How Did That
Happen? Felt like
the season only
started yesterday!!!
Presidents Report
The final week of training is upon us with the head of the river
regatta this weekend.
It has been great to see the level of training and commitment
by all the rowers, in particular the senior crews who have
juggled training around their exams for the past two weeks.
Although I think some have enjoyed the luxury of the afternoon sessions.
Congratulations to all rowers for a great season
so far and I look forward to a fantastic final
regatta followed by the head of river dinner in
the evening.
See you at Champion Lakes!
Regards Frances
Keith’s Corner
But it is still almost and that is the hard bit.
We have tapered this week to rest you up so you will
feel fresh and raring to go on Saturday. The hard work is done and all we need to do is
race.
You will have your coaches, your friends, your family and other rowers telling you what
must be done in the race. And it will be a very hard race because everyone will be out for a
win.
So put yourself into a
good positive frame of mind before the
race starts.
Sleep well.
Eat well.
Drink lots.
with bag packed the night before.
Take care of yourself and other members of the boatshed.
Be positive whilst still knowing its going to be hard.
Talk yourself up.
One of the best exponents of talk was
Muhammad Ali :I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled
with a whale, handcuffed lighting, thrown
lighting into jail, only last week I murdered a
rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick, I’m so
mean I make medicine sick.
OK wrestle and tussle but no murdering!!!
So good luck girls.
Enjoy the day. Race well. Make yourself proud.
You know that we all are so very proud of you all already.
One of my favorite Rowing poems is “A Racing Eight” by James L. Cuthbertson. This is the
last stanza.
A racing eight and no man late,
And all hearts in the boat;
The men who work and never shirk,
Who long to be afloat.
The crew who burn from stem to stern
To win the foremost place,
The crew to row, the boat to go
The eight to win the race.
Thank you all for a
the shed.

fantastic season and for creating a great family of rowing down at
Captains of Boat
Suzie Polomka & Tanya Brits
WOW congratulations girls! You have officially (nearly) made it
through the 2016 Rowing season. With Head of River so close I want
you all to take a minute and appreciate everyone who has helped
you get through this season. Your coaches, your crew, Keith, the
squad and your parents. Without all these people the season and
the success wouldn't have been possible.
We are the strongest and fittest we have been all season and I hope
you are all excited for the challenge that is your last races of 2016. For the year 12s your
last races as Penrhosians.
Give it your all in your races and leave nothing in the tank! We will be proud no matter the
outcome as long as we know you gave everything you could.
For the year 9s enjoy your first Head of the River regatta as the day will fly past so quickly
and you'll be left with such fond memories.
Good luck to all crews and let's make sure we are the loudest squad cheering for our team
mates. We all know how that little bit of extra support from the shoreline can go a long way
in the last 250 meters of the race. Thanks so much for the amazing year girls and best of
luck for the 2017 season.
Lots of love Suzie
Hey girls,
So this is it; the final week of rowing....I know we're all sad that this painful sport we all
love so much is coming to an end. So while you have the chance, enjoy every single minute
of this week. Enjoy the last week of early mornings, the last week of rowing with your crew
and just embrace every single minute you have left because it may not seem like it now, but
next week, you will miss everything about it.
We have one week left to give rowing everything we have so embrace it, enjoy it and give
110% for this last week.
For some of us it may be our first Head of the River, but for those who've done it before
knows that the atmosphere is amazing and there's always a lot of people there to support
you. Everyone has the potential to smash the other crews in their races and to do extremely
well; you just have to be confident and believe in yourself.
If your nervous before your race just remember that everyone else in all the other boats are
just as nervous as you are, and don't forget to breathe!
Good luck girls Love Tans xx
Pia Brown – Year 9
Hey Girls
Good Job on another great regatta.
The 8A girls came second, 8B third and 8C fourth. Then in
the quads, 9B first, C and D third, and the freshman A and
B fourth. 9A girls, fingers crossed we aren't in a lane near
PLC at the next regatta.
One week to go, let's keep training really hard to maintain
these results for the Head Of The River, or hopefully even
improve.
THE BEGINNING IS ALWAYS TOUGH, BUT ONCE WE ARE
IN IT WE BECOME UNSTOPPABLE.
Looking forward to celebrating our first rowing season together at the HOR dinner on
Saturday night 25 June.
Go PENRHOS! Pia

Elena Priest - Year 10
Hey girls,
Can you believe head of the river is here?! Everyone
in the shed has been training so hard and I am so
proud of you all. Those hours of training that we
have done has brought you all so far and I can’t
wait to see what we can do together on Saturday.
Remember to continue striving for the highest so
that you can reach your full potential and most
importantly have an amazing day with your crew and the squad! Continue to push 110% in
your race and empty the tank. I believe that you can all achieve whatever you put your
mind to no matter how hard it might be. So girls you’re all incredible, just go out there and
do what you know best, you have the full support from the school, the parents and the
squad. Good luck for your races and just be savage.
Love Elena xx

Enthusiast?? You will want to
know about this opportunity
if you are one or know one!!!!
This is your opportunity to go on a train ride on one of the longest & heaviest
trains in the world. You need to make your own way to the Pilbara to enjoy
this amazing experience.
Some Train Specifics:
Engine Size and Type Depends on which
train however both are 4400 Horsepower
V16- GE Dash 9 / V12-GE Evolution
Loco weighs 200 tonne
18,000 litres fuel
The length depends on the no of wagons
which can vary from trip to trip
Two types leave from Cape Lambert
Older “J”(goes to Pannawonica) 167 single
cars. They are about 40 yrs old. Dumper
tips one at a time- Has two locos pulling
it. Loaded weighs about - 26 000 Tonne
Other (Yandi) goes out to Tom Price etc
236 cars. They are a married up pair and
dump two at a time. Each car is about 10
mtrs.
So the Yandi is about 2.5km long
including the three locos used to pull it.
Loaded weighs 32 000 Tonne
What speeds can the train get up to?
That depends on the track speed.
There can be restrictions all along
the rail network. But max track
speed is 80km.
