Toledo Builds Wieting
It was a gala occasion when the curtains rose for the first time at
the Wieting Opera House. It was September 12, 1912, and a capacity house, all dressed in their finest, filled the auditorium and the
“boxes.”
Verdi’s “II Trovatore” was the very first show in the new
$20,000 opera house, starring Joseph F. Sheehan, considered
“America’s greatest tenor.” In addition to the cast of 14, there was
a chorus of 36, a special grand opera orchestra, a harpist, Mrs.
Emily Gray from England, and Miss Sibley Remus, violinist.
As a prelude to the opera, Mrs. P. G. Wieting was introduced by
H. J. Stiger. Mrs. Wieting was giving the new theatre to the people
of Toledo. She wore a lovely gown, a gift from her husband. She
had worn it only once before at the dedication of a theatre in
Syracuse, New York, which she had also given to that community.

The donor plaque above the front door proclaims: “This playhouse was built in the year A. D. 1912, by Ella W. Wieting as a
memorial to her husband, Philip G. Wieting, and dedicated to our
many friends in the town where we so long abode.”

A Brief Timeline of the
Wieting Opera House
1867- In the spring, Dr.
and Mrs. P. G. Wieting
moved to Toledo.
1878- Toledo City Bank is
established.
1906- Dr. Wieting died on
February 12th.
1912- The Wieting Opera
House was completed for
a cost of $20,000. The
Original Trustees of the
Wieting Opera Company
were: Ella W. Wieting, W.
A. Dexter, P.K. Rebok, J.
G. Wieting, J. F. Yothers,
H. J. Stiger. The Grand
Opening was on
September 12th presenting
the opera “II TROVATORE”.
1913 -Guy Wieting, the
manager, booked silent
movies with piano accompaniment.

then for seven years was an abstractor. In
1878, together with his father-in-law, N. H.
Wilder, he organized the Toledo City Bank,
later called the Toledo State Bank and then
First National Bank.
In about 1897, the Wietings moved to
Syracuse, New York, where he prospered
with a relative in a manufacturing concern
and amassed quite a fortune. He died
February 12, l906, in Daytona, Florida,
where they spent winters. He was still a
director of the Toledo Bank. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Wieting gave generously
to worthy causes, including memorial the-
atres: one in Worcester, New York;
Syracuse, New York; and in Toledo, Iowa.
All were cities where the Wietings had lived
and were active in civic affairs.
The Wieting was built during the spring
and summer of 1912, supervised by H. J.
Stiger. Described as the latest in opera house
construction, the new 50 x 100 foot house
would seat 650 and would feature stage,
orchestra pit, main floor, balcony, two
boxes, dressing rooms, toilets and rest
rooms.

he contract was let in March to C. W. Ennis with his brothers, Sherman, supervising and a number of sub-contractors: James Bridge, carpentry work; A. H. Conant,
roofing and plumbing; Roy Davis, electrical wiring; B. M.
Berger and Son, painting; Clarence Brainard, decorating.
Through the years, many groups and individuals have
made gifts to the care and upkeep of the Wieting. Mrs.
Wieting gave an additional $1,000 in April of 1923 for
repairs to the under structure.
In her will, Mrs. Wieting left $10,000 to be set up as a
trust fund with the interest to be used for the care and
upkeep of the building. Only $7,500 was received as her
estate could not cover all bequests she had made. Her will
provided that this bequest would revert to the estate if the
theatre should close for two consecutive years.
Original trustees of the Wieting Opera Company were
Ella W. Wieting, W. A. Dexter, P. K. Rebok, J. G. Wieting,
J. F. Yothers, and H. J. Stiger.
The Wieting was an instant success, attracting high
grade entertainment. It was the best house in Iowa for a
town of its size and located on a main line from Chicago to
Omaha. It was large enough to make a week’s stay profitable.
Considered a factor in the early success was its manager, J. G. Wieting, known as Guy. He was a nephew of P. G.
Wieting and had a knack for show business, associating the
theatre with the best booking companies in New York City.
He held the position for many years and until his death.
In addition to the road shows, the Wieting was the site of
minstrel shows, lyceum courses, high school plays, graduation exercises, political conventions, medicine shows,
even a Ku Klux Klan gathering.
By the mid 1920’s, road shows were declining and
movies were coming into full bloom. The Wieting had
apparently had a screen early on, for Art Ludwig was being
paid for “operating” as early as 1913 and his wife and others for piano playing. Silent movies were usually accompanied by piano music.
MOTION PICTURE ERA BEGINS
The financial report of 1931 shows the theatre leased to
F. C. Cook and A. S. Smith, for a “talking picture show.”
In 1932, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Sichra leased the building
and operated a movie theatre. Mr. Sichra died in 1948, and
Mrs. Sichra continued to manage the business. The competition of television caused a decline in movie attendance,
and the Wieting closed in November of 1958. The curtain
fell on the Wieting, but it was not the end, only the intermission.
In early spring, 1960, an amazing saga began. A group
of women, visiting over coffee and cookies following a
PTA meeting, deplored the lack of local movies and regretted the possible loss of the Wieting trust fund unless the
theatre reopened that fall.
Discussion widened and on April 7, 1960, 40 citizens

and others were attracted to the cause. In May, members
set foot in the Wieting for the first time. Although musty

three were among those instrumental in bring the theatre
back to life after it had closed

customers were identified in

and cobwebby, the old opera house seemed full of dreams and
possibilities.
An executive committee was chosen: Mrs. Willard Beadle,
chairman, Mrs. Virgil Wulff, Mrs. Charles W. Maplethorpe, Jr.,
Leo Benda and Dallas Sloan. They began the task of teaching
themselves the complicated business of running a movie theatre.
When Leo Benda resigned, Charles Patterson became a board
member.
Many volunteers labored through the summer cleaning and
painting. The line crew from Iowa Electric Light and Power trav-
eled to Montezuma several evenings, to remove the chairs from
the closed theatre there, truck them back to the theatre and install
them in the Wieting. A new ticket booth was also secured.
Women gathered at the community building to sew 100 yards
of corduroy into curtains to drape the empty stage. Hands were
blistered pounding grommets into the drape headings for hanging.
Bill Craig scaled the heights of the “fly gallery,” threaded new
nylon rope through pulleys and hoisted the new draperies into

The two Toledo couples had
attended the original opening
night for the Wieting in 1912. The

and featured a “Chicago cast.”

Women’s Club repaired the electrical floor plugs.
Following the advice of Dick
Sutton of Des Moines Theatre
Supply, the executive committee
decided to purchase the projection equipment from Mrs. Sichra.
A new screen was purchased.
With no funds to spend, the committee followed the suggestion of
Dallas Sloan and decided to sell
family season tickets. The committee purchased the first five
tickets, a sum of $100, and with
another 100 sold, had a cushion
of funds to begin operation.

of children and adults filled the house.
In the projection booth, were self-appointed projectionists, Dallas Sloan and Willard Beadle, starting a new career
under the watchful eye of Dick Sutton. Others volunteered
to help in the projection booth, including Robert Leber,
James Shaff, James Black and Dan Kendall. In the meantime
citizens volunteered to sell tickets and work in the concession stand.
And the show was on!
This was an active period of community involvement featuring Bill Riley’s Talent Show, Fall Follies, February
Fling, and Hillbilly Hoedown, and numerous high school
productions, as well as many variety shows by the Masque
Troupe of local talent. Community members continued to
give of their time, talents, and resources to tenderly care for
the Wieting Theatre.

“The Wieting Theatre is a most
remarkable landmark in Tama County
and an honest to goodness opera
house.”
Dr. Michael Patterson

"When I first entered the Wieting as I began
my teaching and directing career for South
Tama, the big productions were held at the theatre. Walking into the theatre for the first time
was as if I were walking into history. I am sure
that I looked around and thought about everything I learned in History of the Theatre II. I was
in awe of the hand-painted main drop, the rail
system, the acoustics, the oleos--the living and
breathing history in front of my eyes. As I have
gotten older, I have come to appreciate more
how rare this facility is and how lucky we are in
the Tama-Toledo area to have this place. This
theatre is a rare jewel that we must love and
honor."

Keeping the Dream Alive
RLou Snyder has been a Wieting Theatre Guild Member or
President for over 42 years. Her job description is “whatever needs
to be done” from cleaning to ordering supplies to presiding over
monthly meetings.
RLou is a local resident whose family settled in Tama County
before Iowa was a state. She remembers her first movie at the
Wieting Theatre featured Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. Her
first live performance was the third grade winter program. One
weekend she didn’t have the $.10 for admission to the movies so she
cut a bundle of rhubarb and tried to sell it door-to-door. She was
unsuccessful because everyone grew their own.
As you can imagine, her husband, Jim, has been very involved
over the years. As an electrician, he installed lights, plug-ins, painted the theatre twice, and drove to Des Moines to pick up and deliver the weekly movies. Together they raised four children: Jim
(Marshalltown), John (Ankeny), Joni (Council Bluffs), and Mary
(Toledo). During these years, RLou worked two jobs, bowled in
league, helped with the youth group in the Methodist Church, and
was active in the Tama County Historical Museum.
Through volunteering at the theatre, she developed many lifelong
friendships, acquired an awareness of how to work with people with
different personalities, learned how to accomplish goals, sang in the
Making the Dream Possible
One of the more difficult jobs of any major project is securing community support and fund-raising. Jim Roan’s optimistic
attitude helped him succeed in this vital area. He believes the
public welcomes the opportunity to get involved in a worthwhile project and just want to be asked.
chorus, mastered line dancing, and loved road trips to purchase fabric for productions.
Her favorite movie is Cat Ballou with Jane Fonda and Lee
Marvin. She saw it three days in a row!
RLou has an appreciation of history and old buildings. She
strongly believes if you allow buildings to die, your community dies
along with them. The Wieting Theatre Trustees, Guild Members,
and theatre patrons appreciate RLou’s loyalty, leadership, and dedication to the preservation of our cherished theatre.
Jim has been influenced by his family and associates His
mother, Margaret was a teacher who raised six children on a
farm during the Depression. She instilled in her children the
importance of service to others, higher education and the philosophy that things will work out.
His mentor, M. G. Mickelson, was a forward thinking, community minded individual who anonymously gave away money
at Christmas time to those in need. His wife, Jean, and children
are still supportive of local betterment projects. These two individuals, along with Jim’s wife, Mary, have given him the confidence to reach out to others.
Jim and Mary raised six children: John (West Des Moines),
Paul (Toledo), Pat (Swisher), Margaret (Tama), Ann (Toronto),
and Laura (Des Moines). Laura was the actress of the family
and spent time on the Wieting stage.
Jim graduated from Albia High School in 1950. He went on
to play basketball at Creighton University while earning a
degree in history He completed his law degree from the
University of Iowa in 1957, and spent one year at Iowa State
University working with agricultural law. On April 1, 1958, Jim
began private practice in Toledo.
South Tama County is a source of pride for Mr. Roan. He
believes this is a good place to raise a family, and the diversity
teaches us how to get along with people with different life experiences and perspectives. Through his law practice he was continually impressed with the support and charity given to others
during their time of need.
As someone who appreciates history, Jim cites Dr. Zhivago
as his favorite movie. He also admires To Kill a Mockingbird
with Gregory Peck as a lawyer who represented the underdog.
There are many truths to be learned in that movie according to
Jim.
The Wieting Theatre Trustees, Guild Members, and theatre
patrons appreciate Jim’s positive attitude, hard work and dedication toward the promotion of this project.

Making the Dream a Reality
Mark McFate is our Systems Administrator and technician extraordinaire. He not only maintains our website

organized and patrons informed of upcoming attractions,
but continues to perfect our state-of-the-art digital projection and sound system. One of Mark’s many gifts is his
sense of calm in teaching guild members how to successfully operate this system on movie nights.
Mark graduated from South Tama High School in 1978.
He earned a Civil Engineering Degree from Iowa State
University in 1982 and a Masters Degree from the
University of Kansas in 1995.
Mark is married to Christine and father of three: Morgan,
Mackenzie, and Ian. He met Chris backstage in 1980 during
the summer production of You Can’t Take it With You at
the Wieting. Mark (and later Christine) lived in the Kansas
City area from 1982-1999. Mark was an information technology engineer / manager at Black & Veatch (B&V) and
still works on the B&V account for HP (Hewlett-Packard)
Enterprise Services. Over the years as their family grew
they decided to return home to be near family and raise
their children in the small town that was so familiar to
them. Mark is still employed by HP as an IT Specialist
working from his home. He also keeps busy supporting his
family’s activities, is active on the South Tama School
Board, serves on the Rec Trail Committee, occasionally
helps coach Large Group Speech, and is a co-founder and
webmaster for the Iowa Geocachers Organization. Mark is
also the webmaster for the Chamber of Commerce, STC
School District, Methodist Church and other local groups
and businesses.
Mark’s favorite movie is Mouse Hunt, a 1997 American
slapstick comedy. He would like to see the Wieting Theatre
provide quality entertainment and serve as a gathering place
that welcomes young and old alike.
The Wieting Theatre Trustees, Guild Members, and theatre patrons appreciate Mark’s hard work and dedication to
the smooth operation of the Wieting Theatre.

Tribute to Volunteers
Some of the many volunteers who keep the Wieting operating are given a tour of the newly renovated theatre on Jan. 15,
2012, by Jim Roan, project manager (left).
The renovation of the historic Wieting Theatre would not have
been possible without the on-going support of individuals, local
businesses, and civic groups. There are many quiet individuals
who put in a good word, gave a suggestion, shared their family
member or helped in big and small ways not for recognition, but
for the success of this renovation. It is like a pebble thrown into a
pond We have no idea how many acts were done on behalf of this
project. For all of those, we are extremely thankful!
For the day to day operations, the cornerstone of the Wieting
Theatre is the 118 dedicated volunteers who donate their time and
efforts to help the Guild with theatre operations and maintenance.
Volunteers sell tickets, run the concession stand, work in the projection booth, maintain the landscaping, shovel the snow, clean
the theatre and assist with fund -raising events. The Guild members appreciate the hard work and dedication of these individuals
who just want to make a difference and leave a positive impact on
this community. Our goal is to provide entertainment opportunities at an affordable price in a friendly atmosphere.
If you are interested in becoming involved, please go to
www.wieting.tamatoledo.com to join us.
At work in the “old” concession stand were (l-r) Karla
Paustian, Mary Brower and Sharon Manfull. They are three of
the hundreds of volunteers who have devoted time to the
Wieting over the years.

Final Thoughts
A few years ago, a resident of Toledo wrote a letter to the editor. She
was commenting about the Wieting. She called it a “Jewel of the
Community”. What a wonderful description
After 100 years, our “Jewel” is still here. It stands as a tribute to
Philip and Ella Wieting. So much time, thought, and money have
been spent to bring our beloved theatre back to its glory days.
As we rededicate this fine structure, may it bring another 100 years
of joy, happiness, and entertainment to all the people of this community.
My closing for my articles years ago still seem appropriate today –
“See ya at the Wieting”!
