Working on a traffic-reduction project in Sierra Vista, Arizona, NuStats came to AirSage with a request for data that would 1) augment and 2) validate data that had been gathered using a traditional travel study. The project, which was led by Lucia Lanini, sought to identify high-volume corridors (Origin-Destination pairs), and specifically, commute travel extending beyond the city-specific boundaries to include the Fort Huachuca military base, and surrounding metropolitan areas including Tucson and Bisbee. Capturing regional data like this has, historically, required expensive and time-consuming long-distance travel surveys. For this project, AirSage provided NuStats with one month of population analytics (provided for the same month as NuStats travel survey, thus facilitating a direct “apples to apples” comparison), that included regional commute data across 6,084 geographic zones between Tucson and Sierra Vista, Arizona. “Smaller, regional travel surveys allow us to collect all of that interesting demographic information that modelers require; we found that by augmenting travel survey data with AirSage OD data, we could validate our data and provide our clients with a more comprehensive regional picture of travel behavior.” said Lucia Lanini, NuStats LLC. RESULTS In lieu of conducting an expensive long-distance survey, NuStats was able to validate their travel survey data and expand on conclusions about regional commute patterns with AirSage mobile device insights in a shorter amount of time, with reduced costs and using less resources. “The data saved manpower. The data collection team initially included 20-60 collectors and that manpower wasn’t needed with AirSage data. When we got that, we were able to reduce the team to just a handful of data analysts and GIS specialists.” AirSage also provided NuStats with a consulting session that provided detailed analysis of the data.
