (See the July 2010 “AATJ” with details and a photo on page 14.) That prompted the question: What other longtime performers we’ve been honored to showcase at our annual event? Did you know that, according to our programs (I have a copy of at least one program for all 37 festivals), a total of 1073 separate bands or featured musicians have appeared in Sacramento during Memorial Day Weekend since 1974! This does not include the thousands of individual men and women who have performed with these bands, but still... isn’t that an amazing number! The performer list runs from the Abalone Stompers (1975) to the Zydeco Hot Peppers (first appearance in 1996), and includes such unusual band names as: Six Friars and a Monk from Elm Grove, Wisconsin (1991); Happy Bottom Riding Academy of Chicago (1989); Bull Moose Party Band of LA (1979); and the Bathtub Gin Party Band of Bellingham, Washington (1985). Some performers have appeared at our festival from the very first event in 1974 to now. Fulton Street Jazz Band, currently led by Board Member Bob Ringwald, has played in every single event. Bob was the leader of Fulton Street JB in 1974, and daughter Molly Ringwald sang at our very first Jubilee. She was so small that she had to stand on her dad’s piano bench to be seen. Molly, as you all know, appeared as a featured performer at this year’s festival. Dutch Deutsch has played every festival but under two different band names (Dutch’s Gas House Gang and Gramercy Six). Jill Harper says that Natural Gas Jazz Band has played 36 of our festivals! Jim Maihack has also been at all but one (the 1975 Jubilee) with many different bands. Bill Allred (1998 Emperor) has appeared many times, and in fact, first performed in 1974 as a featured guest with Fulton Street JB. Our current executive director, Jill Harper, performed in 1974 as a member of the River Bank Jazz Band, and Sugar Willie, a longtime Sacramento area fixture, also appeared at that first event (but later moved out of the area for many years). Our Artistic Director, John Cocuzzi (who first played our festival in 1989 on vibes for Hot Jazz with Harry Allen) and the Talent Selection Committee, led by Jim Roberson, have already invited 10 bands to perform in 2011, some with musicians who have never appeared in our events, so the list of thousands that have played our festival will just keep growing and growing. Sacramento has been blessed with the opportunity to hear so many great musicians over the years. 2 14 August 2010 Honor for Capital Focus T JYBF clinician, lecturer, and adjudicator Dave Robinson took his Capital Focus Jazz Band (youth group) to St. Louis where they had the honor of performing the opening concert for the 1st annual JEN Conference. Dave’s band wowed everyone at our youth band festival a few years ago. The Jazz Educators Network (JEN) received hundreds of applications for performances and clinics at this inaugural JEN Conference, which drew nearly 1200 attendees. JEN organizers selected Dave’s group as part of the conference program. His band’s traditional jazz presentation came at a crucial time when JEN members still remembered the interest generated by the Jim Cullum Band’s ground-breaking performance the year before at the former IAJE conference. For the last five years, TJYBF Coordinator Yvonne Au has been nagging trad jazz youth band directors on the West Coast to please apply, so she is glad that Dave finally stepped up and did so. Capital Focus Jazz Band (CFJB), opened the conference with—what else—“St. Louis Blues,” then proceeded through another eight tunes. The whole band received many accolades throughout the conference for their performance. Many people said, “What a great way to start the conference!” Following their performance, Dave whisked them away by bus for a tour of the Scott Joplin House. Then the bus took them to a barbecue joint outside of town called the Highway 61 Roadhouse. The St. Louis BandJos (youth banjo band) played a set, followed by a few sets by CFJB. The house was full and the crowd loved it. The next day, Dave presented a workshop on the youth movement in trad jazz and how educators can form and operate such a group within their programs, including a preview of the DVD in his prototype Traditonal Jazz Curriculum Kit. The audience included Jim Jones of AFJS, trumpeter Mike Vax, and Steve Call, director of the BYU Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band. Dave got very positive feedback on this session. Overall, his band’s performance was very well-received, and he certainly deserves recognition for a job well-done! The 2011 JEN Conference will be in New Orleans, so we hope trad jazz will be well represented!
